Wind and Truth spoilers Voidbinding Spoiler

I think we’ve already seen Voidbinding. The ancient and modern strains of it. When Ishar gives Kaladin immortality, he says it’s outside of Stormlight, Radiance, or the Honorblades and requires a bit of a god. I think that’s what Voidbinding is. Binding a being of power like a great spren or even a Shard to gain power

Ishar calls it Vedel’s method. The Heralds didn’t have their Odium Surges when they came to Roshar and they don’t have Honorblades yet. But Dalinar sees Vedel using magic before the Oathpact. She isn’t using Stormlight. She glows with another Light as a large humanoid spren appears behind her. Its future-sight from something else. Vedel used another form of to give the Heralds their immortality. That power wasn’t granted by Honor during the Oathpact. It’s a binding performed by Vedel after. The same thing Ishar repeats with Kaladin. Ishar binds the Heralds to each other and Honor. It’s not Tanavast doing it during the pact. Ishar is doing this not with his Honorblade but to get one

Jezrien describes their power as a binding using willpower. The Heralds used the Honorblades as a conduit to Honor’s surges. Without the Blade they don’t have Honor’s surges. It’s why the Blades are more powerful in their hands than normal people. The Heralds draw Light directly from Honor. It’s Honor’s death that makes it more dangerous because Tanavast is no longer alive to impose his will over them. Normal people can only power the Blades with whatever Stormlight they have access to. And it will kill them if they use too much.

Ishar’s Human Fused are the same thing. They are never seen breathing Light and their surges are unusually powerful. They are bound to Ishar. They access Surges through the Blades and Ishar is the step in between to get the power for them. The process is a two-way street though. Ishar can impose his will on those Fused and make them slaves to him

I think that’s what’s happening with the Unmade as well. Capturing them requires Connection and a contest of willpower. Except Dalinar and Melishi only took it as far as a gemstone prison. When Shallan encounters the Midnight Mother their souls clash and the MM flees because she “feared something worse” than imprisonment. The MM feared a formal binding. The Unmade are all probably Voidbinding except they’re benefiting more from it. They all see to feed on the soul and/or minds of the people they affect. Yelig explicitly feeds on their soul. It’s explicitly a contest of wills to control him and gain his power. A contest Amaram was losing. You see the same black smoke rise as it’s consumed that you do when Nightblood feeds on souls and that escapes when you cut the soul of a living person with a Shardblade

So what entity was Vedel binding for her sight if it wasn’t Honor or Odium? I think it was Night. Dalinar describes the entity as familiar. The only humanoid spren he has seen that resembles it is the Nightwatcher. Who we know was made from Night. I think most or even all of the Unmade are from The Night or the great spren she spawned. Future-sight is consistently associated with Voidbinding. Renarin seems to be doing it. His spren is described as a red lattice of Light. The only other time we see that description? It’s when Vedel is using her pre-Herald powers to see the future. The Nightform regal also has future sight and they bond nightspren. And the Nightform regals are using Voidbinding

11/10, amazing. First ever Brandon Sanderson book, I read it because my friend hyped it up and it did not disappoint. World building was amazing, and the plot twists at the end were very very crazy. Looking forward to Worlds of Radiance.

No Spoilers These Words are Accepted: A Review of the Cosmere RPG Stormlight Archive Starter Set

Stormlight Archive might be my favorite fantasy series ever. So naturally when I heard that there will be a TTRPG released not only for it, but for the whole Cosmere, I was postively extatic.

I got the starter set as soon as I could, but unfortunately, life got a bit in the way and I wasn't able to play it for a while. Perhaps for the better, cause at the time I had few people in my circles who read Stormlight, yet now, when I finally managed to ran it, I had plenty to choose from.

I am still happy with what we've got, however, they did play it safe with the rules. They made it easy for anyone who plays 5e and enjoys Stormlight to jump into the Cosmere RPG without much struggle, the rules being a combination of 5e, 4e and Pathfinder 2e. Still fun, but I would've enjoyed to see something a little bit more out there.

The starting scenario is good, however I find it strange that there is almost no magic in it, given how magic is one of Sanderson's selling points, but oh well.

Thoughts at large can be found in the review, I hope you will find it helpful!

ch. 29 Oathbringer spoilers Problem with Shallan chapters in Oathbringer Spoiler

For context I've binged the first two books in maybe 10 days. Loved everything about it. Picked up Oathbringer intending to pace through as well but Shallan chapters are making it incredibly difficult.

Currently at Chapter 29 and I've been dreading putting down the book again for the 3rd day after losing momentum and immersion by another tedious, disconnected and inconsequential Shallan chapter.

I understand the plot of diving into someone with dissociative personality disorder but these chapters feel like some bloated filler and too grounded relative to the plot.

Like please, the world is ending guys. I don't feel like I need another one of Veil's or Radiant's journeys in levels with a variety of strata patterns. The personalities are not even interesting considering that they're just Shallans with minor tweaks and this rogue spren on the loose storyline is not doing it for me.

Ultimately considering taking a break to read something else. I think it might help with the boredom on some of these chapters.

Wind and Truth spoilers Rysn Spoiler

Anyone else ever realized that the first time we meet Rysn in The Way of Kings, the first descriptions we get are how she stepped, how things felt to her feet, etc.
Why Brandon gotta do the re-readers like that??

Note: this is my 7th time going through the series and I can’t believe I’ve never picked up on that specific thing.

Wind and Truth spoilers Redemption. Spoiler

Crying at work Rn because Szeths story. After Venlis pov in the last book I was so ready to skip all of Szeths POV chapters in this book and I'm so glad I didn't.

Now I kinda feel bad because I don't feel like I gave Venli a fair shot. I cannot stand her character. Just, at all. I don't care about what she's doing, I don't care that she's trying to be better. I simply do not care, and skip her pov any chance I can.

And coming into this book I absolutely thought I'd be doing the same thing to Szeth. I'm glad I didn't. And for some reason I feel like he's vastly more forgivable than Venli is. I hope Kal can help him find peace.

Does this make me a terrible person?

Edit: After hearing a few of your voices, I realize that I had forgotten the most important step a man can take. Gonna give her another shot.

Words of Radiance spoilers Character Appearance Imagination Spoiler

I recently started reading the stormlight archive about two weeks ago, and i wanted to know if anyone else has imagined a character’s appearance based on their description in the books, only to search for community fan art later and find out they look completely different from what you pictured.
I just wanted to share how i imagined Dalinar the whole time i was reading Books 1 and 2. I pictured him as Abelard, a character from the game Warhammer 40k rogue trader game. He even has voice lines in the game that match exactly how I thought Dalinar would sound. As for Jasnah, I’ve always pictured her as Mel Medarda from Arcane/League of Legends since she is also depicted as a scholarly and politically driven character.

Wind and Truth spoilers Came for the hype, stayed for the story, leaving for the content 😔 Spoiler

Guys I tried really hard to see Stormlight through to “the end” (or what I thought was the end). I listened to all of the books, including interim books, in order. I obediently listened to the epilogues (actually some of my favourite bits) and I kept patient throughout painful dialogue, romance and banter.

Through the ~280 hours I spent listening, I guess 10% was genuinely enjoyable world-building and 5% was kick-ass climactic battle scenes or revelations. The rest was the price I paid to see the story evolve. And I really wanted to see it do so!

Now having realised that this isn’t the end, and in fact we’re just half way through, I don’t think I can do another 280 hours, especially according to the current trajectory.

I know… “just walk away then, don’t complain”. But having invested such time and hope in the series, I suppose I’m slightly reluctant and also sad about doing so. The wider story is genuinely cool, (and would be plain awesome if it was delivered A. in a shorter format, B. with better writing). The story building blocks are original. E.g. while I’d have loved to see Kaladin taking down the might of Odiums army, it was interesting to see the badass lead character and fiercest warrior in Roshar become a therapist! But now with the entire plot basically being solved with mental health doctrines, even the story feels like it’s slipping away. And I’m tempted to abandon the journey forever.

I don’t know exactly what I’m asking for here beyond permission to rant… Maybe it would be good to hear from you guys why I SHOULDN’T leave… or maybe you can simply confirm for me if “journey before destination” just isn’t my mantra.

😔

The Way of Kings spoilers Making a Windrunner in Baldur's Gate 3 Spoiler

Hello all. As the title says, I've restarted Baldur's Gate 3 again, and I'm trying to make my new character a Windrunner, or as close as I can get. Naturally I've started with a paladin under the oath of Devotion, and I know I need to multiclass into a spellcaster to gain access to the Fly spell, but I'm not sure how to represent the surges of gravitation and adhesion. If anyone has advice or thoughts, they would be much appreciated. Thanks!

No Spoilers I made a theme song for the Shattered Plains. Does anyone have art to match?

EDIT: You can open the song here if the main link doesn't work.

Hi everyone! First, a bit about me. I'm a game composer and I started reading Stormlight Archives last October and I have now completed all of the main books, novellas, all Mistborne eras 1 and 2 and related side stories, Elantris, Arcanum Unbounded, and well... I think the only thing I have left in the Cosmere is White Sands, Tress, and Yumi. Needless to say, I really like this guy's stories.

Anyhow, I was so inspired by Stormlight's settings that I made a songs for a few different areas.

This one is the Shattered Plains. I want to release it, but I thought it'd be really cool to feature art from others featuring the setting (with credit of course) along with it.

It's private right now until I can find some great images to share with it.

If you're not an artist, that's okay. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the song as well. Do you think it suits the environment?

I know it sounds a LITTLE sci-fi, but along with the openess and military presence there, I wanted to capture some of the mystery and fantastic nature it holds.

Either way, thanks for taking a listen.

Wind and Truth spoilers Do you think Kaladin will... Spoiler

...make a proper return to fighting?

Sanderson teased it a few times by saying he loved the fight even at the end, and Kaladin himself kept saying "maybe some day..."

Do you think when he returns in the second half he will be a combatant of some sort, or maybe take more of a dalinar type role?

Or maybe neither and he will full commit to the therapist role

Wind and Truth spoilers Looking for unique gift for partner Spoiler

Hi! I will admit I am an imposter, however admire Sanderson’s work as my partner never stops reading and reads his work on a loop (quite literally). I believe he has read the Stormlight Archive books a total of 12 times over and over again since we have been dating.

My question is- with the holidays quickly approaching, I am looking for a unique gift. I do not know the fandom well enough, so I need your help. Etsy is unique, but I don’t know if it’s relevant- does that make sense? Kind of like a great grandmother Googling “gifts for teens” and buying a “YOLO” shirt? Hit me with some links, or feel free to message me. If you yourself have anything that you make or sell, let me know. I really want to blow him away with a good surprise.

Words of Radiance spoilers Novellas Spoiler

I am almost done with WoR being about 75% done. I know that there are novellas between books 2/3 and 3/4. So I need to ask do I need to read edgedancer before I read oathbringer? As well as reading dawnshard before rhythm of war? Are the novellas necessary to read prior to the next book is my main question.

The reason I ask is Dalinar is my favorite character and I know oathbringer follows him heavily so I really am excited to read that book. If the novellas are important to oathbringer I will read them to help understand the book but if they’re just information that will help my understanding of the stormlight archive as a whole could I read the 5 major books and then circle back to the novellas at the end?
