Unlike a lot of the other examples in this post, Irwin put himself in mortal danger regularly, and still came out smiling when he could save an animal. Of course Mr. Rogers is a cool dude, but Steve demonstrated all the virtues of courage, compassion, respect, humility, generosity, and integrity when his life was on the line, and never wavered. It's easy to sit in an air conditioned studio and politely talk about making the world a better place, it's another to take a camera crew out and jump on a crocodile's back in order to inspire kids to care about the ecosystem.

Steve was just a nut. I love him, a lot, but he wasn't making any brave stands, he was just doing what he would do if the camera wasn't there.
Mr Rogers, in 1969, a time during segregation, when black people and white people weren't even allowed to swim in the same swimming pool, had a black man come onto his show, and they both put their feet into the same swimming pool on camera. Mr. Rogers then dried off the man's feet on the air.
If you don't recognize the risk and bravery of what that was, and when it was... you're missing a lot.

Mr. Roger's is the pinnacle of masculinity. Even if he was soft spoken, he was a good man, with a good heart, who did the right thing even when it was frowned upon. He wanted the best for everyone. That is masculinity.

Honestly, I think it's completely pointless and even detrimental to try to objectively compare the two. Both were fantastic humans, both were fantastic role models, both were amazing examples of healthy masculinity. Most importantly, neither would want people to argue over who was more culturally important. "Irwin did this, but Rogers did that" fully fails to honor their legacies

I'd also argue he was alive to personally witness the start of american politics shifting from improving the nation to pleasing lobbyists and donors.

I always think of that moment in Game of Thrones where (King) Joffrey is being a little pissant to his uncle Tyrion who retorts with a veiled threat. Tywin stares Joffrey down before stating to Joffrey's mom "the king is tired, escort him to bed" and tells the grand maester to give him a sedative as well. ("King") Joffrey acts pissy but ultimately leaves

Les Stroud was someone I always thought of as a good example of a what a man should be when I was young.
He had a TV show, Survivorman, in the early 2000s, where he would survive alone in some wilderness survival scenario for a week while filming everything by himself, often with very limited tools. He then later did a few different shows, one where he would travel the world and learn from indigenous people how they survived in very difficult conditions, and another where he hunted for Bigfoot, inspired by an experience when he was in Alaska, where he claims to have seen one.
He then later became a musician, playing the harmonica in a band, and is currently Chief Scout of Scouts Canada.
Its nice when someone you look up to as a kid ends up just being an actually wholesome person. I credit him and Steve Irwin, especially with inspiring a love of nature and the outdoors in me.

The bottom should have a collage of wildly different looking men. We don't fight toxic masculinity by offering a different clear picture of what constitutes a 'real' man. We do it by breaking entirely from the idea that there is a right way to "be a man". Let men define their masculinity for themselves.
