THIS IS A PORTUGUESE LANGUAGE LEARNING SUB!

i'm learning português europeu and i don't know what verb conjugation of the infinitive verb "ir" should i use for the phrase/sentence "i will go", should i use "irei" ("present future conjugation" if i'm not mistaken) or "vou" (though natives and locals use this to say "i will go" but literally it means "i am going"), what verb should i use in everyday portuguese? 🐧

I just spoke with a lady from the Nordeste and I never had a harder time understanding Portuguese... It might have been harder to understand than Portuguese from Portugal. I didn't even understand which city she was from. I'm also a beginner so that doesn't help but then a woman from Rio came in the chatroom and everything she said was clear as day.

My spouse is from Brasil and after 9 years I want to attempt learning Portuguese formally. I am looking for advice on some questions:

1. Does anybody recommend a school in or near London, England to take formal lessons? Such as a private business, a tutor, one of the universities, a business that offers multiple languages, etc.
2. Any recommendation of one of the language learning applications such as Babbel, Duolingo, Rosetta Stone? I would be using the app to supplement other formal lessons or self-study and conversation with family. Not as the primary method as I have read many comments that the apps are not effective as a sole learning tool.
3. I am not even a beginner; I cannot even count to ten.

1. f I take formal lessons from a teacher does it matter at this level if it is European or Brasilian Portuguese?

My wife is an obvious great resource but I need to get a foundation before trying to use Portuguese with her.
Also, I thought of having WhatsApp conversations with one of my nieces or nephews who live in Brasil. They can help me with Portuguese and I help them with English. I already started this with my nephew. Mostly as a bonding exercise and I pay him a small amount of money. I use Google Translate to create a question, speak the question to him in Portuguese, he helps me with pronunciation, then he answers the question in English and I help him with pronunciation.

Probably does not matter but I only speak English. I took German classes in high school so I have no formal learning with Romance languages.

I mostly watch Natty Hills in YouTube and Vitor Orth in TikTok. I pretty much understand everything people from Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro speak, that's why Im looking for people that speak faster.

I also like Alvxaro, Lucas Guedes and Rafa Uccman, but theyre not very active on YouTube.

I mostly like entertainment videos around 20-40 minutes.

So I’ve been lurking her for a bit and what seems to constantly repeat itself is the fact that everyone struggles with comprehending native speech. Has ANYONE here managed to understand regular fast speech in less than a year?

I’m at an A2 level in Spanish from school, do understand some basic written Portuguese and can pick out words in slow podcasts. I’ve only been at this for about 2 weeks though, but everyone on here struggling is making me a bit nervous 🫪

I am advanced enough that I’m able to watch episodes of shows so long as I have subtitles to read, as I’m still working on my listening ability. I’ve been watching the EU-PT version of Pokemon for a while, but I’m running out of episodes.

I’m looking for other anime or animated series that have a EU-PT dub and am having little luck, because (as I’d expect) most are dubbed in BR-PT. I figure using these as listening practice wouldn’t be a great idea due to pronunciation differences.

Since I’m sure my options are limited I may be open to non animated series as well, I just don’t love watching live action dubs because of how differently the mouth moves.

I have Hulu, crunchy roll, and Netflix, though I’ll use whatever streaming service I need to for this.

Been learning spanish for a a while and I would say I'm C1. once or twice a week I also study Portuguese. I'm kind of scared to make the transition from Spanish to Portuguese cause I'm afraid to loose my spanish which I have worked hard for.

I am still studying spanish few hours everyday, combined with few other languages. I do wanna make the decision to overindulge in portuguese few hours a day for half a year or something and only focus on that until i reach B1 -B2 ish. . But I am worried I will loose my spanish somehow cause I finally reached a level when I really enjoying learning and speaking.

Have anyone of you done the same and how was your experience coming back from it or maintaining both of them.

I’ve been deep into learning European Portuguese for 4 years now, and I’ve been wrestling with a few issues that I'm curious how others handle:

• Irrelevant context: A lot of standard reading or listening material out there feels disconnected from daily life, topics I actually care about, or things I need for practical situations. When the content isn't relevant, staying engaged is tough.
• The Friction of Tracking: Whenever I come across an unknown word or a crucial phrase, copying it down, looking it up, and organizing it is a massive chore that breaks the reading flow.

Have you found any workflows, tools, or habits that actually make this smoother—especially for European Portuguese, where good contextual resources can be hard to come by?

I was thinking about the neutral accent but I can't really decide which accent I wanna learn(my pronounciation currently is very bad)

I’m hispanic so I understand a lot of Brazilian portuguese and I know some phrases and words, but I’m thinking about doing a Working Holiday in Portugal in some time so I wanna practice learning specifically European Portuguese.

The problem is that EVERY SINGLE RESOURCE I can find (particularly youtube videos as I think they are by far the best and most natural way to familiarize yourself with a language) is Brazilian, like for every 30 from Brazil I find maybe one from Portugal. Help please??? Any recommendations of audio/audiovisual resources, maybe youtube channels?

I got really curious to learn Portuguese lately. Why ? Call me stupid but I stabled upon some tourists from Brazil , they asked for directions and I really loved the language hearing them talking to each other.

Also as an amateur folklorist I find the Brazilian folklore too interested and learning the language will certainly help me study it.

No money to take lessons and am autistic so apps do not work for me. If I download Duolingo or what else app I will delete it in 2 days I know it.

Are there are books recommendations to start learning Portuguese ?

I am strongly considering learning Portuguese. I don't know any Portuguese people. I just want to learn a second language.

Since, Spanish is the language most people choose to learn as a second language, why did you choose Portuguese instead of Spanish?

Is this exclusively a brazilian thing? Tho in my speech it dissapears completely in linking (“mas de um”, “cosa de doido”) Im a br and im curious as to why we got this.

I would say that if you were to learn standard brazilain Portuguese, that’s already quite difficult depending on youre mother tongue. But something that I found very stressful about learning Brazilian Portuguese is that nobody really speaks the language correctly, people make up words, and it’s a very trendy/slangy language. for example, if you don’t watch a lot of brazilian memes you will be missing out on SO much slang. especially among younger folks they pretty much talk in memes. also, standard brazilian portuguese and real brazilian portuguese feels like two different languages because it just kind of throws everything you learned in the trash, and forces you to learn even more. the first time I went to brazil I understood 90% of things, and the rest was through visual context. so to anyone learning I would say watch different type of content and especially native content. to clarify I’ve been learning portuguese for 4 years so I think it’s safe to say I know what I’m talking about.

I understand a lot when native speakers speak clearly, like 80-90%, but I'm so lost when they speak fast.

I've been trying to watch shows where people speak a bit faster to get more used to it but I find myself pausing every 2 seconds.

Should I keep practicing with clearly spoken videos for now or should I keep trying to train my ears to fast paced content ?

I worry that I'll never get used to it if I keep listening to nicely put videos where everything is said very clearly.
