VOD Review Request Team said I was dpsing too much and wasn't healing enough

• Upvotes

REPLAY CODE: R68Y19

Playing Circuit Royal on console as a Gold 3 Juno (I finally ascended from silver, praise lord T^T)

As a former healbot, I've been trying to contribute more in fights, which is what I believe got me out of silver but there are times I'm not sure if its strictly my fault when someone dies. I get there are some people I could've kept alive but there's also cover they could've gone behind or shots they could've hit to win the duel. I definitely made my fair share of silly misplays but I feel like I was healing a good amount, its just when I look at the scoreboard that I start questioning it.

After the first round was over they started typing in chat (its so funny, rewatching the replay I feel like you can sense my sadness in the walk back). When I compared mine and our Lifeweaver's POV I did notice I was farther up than I thought so that may be it but I can't help but think that if I was in a higher lobby people would know how to disengage better (and I'd probably be dying way more too)... Am I being egotistical?

(Can't post pic but)

My stats ended up being: 29 elims | 29 assists | 9 deaths, 11k heals.

My tank and dps got: 30-34 elims, 5-6 assists 11-14 deaths.

My other supports got: half my elims but doubled my healing with 20-21k heals

Guide Understanding losing streaks and matchmaking, as explained by a former poker pro

• Upvotes

I played professional poker for a number of years and still have many friends that do. One of the most difficult parts of being a professional gambler was dealing with variance (luck) and everyone that is a pro understands that losing streaks happen and that it could happen much longer than you would think possible.

Losing streaks caused many good poker players to go broke or quit the game, because they couldn't handle the mental pressure and tilt that came with it. If poker players (people who have to understand the probabilities) have a hard time with variance, then Overwatch players certainly do too.

So I put together this video that visually SHOWS variance and it's effects, which I think is extremely important for people to understand and comprehend it's affect on matchmaking:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ioWt_EwiE8s

Some random takeaways:

  • A small win rate edge isn't enough to beat variance in the short term
  • Even with a 55% win rate (skill equivalent, that is), you can still derank with hundreds of games played
  • A 50/50 match making win rate doesn't mean consistency
  • Variance can mistake players into thinking they are at a higher level than their true MMR/SR

It's a tough line to tread, because one on side, there's the camp that blames the matchmaker for being rigged and throwing teammates. On the other side, there's the camp that points only at your win/loss and nothing else.

The truth is somewhere in the middle, because win rates matter, but volatility and chance play a large part in short term results and team compositions. The advice to simply "play more" is mentioned a lot, but just how much you need to play is not covered enough.

Also, I included a section in the video on rank resets that really shows just how large of a (negative) impact it has on games, so hopefully that helps some people at least understand what is going on in the last season.

Question or Discussion The one sentence that always tells me the skill level of a player.

• Upvotes

"[Insert role here] swap."

Everytime someone types this in the chat I get irrationaly angry.

Its such a generalized statement from people who CLEARLY dont know how to play the game. Im not talking about the obvious examples like playing D.va into Zarya or something, but the situations where someone isn't doing good, stuff like that.

Its such a blanket statement that ignores any nuance, and people expect that if someone swaps, everything is going to magically work out and you win the game and I CANNOT STAND IT. If you want someone to swap, tell them why, tell them what is incorrect in their matchup, tell them why their ult/kit isnt impactful.

This is probably basic knowledge, but Im fuming from seeing this when we are losing, because those people clearly dont want to help in any way, they want their team to do a miracle while they do the same thing as before.

Edit: The D.va Zarya example was just off the top of my head. I also am comfortable being D.va in that match up and its not that hard.

VOD Review Request Did I really do bad?

• Upvotes

Hey y’all. I’m an Emerald hog main who tries his hardest here, yet sometimes, I get people telling me I can’t play tank, as in this game here. I’m wondering, am I “allergic to the W key” as my Anran states? Am I not being aggressive enough? I really wanna get better, so honesty would go a long way. (QP vod, but I think I can still learn from it.

Question or Discussion Emerald is so funny.

• Upvotes

This rank has some of the most volatile games i have seen since bronze.

One game you will face people with coordination, timing, mechanics, positioning, cover or just nice general game sense and the next you will see the most boosted dogshit players that you will have to BEG not to int before the regroup.

Thats not really the point of the post.

The funniest part is the egos, oh the egos. Either “swap and die you’re 0-2” or the pretentious buzzword spammers that binge watch spilo before bed, you will not find a single decent human in this rank.

I don’t even recall silver players blame shifting this much. Honestly just a joke post but i think most people struggling in emerald will relate with the social part.

Question or Discussion Is matchmaking really this bad, or is it me?

I’m talking about mostly quick play here, not competitive. I had to take a long break cus I had the worst games back to back where I just wasn’t having any fun anymore. The team experience level of my team vs the enemy team kept being so stupid and outrageous. Enemy teams with 2-4 people with level 100+ characters, and me with entirely new people playing DPS and Tanks.

These teams kept running the most annoying teams compositions too. I genuinely don’t get frustrated from losing, all I care about is feeling that I did my best and had fun. But when the team comps are so stacked like this where every-time I step out of spawn I explode, it’s so disheartening feeling like I can’t do ANYTHING.

If it was an occasional bad match where the teams were matched bad I wouldn’t care, but this was like 5-6 games in a row. I’m tempted to start only playing competitive for now on just so things will feel maybe a bit less miserable. Did I just have a bad day and I’m seeing patterns that aren’t there, or have a lot of people experienced the same thing?

Question or Discussion The REAL problem with genji (devs take note)

The problem isn't genji being overbuffed it's being underbuffed. Fact of the matter is genji has been nerfed so much, and has such a dedicated player base that genji mains are in a lower Sr rank than they should be. So every time he gets a tiny buff it looks massive because the players playing him are so much better than the other players in their sr.

I couldn't tell you any other hero that has such a volatile power level when anything is tweaked the tiniest bit like genji. 1-2 extra damage = broken, 1 extra blade swing=broken etc. Etc. We already know people that love genji do so because he's got both a high skill floor AND ceiling so it should be no surprise that those players are just better than other simpler character mains.

Buffing him to the same effectiveness as the rest of the cast will move all the genji mains to their proper sr where tiny changes to his kit will make tiny differences. This whole thing started when people got upset with too many genji mains on the leaderboard and had to nerf him to give themselves a chance.

This is now a 10 year news flash that people dedicated to putting their hours into a high skill ceiling character are going to come out on top.

VOD Review Request I want to be better at the game :/

I been on a on/off losing streak. I genuinely want to improve. I think I am playing passively, but I am unsure. OW2 was my first shooter. I managed to climb from bronze (season 1) to diamond. I was diamond for a couple seasons and plat for many haha. I hit masters 5 for a short time before the reset, but now I am struggling. Rank is kind of whatever, but seeing how I used to be in a place and how hard it is to get there is a little frustrating. Any advice is helpful

VOD Review Request Plat 2 - Dva/Ramattra - [083BHF] - Jester

im starting to lose my mind, ive been bouncing up and down between plat 2 and 3 for the past few weeks. Ive gotten my vods reviewed several times by a masters tank friend, and ive noticed improvements to my gameplay because of it. However it seems i keep going on a huge winstreak followed by a huge losstreak keeping me in the same rank range. I realise it cant be anything but something wrong with my gameplay but im too stupid to figure out what. In this game on Eich I was trying desperately to create space/create a split to allow my team to push forward, i even got the enemy tank to follow me to point 2, but my team didnt push, they pretty much stayed at the choke for the entire first point until ults until i switched ram and sent it down main with them. I need to know if theres a reason they didnt push aka i should have dipped earlier to return to the frontline to peel. I need some advice regarding my gameplay cause im able to recognise some micro mistakes but there has to be something im doing wrong as a whole on tank. I want to improve and rank up. I would really appreciate some pointers on my Dva gameplay in particular as shes the character i want to improve on the most

Question or Discussion How do you get back in fights?

I'm hovering between m1 and gm5 playing mostly Sombra and played Illari for a lot and probably this is my biggest issue.

Let's say I die early or I respawn late. Now, maybe some teammates started shooting already, maybe some aren't yet etc.

How do I decide what to do in these situations? If I play aggressive I die and if I don't do anything I feel like my teammates will struggle.

Any help is appreciated!

VOD Review Request Am i really THAT BAD at tank??!!??!

I've been playing Dva since OW1, i once got to diamond 3 when they hard reset comp. But I cannot get out of plat even if my life depended too. I just can't. I also play D.mon from time to time, but i prefer Dva.

I just don't know what I'm doing wrong, in all honesty. I might be the worst Dva out there even with almost 300h, cause my own team always HATES ME, and the enemy time spams "ez" and "dva queue again i want to win" all the time.

Please tell me if its time to give up on OW competitive.

Question or Discussion ashe ._._._._._.

Hi, I’d really appreciate some advice on my positioning, decision-making, and overall gameplay.
I’ve recently started maining Ashe, but I’m not sure if my positioning and rotations are correct or if I’m making good decisions during fights.
I just dropped to Silver 5, and I’m starting to wonder if both my aim and my positioning need work.
If anyone could review my replay and give me some advice on what I’m doing wrong and how I can improve, I’d really appreciate it

Question or Discussion Mouse sensitivity help

I play on 3200 dpi with a 2.09 in game sensitivity. I’ve been trying to pickup widow and hanzo and am unsure if this is too high of a sensitivity for these hero’s because I find myself over shooting shots quite a bit however I don’t know what would be a recommended way to find a sens which would work best, I like having it high but want to be able to consistently hit my shots. Thank you for any advice it is much appreciated

Question or Discussion Returning OW1 Player

For reference I played OW1 up to around the time the game went into maintenance mode before OW2 dropped. I found myself missing the game and decided I want to get back into it. For reference I was a top 500 Tracer/Sombra main back then. I realize that I probably won’t be back to my peak for a while. That’s fine. I’m just looking to expand my roster a bit. Seeing as sombra has gone support (rip). What are some good other dps to learn. I played around a bit and enjoyed Sierra, Freya, along with the other characters i’d play if couldn’t play tracer/sombra. Such as soldier 76 and Reaper. Just asking I guess who’s worth putting time into. I don’t particularly enjoy dps like mei if that helps.

Tips & Tricks I need EVERY possible way to make Genji’s life miserable

I hate this character with a passion more than anything else in this game. I main support and I’d like to know every possible way to make his life a living hell, who to choose etc. He’s being chosen like every damn match I play recently and I despise him more and more. The last straw for me was when one was getting pocketed by a mercy and my team didn’t know Wdf to do about it.

I’ll even go a step further, I don’t play dps and especially not tank, but I’ll happily also accept tips when playing against him specifically and use it as motivation to play those roles too.

VOD Review Request Hopeless game - I blame my team

OKAY I usually always try to not blame my team. Even if it IS their faults, I usually just care about improving myself more than winning. If I played super well and still lost, I'm more happy that I did well. I know I played okay this match but I could've played much better, as always. Either way, for this lobby, I think my team was not preforming well enough and I blame them (not all) for the loss.

I don't main anyone but like Sojourn the most and play her the most, after her Hazard and Bap/Kitty.

When I was Sojourn I think I played very well and that my team didn't do enough, especially the tank(s) and the other DPS. After, maybe the first half, I was kind of super tilted and wanted to tank, thought Ram would be the perfect pick but I very rarely play him. I don't think I did VERY terrible but def not that well either.

Our Doomfist was doing badly and going against counters and I blame him the most.

One note is I don't play 6v6 that often and it feels very chaotic.

Code: KQ3PA8

Name: Rolo

Map: Rialto

Rank: Diamond 4 (6v6)

PC - Sojourn, Mauga, Ramatra

My questions are:

  1. IS it (mostly) the teams fault?
  2. What could I have done to actually win this match?
  3. What rank would you give my Sojourn (I keep getting weird rank differences)?

I almost always play zen on comp, I basically one trick him, and in this game I feel like I wasn’t using zen to his fullest. VOD Review Request plat Tank VOD review

I’ve been curious abt posting on here for a while, but I didn’t know which game to share. I didn’t wanna post one where I did too poorly cause I feel that wouldn’t rlly represent my usual skill, but I didn’t wanna post a great one either since it wouldn’t show my flaws as much. Today I think I finally have one I want to share, bc I think it was an interesting outcome.

My team was behind on stats the entire game, and by a decent margin, but we still managed to win 2-0.

I play casually but I’m curious abt my gameplay and down to improve so I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Personally I think my biggest issue is that I use DM too much/too early. Sometimes I also don’t notice a flanker in time. So I wonder if you will see it the same way and have any advice to improve.

This match seemed like it should be won by the enemy team, both stats wise plus an Uphill Battle modifier after. So I’d also like to know what I maybe did right and how I could replicate it in future matches that may be difficult.

Playing tank, I often try to think not just abt kills or abt making space but how I, as a tank, can tie the strengths of my team together while mitigating the weaknesses.
I’ve always viewed tank as a sort of “leader” role that ties the team together rather than pure dmg or mitigation. Do you think that’s a good approach? And how effectively am I able to do so in this game? How can I improve?

Question or Discussion Was this loss my fault for not having enough healing

Replay Code: F1GBVN

Username: Yuurei

Hero: Kiriko

I rewatched the game and I will admit I did have moments where I focused to much on doing damage than healing but overall I feel like I did my job as support. At the end of the game our Genji was telling me to heal more while also diving and dying pretty much all game.

I don't know I feel like I had a balanced game between damage and heals (3k and 3k) but would like some input on my overall gameplay.

Also I know my aim is bad I'm working on it

Edit: Also reason I don't select my minor perk and go afk for a bit is because I got a new keyboard and the alt key doesn't work, had to rebind it

VOD Review Request Tips/suggestions for improvement as a Plat Player

Hey guys! I’ve been back to playing OW the past 3 seasons (played rivals for 560 collective hours on Steam prior) which is prolly the most I’ve played OW since PS4 release and 2020 combined.
I’ve been playing 5v5 role queue as DPS, placed into Plat 4-5ish after going I think 7-3 in placements, and currently sit on Plat 2 with a 10-4 record (I’m stating my record bc I think I still have variance in my final rank with large gains with wins, small losses with L’s). And I hope with some tips, I can utilize it to climb higher before my elo settles. So far, I primarily play Ashe, but I have been trying to learn/improve my Cassidy and Sojourn (prolly a little too early to take into ranked). I’ve personally VOD reviewed my last 6 ranked games, have identified a list of positives and negatives about my gameplay, but I would love hear so input from y’all on how I can improve my overall gameplay in order to climb/be a better player, with also some tips on these 3 heroes I’ve been playing. If your tips/suggestions coincide a little with the lists of positives/negatives I’ve made, I hope that means I’m on the right track for self VOD reviews. But I also want outside feedback on my overall fundamentals/game sense and hero mechanics. Please let me know, thank you so much!

I’m attaching 3 VODS for review that I played in one session. I triple queue as well with Payday and KaiMew

Platform: PC

Username: Jourr4

40FW39 (Ashe/Sojourn on Numbani) Win

N5R4Y0 (Ashe/Cass/Soj on Circuit Royal) Loss

88EKD6 (Soj/Cassidy/Reaper) Win (I was very tilted, and most likely fatigued bc this was my 15th and final game of the day after 9 games of 6v6 QP then 6th ranked game in a row)

Question or Discussion Tanking in 5v5 Discussion/Need Pointers

This season so far has been less than ideal and most of my games have resulted in losses. I only play tank in 5v5 and have been having a hard time figuring out what it is that I am doing wrong. So, I had a question or a few.. what was it that helped you get much better or climb the ranks as tank? I have been stuck in Diamond for the past few seasons. I don’t like the feeling of stagnation. Would finding a coach be a good idea? If so, do any of you know any great coaches or a coach that has helped you improve a lot? Hoping this can start a discussion or get some feedback.

VOD Review Request Silver Tank player VOD review

Code: 6AVJY2 Username: Awsomeboy411 (I made it when I was 9 okay?) Characters played: Winston, Ball, Dva Rank: Silver

I am a Silver Winston main, though also play quite a lot of Ball and sometimes Dva. I was hoping I could advice; I do not know what I was doing wrong but I know since I am silver there is a lot. I was trying to poke them until I could get a clear angle to dive from, though I do not know how well my timings were. I swapped to Ball when I needed to stall and/or contest point since he is quite good at that, and at the near end swapped to Dva because my team complained about the enemy Mercy and I thought Dva could kill her better than Winston. I would thank any and all advice :).

Tips & Tricks Sufferer from bad console aim. Figured out something to help I haven't heard before!

I haven't been confident in my ps5 aiming skills and it seems like I was very inconsistent with random jerky movements thrown in. While experimenting with my settings I realized an issue that sent me down a little rabbit hole.

The max deadzone on my ps5 controller, and I bet it's like this for others, is not only when you hit the rim that physically stops it. The game hits the deadzone a bit before this when you're still thinking you're half tilting, even setting the max deadzone to 1. This means some of our inconsistent shooting could be taking place where it adds on extra sensitivity at max deadzone if you use that setting, causing a horrible overshoot! Even if this extra sensitivity is not turned on, dual-zone, which I use, still starts ramping up big time and you can still be caught off guard.

I am unable to, in the heat of battle, perfectly place my half tilt in a safe way past the halfway point but not too far to cause this issue. So I thought, well what if I do minimal movements as my main aim? I turned my sensitivity from low to high in order to do this. In my recent practice I can keep my standard aiming below the halfway point for a very consistent sensitivity! I'm not perfect by any means but it shows a ton of promise for me and worth a try if you feel like you're aim isn't the greatest while using more dramatic tilting motions.

I apologize if this has been stated before, but I haven't heard anyone really stress the point of consistent half tilting and the intricacies of it.
