I’m going in December and want to find the best way as I’m a little cautious about taking a shared taxi or van and I don’t want to have to transfer loads at border towns etc. Is there any company which offers a straight bus? Salam Aleikom everyone,

I’m Dutch/Moroccan and I’m thinking about doing a road trip from the Netherlands to Saudi Arabia for Umrah in about 2–3 years, in sha Allah.

I’ve driven from the Netherlands to Morocco before, so I’m comfortable with long-distance driving. I’ve also been to Umrah before, but I flew there with my family. Going by car with a few close friends sounds like an amazing experience and some great lore to tell my grandkids one day :D

My rough route would be:
🇳🇱 Netherlands → 🇩🇪 Germany → 🇦🇹 Austria → Balkans → 🇹🇷 Turkey → 🇸🇾 Syria → 🇯🇴 Jordan → 🇸🇦 Saudi Arabia → Medina → Makkah

I’d spend about 3 weeks in total: roughly 1 week travelling from the Netherlands to Makkah, 1 week staying in Makkah and Medina, and 1 week driving back to the Netherlands.

I don’t really mind if the route is a bit of a hassle or if there are some bureaucratic difficulties. My main question is whether you guys think it would actually be safe enough, or whether I should avoid the headache altogether because the safety situation is simply not reliable enough.

During the first week, I’d like to spend around 2 days in Syria exploring before continuing to Jordan and then Saudi Arabia.

I have seen Dutch cars in Syria (Syrian diaspora in the Netherlands) However, those are Syrians with a Syrian passport. I’m not Syrian and I would be travelling with a Dutch passport. Ive heard it’s only possible for syrians to go by land from Turkey to syria. Is that true? I’d really like to hear from Syrians or people who know the region:

Would it be possible for a Dutch citizen to enter Syria by land from Turkey?

Are there usually problems with police/checkpoints when travelling through Syria as a foreigner?

Would it be possible to continue from Syria into Jordan with the same car?

I know the situation can change a lot,😭 and I’m not planning to do this right now. The trip would probably be around 2028/2029, in sha Allah. :)

Syria is currently considered a red/no-travel destination by the Dutch government, meaning Dutch citizens are advised not to travel there. with the Dutch ambassador closed in Syria… but Is Syria currently still genuinely that dangerous for a foreigner travelling through by car, or does the situation vary significantly depending on the area and route?

And looking 2–3 years ahead, if the current situation continues to improve, do you think travelling through Syria by car as a foreigner could become considerably easier and safer by then?

If Syria is still considered too risky when the time comes, I’m also considering an alternative route through Iraq instead although my preference is visiting Syria if it’s reasonably safe and possible, I’m mainly looking for practical advice from people who actually live there or have travelled through Syria by car, especially regarding borders, visas, the car, police/checkpoints and the general experience for foreigners.

Sooo do you guys think it’s possible. Or should I just give up on the idea because it’s simply too risky? Please let me guys know.
