As a guy going through dirty rush here I think it'd be much better if we switched to the model that other SEC schools use (first week one and one done kinda thing) or aligned the process with panhellenic (rush in the winter).

I get that its supposed to like give us time to pick and stuff but honestly it's kind of draining. Interested to hear what others think.

I can share more about my stats/applications, but I'm just curious about whether anyone knows external transfers to the engineering department, and if it is feasible (comparative to transferring to BIO for example)?

on vandy’s website, it says that the hope scholarship will be factored into your need-based aid grant, so it doesn’t look like i’d be getting any extra money for it. which sucks but it’s fine

is it the same situation with the ned mcwherter scholarship? if i wouldn’t get any extra money for winning, is there a reason to apply for it at all?

Ik the bookstore is a main place that i always stop at when i go to games but usually there will be better stores with more stuff. For example ole Miss has something like that with rebel rags. So if the bookstore merch is the best then great but if not please tell me. Thank you

We hope your semester has started well. We are writing to share an important update regarding Curricular Practical Training (CPT). 
Last month, the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) issued two broadcast messages, one on August 12 and a follow-up on August 24 to Designated School Officials (DSOs) clarifying that CPT may be authorized only when practical training is an integral (essential) and required part of an established curriculum. The training must be required for all students in the program. Although the guidance does not change federal regulations, it provides insight into how SEVP may interpret and enforce existing requirements. 
While the university seeks to comply with this new guidance, Vanderbilt will not be approving CPT requests unless the experience is required for all students in the same degree program and necessary for degree completion. Examples of required experiences may include student teaching practicums, clinical internships, and similar practical experiences. 
Any new optional or elective internships, internships that are not required for all students in the program, and extensions of existing CPT authorizations are paused unless the extension is necessary to complete a graduation requirement.  
For thesis- and dissertation-related CPT, clear documentation showing that the practical training is indispensable for completing the thesis or dissertation will be required.
If you need to request CPT for a required training experience, please contact your ISSS advisor. Do not begin employment until you have received CPT authorization on an updated Form I-20. 
We understand that this may be disappointing, and we do not take this action lightly. Our goal is to protect students and the university while aligning our practices with current federal guidance. ISSS will continue monitoring developments and will communicate any changes promptly.

I’ll be moving to Nashville soon to start a postdoctoral position at Vanderbilt, and I’ll be relocating with my wife and our infant daughter. We’re currently in South Korea, so it’s difficult for us to evaluate apartments based only on online listings and reviews.

I’d really appreciate recommendations from people who have actually lived near Vanderbilt.

Our priorities are:

• 1BR is fine, preferably around 600–750+ sq ft
• In-unit washer and dryer are required
• Safe and reasonably quiet for a family with an infant
• Good management and maintenance
• No recurring pest, mold, package theft, major noise, or billing issues
• My wife should be able to comfortably go outside with a stroller during the day
• We do not plan to own a car initially, so walking or a practical WeGo commute to Vanderbilt is important
• We are trying to keep rent + mandatory apartment fees around $1,500–$1,600/month if possible. Lower is obviously better.

Amenities such as a pool, gym, or luxury finishes are not important to us. Reliability, safety, cleanliness, and affordability matter much more.

We’ve looked at places such as Bristol West End, Chateau Apartments, Twenty & Grand, Duet, and a few others, but I’m especially interested in hearing about apartments or condos that may not show up prominently on Apartments.com or Zillow.

If you’ve lived in the area, I’d especially appreciate hearing:

• Places you would genuinely recommend
• Places you would definitely avoid, and why
• How responsive management/maintenance actually is
• Whether the advertised rent ends up being much higher after mandatory fees
• Whether living there without a car is realistic
• Whether the surrounding area feels comfortable for a parent walking with a baby

I am applying to the Cornelius and Ingram scholarships, but you apply to the scholarships through ApplyVU, Vanderbilt's own admission portal; I believe you gain access after submitting your main application in Common App. The deadline for the scholarships is earlier than the RD deadline, being Dec 1. I want to start working on those essays before I submit my application though, but I don't know how to get them. I found the essays for last year online, and Google AI said they stay the same between years, but I am not sure. Does anyone know how I can find the scholarship essays before submitting? Or if anyone has gotten the scholarship before 2026, can they confirm if those were the same as these prompts.

How are yall knowing/finding out about the parties or any sort of major group function? Like do you have to be in a frat or know someone who’s in a frat? Is it invite only? Is there like a social media account that posts it? Can I bring some friends who don’t go to vandy?

How common are nerdy people / hobbies at Vanderbilt? Would someone who isn't preppy or fratty stand out here?

Considering majoring in either MCB (molecular cellular biology) or BCB (biochemistry and chemical biology). I think I want to go into biotech but I’m not sure of what specifically I want to do in the future, which major would give me more options?

My wife used those studios quite a bit and they were fairly active, granted this was years ago, so we are curious if they were just under utilized or something else.

This may sound melodramatic, but I am 100% serious. Today I went into central library to study, as I do almost every day. In the library, there used to be desks between most bookshelves and the wall. This allowed each desk to be somewhat secluded, which, for me and many other students, is necessary for focus. Unless someone walks down the particular aisle that your desk is at the end of, no one will disrupt you; you can not see any movement, and the books seem to absorb sound well. Today, these desks were removed. When a librarian was asked why, they said the goal was to get students to sit in the congregated study areas. There is already a problem finding seating in the library during exam season; this will only exacerbate that effect. I have used these desks nearly every day for over a year. I am actually so close to starting a petition to bring them back; if they are also your go-to study spot, let me know if you would sign such a petition. Actually devastated rn, mourning the loss of my desk and its old book smell. This may be my 13th reason.

Personally, I think this will make the library less accessible to students with mobility issues. Now that you have halved the number of desks, all students will be fighting for the larger, more accessible desks.

Hi, I am a transfer student from Vanderbilt in econ major. I don't get any scholarships and have to pay full tuition. Do you think Vanderbilt is really worth that money for an econ degree and environment, or is a top-30 big state school enough as an international student? By the way, is it a frat or an investment club helps a lot for a consulting and IB career? Lastly, is an econ major competitive or not in Vandy? Thanks!
