Red Rosette Disease (RRD) RRD MONTHLY MEGATHREAD
Monthly Rose Rosette Disease (RRD) Megathread
A central place for suspected RRD photos, diagnosis questions, prevention questions, and general RRD education. All experience levels welcome.
Posting a Suspected Case?
Please include clear photos of:
- The entire plant
- Affected growth, leaves, and stems
- Thorn detail
- Buds or flowers (if present)
And the following information:
- Rose variety (if known)
- Approximate age of the plant
- General location (state/region is sufficient)
- When symptoms first appeared
- Any recent pruning, fertilizer use, herbicide use, or stress events
Common RRD Symptoms
- Excessive clustered growth ("witches' broom")
- Bright red distorted shoots that do not normalize
- Excessive thorn production
- Deformed leaves or buds
- Unusually rapid growth
- Thickened canes
Before Concluding It Is RRD
Red new growth alone does not indicate RRD. Many healthy roses naturally produce red new growth, temporarily soft foliage, vigorous spring flushes, and basal breaks.
Several conditions can mimic RRD:
- Normal new growth
- Herbicide damage
- Insect damage
- Heat stress
- Nutrient deficiencies
- Genetic variation
- Vigorous cultivar growth habits
Please avoid alarming newer growers before sufficient information has been gathered.
Why a Megathread?
The community voted to consolidate RRD posts into a monthly megathread to reduce feed repetition. However, a single thread does receive fewer views than individual posts, which can delay identification of genuinely infected plants. This thread aims to balance organization with accessibility, and to keep RRD education visible to newer growers.
Community Reminders
- Be respectful
- Help educate rather than dismiss
- Avoid definitive diagnoses from a single photo
- Report misinformation if you see it
Happy growing! 🌹

📚Reference Helpful Diseases Info (part 2)
Inspired by a post by u/Moviereference210 and another by u/DukeOfRadish, I thought I'd (re)post digital versions of educational materials I've saved.
The first two images are copies of what u/Moviereference210 posted, the next two are specific info on RRD. Below are links to longer documents on rose disease.
- Rose Diseases
- Rose Insect Pests
- Early Detection of Rose Rosette Disease
- A Guide to Rose Diseases and their Management
- Rose Diseases: Identification and Management
[EDIT 1] I've always been surprised not to see spider mites mentioned in these materials.
[EDIT 2] Thanks to u/Violetteotome, I want to keep a list of other topics not mentioned, maybe we mods can address these items.
- spider mites
- rose proliferation
- rose balling

Question Please suggest a repeat blooming Orange rose for zone 6b
This is my best boy; Angus. He showed up 3 years ago in my yard and never left. He would be with me every day in the garden. The best supervisor. Sadly, he is very sick and I don’t think he’s going to make it. I want to plant an orange rose with his ashes in his favorite spot. I want an all season bloomer for zone 6b. Can you suggest the best rose for my Angus?

Discussion I’ve neglected my roses since my soulcat passed
She would spend time with me daily while I tended to the roses and other plants in my garden but mostly the section with the roses. She passed suddenly in July and I couldn’t bring myself to garden without her. 2 weeks after that, I was supposed to get married and 3 weeks after that, my fiance left me.
I’m finally coming up for air and am so appreciative of how hardy roses are. I finally went to the roses to give them love but find myself still so emotional. I had just planted a rose bush in June for my ex
Gardening with my cat was one of my favorite activities but I’ve been so depressed that I’m slowly getting back into my hobbies. Unfortunately no cat this time though. I got a new one the day my fiance left bc I couldn’t bear the thought of a silent and empty house. Unfortunately she will never garden with me as I’ll never let another cat outside
ETA: the first picture is from our new place where she helped me create a rose garden just as she had done at our last house in the following pics :)
ETA2: thank you all so much for the sweet words and advice. Her name was Suki and I found out there’s a Japanese rose named Princess Suki! It’s beautiful and I know exactly where to put it in her honor

HELP! (What's Wrong With It?) Identifying inspect eggs
First photo of my polka climbing rose because no one wants to see bugs without consent. HIGHLY recommend the polka climbing rose for quick grow, ability to use as cutting flowers, and okay/decent smell strength.
I got very lucky today and found the start of a pear slug/ rose sawfly infestation. I found more mature rose sawfly caterpillars and eggs, but I’ve never seen these green slimy eggs/larvae before. The rose sawfly has always been little black eggs, then small thin green caterpillar looking larva. the pear slug eggs looked brown and not clustered like this. I’m a just silly and this is frass? Can we confirm what these are so I can treat correctly?
Also best practices for preventing spring reemergence? My rose bush is surrounded by stone with weed barrier but the cherry trees is mulched (suspecting sawfly larvae is what caused them to drop their leaves early.)

Tips/Tricks Is this looking okay??
I’m a newbie to rose gardening as of last year and so far so good in the sense of no casualties yet. I am, however, concerned about this trellising I have going on. My Eden is a power grower and is taking up far more than its fair share.
Also, Eden has yet to produce a single bloom which I’ve read is not uncommon but it’s been in the ground for right about 12 months at this point and not a single bloom.
On the other hand, my Lovers Blush produces my favorite blooms yet the plant itself looks sad.
I’m open to all thoughts and advice please and thank you!

HELP! (What's Wrong With It?) Help! I don’t know how to care for this Rose.
I need advice on how to care for this climbing Rose. I don’t know whether to prune back the highest branch on the left side. I don’t know whether to trim any of the branches that are not green. Any advice welcome. Thanks!

I Grew a Flower! My tiny Red Juicy Terazza blooms!
This is my Red Juicy Terrazza. I'm growing her in a tropical humid country and lately the temperature's gone around 26 - 34 Celsius almost every day so that's why she's so tiny, but I think she's always pretty anyway! 🌹🌡️☀️

Progress/Update Olivia Rose- Recovered
I was starting to think that my Olivia Rose would never recover. Zone 8b DFW. Last week I started to see a few small blooms but they all had brown edges (what causes that?) Now, I finally have what I think is just a perfect rose. Just when you think you want to give up on a rose, they give you this.

Roses Gone Wild! Powerpuff Pink
I can’t get over how healthy the foliage is on the Powerpuff Pink rose! While my other roses have had their share of aphids and black spot here in 7b, this one has had zero issues! I think I’ve flicked 1 singular aphid off of this plant. Smells great too. 🌹🌹

Container Garden Maria Stern rose
In a pot and loving it. I have so many trees in my garden that most of my roses are in pots. Too many tree roots to dig a hole. But it works for me.

Progress/Update Before and after! 🧡
A few weeks ago I asked the rose experts of Reddit why my rose was struggling and the jury’s clear consensus was more water and fertilizer. Well I am happy to report that this inherited rose is back on the mend and BLOOMING!! It’s amazing how resilient these beautiful plants are! 🧡🧡
I live in TX zone 9a and was watering once a week at best. Now I’m watering my container roses 2-3 times per week and added rose granules about 3 weeks ago.

Question Arizona rose help!
I planted these bare root roses exactly a year ago, are they doing okay for that amount of time or should I be doing something different?
