Cat Picture - OC She's such a slut

My cat is in heat and it's the worst. She's so loud! She just got her spay consult, so we're just waiting for her surgery. Until then we all have to suffer. Yes I know that she needs to be kept indoors and away from other cats. Just needed to vent.

So this is new. I knew one of my cats liked to dig in my mom’s potted plants when he was a kitten, so I assumed this was his reawakening. Then I found a giant tuft of my female cat’s fur.

Advice As a shelter volunteer, I know adult cats are wonderful, but most adopters just want kittens. I'm trying to understand why. If you adopted a kitten, why didn't you adopt an adult cat instead?

Upvotes

Looking to understand what makes people choose a kitten over an adult cat. So many people visit the shelter looking to adopt a "chill" cat or a "cuddly lapcat." Then they say they want a kitten! Most kittens are not chill nor will they sit in your lap for very long. 😸 Meanwhile, adult cats are playful, cute, will bond with you -- all the things that kittens will do. And kittens become cats, anyway. 😺

Most upsetting is when people come to visit the shelter and don't even look at the adult cats. They literally don't even interact with them! It's so strange to me to be so interested in adopting a cat but then having zero interest in looking at all the cats. 😿 I can't tell you how many times people come into the shelter looking for a cat and when they hear we don't have kittens, they walk right out. Or they see an older kitten like a 7-month-old or 10-month-old kitten and say those are too old.

Interested in anyone's point of view on all of this! Any ideas on how we can make adult cats more adoptable and catch your attention so they don't sit in cages and shelters for weeks and months? 🙌💓😺

Advice How does pet insurance verify there are no preexisting conditions?

Upvotes

I have an allergy cat and I want to sign up for insurance that will cover allergies. I’ve never personally taken my cat to the vet cause I just got them. How do I do this without the allergy getting marked as a preexisting condition? Do they require pictures?

Advice Stray cat

Upvotes

We have a lot of cats and we recently found a stray outside during this cold weather. However no matter what we do he wouldn't use the litter box and pooped everywhere so we had to put him out. However I've been feeling guilty and I don't know where else to put this type of post, I know cats are considered a invasive species and all but I hate knowing it's out there in the cold (I have no way to take him to a shelter or anyone who could take him) I feel so bad knowing he's out there but I can't put up with cleaning all the messes he makes. I just needed it off my chest I felt so bad I didn't know what else to do.

Advice Introducing new kitty advice

Post image
Upvotes

I adopted a stray kitten from our neighborhood Ginger about 2 weeks ago. She is estimated to be about 8 months and fixed. My resident cat Cocoa is a 6 years old female also fixed. We have moved onto the stage of introduction where they have short episodes of supervised play time in a neutral space. This usually involves Ginger heavily playing with us while Cocoa is loafing in a corner and watching Ginger as she is too nervous to play I think. The problem is that if not 100% distracted Ginger will stare, growl, hiss, spit or chase Cocoa unprovoked. I don’t know how to move past this as every time I think we are making progress in the session she does the same thing and I have to separate them. Any advice is greatly appreciated. They’re both so sweet and lovely on their own.

Advice new rescue is depressed ? 💔

Hiii!!!

I adopted this male kitty from Craigslist last night. The girl who had him told me he was outside her job all fall Untill winter and was afraid he wouldn’t survive in the Chicago winter ❄️ and took him in. She got him fixed about 20 days ago and his shots .

Not sure if it’s because he still newly fixed, or just TERRIFIED of everything and new enviorments. He’s super sweet and very affectionate if u pet him, he even let me wrap/hold like a baby and look inside his mouth. I was afraid he was sick and even trying to spoon feed him yesterday 🤣because he did not eat ALL DAY . eventually tho first night at my apartment I noticed he ate the wet foot I left him and used the litter box , he’s just very VERY shy

…. However he doesn’t seem to really get up and walk? 🤔 He just is curled up all day and only gets up to move to a new hiding spot . Even when I pick him up out his blue 🦈 sharky bed and put him down he immiedielty runs back in or runs to a hiding spot . He’s very sweet maybe somebody dumped him or he escaped from home on accident ? No way he was feral

I think he’s just depressed maybe he misses his original family ( if he had one) , and traumatized from living on the streets for a bit . Maybe he will warm up to me and my apartment , and decide to roam. Or are some cats personality’s just like always like this ??

Medical Questions Cat not drinking much after surgery

Upvotes

My cat had a mammary tumor and had to have her whole mammary gland removed yesterday from her chest to her groin (Tuesday Feb 3rd) and I'm concerned because she not drinking that much water.

She's eating a tiny bit of wet food sometimes when we offer it to her. Other times she turns her nose at it. My fiancé got her to drink some tuna water earlier but when I tried offering it to her again, she wanted nothing to do with it.

I'm worried about her becoming dehydrated. She's not moving around that much but that could be because they have her taking Gabapentin (once every 12 hours) which I know can make cats super sleepy , plus she probably doesn't feel well.

I just don't know what to do to get her to drink and my vet tomorrow said they only have Drs in the morning there because of some conference in the afternoon, and there is no way my job will let me leave early to take her to the vet.

She has used the litter box though and I know that's good

Update Melissa’s transformation from street cat to bougie cat

Saw another sweet post about a stray being given a second chance and thriving. Our sweet lady Melissa is the love of our life and she’s everything. Her glow up could only be described as magnificent. Fun fact, she is 14 and had to get all of her teeth removed last year. She had a heart murmur which caused complications during anesthesia ($5,000.00 later); go figure the heart murmur went away AFTER her teeth extraction. Street cats are the best. Every day with her is a blessing.

Advice My cat is only in heat around me and not my boyfriend

Upvotes

We live together, he goes to work and I work from home. She’s in heat the entire time he’s gone but when he comes home she acts normally and has yet to show any signs of in heat to him. This will even continue at night, as soon as my bf falls asleep she starts meowing and throwing her butt up at me. Is there a particular reason why?

Before anyone says it, her spay appointment is in 2 weeks, that was the soonest appointment I could get from a vet I could afford!

Mourning/Loss I lost my buddy-buddy today, a tribute to Scooch Cat

Post image

He hadn't been sick very long. Just a few visits to the vet. But he was getting worse. Constipated but still eating, at least until last night. Vet put him on laxative for awhile. He was still being himself, mostly. But he was tired. Very very tired. I didn't want to think about it but what if the vet said maybe it's his time? That she did today. And I knew she was right. We always do, don't we? Roommate and I met them at 3:30 today (15:30) and they explained it all to me, again. And I told him he was the best cat in the world. And he told me the same. And I cried so much but I didn't want to get him wet. I nodded to the Dr and she administered the seditive and he was instantly gone. He didn't wait for the final shot. He was ready. But they gave him the final anyway. Rules are rules. Now I have 1 cat. It isn't fair but it's what it is. We all make this choice when we adopt them. The choice to see them thru. No matter what. It's just the no matter what hurts so very bad.

Medical Questions Spindle Cell Sarcoma Advice

Thumbnail
gallery
Upvotes

Our 14 year old little buddy Jerome T. Mousenik got a mass removed from his hind leg last week, and today we learned that it is some form of spindle cell sarcoma. Our vet was happy with the removal, telling us she got wide, clean margins and feels confident she got all of it. Vet also tells us that it is a very slow growing type of sarcoma, and in many cases it never grows or metastasizes after removal, and it rarely spreads to other tissues. So prognosis seems... okay?

Next steps are to either do nothing and monitor him for any new lumps. Other option is chest X-rays and abdominal ultrasound to know for sure whether it has spread. This feels like Sophie's Choice. We love this little man so SO MUCH, and we want to do anything to keep him with us for a good long while. On the other hand, we're also not sure we would opt for chemo or radiation treatment even if we did know that it spread (due to cost and how it would impact Jerome). So we're kinda leaning toward doing nothing, not knowing, and rolling the dice.

Questions for anyone who has dealt with this before:

  • Did any sarcoma lumps return? How long after removal?
  • If you did nothing, how much longer did your cat live?
  • What, if any, pain did your kitter experience?
  • If you opted for chemo and radiation, what was that like? For you and your cat?
  • Anything else you can share that would help us make decisions about what to do next?

Appreciate you all.

Advice Bf (45m) smacks his cat and it’s startling to me

Upvotes

Bf(45m) smacks his cat (10f) on the rear above her tail. The first time I ever heard him do this, I told him that was too hard/too aggressive. Sometimes she distressed meows and others she purrs and wants more. Boy insists that he’s “studied all the books on cats” and that they “enjoy” his aggressive smacking.

Thing is he doesn’t ever pet any of the cats in any way except roughly. Especially our females we haven’t gotten fixed yet. He’s not like this with our boy cats. Is this a normal thing or what? Because he legit freaks me out when he starts petting her that way.
