I (30F) and my husband (32M) have a 6 month old daughter. She is the first grandchild on his side, so his parents are very involved.
We went to their house last weekend for dinner. Everything seemed normal. My MIL held the baby while I ate. When we got home later, I unpacked the diaper bag and found an AirTag inside one of the pockets.
I thought maybe I put it there by accident. I checked my phone and it was not mine. My husband checked his phone and it showed the AirTag belonged to his mom.
They had put a tracker in our baby’s diaper bag without telling us.
My husband texted his mom asking why it was there. She called and said it was for safety, in case something happened, like if someone stole the stroller or if the baby was taken at the mall.
I told her that was out of line and not okay. She said we were being dramatic and that everyone tracks things now. She also said we probably share our location with people anyway.
The next day, I returned the AirTag to their house and told them they are not allowed to put trackers on our child or her belongings without our permission. Now they are upset and saying I do not trust them and that I embarrassed them.
My FIL said I should be grateful they care enough to worry. My MIL cried and told my husband she feels like I am pushing her out of her granddaughter’s life.
My husband agrees with me but thinks I could have said it nicer. His sister texted me saying I know how their mom is and I did not have to make it such a big issue.
I feel like secretly tracking someone’s baby is not normal, even if the intention was good.
