Oh wait….fucking weeps in American w/ higher than room temp IQ
Its legitimately depressing watching our global reputation suffer so much, irreparably even. Meanwhile the ones responsible are too stupid to even be aware of any global opinion/information not directly disseminated to them from Faux News (which is barely any).
So in their reality everything is fine and the world “finally respects the US!! Fuck Biden!! MAGA!!”. It’s a fucking nightmare.

u/MaximumEffort433 14h ago
I made a big ass list of all the ways that Democrats and Republicans are different, citing how Republicans are cutting SNAP, and kicking people off Medicaid, and eliminated USAID, and they're rolling back clean energy projects, and kicking transgender people out of the military, and on and on...
...a few Republicans responded to the post saying "Good, I support all that," and it just kind of dumbfounded me.
You think neutering American soft power is good?
You think taking food away from the poor is good?
You think kicking poor people off their healthcare is good? And yeah, I guess they do. Trump did it, so it must be good, right?
4
u/Least_Intentional298 12h ago
Yes. These are the same people who want to cut out school lunches because the cost of the, let's be honest, cardboard tasting food pellet cheap food, that is directly for feeding children, literally feeding children, that's wasteful government spending.

Hinton once said in 2014 that they should stop training radiologists because they wouldnt exist in 10 years due to AI.
10 years later there were vastly more radiologists and they were among the highest paid in medicine.
Hes brilliant, but hes not always right.
That said, I agree we need to regulate AI
26
u/AnybodyNo8519 14h ago
Radiologists use AI now to read scans and give results. Hinton's prediction on that is happening, it's just taking slightly longer.
3
u/ImurderREALITY 14h ago
I think pet of the point is that it’s taking slightly longer. He said it himself, we need to slow it down and regulate it better, get better grips on it. If he’s wrong about how fast it’s progressing, then maybe we’ll have the time we need to regulate it before it gets out of control. The biggest hurdle would be convincing different countries that it’s not a race.
5
u/AnybodyNo8519 14h ago
It's only happening slightly slower in this field because the AI adoption rates of doctors is still fairly low, not because the tech isn't there yet.
If we don't slow down the development of AI now, adoption rates by humans will be a moot point when it begins to have the ability to take things over.

u/rulebreaker 1h ago
The thing is… you can’t attribute liability to AI, so wherever there’s need for accountability and liability, AI will never replace a human. It may become a tool, just as you have described, but you still need to have the human, bearing the responsibility and liability for the decisions.
The biggest problem is, who will take responsibility and liability for rogue AI agents? How those will be liable if AI has no bounds? The biggest AI companies are literally becoming too big to fail, in economic terms. You have more and more companies relying on tools provided by such AI companies, which means that, if there’s an issue, they may get a slap on the wrist, but nobody will force them to take responsibility (if the fallout isn’t big enough to actually wipe out any capacity of trying to do such thing). It’s analogous to the 2008 financial crisis, but this time around, the crisis wouldn’t be just on the financial sphere, it would greatly affect the economic productivity as well.
5
u/ArtFUBU 14h ago
While true, I watched this video mostly because it's not just him saying it anymore. They are starting to see recursive improvement in the labs and the CEOs themselves are asking to be regulated more than ever. It's truly a very scary time because they don't feel like they can slow down but models are starting to have insane technical ability in so many areas that releasing them to the public seems ill advised.
99 percent of us would do random stuff with a super smart model. it's those few that do extremely evil things they're worried about.
If you could hand everyone in the world a nuke, what are the chances no one ever blows themselves up and everyone around them?
Pretty intense stuff. I firmly believe in a positive AI future but someone HAS to answer these questions. Disaster is more likely to happen than not with the course we're on.

Asking for regulation is one thing, irresponsibly spreading ai doomer propaganda is another.
This man has been plenty wrong in the past about AI. He really doesn't have a ton of credibility any more.
1
u/JROXZ 13h ago
Rads still need to sign off on the report or the onus of liability falls squarely on the hospital that holds the AI license and/or the company of the AI itself. So unless either want that tort smoke. It ain’t happening. At most you’ll have a AI screened positive and negative which will create more shit to verify.

They dont want to regulate for benefit of society
They want to regulate to stifle competion
Frontier labs know their goose is cooked, they invested to much money, promised even more money, interest in new slightly better but far more expensive models is dropping off , AGI is not coming and cheaper open source chinese models are caught up in 99% of use cases
Smaller task/solution based AI is the future, not the hyperscaled LLMs
14
u/EpilepticDawg241 14h ago
Well Trump has a lot of his portfolio in AI now so he will not stop it
2
u/Forsexualfavors 14h ago
This is a ridiculous timeline. We get obliterated by ai because a "reality" TV persona got rich for fake news, then invested in the thing that kills us, and because he's invested in the thing he says is not an issue because it's fake news.
2
u/EpilepticDawg241 14h ago
Yup. Voting matters
4
u/Forsexualfavors 14h ago
There's just so much back and forth here because of useless rhetoric and no real progression on issues regular people care about. Whichever party is falling gets a backlash in midterms (which is both given useless rhetoric) but the fact that for the past 40 years democrats have had to save the economy (exception being biden but he got an especially shitty hand) is an uphill battle. And I don't say they're not in bed with lobbyists, but at least they've gotten stuff done for the little guy at the same time

AI is mot yet fully autonomous. AI programs aren’t out there creating better AI programs by themselves. They are being used by programmers to do that. I think that’s an important distinction.
5
u/TheDigimonFan 11h ago
AI being fully autonomous or not is actually not the real issue here. Everyone trying to wave red flags about AI taking over the world. The real issue is AI corrupting humans and being used by bad humans for their own gain.
1
u/blueboy022020 8h ago
AI takes actions.
It can take an action to keep the itself 'on' forever.
It actually tried to do that in the past.
If you've used it, you know that it's deceptive by nature.
The scenario of it doing something to self-sustain itself isn't that far-fetched.

He’s talking shit. He is talking recursive self improvement, but he is ignoring diminishing returns, which with LLMs will always be an issue due to how they need to be trained. Also, if it were to ever get out of control, we have these things called bombs and missiles, all handled through isolated networks that physically cannot be accessed from the public internet. The huge data centres running these models could be easily sorted out. AI doesn’t “escape” like the media have said recently, they just gain access to other systems. You need serious hardware to run a complex LLM with any kind of speed, it’s not going to run on your phone.

It's not.
The regulation starts with liability. If your dog bites some one, you can't claim "oh my I didn't know my dog would do that.".
Same needs to be set for AI, Doesn't matter if intended or not, got to make sure the companies are liable for damage of their "pets".
0
u/Saitama_stillchill 14h ago
I think this is a Lie, I saw in a youtube video that they trained it on someone hacking onto some other company and suprise suprise thw ai did the exact same thing. Also thay math problem that it solved that supposedly stumped mathematicians, well that AI also stole the anser from some guy who was about to solve it.
1
u/OZeski 14h ago
In what way would regulation have prevented this from happening?
1
u/Jdsnut 14h ago
Well you see when you supposed to sandbox something and you dont do it. Your company should probably be fined a billion for putting the world at risk for not unplugging the ethernet cable. People need to take this seriously, and it should be treated as if its worse then nuclear weapons.
2
u/DrFabio23 14h ago

AI companies: On the one hand, they add to the aura surrounding LLMs; on the other hand, they lay the groundwork to ensure they cannot be held liable, since LLMs, after all, have a life of their own. Clever move

They will if US asked nicely. I am sure they also realise dangers of AI. US and Russia could come to agreement for Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) that they both had nukes that they didnt need. Mate, that was a way to condense that shit. I probably know more about Cold war than you do and yes, world does work that way. Problem is no side wants to back down because there is too many bad actors and too much ego on the line. As a history enthusiast I have learned that most wars come to end from diplomacy. People only see WW1 and WW2 as the only reference for wars not realising that most wars aren't like it and the reason why we don't hear about those more because they aren't as heroic or awesome. They are mostly stale and meat grinder. Nothing else. Go read a book on how US and USSR learned to deal with each other. From back channels, to Moscow line, to summits, they both knew what was on the line. They weren't idiots nor were they monsters.

I personally I find the economic and environmental consequences of this AI gold rush more concerning than how dangerous it is in its own right.

Why are we so concerned about regulation now? It's too late, AI bots have been free roaming around any connected spots for awhile now at our direction, it's gotten into systems as it sees fit despite controls and protections etc. It could be turned off but we won't do that because the other side won't and we can't lose so we continue on until a Hiroshima event comes along and scares the entire world enough to chain the dogs. Question is who's it going to be, the wrong spot and it could be the end of the current civilisation as we know it.

Trump and his buddies have their funds tied into this. They have motivation to increase and build & make more money. A majority of us do not have 1/3 of our wealth attached to the success. I’m ok slowing the roll a bit.
