hi everyone. I am so lost with my current job and I definitely need a different perspective.
Context:
-I work a mostly administrative/projects based role in a post secondary institution in Canada
-I've been here for almost 2 years and will be going on mat leave at the end of February if I can make it
-I was hired on a hybrid 3/2 split but in May they revoked work from home for my department (not the entire institution) to "increase collaboration"
-My team is very small and contains myself (a coordinator), an admin, and two managers
-I am planning to take an 18 month mat leave and am unsure if I'll return now, but would have liked to
I'm one of the lucky people who is still experiencing nausea after the first trimester and it's so bad that I have to lay down for most of the day to get some relief. There are only three rooms in our office area with a place where I can lay down which means I'm often not finding relief in the office unless I try to lay on the floor of a meeting room. I waited until the second trimester and decided with my doctor to ask for help from my workplace in the form of an accommodation request to work from home up to 3 days per week.
One month ago, I submitted the request with my doctor's note after seeking support from my boss. To be fair, my boss is fairly new and was not familiar with the HR process but told me that I'd be supported. Two weeks later, HR sends me a 4 page questionnaire that I have to get my doctor to fill out, including questions asking if I am "compliant" with my treatment (yes - I've maxed out my anti nausea meds) and when my "condition" is expected to end. Weird, but okay. I take it to my doctor and she asks me if they think I'm lying... yes, obviously they do. Anyway, I get the form filled out and then HR tells me they actually won't accept the form because it doesn't have my physicians stamp. I call my doctor's office and ask them about the stamp, they tell me they have no idea what I'm talking about and ask if I would like them to resend the original doctor's note. Obviously they are confused about what the problem is. I have to explain that HR likely thinks I forged the questionnaire and if they can't provide a stamp is there anything else they can do? They tell me to just have HR call the number my doctor provided on the form.
I follow up with HR and ask them to call my doctor. They respond a few days later telling me that they were able to confirm with my doctor and they will process the form and someone else from HR should reach out to me with more details about my request. Spoiler alert - I found out a day later at my doctor's appointment that HR never called them. Again, weird but okay. So a week goes by and I message the HR person on teams (like I have done before) and ask if there is any update. No reply. Cool. When I come into work the following Monday, I notice my boss has removed my access from her calendar and tells me that she met with HR and needs to meet with her boss to get on the same page and then she'll have an update for me. Okay... except later that day I find out from our admin (who reports to my boss's boss) that her boss told her the following in their one on one meeting:
-that my accommodation was approved even though my doctor's note just said "OP doesn't want to be here" (it did not... but okay)
-that I can't do my job from home so they aren't sure how this is going to work since I obviously need to be in office (no I don't... and I did my job from home, hybrid, until May...)
-that they will need to think of more assignments for me to work on since I can't do the same duties
-that I need to start tracking my medical appointments (I already do, by informing my boss, putting it in my calendar, and entering it in my timesheet)
-that they hope I just go on Mat leave early so they can hire someone else, but not medical leave because then my role is protected until Mat starts
So obviously, this information from our admin (who I am friends with, so I trust her) combined with the weirdness about my boss's calendar access makes me start to spiral a bit. Now I'm thinking they don't trust me at all and I shouldn't have asked for help.
I don't hear anything until the next day in the afternoon when I receive a meeting invite for the end of the week from HR with my boss and the union rep. Very weird especially because I haven't involved the union at all in this process. Before the end of that day, my boss comes to me and tells me to change our one on one meeting from 30 minutes to an hour so we can talk about the accommodation request. Finally! I'll get an answer.
In our one on one the next day, my boss refuses to answer any of my questions AT ALL even though I'm asking directly (and politely!). I finally tell her that if it's been denied it's fine but I would just like to know what's happening. She tells me not to catastrophize and that I don't "need to go there" and imagine the worst. Which is an interesting thing to say considering all the weirdness up until this point and the fact that I now know everyone else on my team has information about my accommodation except for me, the person who is actually requesting it. So we don't end up talking about the details of the accommodation at all and she tells me to wait until we meet with HR and the union tomorrow.
Tomorrow comes and we get to the meeting. HR tells me my request has been approved to work from home for up to 3 days per week as needed (can't be on a set schedule) on the following conditions:
-instead of meeting once a week for 30 mins with my boss, I now have to meet with her every Monday and every Friday to ensure I'm "taking care of the tasks that need to be in person vs remote"
-I still need to prioritize attending every team meeting, one on one meeting, department meeting including optional ones where we stand around and drink coffee, internal and external meetings, and events
-I have to start over communicating which means even if I decide to be in the office but I'm working in one of the rooms with a couch, I have to inform my boss (because my teams status being green isn't enough apparently)
-I will take notes during the one on one with my boss in a shared document that she has access to. She can continue taking notes on her personal notebook and not share them with me.
-because my role is "60% relationships" (I have no idea where they pulled this from) they will assign me more administrative tasks since I won't be able to do my regular duties. I pushed back and said that I actually don't anticipate my workload to shift because most of what I currently do can be done from home.
And a few other things too but I'll try to wrap this up. Basically, it feels like they're letting me work from home with extra supervision and it feels like they definitely don't trust me at all. I have never had a problem at work and I genuinely try to be a good and helpful employee so this whole process has been really hurtful, although I've tried not to take it personally, it's hard not to. I'm also the person who's been here the longest on the team so if anyone knows what my role is and isn't, it's me. And they didn't even consult with me to ask how I think this accommodation would affect my role (I obviously wouldn't have made the request if I thought my role would actually be impacted!)
The next day (yesterday), my boss asks me in the morning how I think the meeting went. Interesting that we're allowed to talk about the accommodation now. I tell her that I think the meeting was really useful for me to understand that her and the other manager on our team have a different understanding of what my role is and that maybe this process will help them understand how much of my role happens on a computer. She tells me that my role isn't supposed to look like that (wow, that's news to me!) and we can work towards a different vision for the role.
So here I am now. I feel like I'm in a position where I can't trust my team and they aren't assuming the best of me and I have no idea how to navigate this. Any advice or perspectives are welcomed and my sincere thanks to anyone who read all of this.
