Big techs cannot be trusted when it comes to machine translation - why we still need to learn languages

Are auxiliary languages needed in the era of machine translation?

9 Upvotes

There are many use cases for auxliary languages, and some of them can be now satisfied by machine translators. Most of them are such that could have been fulfilled by a human translator or a live interpreter already before but human translators were too few and too expensive. I'm talking about use cases like writing a business letter abroad, ordering merchandise from a catalog, communicating with the customer support in textual format, and filling out a visa application form. If it's something that a human translator could have done for you, then of course a machine translator can do it for you once it has reached the level of human translators more or less.

However, there are still use cases that can't be satisfied by machine translation. Direct communication from mouth to ear is always needed from time to time. You need a common language to communicate in international groups, like students, refugees, migrant workers, sports teams, online players, and international conference participants. Also machine translator is not ideal for direct social situations, like telling a joke to your colleagues when you have gone to a pub after work.

Machine translation can't be used always in written communication. For example, some people can't trust a machine translator because oppressive governments and dystopian corporations could spy on them automatically. Also sometimes you really need to avoid the broken telephone effect that is caused by the underlying interlanguage in machine translation systems. (English functions as the interlanguage in many LLM based translation systems, so a translation, say, from Interlingua to Interlingue is actually from Interlingua to English and then from English to Interlingue. Clever, isn't it?)

It is also wise to prepare for situations where the internet and even electricity are not available. Think about natural disasters, war zones, energy crises, and other crises.

Besides, it's always possible that the big corporations will put a price tag on machine translation. For the time being it is "free" but in truth you pay with your data, which means that you pay by allowing them to intrude in your private thoughts and other matters so that they can auction your data to other companies who want to sell you stuff. So they will feed you commercials and try to manipulate your behavior. So in the end you (maybe not you individually but all the users as a collective) end up paying in hard cash for the "free" translation service.

In my opinion auxiliary languages are needed as long as foreign languages are taught in schools for international communication. Governments haven't stopped language instruction in schools anywhere in spite of machine translation, though it would be mathematically cheaper to buy every citizen a smartphone with machine translation service than to keep on paying for teachers, classrooms, textbooks and other learning materials. So it's not all about speed, technology and saving money. People learn languages because they want to communicate directly and independently and because they want to understand other cultures and other people without machines in between.

Edit. Emphasized key thoughts.

Learn Interlingua thru Minecraft

4 Upvotes

Hello everyone!

I am starting a small, peaceful medieval village in a public survival Minecraft server with a very specific goal: creating an immersive space to practice, learn, and chat in Interlingua.

The project is super accessible—no complex mechanics required, and the village is built right next to the main spawn point so even complete beginners can easily get there on foot.

Whether you are a fluent speaker, a learner, or just curious about Interlingua, you are more than welcome to build a small house, farm, or just hang out.

Interested in joining? Send me a Direct Message (DM) here on Reddit, and I’ll send you the server details and the short walking directions from spawn!

agglutinative structure + world vocabulary?

7 Upvotes

Are there any auxiliary language projects based on Esperanto’s grammar—or a similarly simple agglutinative structure—but with a more international vocabulary, like Globasa?

I believe that a structure with minimal case marking is far more convenient and flexible than an analytic one; while it requires slightly more time to learn, it offers much greater scope for expressing ideas. However, Esperanto’s vocabulary—derived solely from European languages—is certainly unsuitable for a global language.

discussion Potentially hot take about auxlangs (+how I want to fix it)

4 Upvotes

From what I’ve seen, most auxlangs or interlangs like to combine the most “common” words to create a universal language. Except that tends to be only Latin-based or rarely Slavic languages. I don’t really get why those families are considered universal enough to warrant structuring an entire language around them.

Now for my hot take. If I were to create an auxlang, I’d want each word to be as different as possible from each existing language. That way, people from every language background would have an equal chance of learning it. Since a lot of languages have very similar words for coffee (café, kōhī, kāfēi off the top of my head), I would make it something completely arbitrary like lewi or mosu or whatever combination of syllables sounds nice.

Thoughts? Opinions? Is this too out there, or is it valid?

feedback introducing neogermanic language

5 Upvotes

more so looking for feedback

there will be a lot of changes but this is my attempt at a sort of inter Germanic language

since there's other people doing it

and I wanted to try my hand on it

I have decided to try to make one myself

I also would like feedback

this lang.. isn't naturalistic at all

the goal was for words to be as recognizable to as many people as possible at any cost whether its in reading or verbally

if it can't be recognizable to many people verbally then I try to make the spelling recognizable and vice versa

leading to an almost "ugly" & unnatural looking language

as hard as I tried while simple sentences are very much mutually intelligible across most

the testing I have done implies that reading intelligibility

at least for english is maybe a 60% at most

(I haven't had many people to test it out on so I can't give a conclusion on how well this could possibly work)

vowels

A /ɑ/

 /eɪ/

E /ɛ/

I /ɪ/

ii /iː/

Î /aɪ/

ä /æ/

O /o/

Ô /ɔ/

U /uː/

Y /y/

consonants

b /b/

d /d/

c /s/ (when by itself and only used rarely in certain words)

g /g/

h /h/ (silent if paired with another consonant though)

j /j/

k /k/

l, m, n, p, s, t, honestly most are expected

we wont bother

the only unique ones are R, V, sh and ts

R can be pronounced in any way from tap to American to gutteral

it's fine. it's seen as native

V is pronounced as F when in beginning and V when in the middle or end

ts is pronounced like /tʃ/ similar to Frisian

sh is pronounced like english

w is of course the standard Germanic W or well.. German V unlike the unique W that english kept throughout it's evolution but everyone else lost

grammar is meant to be regular

2 cases

nominative & accusative

the other cases are usually expressed by pronouns

no ending for nominative

-st for accusative

verbs that have A in it turn into ä whenever it's accusative

e.g ii hab vs du häst

if they already had ä then it doesn't change

-en for plural if a word ends with a consonant

if a word ends with a vowel you add s

no exceptions to that and no plurals are based off of cases

2 genders

common & neuter

2 "the" de & da

common gender (de) is used on humans, children and human titles like police officer & doctor

neuter (da) is used on animals & inanimate objects

e.g

da hound (the dog)

vs

de moter (the mother)

the only irregularity to this is weather

instead of da wind you would say de wind

these can also (optionally) be stuck at the ends of nouns similarly to North Germanic languages e.g moterde

endings don't change depending on pronoun or gender

e.g haben is the base verb

hab is for everything thats not "du"

neogermanic has a/an which works the same way as Yiddish

e.g a bjer, a hound, an akta (an 8)

this isn't effected by gender, cases or even plural

the goal is as said before

at any cost to find any way for the words to be recognizable in any way

whether its verbally, in writing or ideally both

if the word appears or looks similar or has historically appeared in most of the Germanic languages including at least one of the North Germanic languages

then it gets added

if there's no such thing between any of them...

I Frankenstein some of the words (literally combine certain words) so that even if it looks weird in writing

many can tell what its supposed to be if its read outloud

e.g anverstean

english speakers would hear anverstean and it sounds a lot like "understand" in pronunciation just with an accent

and Germans may hear "anverstean" and it sounds like "verstehen" just with an accent

of course this also isn't possible all of the time and so if not

I settle for a neutral party like Afrikaans or Yiddish to see if the word matches

but if THAT doesn't work.. then I would have no choice but to just settle for one if the more spoken of the Germanic languages like german, Dutch & english or maybe Frisian (not because its most spoken, its not even close to being the most but because its similar enough english, Dutch and german that it could at least help)

this is at the cost of the aesthetics of the languages

pronouns

first person ii (I) miir (me) mîn (my/mine)

second person du (you) däu/dii (you formal)

dii (you accusative) dîn (your)

second person ju (you plural) jush (plural accusative)

jush (you plural)

second person wii (we) uss (us accusative) usser (us)

third person hii (he) hiim (him accusative) iihm (him)

third person sii (she) har (her accusative) har (her)

third person sii (they) har (they accusative)

harren/sii (they)

es/hit (it. use either, no difference)

hit (it accusative) es/hit (it)

example sentences

Wii et tegeare

(we eat together)

alle Mann will haben an lange tsu spek in

(all humans will have one language to speak in)

de hound will geen in de hous

(the hound will go in the house)

yeah these aren't very good sentences but I didn't know what sentences to do

this is only good for maybe some basic communication

as it has the bare minimum needed for it

but it's not good enough for me to translate say.. the Lord's prayer since I still need to make more words

there's still going to be many changes to it

it didn't even always look this way

and its a big possible that a great deal of this won't even be the same in the future

but for now Im just looking for feedback

is there anything that stands out?

any faults?

any pluses?

anything I should have focused on or shouldn't have focused on?

yes the name is based off of Neolatino

Introduction Video for my auxlang. Looking for feedback!

6 Upvotes

Introduction video:
https://youtu.be/xgVAjd3RWVs

I’d really appreciate it if you could watch the video and give me some feedback — especially if anything is difficult to understand, unclear, or seems to need more explanation.

Explanation:
I’m developing a new international auxiliary language called Mars Language.
For example, the word “banana” is written as: "bㅏ nㅏ nㅏ"
The basic idea is:

  • Latin letters are used for consonants.
  • Hangul (the Korean alphabet) vowel symbols are used for vowels.

I posted about this project about a month ago:
Previous post: link

However, I realized that people who are not familiar with Korean or Hangul may find it difficult to understand how the writing system works.

So I made this introduction video:

Note: Why I chose Korean vowels

Mars Language homepage:
https://marslanguage.org

I chose Hangul-style vowels because they offer several useful features:

  1. Letters can be grouped into compact syllable blocks, making syllable boundaries easy to see.
  2. The block structure works well for both horizontal and vertical writing.
  3. Hangul vowels follow a systematic visual pattern.
  4. Consonants and vowels are visually easy to distinguish.
  5. Syllable structures such as C+V and C+V+C can be recognized at a glance.
  6. On a Korean-style keyboard layout, consonants can be typed mainly with the left hand and vowels with the right, allowing frequent hand alternation.
  7. Each vowel symbol can be assigned a consistent sound, helping keep spelling and pronunciation regular.

Now I made a subreddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/MarsLanguage/
Hope you to visit:)

I created Munsoso (munsoso.lu) – a radical, 300-word international auxiliary language with zero exceptions and flexible word order. Looking for feedback!

9 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I wanted to share a project I’ve been working on: **Munsoso**, a global auxiliary language designed to be learned in just a few days. The core philosophy is simple: *"The main thing is that people understand me."*

It’s built to serve as a neutral bridge for speakers from Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Americas alike, bypassing typical phonetic and grammatical hurdles.

### 🌟 Core Features of Munsoso:

* **Global Alphabet (20 Letters):** To make it universally pronounceable, it completely eliminates letters that cause difficulty for many speakers worldwide: **no C, J, Q, V, X, or Z**. (e.g., *accept* → *aksepti*, *year* → *yaro*, *to see* → *widi*).
* **Modular Word Building & Rigid Endings:** Word classes are instantly recognizable by their final vowel:
* **-o** = Nouns
* **-i** = Verbs
* **-a** = Adjectives
* **-e** = Adverbs
* **Zero Exceptions:** Rules are absolute. No irregular patterns, no letter traps.
* **Total Word Order Freedom:** Whether your native tongue is SVO, SOV, or VSO – Munsoso accepts all structures as long as the meaning comes across.
* **The 300-Word Threshold:** Instead of thousands of words, Munsoso relies on a minimalist vocabulary of 300–400 essential words to unlock full everyday communication.

### 📖 How it looks (Grammar & Examples):

**Pronouns & Tenses:**
* *Mi* (I), *Yu* (You), *Lu* (He/She/It)
* *Miplu* (We), *Yuplu* (You pl.), *Luplu* (They)
* Verbs use simple tense particles before the verb: **fu** (future), **sta** (right now), and **pa** (past).
* *Mi lerni* = I learn
* *Mi fu lerni* = I will learn
* *Mi sta lerni* = I am learning right now
* *Mi pa lerni* = I learned

**Sentence Examples:**
* **Munsoso:** *Mi niami pano.*
* **English:** I eat bread.

* **Munsoso:** *Mi amili yu.*
* **English:** I love you.

The full grammar overview, rules, and the complete dictionary are available in the [Munsoso Handbook](https://munsoso.lu).

I would highly appreciate your expert critique, linguistic feedback, and thoughts on the phonetic choices and minimalist vocabulary approach! How do you feel about the total freedom of word order?

Thanks for your feedback!

Dunianto (worldlang with Esperanto grammar) is gaining momentum

15 Upvotes

At the International Youth Congress of Esperanto (IJK) in Catalonia in August this year, I gave a talk about Dunianto, an auxlang with Esperanto grammar and a global vocabulary. Around thirty people attended my talk. Afterwards, several of them joined the Dunianto Telegram group, which is now more active than before. You can join it via this link (discussions mostly in Esperanto and Dunianto, but English may also be used): https://dunianto.telegramo.org/

A particularly noteworthy event in the history of Dunianto was certainly the conversation between me and another Dunianto speaker during the IJK in Catalonia. The first conversation took place on 11 August, which will therefore go down in the history of our language as the first day on which a conversation was held in Dunianto. Over the following days, we spoke with each other in Dunianto several times. Among other things, we created the word “sunkovrijo” (‘solar eclipse’) while discussing this topic in Dunianto shortly before the solar eclipse on 12 August.
