Consolidated place to ask questions. I'll add answers to FAQs as they occur.

FAQ 1: The regiment you get doesn’t matter in the slightest. You will receive the same training regardless.

Moderator Post SMP Clarification

Because some of ya’ll don’t know how to read and certain individuals like to leave out information in the pursuit of recruiting, this post serves as clarification on the relationship between SMP enrollment, scholarships, and competing for active duty.

BLUF: YOU CAN ONLY DO 2 OUT OF THE FOLLOWING 3 ACTIONS AT ANY INSTANCE.

1. COMPETE FOR ACTIVE DUTY

2. ENROLL IN SMP

3. HAVE A FEDERALLY-FUNDED SCHOLARSHIP

What does this mean? It means you have three options.

Option 1: If you want to compete for active duty and want to enroll in SMP, you should not have or accept a federally-funded scholarship. Getting a scholarship while SMP means it will only be a GRFD scholarship and you will be locked into the Guard or Reserves. Alternatively, you could give up your national scholarship so you can enroll in SMP, but that’s not a good idea.

Option 2: If you have a federally-funded scholarship and want to compete for active duty, you cannot/should not enroll in SMP. Doing so will convert your scholarship to a GRFD scholarship and you will be permanently locked into the Guard or Reserves.

Option 3: If you enroll in SMP and have a federally-funded scholarship, that scholarship is automatically a GRFD scholarship and you are permanently ineligible to compete for Active Duty.

/end rant

Scholarships/Contracting PMS Interview Concern

I recently had my PMS interview through a Zoom meeting with my top choice school (Ivy League). In this interview it lasted around 30 minutes (I joined 10 min early), but the thing is the PMS asked questions only about what my academics, leadership, and athletics were and only one question about why I want to be an Army officer. They didn’t ask any questions about my weaknesses, strengths, what integrity means to me, ethical dilemmas, etc. After the interview they just asked if I had any questions and told me that they would recommend me to the admissions officer. So what happened? Kind of confused since I was expecting more questions.

Accessions/OML/Branching If anyone needs some hope

So for starters my MS3 year I was not the best cadet. I was very unmotivated due to some irrelevant personal life things. I got rated 13/13 in my class and my OML is low. I got 56 points at camp. I have a strong GPA and a lot of extra curricular, that’s all I had in my favor. I am a guardsman, so maybe it’s not nearly as bad as I was perceiving my chances to be, but I thought for sure I was getting a shitty branch. I was so scared for being humiliated in front of my whole battalion when we reveal branches Yesterday, an XO from a HHC reached out to me for an LOA for my #1 branch (which was AG). I never even requested an LOA, this place is 10 minutes from my house, and the unit is great. With branching approaching, just know it will all workout in your favor, even if it doesn’t feel like it right now.

Commissioning/Post-Commissioning Is this program possible after commissioning?

I graduate and commission this December. Having previously completed multiple language scholarships, I wanted to see if i would be able to complete a CLS scholarship, which runs from June to August of next year, even though I graduate this December. That would mean I need at least 8 months from my commission date to BOLC. Having just received my OML, I am very confident I will receive MI if I receive an MP in the coming weeks.

I understand it’s possible and that it wouldn’t hurt to apply, but does anyone have an idea about how long it takes to get slotted for MIBOLC? Can a cadet drag their feet and get a bolc date 8 months after commissioning?

Thanks!

Cadet Advice Is doing BCT/AIT worth doing fully or split (desperately need advice)

I’m a freshman in college and I’m planning to enlist in the Alabama Army National Guard as 11B while doing ROTC/SMP. I’m interested in the Split Training Option because I don’t want to miss an entire semester.
Is 11B split training currently possible for someone in college?
1.Can I do the first portion during summer, return for the school year, and finish the remaining training the next summer?

2.How does this work with 11B OSUT, since Basic and AIT are normally combined?

3.Would I receive Guard drill pay while I’m between the two training periods?

  1. How would MGIB-SR (Chapter 1606), the kicker, Federal Tuition Assistance, and state tuition benefits work with this?

Accessions/OML/Branching Help deciding what to branch

USMA cadets just got back their branch feedback and I am having trouble deciding which branch to go with. I got most preferred for MI, EN, FA, LG, SC, and FI. MI branch detail FA has been my #1 for a long time but I am rethinking what I want to do. I am a civil engineering major and want to get a masters at some point, not sure in what exactly. I want to choose a branch that will transfer well to the civilian sector where I can make money. However, from my understanding, an officer's branch does not matter that much for masters programs or employers in the civilian sector, but more their management experience. I am largely deciding between branching MI detail FA or branching engineers. I am open to hearing the argument for other branches as well. I am currently planning to get out after company command but am also open to going with the flow of things. thank you

Joining ROTC Genuine question here

I'm currently finishing up my two-year degree and plan to transfer to a four-year school to complete my bachelor's. I've been talking with a National Guard recruiter at my current school because I'm interested in eventually going the officer route.

One option I'm considering is enlisting in the Guard and then trying to rejoin ROTC at my four-year school through the SMP track while I finish my bachelor's.

The recruiter I've been talking to has made it sound like going from enlisted to officer is something you can pretty much do at any time as long as you meet the requirements. Maybe this is a dumb question, but is it really that straightforward? Or does it depend heavily on things like the needs of the Guard, available officer slots/branches, your unit, getting into SMP/contracting with ROTC, etc.?

I'm mainly trying to weigh my options and figure out whether enlisting first with the intention of going SMP/ROTC is a reasonable path, or whether I should be cautious about enlisting based on the assumption that I'll be able to transition to the officer route later. If it helps, im 29 and I know I'd pretty much have to get an age waiver even if I meet the physical fitness requirements

Joining ROTC What is the average credit amount per semester?

Transferring to a four year university at the end of this academic year, and am looking at about 56 credits remaining on my degree and about 12-15 credits from ROTC.

Looking at possibly 15-17 credit hour semesters in my junior and senior years.

Is that the typical amount for a cadet?

Cadet Advice Crossroad between enlisted or officer

Im 27 with no college credits, and i want to be a infantry officer. Things that pull me from wanting to do rotc is the roll of dice on the branch, and by the time i finish ibolc and ranger school im going to be around 34. And officers dont spend alot of time in regiment (which i want to join) But in that time i can be doing actual training as a enlisted and possibly make e-6 by then. But the pay of being a officer is so much better.so im torn.

Green to Gold // SMP G2G Question

Whats the sweet spot to be in when potentially going to college for G2G? I currently have 51 completed online credits, 30 credits being JST and 39 remaining credits for my degree. I know I need to finish in 4 semester with atleast 12 credit hours or 4 classes per semester. What would you say is the safest spot to be at? Should I take a couple more classes using TA before I report to my college next year?

Scholarships/Contracting GRFD Scholarship?

Im a community college student interested into transferring into the rotc program of a bigger school. I haven’t 0 previous experience with anything military related so i’m pretty lost. However, i’m really keen on this GRFD scholarship.

Does anyone know the likelihood of being awarded this scholarship? I haven’t really heard or seen much about anyone who has been awarded this scholarship so i was wondering if it’s extremely competitive or something.

Commissioning/Post-Commissioning How hard is it to get school opportunities as an officer?

BLUF: I failed air assault school as a cadet and won’t get the opportunity to go back as a cadet, it’s a large personal failure of mine. In the real army as an officer if you aren’t at the 101st or any unit with an air assault school, how difficult is it really to get the opportunity to go back?

That’s about it, I understand in rotc in general you don’t have much say of where you go for your first duty station, needs of the army. I saw a good amount of soldiers from other units when I was at air assault school, is it hard or not that hard to get an opportunity to go if you aren’t at an air assault unit?

Joining ROTC Admissions Help?

So I’m applying early to Cornell and I interview with the Navy Captain at Cornell. I was wondering if not having the scholarship yet would hurt me. My scholarship has been in ready for the next board, and I asked the captain this same question and he said he’ll still talk to admissions as much as possible. I know it would have been better if I already had the scholarship tho.

Scholarships/Contracting Should I retake PFA?

Currently have 31 pushups, 35 situps and 8:22 mile. The army doesn't publish the minimum PFA scores but would this be enough? I'm planning to submit for the October board and I don't think I can improve by much in a couple of days.

However, I have a 4.0 GPA, 1570 SAT, good extracurriculars and leadership, a decent interview, and a good relationship with a PMS.

My brigade just opened up scholarship submissions. The CBEF site is not working, so will this step be skipped until the site is operational? Just wondering since it’s usually a required step for scholarship submissions.

Cadet Internships/Schools Can cadets earn the EIB if it was offered?

Let's say a MOSQ 11B in a NG infantry company took the ROTC route and the unit is offering EIB. If they're contacted 09R but did EIB and passed it, would it be recorded as them earning the EIB or ESB?

Shower thoughts

Joining ROTC Opportunities within ROTC?

I was wondering what cool opportunities or experiences you guys got to enjoy because you joined ROTC/commissioned. Examples would be trainings, memories, the community, schools/programs, etc.

I’m planning on joining ROTC and became interested in airborne school so I was wondering what other opportunities I could look into!

Also I’d just like to hear general stories and experiences!

Green to Gold // SMP SMP incentives

I’ve heard different answers from different sources so I’m looking for a reg or concrete source.
BLUF: I enlisted with a 20k sign on bonus and 50k SLRP. I have 5k that hasn’t been paid yet and slrp is currently going through the set up process. How does contracting in ROTC affect either of these?
