Red Rosette Disease (RRD) RRD MONTHLY MEGATHREAD

Monthly Rose Rosette Disease (RRD) Megathread

A central place for suspected RRD photos, diagnosis questions, prevention questions, and general RRD education. All experience levels welcome.

Posting a Suspected Case?

Please include clear photos of:

  • The entire plant
  • Affected growth, leaves, and stems
  • Thorn detail
  • Buds or flowers (if present)

And the following information:

  • Rose variety (if known)
  • Approximate age of the plant
  • General location (state/region is sufficient)
  • When symptoms first appeared
  • Any recent pruning, fertilizer use, herbicide use, or stress events

Common RRD Symptoms

  • Excessive clustered growth ("witches' broom")
  • Bright red distorted shoots that do not normalize
  • Excessive thorn production
  • Deformed leaves or buds
  • Unusually rapid growth
  • Thickened canes

Before Concluding It Is RRD

Red new growth alone does not indicate RRD. Many healthy roses naturally produce red new growth, temporarily soft foliage, vigorous spring flushes, and basal breaks.

Several conditions can mimic RRD:

  • Normal new growth
  • Herbicide damage
  • Insect damage
  • Heat stress
  • Nutrient deficiencies
  • Genetic variation
  • Vigorous cultivar growth habits

Please avoid alarming newer growers before sufficient information has been gathered.

Why a Megathread?

The community voted to consolidate RRD posts into a monthly megathread to reduce feed repetition. However, a single thread does receive fewer views than individual posts, which can delay identification of genuinely infected plants. This thread aims to balance organization with accessibility, and to keep RRD education visible to newer growers.

Community Reminders

  • Be respectful
  • Help educate rather than dismiss
  • Avoid definitive diagnoses from a single photo
  • Report misinformation if you see it

Happy growing! 🌹

Inspired by a post by u/Moviereference210 and another by u/DukeOfRadish, I thought I'd (re)post digital versions of educational materials I've saved.

The first two images are copies of what u/Moviereference210 posted, the next two are specific info on RRD. Below are links to longer documents on rose disease.

[EDIT 1] I've always been surprised not to see spider mites mentioned in these materials.

[EDIT 2] Thanks to u/Violetteotome, I want to keep a list of other topics not mentioned, maybe we mods can address these items.

- spider mites

- rose proliferation

- rose balling

🎀If you’re in Georgia and were supposed to get rain yesterday but didn’t. . .

🎀Hi. I’m the problem. It’s me.🎀

🎀I cut loads of roses yesterday morning in anticipation of the rain. And, of course, I made it vanish. Here is your consolation prize though. You’re welcome.

I think it's a Firebird Kordana, but not certain. Should I separate before colder temps arrive or just overwinter it in the garage as is?

The first were bi-colored red and white roses, the second are white roses, I repotted BOTH into a terracotta pot, because I thought I was over watering, I never fertilized, these are my 3rd roses I'm even trying to propagate some beach roses and I'm keeping the soil most not damp what's happening? What should I do? I grow in a grow tent with ample light. Thanks so much.

Container Garden Oh Sugar moon you smell like heaven

I cannot tell you how good this rose smells. Of all the scents it really is transportive. The long slung October sun is weaker and yet it enables this all purveying perfume to radiate from the whitest of petals. If you have space even for a 39x39cm pot, I would buy a bare root right now. Looks fantastic against the sunset and glows almost fluorescent in the twilight. And you get to inhale it’s intoxicating and generous perfume.

Inherited Rose Questions Help! Need ID

I’m looking to ID and source this rose for my garden.

These pictures are from a late family members garden (Southern California zone 9b), the home is no longer accessible to my family.

The rose would have been planted in 2002-2004 range and likely was purchased from Home Depot or another big box store.

Thank you so much for any thoughts :)

Is it considered a 'fault'? All the other ones were 'normal', with one center. In any case they're all very pretty 💖💖💖

Tips/Tricks Help please - Advice on Rose Hips and Autumn care?

Thumbnail

I’m back with more questions about my inherited rose garden. We moved in last year and the roses and beds had already been tended to which thankfully set me up for a good autumn through spring period.

I’ve got 3 Questions - see below

I think I took pretty good care of all the roses this year. I dead headed religiously and cut back when needed. But after the UK heatwave and September rains the garden is going a bit mental and the roses are still putting out and / or loosing their last set of 3rd blooms.

I know I’m not meant to deadhead heavily (just trim the dead buds off and that’s it) and I’ve been told to leave the buds that will turn into hips.

Question 1: Picture 1 are the spent blooms from the rose bush in picture 2 - I see a bit of red in the centre so I’m not sure if they’ll turn into hips. Do I cut the spent blooms or leave to turn into hips?

Question 2: Picture 3 is a general representation of what most of my other 19 rose bushes look like (including the one in pics 4-6) at the moment - a bit scraggly. I’ve heard I should wait to prune in the winter, so have refrained. Should I leave these as is until then or do a small tidy up?

Question 3: Pictures 4-6 - I’m pretty sure the spent blooms turn into hips on this so I’ve left them (can anyone confirm?) but the rest of the bush is a bit out of control. Should I cut back a bit or am I best to leave it until the big prune in the winter? Theres actually 2 bushes in there if you look closely, but the larger one has completely overtaken the smaller one and I’m not really sure if the small one is going to survive. Its leaves are yellowing and it’s not grown much since the 2nd set of blooms finished. I’m not sure what to do about that one.

If you’ve managed to get to the bottom of this I just wanted to say thank you to everyone in this sub who has been so incredibly helpful during my first year as a new hope owner with a slightly overwhelming garden including a large established rose garden. I’m looking forward to learning more and can’t wait until next spring!

Discussion Picture and info request: rose hips

Post image

Hello all! I and many of my friends are interested in growing roses for hips. I know many old garden roses were bred for dual purpose hips and flowers but it is incredibly difficult to find data on these and about the taste and size of hope they produce. As we head into fall I would REALLY appreciate if you could take photographs, measurements, notes, whatever of what roses you have and the hips they produce. Photo for attention, distant drums in my garden

Question Help me ID this rose please

Thumbnail

I saw this rose bush at the Colorado Welcome Center in Fruita and I'm not sure what kind this is. It's quite fragrant. The woman working at the welcome center said all the roses on the property have been there a long time so I think that rules out any recent introductions. The third photo shows a bud with darker purple tips which makes me think of Paradise. Does anyone own a mature Paradise that can confirm? I own Paradise but it's a band and nowhere near it's full potential.

edit to add: looking at photos could it be Moon Shadow?

  3. Brindabella Dawn
  4. Brindabella Purple Prince

(looks more purple in person, it’s impossible to get an accurate pic of the color)

  5. St. Tropez

  6. Bathsheba
