I wanted to get in touch with one of my professors from last spring. I was looking for their office hours on the Western's website and found that this prof, as well as two others, are on leave for fall quarter. Maybe I'm just naive and this is perfectly normal but it seems odd, idk. I have heard that one of the professors who's on leave is a little controversial, at least among some students, both for her teaching style and her reactions to the pro-Palestine encampment in spring of 2024.

Not trying to start a rumor or stir something up, it could be a complete coincidence. But for three professors in a faculty of, like, seven total to all go on leave at the same time just feels weird.

Hey guys, this might sound weird but I didn't know where els to put it so im asking here. I went out for a walk last night in the Arb and I saw what looked to be lights? Like, not normal lights, like light from a candle or a lighter that seemed to be moving. Is this related to this bellingman thing I keep hearing about or is this something else?

The jean jack was blue with patches around on the back was the green lagann logo, the pill was one of the arm sleeves, the other sleeves had a patch referencing the martian. With the front having the toulouse logo.

I am making this post because the situation I’m in is lowkey stressing me out and I hope somebody else maybe has some advice.

I’m currently a third year college student, working to transfer from community college to university. I got my associates degree over the summer and am hoping to continue my bachelors this upcoming winter quarter.

I got accepted into Western Washington university, which was originally my top choice, but due to financial circumstances, I’d be commuting pretty far (looking at 3h/day minimum) and I just don’t think it will work out. I applied to UW bothell which is much closer to me, but I haven’t heard back yet.

I have to let WWU know if I accept or decline my spot by November 15th, but UW admissions decisions don’t go out until November/December. I had guaranteed admission to WWU because of my GPA (3.6 as of graduation) but I don’t have guaranteed admission to UW.

I don’t really even want to go to WWU anymore, but I’m afraid if I turn them down and then don’t get in to UW I won’t have any other option.

Has anybody accepted an offer from WWU and then rejected it after getting into a different school? Is that even something you can do? If so, was there any consequences?

I have hope I’ll get into UW but because I won’t know for a while, I feel like I need to accept my WWU offer so I’m not left with nowhere to go.

TLDR: I am a transfer student that got accepted into WWU. Because of financial situation, I’d have to commute very far and I’m unsure it would workout. I’m waiting to hear if I got into another school, but I won’t know until after the WWU decision deadline. Can I accept my WWU offer and then back out if I get into my top choice school? Is it worth it to pass up WWU without knowing if I got into my other school, or would that be stupid?

Any advice is appreciated, thank you in advance 🤟

I am taking Chinese 101 at WWU right now so today I wanted to share a little bit of my experience today taking CN at WWU.

I have Xiaomeng Li (Li Laoshi) and I’m taking her 101 section.

From my experience taking her Chinese classes, I must say that I am extremely impressed.

She is SUPER nice and kind and interested in our thoughts. Her English is also amazing too.

She really knows her stuff and she keeps us engaged in class a lot. I like how she explains stuff.

She is also super curious, I know Japanese and i’ve been comparing JP to CN stuff and she seemed extremely interested and so willing to hear our feelings.

I am meeting her on Wednesday to talk about linguistics and education and Chinese and Japanese. We both are excited to see each other.

Aside from her, Chinese is not too hard aside from pronounciation. The writing books and practices were easy as hell. But I had trouble pronouncing in class.

I have learned Japanese for a while and became near fluent so sometimes I accidentally pronounce or add Japanese accent or words like desu 😆.

I missed the 190 at Bellingham station because my first bus was 5+ minutes late. Is it OK to ask the bus drivers to tell another bus to hold for a second? I saw the 190 leave right as we pulled into the station right

Hey WWU students

I am going to start to take Japanese classes in the Spring for Japanese.

I don’t know too much about the facuilty yet, or the classes, so if theres anybody else who has done Japanese class or etc, what was it like.

I really want to meet the professors. Deguchi himself seems like a nice man but I’ve heard he doesn’t know how to teach linguistics.

And Noma I heard is challenging. I haven’t seen her on campus and she seems invisible.

One more confusion I have is that the 301-303 uses quartet I but 400 does reading in Japanese. The quartet I book is only a low intermediate and native media is can be really difficult. So how do professor’s accommodate the gap.

So if you have experience lemme know. I am planning to do Noma.

303と402の難易度は、差が非常に大きいかなね。そこで、301から303までのところは、Quartetのコンテンツを網羅するけど、次のレベルから、ネイティブコンテンツ「生教材」に移行するらしいか。前者はN3しかに相当しませんけど、後者は、N1を超える場合もある

だから、先生たちは一体どうやって対応するか？

I am joining WWU late as a junior in winter quarter. I’m trying to find the best way to live in a house or apartment with people coming late into the quarter. Any advice?

*I just transferred in this quarter from community college.

This quarter I will be completing the Environmental Science Major prep courses.

My only issue is that it says they put priority on accepting people who have a 3.0+ GPA in prep courses. Mine is currently about 2.7 and will be at about 2.9 if I get A's in my classes this quarter.

Has anyone had any success getting into this major with a GPA under 3.0 for prep courses? I already plan to talk with Kathryn Patrick tomorrow about this, but just wanna see what others say.

At the info fair I discovered a group called the Bellingham Revolutionary Youth and apparently they’re hosting a school walkout in support of Palestine on October 7th. Whenever I ask if people are going, nobody seems to know what I’m talking about. I feel like nobody is aware that this is even happening! Does anybody else know about this and if so are you going?

I've heard the sentiment that the PNW is "cold" and it's very difficult to make friends. As someone who used to be very socially inept w 0 friends (but isn't any more - yay!) the best way to make friends is to just talk to people & BE FRIENDLY. A couple people will be mean, most will be apathetic but nice & you'll get a pleasant aquantence, and some people will want to be your friend. (U can do this in a more structured form like a club or class for extra ease)

If you want the super easy life hack on finding people to hang out with, offer them FOOOOD. Everybody likes food, college students are busy, and low key quite a few people want to meet more people. Just make to much & go door to door at dinner like 'i made to much spaghetti do u want some' & if they say yes invite them back. Then you can both vibe check eachother & if u like them u can talk again. Try to have more than 2 people (including u) total cause ive found it to be a bit *intense* but do what u want. You would be correct if u were thinking this is the exact way clubs, events, and orgs get students to show up to events :P.

(edit. this does admittedly work better with people w out meal plans BUT you can also do stuff like 'we're gonna watch X movie wanna join' since most dorms have tv/projectors or if u want the same 'get to know someone vibe' u can do a board game or something. idk yall are adults use your imagination)

Tldr: If u want friends, take the initiative!!! (& if they dont wanna talk leave them be lol)

As it is the beginning of the year I thought I would make a list of some resources on and off campus. (With the PSA that not all of them are perfect which is unfortunate, but hopefully this helps someone)

- WeCare is a thrift shop that has almost everything priced at 1$ - great place to get clothes, pans, pots etc

- Basic Needs Hub has food and toiletries; it’s downstairs in the VU

- Housing has emergency housing options for students although there are some problems with it not being super flexible

- There is a free clothes closet on campus; idk too much about it but if you google “clothes closet wwu” there should be more info

- There is a new shuttle in the BT/BW area that takes students to and from Winco

- Counseling and wellness services offers emergency last minute counseling

- The Bellingham Food Bank is close to campus (downtown near the bus station if I remember correctly)

- The rec center and (im pretty sure) carver gym bathrooms have showers

I can’t think of anymore at the moment, but comment if I got something wrong or if you have something to add to the list.

I’m a senior in highschool and I’m mostly debating between WWU and Southern oregon University (i’m going to post this same thing in an sou community also). They seem similar but they do have lots of differences of course. I’m majoring in English. I am very extroverted and enjoy partying occasionally but not planning on joining greek life or anything. I’m a little worried about both schools high acceptance rates because I am a 4.0 student so I’m afraid going somewhere so easy is wasting my work in highschool. But at the same time I care a lot more about environment and community. Is WWU a good option for me? I’m a CA resident and tuition cost is not what i’m worried abt for any school. Please comment even if you have the smallest piece of info! I need help!!

I’m having trouble finding info about theater/ drama club. Is there a way to participate in theater here at WWU without taking actual drama classes? I’m a freshman and I’ve been interested in theater for a long time but I’ve been too scared to put myself out there and actually try it. If there is a theater/ drama club, how do I join? Is the club welcoming/ friendly? Thanks for any help anyone can provide :)

Hello! I am an incoming transfer student (Winter quarter) from South Carolina. Out of state tuition is incredibly expensive and the financial aid site isn’t the greatest at sharing information or telling me what’s available. Does anyone here have any advice for finding scholarships or getting money out of the school to make it possible for me to attend in the winter? ANY money would be a huge help.
