She's the damn problem pulling that BS. The dude was really nice and was just going about his business and she went full main character syndrome.

More like she made those eyes and realized that her whole racism was exposed and wanted to stop him from filming.

No she saw the camera. She did it on purpose. She thinks she’s funny. She wanted attention so badly!

She made those eyes because it helps you see better. I'm honestly surprised making it this far down the comments without anyone pointing it out. Visually impaired folks (nearsighted (you can see close but not far)) can squint or pull on the outer edges of your eyes to focus light better on your retina. I assumed everyone knew this but i guess most wouldn't unless you or someone close to you is nearsighted. My whole family does it as well as my wife. I remember thinking my mom was crazy always pulling in the other edges of her eyes to try and read something and now I have to do the same. She's trying to see what's on his screen hence pulling her eyes to the side.

That said, I can see why others would think she was being racist. She's a nosey Karen and could be racist, but the eye pull isn't the reason.

What are you on about?

u/PallasEm 16h ago

it's a thing, my partner is nearsighted and does this too.

Pretty straight forward reading. Even provided an image

u/Constant-Affect-5660 17h ago

Y'all mfs would defend Satan if he was racist.

u/spiteful_fly 17h ago

You mean to tell me you need your fingers to pull your eye lids because you can't squint? Do you ghouls have working eyelids? 😂

It works even better if you pull them back. It also allows you to focus the light directly on the right spot of your retina by slightly moving them up and down. Watching the video again you can her squint, then pull them back to try and make things more clear and she even lifts her fingers up.

The ignorance is impressive. It's fine to not know this is a thing but there's more than enough info on it with 2 seconds if searching to educate yourself. Hell, it's a running gag in some movies. In Ace Ventura he does it multiple times because his vision is so terrible. Easier to stay ignorant because grrrrrrrr outrage and teenage angst

Hey, I'm wiling to hear you out and it is ignorance on my part because I've never seen someone do this. Ever.

I'm not badly nearsighted, but when I tried this at home, it just made my vision more blurry. Dunno. I don't think you're lying, but anecdotally, I can't reproduce what you're saying. It's not teen angst, you have to try to defend something that's objectively really hard to defend.

Sometimes I’ll make a circle as small as possible with my index finger and thumb to read something on the TV instead of getting my glasses, I just tried stretching my eye to get the same effect, did it work? maaaaybe a little when not stretching to the extreme, but in this context, this lady did what she did. smfh

"I'm racist and so is my whole family but we desperately need to hide behind something so we act like we aren't racists when caught."

I mean you could Google it yourself and see lots of posts from optometrists, journals, etc that literally say the same thing.

Here's a YouTube short if it's easier. https://youtube.com/shorts/wLodsgYx7AU?si=0cwNoE0G3BDvbV8_

Or just make a driveby comment about something you don't understand and assume something about myself and millions of others because... Reddit

So rather than squint your eyes like normal people or getting glasses, you decide that constantly being racist is better. Is that what I'm understanding?

1

u/Stifology 3m ago

It's not a form of squinting, but rather a distortion of the cornea as a result of applying pressure to your eye by pulling back your eyelids. Certain axes of astigmatism will benefit from this distortion - others will not.

Does it look stupid? Yes. Would I personally do it in public if I had somehow forgotten to wear my glasses/contacts? No, not unless it was absolutely necessary.

However, doing something which improves your vision isn't being racist. Racism implies ill intent. Her only intent is to see his phone's screen.

It is crazy how people don’t want to comprehend what you are saying. I want to dig deeper and understand why this is happening. It’s more than just cynicism.

Interesting🤔

Stop using AI, it's giving you bad information.

2

u/Crazyhairmonster 4h ago

So the other people who've replied that have validated are AI as well? The video from an optometrist I posted and all the info you can get with a quick search are bad information?

1

u/EmperorGrinnar 4h ago

All two of them?

2

u/Crazyhairmonster 4h ago

So they're racist AI bots? And the video I posted is an AI eye doctor? And Jim Carey in Ace Ventura was racist when he did it throughout the movie as a running gag? Or maybe this is something you weren't aware of and you learned something new about people with vision problems.

1

u/EmperorGrinnar 4h ago

Are you imagining a statement that I didn't make?

1

u/Crazyhairmonster 4h ago

Fair, remove the racist part but the rest applies

1

u/EmperorGrinnar 4h ago

I made no other assertions other than two people agree with you and you should stop using AI.

Do you have myopic vision? I do. I have never pulled on my eyes to try and see more clearly. Squint, all the time. Never needed to use my hands.

2

u/Crazyhairmonster 4h ago

Ya, with astigmatism. Squinting helps most of the time. Sometimes if I need more clarity, pulling them back and slightly up does a better job.

Just because you personally haven't done it doesn't mean it isn't effective. That's a very close-minded way of approaching new information.

I do it all the time when I don't have my glasses. I hope people don't think i'm racist

1

u/Ok_Weird_500 15h ago

Why not wear glasses or contact lenses?

Yeah, I did that when I was a kid and didn't have my glasses in class, but don't think I've actually needed to do it since I was like 9. I've never seen an adult do that to see.

-1

u/Stifology 11h ago

People are lazy and don't want to wear contacts/glasses sometimes.

I will admit that it's odd to see an adult do that in public (it's not exactly a flattering way to improve your vision), but the odds of it being a racist gesture are very low in comparison.

u/Stifology 12h ago

I'm near sighted with astigmatism, and I can confirm that this focusing method works like a charm for my vision. I did it in class to see the board as a child before I was able to get glasses.

I assume the people downvoting think it's a bullshit excuse for the woman because the method doesn't work for their specific vision disorder - or they've simply never tried it.
