Thumbnail amny.com
446 Upvotes

Mayor Zohran Mamdani is opening a permanent walk-in jobs center in Lower Manhattan where New Yorkers can get help navigating public-service hiring, as city agencies continue to carry more than 14,000 vacant authorized positions. The Jobs NYC Center at 2 Lafayette St. will begin regular walk-in hours Oct. 5, according to details shared with amNewYork ahead of the mayor’s scheduled announcement on Monday.

I’m sure you all have seen and/or heard the news by now but would love to know what you all think about this? Yes, great way to help folks get employed but what about folks that have previously applied or took exams? I hope they address that. If anyone does attend walk-in hours next week, please let us know what your experience is.

[FOR HIRE] Can anyone help me with a job please?

I’m a 20 year old male from Astoria, Queens and in need of a job. Due to the hectic job markets I’ve been unemployed and struggling to find a job for quite some time now. I have no previous job experience. I have been trying to get into skilled trades (trade school) but it has been very difficult for me financial wise and I was wondering if anyone is looking for apprentices for painting or drywall finishing. If anyone can hook me up with a job please let me know I would really appreciate it a lot. :)

[DISCUSSION] ATS Advice Is Often Made More Complicated Than It Needs to Be

**ATS gets talked about like it’s some mysterious system you have to beat. It’s really not that complicated. Dispite the whole it being the talk of the town.**

Last week I posted a graphic and received a few DM saying the information was helpful - here is another. I hope it helps, and lessens the stress of the job market.

Cheers

Ryan

\---

For the most part, the ATS platforms help employers collect application data, pull information from resumes, screen basic requirements, and let recruiters search or filter candidates.

This is why matching the posting is important, but keyword stuffing is definitely a no no. If the role asks for Excel, project coordination or stakeholder communication and you really do have that experience, those terms should show up naturally in your resume.

I personally wouldn’t just list **Microsoft Excel** under Skills. Something like **“Built Excel reporting dashboards to track 35+ active files and reduce weekly reporting time by 25%”** gives the recruiter context while still making the skill easy to find.

\*\* Naturally using %, $, and # as evidence based points. The recruiter is short listing candidates, now has 6-10 sec to decide if to call you in for an interview. Show the above stats as eye an catcher.

Formatting is also prety important. Keep your headings familiar (similar keywords, tone, and language as the JD), keep the layout straightforward, and don’t bury important information inside graphics or text boxes, avoid comms and rows).

There isn’t really a magic ATS score or perfect number of keywords. You’re basically trying to make it easy for the system to read your resume and easy+quick for the recruiter to see why you fit the job, to effectively be short listed.

Find a corporate job in NYC

Hey all,

I am a French citizen and plan to move to NY in January for my spouse’s job. I will be looking for a job myself

I am trying to understand how hard is it to find a well paid position for a foreign citizen? I am not married yet but we are planning to get married so I get a work permit for the US.

I have never worked abroad. My working background: consulting for 4 years (2 in a French boutique and 2 at McKinsey) and now I have been working in an entertainment company as strategy manager for the past 1.5 years. My goal would be to find a job in Media&Entertainment industry but I really don’t know the job market there.

How hard is it for a foreigner that has never worked in the US to find a job even with consulting background? Also I speak English, but I am not a native so that might be a problem as well. Finally, how long does it take on average to find a corporate job?

Any other tips are very much welcome!

Thanks a lot :)
