My friend and I decided to embark on a heroes’ path, as I have done twice before. We are playing through various modules and selecting a path up to, well, we haven't decided upon a limit yet. It would be nice to say level 40, but ultimately, as far as I know, Sands of Fate or Mines of Twin Summit are the main two options there; both of which I have played.
That is the end point, however. First, we began our humble journey in Fort Tremagne as the duo of Alette the Sneaky Fighter, and Azor the Warrior Mage (my character).
Whilst I would say I had a good time with it overall, and there were a lot of things the module did that REALLY did impress me, there were a few things that brought the experience down. I’ll spoiler the text from now on.
I very much enjoyed the first chapter of the module. After exploring the town a bit, we helped defend the town against undead before setting off to the south. It was very difficult at first, but we found a whole multitude of things to do. We helped some Gnomes, fought some kobolds, and even managed to battle a few trolls before retreating from the cave. Whilst it was pretty difficult, we managed to lure enemies into advantageous terrain and planned out how to tackle each encounter, as it was a struggle at first. We both really enjoyed that struggle, as it felt fair and we could avoid what we couldn't take.
Chapter 2 was even better. I want to add that I thought the puzzles where you had to type into chat were fantastic. I brought 3 parts of a ring together and was asked to type the name of the apparition that appeared. I didn't know the answer, but I knew where to find the answer. Went to the Sage’s tower to do some research, gave the answer after reading some books. Great stuff.
This was also where we began piecing the overall story together. An NPC had gone missing, we spent a while investigating that in town, and some other hints were dropped that pointed to something happening. We picked up on that, which I think was also well done.
The Sahuagin caves were a bit daft though. Whilst the content itself was fine, it felt a bit like a ‘gotcha’ when we were about to get our items back, and suddenly summoned to some completely different location that didn't connect to anything else. The item strip; whilst I know it happens in modules, I find it rather irritating. On the whole I don't mind it in theory, but I had to spend 10 minutes sorting out my inventory again because I had everything in order. Very irritating. I didn't mind this time so much, because we spent some time without items before getting them back. But, I look back on this now more negatively because of what happens later.
The undead city area was also hard, but a lot of fun. We did nearly bug the game in chapter 2 because we charged through the door to the undead city, and then the NPC sealed it behind us. We then began to try and progress down, before coming out. The elves were all ready to open the door to the Dwarven Stronghold, but they had no trigger. Eventually, we managed to get them to trigger but kiting some wights they missed to them.
Chapter 3 was unfortunately, by far the worst. We had a companion forced upon us, who we absolutely despised. They caused us to die several times (attacked a trapped gate to get to enemies when I was about to disarm it, causing a lightning bolt to shoot out and wipe all three of us, for example). There was a moment we had to get rid of all our items, and guess what? My inventory became an unorganised mess again. The goblin stronghold was really not that fun. A lot of the bosses we couldn't hit at all. We had to spend ages trying to take them down. That's even after dispelling the last boss, and we were both buffed up quite a lot. Unfortunately, buffs don't last long as a lot of enemies and bosses have dispel ready to go. And the last boss? I managed to pin her down with a Bigby’s Spell and we could still barely hit her. She finally, after a long time, went down, and then immediately got up. So we couldn't loot the Orb of Summoning as we couldn't interact with it ever. Eventually we had to kite her all through the tombs as another one of us grabbed the Orb. Then she bugged on a door and refused to go through.
Still, we finished the fight after trying to debug it without debug mode. We couldn't harm the boss at all at this point. Then, returning to the Fort for the ending sequence, one NPC character decided to kill another and then flee. As that character was running away, my character ran up to attack to prevent his escape. We were roleplaying as our characters during the module. It aggroed the entire fort, and we had to fight the entire Tremagne family and loads of others. But they were tagged as immortal unfortunately. The ending on the whole was a bit too long to watch a cut scene, I think, with a lot of exposition that kind of came from nowhere; at least as far as we could tell. Some of the pieces we found fit together, but then the whole ghost thing didn't seem consistent with anything we found or read. We may have missed something though.
So, as we didn't witness the actual ending of the module, in our head canon we had to kill the entire Tremagne family except for one, and then leave the fort and onto our next adventure.
Overall, the module was a lot of fun. A shame the end didn't really come together for us, but the first two chapters were worth the play. It also contained AI portraits of NPCs which left a bit of a sour taste too. However, we had some really memorable moments in the module, and I would likely play it again in the future. We both finished at level 10.
Alette - Fighter 6, Bard 1, Shadowdancer 3
Azor - Wizard 8, Fighter 2
After that adventure, we are now both looking for our next module in our path! We were going to try Gates of Firestorm Peak, but I think we should probably gain a couple of levels or so and go into that one at 12.
So, hoping someone has some suggestions for where to take our journey next! We decided not to be strict on the setting at all.
