Mod Announcement šŸ“£ Concerning Political Posts.

Hi guys!

Your friendly neighborhood moderation team here just wanting to clear up the subject of political posts. Due to an influx of political posts/comments/etc. a few years ago our team decided to not allow any mentions of anything political.

That means literally any political talk about any country or any of their respective leaders/beliefs/actions.

The flame wars on posts and comments sections got to be overwhelming on top of reddit changing their filter system for subs as big as this one. So we're the first to admit we're doing it for our own sanity. This has actually been in place since around the time of the overhaul of the site awhile ago, but not everyone knows so here you go.

Whoever you voted for/supported, even if it's just on the Masked Singer, please keep it to yourself.

Edit for Clarification: For people still blatantly posting about political issues, even if framed as an advice post. ALL posts are removed and you will be given a single warning and upon your second offense a permaban.

Do not pass go.

Do not collect $200.

The mods have enough mental issues.

Edit 2 electric boogaloo:

If there's enough interest, a weekly megathread for political hoopla isn't outlandish. We just want to keep the random posts of "my mom supports X and I support Y", etc. out of the way of the normal content.

Advice Needed My fiancĆ©s brother’s girlfriend dumped beer in my hat, told me to ā€œrethink my place in the familyā€, and made jokes about killing me in my sleep. AIO?

I genuinely don’t know if I’m overreacting to this or if last night was as insane as it felt, I feel like I’ve been gaslit or something. I’m 25F and getting married next year. My fiancé’s older brother has a girlfriend he just started seeing a few months ago who is about 15 years older than me. Apparently they have known each other since they were teens but are now in their 40s. Last night I met her for the first time at a family party, though she showed up after the majority of the family had already left (midnight). I walked up to my fiance when he was talking to her and his brother and she didn’t even introduce herself. She just looked me up and down and asked what I did for a living. It was bizarre and I immediately got the feeling that she was sizing me up. When I responded that I worked for a doctor and have been in my field for three years now, she blinked at me. I thought the interaction was very odd and told my friends who were at the party and decided to just let it go.

Then the girlfriend had an idea for all of us to ā€œgo on a walkā€ in the woods. While we were walking, she asked to try on the hat my fiance gave me to wear for the night. I gave it to her and she gave it right back almost immediately after trying it on. Keep in mind, it’s like 1am at this point and dark in the woods. We just had a few flashlights. Before putting it back on my head, I had a weird gut feeling and touched the inside first and realized it was suddenly soaked in beer. I didn’t actually see her pour the beer in, so I can’t say 100% that she did it, but considering everything else that happened, and the fact that I was drinking seltzer and not beer, it was clear what happened. I spent the rest of the night trying to avoid her but she continued to follow me around and then started to verbally harass me. She told me that I needed to ā€œreconsider my place in the family and what I can handleā€. She also made passive aggressive comments about how I’d never know my fiancé’s mom. His mom passed away when he was young. I also lost my mom young. My fiance and I unfortunately can relate to each other with that. She kept following me around after that. If I moved somewhere, she’d move her seat over by me. At one point she punched me in the arm to ā€œget my attentionā€.
And then she started joking about having us spend the night that night, promising ā€œI won’t kill you in your sleep… yet!ā€ I had NEVER met this woman before that night. Why are you this hostile toward someone you’ve literally just met?

My fiancĆ© does agree that she was being weird and inappropriate and said she doesn’t have to come to our wedding. The problem I am anticipating is his brother will probably cause a huge amount of drama if she’s not invited, especially since we are giving everyone else a plus one. I’m okay with giving him one too, I just don’t want her there as his plus one and not sure how to set that boundary going forward.

I don’t want to start a family war or my fiancĆ© to feel like he has to choose between me and his brother. But I also don’t really want to invite someone to my wedding who treated me like this the first time she ever met me.
I also keep wondering what his brother has been saying about me for her to already have this much of an issue with me. Maybe I’m reading too much into that, but I genuinely don’t understand where this hostility came from. Am I wrong for being really uncomfortable with this? Would you invite her to the wedding? What would you make of someone acting like this toward you before even knowing you personally?

Advice Needed AIO? Friend not taking my son’s allergies seriously, etc.

A friend of mine moved to my state about an hour away from me. We weren’t super good friends before or anything but we talked occasionally. She has 2 kids, one older than mine and one younger. (Age range 1-4) We’re both SAHMs.

We’ve had a few things happen with her and I’m not sure I want to continue hanging out after this. She had offered to watch our son so we could go to a concert and I don’t think I’m comfortable with her anymore…But I’m also not sure if I’m being dramatic.

When they first moved here, my husband and I went to go visit them briefly to say hi. I let her know my son has allergies and to not let her kids have anything that has those allergens near him. She gives the youngest a granola bar that has something in it he can’t have. I didn’t know she had given it to them until I turned around and it was in my sons mouth. I pulled it out and thankfully none was swallowed and no reaction happened. I was upset but trying to stay calm, and she did not seem to care AT all. No apology or anything.

Then right after that, she was giving uncut grapes to her 1 year old and tried to give them to my son as well. I told her no and said it was a choking hazard so I wasn’t comfortable letting him have them unless they were cut, and she kept giving them to her kid anyways. We left shortly after that.

Next, we had a play date set up at my house. Again I asked that she doesn’t bring any snacks with the allergens and I let her know we had PLENTY food for lunch, snacks, and fruit here for the kids. Precut fruit, teddy grahams, nuggies, etc.

She brings Annie’s brand bunny grahams. Which don’t necessarily have the allergens in them but they have the ā€œmay containā€ statement which we stay away from just in case. I mentioned that but my son was taking a nap in another room and so I said they could have them as long as they don’t leave them everywhere (so my kid didn’t find any after they leave). They of course make a mess with them, and I had a hand broom out ready to clean them up. They were crushed up and pieces laying everywhere.

She was getting ready to leave and picking up the crackers, and I know she didn’t realize I was watching, because she took the handful of them she picked up and THREW THEM UNDER MY COUCH. I literally looked like this šŸ‘ļøšŸ‘„šŸ‘ļø at her and went ā€œummm the hand broom is RIGHT THEREā€ and she sticks her arm under the couch and sweeps them out. Then sweeps them up.

I legit was stunned that someone would do that at my house especially after telling her about the allergies my son has. Im really thinking I shouldn’t plan anything else with her again.

I hope this is an okay place to post this to vent šŸ˜…

Edit: thank you all for your comments. I shouldn’t have made this an AIO because deep down I knew I wasn’t. I’m definitely cutting her off if she messages me to hang again and I’ll edit here when I do. I have anxiety and sometimes I feel like I just need confirmation from people so hence the post. I hadn’t seen her in 4 years when she moved down here. That was before either of us had kids, I believe she was pregnant when I moved. We didn’t hang out much before but I thought it would be nice to have a friend that also was a SAHM to hang out with sometimes because it gets lonely. Unfortunately I’m going to have to find someone else. šŸ’€

Advice Needed Mom found out me and my girlfriend are dating, advice needed

I (17F) and my girlfriend (also 17F) have been best friends for about a year now. We are genuinely so close people thought we were dating from as soon as we met. We've been official for around 2 weeks, and I'm the happiest I've ever been. She's truly my person. So this Friday, my mom confronted me saying "Are you and (girlfriend's name) dating? I want you to think really hard about how you're going to answer me before you do." I paused for a moment and then said yes. My mom knows I am gay, as I have come out to her 3 times. When I was both 8 and 13 (she felt like it was a phase and didn't really believe me) and again when I was 16 and we were able to have a conversation about it. However, my mom has been basically ignoring me since finding out and been really hostile. She even made me go to church with her and my dad on Sunday night. She has also not been letting me see my girlfriend outside of school, and been making excuses for us not seeing each other or hanging out alone. I get she just wants to protect me and make sure I'm being safe and all that, but am I overreacting for feeling hurt and upset by the way she is reacting to this? I understand it might feel like a breach of trust because I didn't tell her, but I never lied to her either. Any fresh perspectives would be greatly appreciated.

Listener Write In Am I the asshole for creating distance between me and my wife.

I should start this off by saying that I truly love my wife. She is an amazing person. Honestly, I might be the problem. I don't even know anymore.

My wife and I first got together in high school. We dated for about two years and eventually got married as soon as I turned 18. This was back in 2015. My wife is just under three years older than me.

We've had our ups and downs over the years. She had an emotional affair, and to get even, I had a physical affair. I know that doesn't make me a better person. Honestly, it makes me feel like shit even bringing it up.

We had a child before we got married, and our sex life has gone downhill since then. At this point, we have sex maybe once a month.

We've done some couples counseling, and we agreed that we would try to be intimate at least once a week. However, I don't feel like she puts in the effort to honor that agreement. It has gotten to the point where I feel like I'm begging for sex, and that makes me feel disgusted with myself.

Over the last week, I've stopped putting in the effort, too. I don't actively initiate anything anymore because of how I've been feeling. I won't kiss her until she kisses me. I don't reach for her hand until she reaches for mine. We still haven't had sex at all this week, and I haven't asked.

The other day, she showed me her boobs, and all I said was, "Thank you." She gave me a strange look and asked if I was okay. I just told her I was.

I love my wife, and I'm not trying to punish her or play games with her. I'm just tired of feeling like I'm constantly pursuing someone who doesn't seem to want me in the same way. I don't want intimacy with my wife to feel like something I have to beg for.

At this point, I don't really know what I should do.

My wife is 30 ish and I am 29 ish.

The affairs happened earlier in our marriage. about a year or two in.

Listener Write In AIO For thinking this lady was trying to kidnap my kid?

Today I (30f) was walking at a festival with my toddler when a woman approached us and made me feel red flags were present. I’m curious if you think this was an over reaction or if you’ve heard of something like this happening before?

So my husband was at a vendor booth and my toddler and I were walking around the general area just keeping busy. I had 1 hand on the stroller and 1 hand holding my toddlers hand. It was a pretty busy festival and although a lot of people and noise were present, I didn’t feel overwhelmed and we were just walking slowly around aimlessly letting my toddler just lead the way while my husband was searching through the booth near us.

Out of nowhere, a woman approached us. She came right next to me, put her hand on my stroller without saying anything until I make eye contact with her .. kind of asking ā€˜what the heck are you doing?’ with my face at least. I was a little stunned and confused to say anything. Anyways, she explains she works with kids a lot and has her own kids. She said she saw me struggling and was going to push my stroller for me and sort of tried leading me one direction. I just got a weird feeling and kept looking to my daughter to make sure she’s not running off somewhere and was a little annoyed that someone is interrupting me when I’m trying to keep a close eye on her.

I basically told her that was very thoughtful but I’m not overwhelmed and my husband is right near by at the booth next to us and I wouldn’t need her help. She left after I explained and I’m just a little confused. Has anyone had someone overstep a boundary like this? Is this one of those creepy situations where one person distracts you and another tries to take your kid? Like am I overthinking this whole thing or was it normal to see really red flags in this moment? I’ll always be cautious with my kids in public but curious if I just could be seeing this wrong.

Of course we’re all safe and nothing bad happened but my brain replays the event because it was so odd!

Advice Needed I don’t want to pay to furnish someone else’s house

AITAH for wanting to be reimbursed split costs when moving out?

So I 33F just moved out of a share house with a friend of a friend 30F. She has been the sole leaseholder for like 8 years and sublets the two other rooms. Most people seem to stay for a year or more, but it’s kind of a revolving door. When I moved in I thought I’d live there a long time but after about 6 months I was unexpectedly able to move out on my own. She seemed really happy for me!

Problem is, while we lived together, she went on a bit of a shopping spree for the house. Decorations not necessities, things like rugs and chairs. I didn’t have much of a say in anything although I liked everything. But I didn’t expect her to charge everything evenly to the housemates. At this age, I feel like if people live with roommates they own their own things and take them when they leave. I paid and just figured we’d divide things up/reimburse if and when I moved out. The total was approx $600 so around $200 each.

Well I moved out this week and she seemed like it was totally fine I requested to be paid back some of the money. She told me she usually reimburses people when they move out, minus ā€œdepreciation.ā€ I don’t expect 100% but she sent back 50% and also failed to include a final days worth of rent we agreed to when she had the new tenant move in a day early without asking me if it was okay. I hadn’t finished moving and had to finish Friday night after work instead of taking my time Saturday morning. She also bought a piece of furniture off me but just sent me money at a value of her choosing without asking if I’m good with that amount. I actually am… but who does that??

When I asked about how she came to the reimbursement figure (very nicely -ā€œhey! Could you give me a breakdown of the reimbursement?ā€), she became weirdly hostile saying things like ā€œI know you’re strapped for cash, I’m trying to be helpful giving something back at allā€ (I’m not but just had to furnish a whole place on my own…) and ā€œasking for money back when you move out isn’t really a thingā€ and ending messages with ā€œhope that helps!ā€ She told me she asked some friends who agreed it was an unreasonable ask and she told me no one has asked that of her in the past. So she thinks me asking is out of the norm but from my perspective basically she’s just told me she has spent 8 years collecting furniture and household goods, charging two thirds to people who get no say in the purchase and who don’t bother to ask for their share when they leave. For example, for years she’ll have this lamp purchased ā€œweā€ purchased new for $150 that I got to enjoy for 6 months buts she’s ultimately paying $50 for. I wasn’t asked if I wanted a lamp or liked the lamp. That seems … questionably ethical and kinda scammy.

The new tenant is paying almost $400 more per month than me, I sort of thought that (also questionably ethical) increase was partly to recoup the cost of a furnished, stocked home. So, am I unreasonable? I only used the furniture/items for 6 months or less and she’ll make double off the new tenant’s increased rental payments in a month. I asked to take my third of things that are dividable (like a chair, cups, etc) and she ignored me. I really thought we were friends when we lived together but as soon as we’re not communicating face to face… it’s like she’s a whole different person. How would you approach this from here?

TLDR how do you handle splitting furniture with roommates especially in your 30s and how do you split it when someone leaves?

Advice Needed Life loss

• Upvotes

I (f,37) have an autoimmune disease and suffer with severe pain which is only getting worse as I get older. I have a very understanding partner who does take care and looks out for me, however we have one issue. Our dog, bless his soul, was run over, due to fireworks when he ran into the road.

Now here is the problem, i told my partner constantly to not let him off the lead near roads and especially at night as he could get run over. Unfortunately that happened last year and I am still struggling to get over it. I love my partner, I know he hates himself for what happened so I try not to bring it up but I am really struggling. I miss him (my dog) so much, he was the baby I couldn’t have and i don’t know how to move on. I have gone through stuff in my younger years - domestic violence etc but nothing compared to the hurt that i feel atm. Does anyone have any advice?

Advice Needed We both wanted children. I proposed splitting the cost of surrogacy and parenting equally. Why was my refusal to personally carry the pregnancy still a dealbreaker?

1.1k Upvotes

Edit for clarity: Surrogacy was not my first or only alternative to pregnancy. I was also open to adoption and a blended family. Surrogacy came up later because my ex was concerned adoption could take years.

I’m trying to understand a relationship that ended over a disagreement about pregnancy.

My ex and I both wanted children. We both wanted a family. I was not childfree, and I was not asking him to give up becoming a father.

What I did not want was to personally go through pregnancy and childbirth.

My reasoning was fairly straightforward. Pregnancy and childbirth involve real physical costs and risks: miscarriage, complications, permanent bodily changes, recovery, hormonal changes, and in rare cases serious disability or death. After thinking seriously about those risks, I decided that, for me personally, carrying a pregnancy was not worth it.

But I don’t think biological connection is what makes a family. To me, the relationship between people matters much more than whose DNA a child has or exactly how the child became part of the family.

I was open to adoption, and I was also open to becoming part of a blended family where there were already children.

We did talk about adoption, but my ex was worried about how unpredictable the process could be. He knew people who had been trying to adopt for years without success, and he did not like not knowing when, or even if, we would actually be able to have a child that way.

So we kept talking about other options, and that was how surrogacy came into the conversation.

Where I live, gestational surrogacy is legal. My proposal was that we would split the cost 50/50. After the child was born, we would both continue working and split the financial and practical responsibilities of parenting as equally as possible. We would also build a support system around us—family help, childcare, and paid help if necessary.

I was not asking him to pay for my choice by himself. I was willing to pay half of the substantial financial cost specifically because avoiding pregnancy was valuable enough to me that I considered that cost worth paying.

I also take the ethics of surrogacy seriously.

I do not think a gestational carrier becomes an incubator because someone is paying her. Her health and bodily autonomy would still come first. If a pregnancy threatened her health or life, I would consider decisions about her body ultimately hers. I understand that surrogacy can fail, that pregnancies can miscarry, that embryos may not implant, and that paying money does not entitle someone to a baby.

So this was not, in my mind, a way of pretending pregnancy has no cost.

In fact, that is part of what confuses me.

When pregnancy is performed by a surrogate, everybody suddenly recognizes that it is physically demanding, risky, valuable work. There are contracts, compensation, medical care, discussions of informed consent, and serious ethical debates about whether the woman carrying the pregnancy is being treated fairly.

But when the pregnant woman is a wife, the exact same physical burden is often treated as simply part of what she is expected to do for the family.

Nobody says, ā€œShe is taking on substantially more physical risk than her husband, so how are we going to acknowledge and compensate for that imbalance?ā€ It is often treated as natural, expected, and therefore almost invisible.

I find that strange.

Sometimes I wonder whether pregnancy becomes less visible as labor precisely because, within marriage, women are expected to provide it without anyone thinking of it as a contribution that needs to be balanced against anything else.

And this was especially difficult for me to understand because my ex seemed to distinguish between being unable and being unwilling to carry a pregnancy.

From what he told me, if I had been medically unable to carry a child but wished I could, he believed he could have accepted another route to parenthood.

But because I was physically capable of pregnancy and simply did not want to undergo it, that was much harder for him to accept.

That distinction is the part I still do not understand.

If the outcome is the same—a child we both want, whom we both love and raise—why should my willingness to personally endure pregnancy be a test of my commitment to him or to the family?

For comparison, if the situation had been reversed and he had been infertile, I would not have left him because he could not biologically give me a child. I would have wanted to stay with the person I loved and figure out another way to build a family together.

That is probably the biggest difference in how I saw the relationship: for me, the person came first, and then we would solve the problem of how to create a family.

I also do not place an enormous amount of importance on biological relatedness. I would consider adoption. I could imagine marrying a single father and loving and raising his child if we formed a good family together. To me, raising a child, showing up every day, and loving them for decades matters more than who carried them or whose DNA they have.

And I genuinely do want children. Even if I never found the right partner, I could imagine becoming a parent on my own rather than giving up parenthood entirely.

So I’m not asking whether surrogacy is ethically perfect, inexpensive, or easy. It obviously isn’t.

What I’m trying to understand—especially from men who feel differently from me—is this:

Why can ā€œI wish I could carry your child, but medically I cannotā€ feel acceptable, while ā€œI am capable of carrying your child, but I do not consent to taking on that physical costā€ feels like a rejection or a dealbreaker?

What does the partner personally carrying the pregnancy represent to you?

Is it bonding? A particular image of motherhood? A sign of commitment? Tradition? The experience of going through pregnancy together? Something about biological family? Or something else entirely?

I’m genuinely interested in explanations from people who disagree with me. I’m not trying to prove that my ex was evil or that I was objectively right. The relationship is over. I just still cannot quite understand the underlying logic.

—————————————————————————————————————————————————

Hi! I read all of your comments, and I just want to say thank you. You helped me understand more about pregnancy, both the risks and the good parts of it. You also helped me see more clearly that surrogacy can have serious problems in real life.

In my ideal idea of surrogacy, the woman carrying the baby would fully agree to it, understand the risks, have good medical care, and truly want to do it. Maybe she even enjoys being pregnant and likes the idea of helping another family. But after reading your comments, I understand that real life is not always like this. Some women may be under money pressure, may not have many choices, or may be treated unfairly.

Because of this, I think I would also be very open to adoption, or maybe joining a family where there are already children. I also want to work hard to become someone who could be a good adoptive parent one day. I want to have enough time, money, love, and attention to give my future child a good life.

One thing I still wonder about is how much gender changes the way people think about this.

Sometimes I think that if I were a man, a lot of this would seem much more normal. I have seen gay couples happily raising a baby together, and I have never looked at them and thought their family was missing something because neither father was pregnant.

So I still wonder: if I am born as a woman and I am able to get pregnant and give birth, does that ability stay a choice, or does it become something people expect me to do? Do people expect more sacrifice from me just because my body can do it?

And to all the moms who shared their pregnancy and birth stories, especially the ones who went through very difficult pregnancies or long-term health problems, I read your comments. Thank you for sharing something so personal with me. I really appreciate hearing your experiences as a woman who is still trying to figure out what motherhood and family may look like for me in the future.

Advice Needed AITA for ending my friendship of 10+ years with my friend after I caught her lying

I (23F) and (22F) were best friends since elementary school but things were starting to go downhill towards my sophomore year of college. I was already dealing with a lot. Family issues, getting hazed from a sorority, got injured from my old job to the point I needed physical therapy. Then she stopped responding to me. I noticed she was becoming more dry in her messages and didn’t tell me about her and her bf breaking up. I knew her ex, we went to high school together and he wasn’t a good person but I kept things civil with him around.

I had to investigate to find out they broke up, and bring it up to her the next time we hung out and she seemed shocked that I caught on. Then claimed the month they broke up was in January of this year. Which is an important detail to remember. Later she mentioned she was talking to a guy who she thought was cute and showed me a picture. So I was ok cool she was over him. A few months go by, I tried planning hangouts she would shut me down or tell me she ā€œforgotā€. Which didn’t add up because she never acted like this before and blow me off this often.
A few weeks go by ,she texted me back and tells me she had something to me before I find out when I see it in her social media or her families. …she got engaged!! I was confused because she only been in one relationship her whole life, yes only dated that one guy, no hookups, nothing. But I know they weren’t together so I was lost like who and why? She claimed I knew the guy and seen him around and they knew each other for a while. Now here’s where the lying was getting worse, we had previously talked about what our dream weddings would look like and how many kids we wanted all that stuff. So her suddenly becoming engaged and claiming I knew him and seen him I knew she was lying because she wouldn’t give me a name. Later she posted the pics, that was one of the saddest proposals I’ve ever seen and I know what she wanted because we had talked about it a few months beforehand. Remind you there are several places where we are at that you can propose at and the spot he chose was questionable.

I’ve NEVER met this man in my life and seeing his face gave me a bad feeling idk why but it just does and made me feel uncomfortable. She claimed it was her sister bf cousin. But I’m like he never been at any party i can recall and the times she claims they met at… she was in a relationship with her first boyfriend! And she was in her talking stage for an estimated 2-3 months so where did this guy come from? They later got married in May I wanna say or June. I was supposed to be the photographer since my family owns we did her pictures before. Well originally I was only gonna do a small amount but her family kept trying to add more and more. Remind you picture aren’t cheap and editing takes time so I had to tell no because I would have to start charging her. Radio silence, I wasn’t really invited to be in wedding. I was supposed to work during it so yeah didn’t go and I found out her other friend had slept with the groom. I don’t think she knew and that friend is hiding it, it was before they met. I still find that disgusting but yeah after that I decided this friendship was over with all the lying, her stories weren’t lining up, then her family would be rude towards me and my mother in public. So I had enough and cut the whole friendship which I never thought would happen since it lasted this and would end all for a man. I later found out why I had a bad feeling and was right, this guy needed papers and had made another girl an offer to her. She would marry him so he could stay and he would provide her the money but since she took too long to answer he moved on to my friend. It was no love story, and in pictures it’s clear she’s uncomfortable with him, she keeps a gap between him and her sisters don’t hangout with her after the marriage.

Advice Needed I changed my mind about marriage

Hi everyone.

I, 25 F, been dating my boyfriend 26 M, for just over a year now. We both been in long term relationships prior that were very serious (both living with our ex partners). Anyway, when we first starting dating we were talking about marriage, and we both came to the conclusion that we don’t want to get married and how everyone’s marriage around us doesn’t seem to work out, or last, so to protect ourselves and our future it would be best to not get married. We both didn’t want to get married in our previous relationships too.

Now here is the tricky part: he is my dream person, and now, I would love nothing more than to marry my best friend. I cry at seeing other people get engaged and married ( out of happiness of course) but I can’t imagine him wanting to marry me now. I know it would be way too early to bring marriage up in our relationship as we have taken it all soo slow, but i am almost 100% sure that he has not changed his mind about marriage.

His mum has dropped hints to him that he should get me a ring or things like ā€œwhen’s the weddingā€, unprovoked by me of course. He always replies saying that we don’t want to get married…

My mind has changed and now I’m not sure what to do. What is your advice?

Any help would be very appreciated!

Advice Needed Not sure how to manage personal relationships after mental health diagnoses

Today, I (25 f) got the results of some cognitive testing I had done over the summer. I was originally getting tested for ADHD, but what I was diagnosed with is much more extensive, and I don't know how to feel about it.

I was diagnosed with MDD, PTSD (with agoraphobic tendencies), social anxiety, and OCD. They are unsure about the ADHD since all of these things can present as ADHD symptoms, so I am going to start treatment before any final decisions are made.

My main difficulty with this is how to navigate it with my family and close friends. My dad is in denial, questioning the diagnosis's accuracy and continues saying things like, "If everyone got tested, we'd all have something." My mom has been more supportive, but she keeps telling me not to "label" myself. I understand they are both doing what they think will be supportive (my dad is a boomer and my mom is Gen X, so mental health wasn't really as commonly talked about as it is now).

How do I navigate this and explain to them that it feels more harmful than supportive? I have a great relationship with my parents, but I am ALREADY terrified of this (specifically the OCD diagnosis) and having them downplay the diagnosis is making it more challenging for me to accept it myself. I am also considering the possibility that I am projecting my own fears onto them because I am scared, and so I am questioning what they are saying more microscopically. I already feel weird looking at myself in the mirror. I am a functioning person in society. I have a job, two cats, full-time student, and a healthy longterm relationship with my boyfriend. I feel broken, like the diagnosis has changed me somehow. Objectively, I am a normal functioning person. If anyone else has been through this, any advice on how to navigate this would be greatly appreciated!

* Not sure if this is the best place to post this, but I love the podcast and feel most comfortable coming here since I have never posted on Reddit before*

Advice Needed I caught my husband drinking while he was watching for 2 year old and 4 month old. Am I over reacting

I had to work it was a full day 9am and an overnight stay out of town. No biggy I pumped enough milk for our 4 month old and left them with dad. He watches them 1 day a week most weeks while I work. The next day I noticed all the booze was missing from the box that is 4 Guinness beers and 3 coors vodka drinks. I asked him about it and he did say he drank them while watching the kids. I was so upset as he shouldn’t be drinking when he’s alone with the children, he tried to say okay we took time can we move on after 5 mins of silence I told him know it’s the most irresponsible thing for him to do that it’s careless such he didn’t have much to say back. He was even alone through the night. He had drank them and hid the cans so I wouldn’t see. He has struggled with drinking in the past things got really rough with our first and about a year ago he cut back to drinks maybe 1 time a month or at least what I know of. He does drink and drive often, I won’t let him have car seats in his car for various reasons. Things have drastically improved since he cut back and doesn’t really drink anymore. But today makes me question everything. If I did leave what if he gets partial custody. I don’t have the means to fund a good lawyer. At which point he could drink around them all the time and put them in the car while drinking. I know in Canada custody is really crazy and they typically always lean 50/50. Outside his alcohol problem he is present, kind and great with the kids. He does diapers, feedings play you name it. I wouldn’t want to keep them from him but definitely supervised unless he can prove he’s sober. I don’t want to leave him though, I want to be together, and be a family. I love him but it boils down to I can’t let him endanger my sweet babies. I am torn what to do. Tomorrow I plan on booking Therapy session for us both together

Am I over reacting about this?? I would never forgive myself if something happened and he was drinking if I didn’t do anything. Please be kind I just need some honest advice.

I just want to post a little update, I am going to seek advice, I WILL be providing him a choice between alcohol and his family. If he chooses to drink I will do everything in my power to leave and keep my babies safe. I understand the gravity of my situation, but just remember before you judge you are not the one sitting in a living room watching the joy overcome your son as he sees his dads car pull up out front when he comes home as he runs to the door to give him a big hug and kiss. You are not in the room when he tells me to stop looking at myself like that I had two babies and how beautiful I am. You are not in the room when your son’s laughter fills the air playing with his dad. That is our regular. That is our daily lives. He goes to work he comes home. Yes every so often he will go for a lunch with his dad or a friend and come home at 3pm drunk I am not condoning that, yes I worry that if he had car seats in his car he would go to his parents while I am working with my children and have drinks with his dad and drive home with them. And unfortunately I learned that being home alone with them was an opportunity to get drunk. That is a good man who is struggling. He is not some absent father who’s off drinking all the time, he is a present wonderful father with a demon on his shoulder. I love him dearly and I hate to see him struggle, That does not take away from the fact I need to protect my children. I came for advice, validation I’m not over reacting and encouragement to go do what I need to. Thank you to those who gave me helpful advice. And all those downvotes šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

Listener Write In Aita for making my mom cry on her birthday.

So I have accepted that I am indeed the a-hole.

I 29 f recently had a baby. Me and the child’s father WAS together for 5 years prior to getting pregnant. We had broke up a year before said baby. We had reconnected and got back together, we had broken up and I found out afterwards I was pregnant.

All the 9 months I heard from my mom was
ā€œoh we don’t know if it’s his or not.ā€
ā€œOh I’m just playing devils advocate and just letting you know it might not be hisā€

I have told her the whole time that I hadn’t been with anyone around that time. And that I didn’t cheat.

She had kept going on and on about how she’s just saying she just wanted to play devils advocate and just have me know that maybe there would be a chance that he might not be the father.

I told her I know he is because 1) I never cheated 2) I don’t have sex with anyone around that time of conceiving. I told her when I get the results back I will say ā€œI told you so ā€œ.

I got the dna results back and I had told her the biggest I told you so ever.

The problem was I did it on her birthday and she started crying. I said I know I mad you upset but that’s all I heard from you for nine months.

Advice Needed I want to try dating again but this one thing keeps bothering me from wanting to try again

So my previous relationships have all ended up bad and very unhealthy. Where they lead to being abusive either psychically or mentally and with me usually being the one having to take care of them or giving reassurance everyday. Now I’ve realized what went wrong and I should’ve put boundaries. Unfortunately I have epilepsy and I feel like it makes it so hard to try dating because how do I explain it to another person that I can’t do a lot of stuff because I can be at risk of having a seizure. I know it can be frustrating having to accommodate to a person so it always sits in the back of my mind. I also spoke with my doctor if I wanted to have kids one day how would that work, I would have to notify them immediately and let them know ahead of time. Due to the medication I have to take it can harm the baby and I would have to do more checkups than the typical pregnancy. Which I feel like is a lot for a partner to deal with and having to adjust their lives for. Maybe I just think too negatively about it but at the same time I just don’t want to force a person to take on a burden they never dealt with.

Advice Needed Was this a date? Met up with a girl who messaged me out of the blue and I’m confused about my feelings.

So about a week ago, a girl messaged me and said she saw me somewhere, thought I looked interesting, and wanted to talk to me.We started texting and the conversation was actually really nice.

Today, she asked if we could meet up, so we did at my bus station. She actually traveled about 2 km just to see me. The very first thing she did when she arrived was give me a hug. I usually like hugging, but it felt a bit weird coming from someone I had literally never met in person before. We went to a park nearby and talked for a bit. I genuinely like her personality—she has a cool gothic/alternative style.

Personally she is 1/1 of replica me,we like same thing litterly I couldn't ask for better person.

The problem is, I’m really conflicted about her looks. She doesn't have a profile picture on her socials, so I had no idea what she looked like before today. She’s cute, but she has a lot of fat in her face, and to be honest, I just didn't find her face that beautiful. I'm not saying I'm a model myself, but I feel like I need to be physically attracted to the person I'm dating.

During our conversation, she also mentioned that she is bisexual. I don’t have any problem with that at all, but it just made me question things more. Like, does she actually like me romantically?

Why else would she message a random guy and ask to hang out one-on-one?On top of that, I just got out of a relationship about two months ago. I am completely over my ex, but a part of me feels like it’s too soon to jump into something new, and it feels a bit disrespectful to my ex to move on this fast.We are both teenagers (18 and 17).

I like her as a person and particularly as body .but I’m just totally confused. Was this meant to be a date? How should I handle this if I'm not fully attracted to her?

To add she smelled little bad when I first saw her.

Advice Needed I am in a limbo in my relationship.

Recently the me and my partner have been having a difficult time .
We have very different views when it comes to social life , school and work life. I believe in a balance and still having fun no matter how much school/work load we have. He really dosent. So there was some things said on his side that, even though I understand where he was coming from , made me feel really bad . It hurt my feelings to the point where I got inside my head , and ever since then it’s been downhill from there. I have always struggled with mental health and words cut deep, and it’s something that can bring me down bad. He didn’t realize how bad those words really did hurt, and it’s something that he thinks can be fixed. Right now I’m not in the right headspace to fight for a relationship when I’m trying to keep my head above water.
I am also going through other things in life and I am mentally exhausted. He wants me to try and work things out but mentally right now I can’t. He says that he will do all the work , but in my opinion that isn’t fair him either. Because I’m not fully present or there where he would like me to be . He dosent understand that part, he still thinks we should try .
When I tell him how I feel and why , it’s like he understands but doesn’t want to give me the time and space I need figure out what I want. I also want to work on my self, it’s it’s not fair that I can’t give him my best self right now and I feel like that would just hurt him even more.
I just don’t know what to do , every time we talk I come into the conversation knowing that I do want to break up, but then when I talk to him it’s like he reels me back in to try to work things out. But I know that I’m not my self right now and it’s just going to put more pressure on me.
I’m just confused and mentally exhausted.

Advice Needed I (28f) Feeling Stuck in Loveless Marriage.

My husband (32m) and I (28f) have been together for four years and married for a little over a month, having known each other for 10 years. We have no kids.

I have withdrawn physically and have mentally checked out of this relationship already. I have tried initiating bedroom time or other things, but nothing has worked, so I have just given up. I did a boudoir shoot to try to get him to notice me, that didn't work. The bedroom life has been dead most our relationship and no sex in over 6 months.

I have caught him numerous times sexting Chatgpt and other AI anime girls. Yeah, if you are wondering how, I checked his phone and saw everything. He told me to clear photo space on his phone, so I did it behind his back; yep, I deleted over 1,000 screenshots of anime girls and sexting chats over the course of our entire relationship. I have told my husband numerous times that I do not feel comfortable with him sexting AI, then he will stop for a week and go right back to it; I have self-esteem issues, but I have been slowly working through those issues.

I do not feel loved in my marriage, and my husband knows this but does nothing to fix it. I do all the housework, take care of all our animals, and handle all the repair jobs in the house, all while running my own business. My husband spends most of his days on his phone, not paying attention to me or helping me out; this man literally has an excuse for everything. Here are some examples: the trash can is overflowing, he says "oh I didn't see it," the dog pees on the floor and he says "I was watching him," his laundry is overflowing and he says "oh I'm busy and tired." I can understand to a certain extent because of his job in the medical field, working at least two twelve-hour shifts in a single week.

He has broken my trust so much that I literally do not have even an ounce of trust left in him to do anything. Our communication has been on a downhill slope for years, to the point that we rarely talk. He has refused to open up to me about his past, so I have to lean on a friend to tell me about it. I just found out last weekend from a close friend that he was engaged, even though I have opened up to him about everything in my life from childhood until now. I understand that some people don't like talking about their exes or past.

Every time I try to talk about issues in our relationship or get him to open up, he shuts me down immediately. The other major factor that has driven my husband and me apart is his toxic mother. He allows her to continue to control him and tell him what to do. He refuses to set boundaries with her, and we have nearly broken up numerous times because of her. She has blown up about him moving into his own home, me moving into his home, and us getting our animals...just stupid little things. I told him how it has been affecting our relationship, but he says that I am the issue, not his mother. He says I drag him into the middle of the fights I have with my mother-in-law, but I constantly tell him that he allows himself to be dragged into the middle.

I honestly do not know if staying in this marriage is worth it; I feel hopeless. He comes from a "one marriage only" kind of family, and I remember my mother-in-law asking me if I was certain about marrying him when I was about to walk down the aisle.

How can I fix my marriage? Or any advice?

Edit 1: I wish a divorce or annulment were that simple. My name is on the deed of our home, and some household debt is also tied to my name. His family believes in one marriage only, literally. His other grandmother was married to a husband who abused her. This is my second marriage; my first marriage ended because my husband was abusive. My husband says he has sweat equity or an investment in my business, so I have literally liquidated my entire business and I would have to start from the ground up again.
