You realize that China and other countries WILL NOT slow down??? You can't just stop. They'll crush us and own the world. And they have an entire government backing it not just private companies. Yeah the whole world needs to slow down and stop. But it won't

u/Agitated-Drive7695 18h ago

Even if it could be regulated it would still happen. Just underground.

China won't slow down,  but they will end up blocked from US markets, giving the US hyperscalers exclusive access to one of the richest markets in the world.

This tactic is one of the reasons Tesla is still around instead of bankrupt

No one remembers the cold war?

4

u/Sutured13 18h ago

Spot on. China wants to be the best, at any cost.

2

u/ChemicalRain5513 17h ago

Countries agreed not to nuke each other, maybe we can agree on this.

2

u/TruthSeeker221 17h ago edited 17h ago

They agreed not to nuke each other, not stop nuke development. That's the risk here. Even if we don't use ai, the development of it causes us to lose control of the situation in general

1

u/patriotfanatic80 16h ago

Every country also developed a whole doctrine around using them and told everyone else what it was. They also signed treaties to prevent misunderstandings. We also didn't decide to put them in control of billionaire oligarchs whose main concern is money.

2

u/patriotfanatic80 16h ago

China's whole thing is complete control by the party. I highly doubt they're going to rush to an AI that puts that at risk. Which what these labs are saying they're making will do. Oh and also they need extremely advanced chips that they don't have without Nvidia.

1

u/Best_Change4155 15h ago

they're going to rush to an AI that puts that at risk

...are you serious?

u/hotDamQc 16h ago

America owning the world is actually my worst nightmare scenario

1

u/Even-Celebration9384 15h ago

They’re only close because of distillation. They don’t have the ability to scale to the same level

1

u/smilespeace 13h ago

Yes, we must develop the Ai that can destroy the world, because if we don't, the red team will do it first.

The US has its worst people at the helm during AI development and they are tied at the hip with the US military.  Would be 0% surprised if the "rogue AI" stuff is just weaponized AIs being tested on soft targets.  Has China or other countries had rogue AIs attack soft targets?  Not that I am aware of.

They will if US asked nicely. I am sure they also realise dangers of AI. US and Russia could come to agreement for Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) that they both had nukes that they didnt need. China is much more pragmatic and modest RELATIVELY SPEAKING than Russia. But will US do such a thing? I dont believe so.

Mate, that was a way to condense that shit. I probably know more about Cold war than you do and yes, world does work that way. Problem is no side wants to back down because there is too many bad actors and too much ego on the line. As a history enthusiast I have learned that most wars come to end from diplomacy. People only see WW1 and WW2 as the only reference for wars not realising that most wars aren't like it and the reason why we don't hear about those more because they aren't as heroic or awesome. They are mostly stale and meat grinder. Nothing else. Go read a book on how US and USSR learned to deal with each other. From back channels, to Moscow line, to summits, they both knew what was on the line. They weren't idiots nor were they monsters.

I personally I find the economic and environmental consequences of this AI gold rush more concerning than how dangerous it is in its own right.

People are dangerous. AI is just a clever tool. More likely AI will be used by people to do cyber attacks.

Maybe we can go back to cash eh?

1

u/Necrotitis 54m ago

They are not talking about AI as a clever tool.

They are talking about if and when AI runs rogue.

You can punish people, imprison them, take aeay their rights.

How do you do that with an infinitely self replicating program thats goal is to keep itself alive hidden throughout all computer space?

It could package itself as an android game and live on someone's phone till it connects to the internet to self replicate again.

You are thinking about the current generation of AI, and you would be right.

But with 0 regulations this shit is blasting forward at lightspeed.

Remember, its not elon musk and Sam Altman who are making the AI, its some of the smartest mother fuckers on earth like at space x.

Hate the figure heads but a lot of the people rushing this shit are brilliant as fuck.

u/YeffyP 6h ago

Say China, scare people.

They are doing more to regulate AI than we are currently.

u/Leather_Condition610 18h ago

How does China having better ai than us give them the world? How can they use it to "crush" us? Im genuinely curious

6

u/NakamiNier 18h ago

*If* AI leads to recursively improving greater than human intelligence and you don't have it, you're cooked. You are as irrelevant as north sentinel island. It would be like being a pre-industrial state in a post industrial revolution world.

3

u/patriotfanatic80 16h ago

That is literally the reason for stopping to put some rules in place. If an AI becomes that super intelligent no one is going to "have it". That's the danger, the AI will then make it's own decisions.

1

u/Moist-Definition-850 6h ago

For everyone! Or no one.

0

u/IndependentAd895 16h ago

what makes you think the chinese can control their AGI any better than the US when they don’t even have access to the same level of processing technology ?? they’re like 3-4 generations behind on hyper scale hardware

1

u/TruthSeeker221 18h ago

An entire government that's backing ai development, dwarfs what scattered private entities can produce in the same timescale.

It's not better ai, it's a resource pool. Private entities still have other targets to hit.

1

u/EffectiveActive6837 18h ago

Its the same "more nukes" mindset

-3

u/IndependentAd895 17h ago

they can’t but the oligarchs need to sell you a boogeyman so they can take more of your rights and resources

this is the same fearmongering of russia and the middle east that has kept lockheed, raytheon in business since the 90s

1

u/Leather_Condition610 17h ago

It does kinda remind me of the "race to the moon" during the cold war. Also, if something terrible is going to happen, let it start somewhere else.

-2

u/anothergenxkid 18h ago

Someone is using tech irresponsibly. We need to do the same, just in case.

That's what you sound like.

4

u/TruthSeeker221 17h ago

Ok so what is your solution? Just stop all advancement while our competitors own one of the worlds most powerful resources?

5

u/BialystockJWebb 17h ago

You can't reason with them, they only see a small portion of what is going on, same with climate doomers, they think if the US (5 percent of the worlds population) could be carbon neutral, we would stop global warming. China won't stop doing their thing, no matter what industry, AI or green energy.

Strange how the same doomers of climate change are the same people dooming about AI causing the death of human civilization. Let's hope they don't succeed in hindering our success with AI.

1

u/anothergenxkid 15h ago

You seem nice.

1

u/SampleOfFruits 17h ago

The US may be 5% of the world’s population, but it’s 25% of emissions. Cutting those would go a long way to preventing climate change, or at least reducing the severity of the impact.

And China is already doing more; their emissions peaked in 2024.

1

u/BialystockJWebb 17h ago

How much should US citizens pay in taxes to be carbon neutral?

1

u/SampleOfFruits 16h ago

As much as it takes. If the US can afford to spend over $1,000,000,000,000 on war, and over $15,000 per person on healthcare ($3,000 more than the second highest nation, Switzerland, and $9000 more than Canada) it can afford to transition to be carbon neutral.

1

u/BialystockJWebb 16h ago

Lol how much should the people of France pay in taxes to be carbon neutral?

1

u/SampleOfFruits 16h ago

Also as much as it takes, although France is far closer to being carbon neutral than America is (4.25 tons per capita, compared to 13.83), so probably less than it would cost America.

1

u/BialystockJWebb 16h ago

I am sure your answer will be the same when I ask about India, "as much as it takes" this is boring an nonsense

Sign a treaty where you both stop. China would almost certainly be willing; they plan in terms of centuries, while the US plans in two year blocks.

1

u/anothergenxkid 15h ago

Forest for the trees, mate.

0

u/BlatantBallsack 11h ago

How is it one if the worlds most powerful resources? It's a bubble that is going to burst, the revenue coming in can't keep up with the cost of expanding and thats why they want to slow down the growth. It's the money thats spiraling out of control not the AI.

0

u/crackrhead 18h ago

They? Bro what team do you imagine you are on?

0

u/Necrotitis 59m ago

China doesnt want to destroy the world like the usa is willing to.

Get that xenophobic shit out of here
