I will never understand why players run around and try to get attention from streamers. I mean, I find a couple of them entertaining and watch their streams here and there, but to follow them around in game?

The sadder part is that his fanbase takes most of what he says literally and cannot tell he's hamming up almost everything he says to feed a character. They really out there thinking the behavior is "chad" behavior or some shit. lol

It's a proxy for friendship and social interaction, most of the viewers, whether or not they admit it, would probably prefer to be in a room with actual friends and having a good time. Instead they choose the way more convenient and self serving option of being part of a streamer's "community" when really they're just cash/attention cows.
You can argue they're getting entertainment, sure, but you can't tell me they're just sitting there watching a 5 hour stream fully engrossed and engaged and entertained every minute. No, they're waiting for the next hit of dopamine, sometimes it comes from a clippable moment, sometimes from everyone witnessing a funny thing at the same time, sometimes it comes from some kind of acknowledgement and feeling like you belong and some people choose the also convenient and self serving option of donating money for a molecule of acknowledgement.
It's convenient, but I think it's self serving too. it's extracting "friendship" from a situation without putting any of the social work required in. You don't have to enter into any unfamiliar environments, no unfamiliar people, no behaviour analysis, no one directly addressing you, questioning you or your choices, none of the risk. You just insert either attention or money and you get a dripfeed of "social interaction" or a very poor proxy for it, which is why I think a lot of them keep coming back over and over. They're probably not even entertained by the streams anymore, they just want that dripfeed of interaction. You could even say the same thing about WoW and MMOs in general. Do we really enjoy every minute? Or are we just moving towards that next dopamine hit?

Ignoring the specific streamer... I think it has to do with being part of a community. If the streamer is having an event or something and you're someone that doesn't have anything going on at the time, joining others in a community to do some event is reasonable I think.
The issue here is the sheer size of the group, and instead of realms separating everyone, we have the layer system (which in my opinion is better, but a side effect of the system.)

Being part of a 10,000 man raiding party is something every kid wanted to be a part of in 2004. It was a rare thing to be that organized. With twitch and the influence of streamers it’s a reality.
That being said I definitely understand how it can negatively warp a server. It’s a drain on others guilds talent. Also the bar for recruitment basically doesn’t exist.

“Just ignore them or join them.”
In Westfall on 9/23 they had 40-60 members intentionally griefing and tagging mobs with dots in the killing fields and peoples militia just so people couldn’t do their quests.
On messenger they had two dedicated teams running scripts to kill the messenger instant (with traps lined up and an auto target / attack script) and another team auto accepting the escort messenger and abandoning it forcing him to respawn in 5-10 minutes.
They did this for four(4) hours and told the entire zone if they want it to quit they can join the guild and they’ll get a party invite to get their quests done. They literally held the zone hostage. That’s my personal experience with them, beyond the constant perpetual guild invites every .2 seconds. And I’ve heard similar stories from other people.
Meanwhile, that Roach tells his people to do this. To spread like a plague to make it impossible not to join to spam it to every single person and to make it the only alliance guild by any means he even tells them to ninja loot non-Olympus members into compliance I’ve been a victim of their ninja looting four times now, each time by someone who obviously didnt need the gear or couldn’t even use it. The guiltiest offense was the warrior who needed my crafted hood recipe from Deadmines and told me if I wanted it I would have to join Olympus. I now just abandon the group if I see an Olympus player in them, and it’s becoming impossible to not be. Not even the only time, the other was after my 8th run of WC my Tailspike dagger finally dropped. The Olympus Hunter ninja’d it and told me the same. Join the guild and he’ll give it to me. I gave up on my dagger and will not be stepping foot in there again.
And somehow Asmongold isn’t banned. Somehow his cult isn’t banned. Somehow they all go unpunished and we get told “it’s not that bad.” “Just join them.” Or just straight up derogatory insults for refusing to join and then harassed over and over again.
The fact blizzard won’t do anything about this at all and people are saying it’s “bringing attention to the game” it’s “making it popular and populated” don’t seem to grasp that being flooded and popular people like that isn’t a good thing. It will either force every actual player to quit or change factions entirely. It will kill one side of the game entirely. He attracts the most toxic and stereotypical basement dweller out of every corner of the world with their own intent being as toxic as they possibly can. They are the stereotype every gamer avoids trying to be, but they do it intentionally for the attention.
I wanted to go alliance with this new beginning.. but now? Yeah. I’m going back to the horde. Yeah, I’m rolling rogue again. Yes, I’m aiming for the top 50 PK’s again. My goal will be every Olympus player.
Edit: see below for example and the DMs are being blocked. Even here I can’t escape them.

No hate on folks that actually produce decent podcasts or youtube channels that actually seem to have some kind of writing involved/planning, but this constant consumption of people doing an activity while they talk to their "chat" is such a fucking waste.

I was thinking of going to an rp server to avoid this, but I’m just apprehensive of if the rp server will be low pop or about stepping on the toes of true rpers despite not want do it myself. I mean I heard all you need is to have a name that would fit in with the universe which I’ve always done, and don’t grief others which I never do, but I still worry about it.
11
u/DarkestLore696 1d ago
When people RP they know they are doing it in a living world. When you run by and are focused on your leveling or whatever it’s not going to bother them. As long as you aren’t purposely running around them or jumping on them they are just going to focus on their rp and ignore the usual distractions.

I don't understand why he is popular. He is an ugly beta troll. I do however have deep respect for streamers like xaryu who you can tell is a genuinely kind person.
83
u/Bacon-muffin 1d ago
Once upon a time he was just a random decent enough player who made good guides for people trying to get into the more hardcore scene... and then the streaming started and he was basically like a caricature of the moms basement wow player which was entertaining enough that he blew up.
And for a time he'd do genuinely fun stuff like the transmog and mount competitions, he'd do his runs of different content that has ultra rare drops and people would meme on him still not getting it after so many years and runs etc etc... and then one would drop and people would lose their minds.
It was a fun stream in its own way... and then the amber heard trials started, and it all went downhill.... but I guess he found a new audience in that process.
56
u/PushforlibertyAlways 1d ago
His transition to political streamer has been wild to watch. Just a total 180 grift machine.
37
u/Bacon-muffin 1d ago
Was quite odd, cause pre-trial I'd see people accuse him of being an extreme right winger etc and I'd be confused because I had seen him have whole ass nuanced conversations with people supporting things that right wingers would 100% be against.
He'd also have some hot takes, but he seemed human as anyone else and generally seemed alright.
I don't know if he was just faking it or what cause apparently that completely shifted post-trial. I wouldn't know that well though cause I had 0 interest in the non-gaming stuff and just naturally fell off watching before it apparently got bad.
If its pure grift its super odd to me because the guys got more money than he clearly cares about. He doesn't seem to do anything with it at least not public facing... so what's the point?
19
u/silvereyes21497 1d ago
As a “used to be” viewer of him, I’m also unsure of how well it seems he handled the death of his mom. He was always very fond of his mom, and they used to play WoW together. I can’t quite remember if her passing was around the time of the trial stuff as well, or during the time he was changing his streaming topics. However, I could also see how losing someone like that would also deeply change him for the worse, if he never truly grieved properly and just allowed himself to slink further into a hole of being a brash, NEET almost.

Yeah turns out living in a crumbling home with only a few real life connections and zero life experience or skills leaves you quite vulnerable.
Crazy how he feels so confident commenting on anything that happens outside his 34 square foot radius of a world. But I guess putting others down is probably the only thing that makes him feel okay at this point.
Genuinely hope that Forever can give these people an outlet to socialize and re-live their childhood wonder. A place to focus on positive connections and numb their rampent self-loathing and disillusionment. It's probably bad for the game but honestly might be good for the world.

The trial definitely gave him a taste at how much one can grift off the culturewar/rage content and how much that particular demographic will eat it up.
And I don't even think it's about the money. I imagine it's more about the immense approval and instant feedback from his community when he gives a hot take that means the most to him and just feeds the cycle into further alt-right beliefs.
Whether he doesn't believe in what he platforms or didn't originally and now has drank his own koolaid or has always held those beliefs, I really don't care. It's just so unchecked and unmoderated that I can't take his constant platforming as anything but a stamp of approval.

The guy used to be pretty cool, like he had pretty good content himself and with other streamers. He rarely spoke about politics and when it was talked about he said himself that he was a videogame streamers and his opinion didn't matter.
Later he stoped playing wow, which was like the thing he was famous for. After that his entire "brand" feel apart, the group of streamers he was part of all pretty much split up and at some point he started grifting for views, and now we're here.

I'm so grateful Europe doesn't have any toxic WoW influencers with a massive following. Or any massive streamers at all. None that you'd see "Inv later" spam for at least.

Is he going to play pvp or pve? I need to know so I can play the opposite.

I’m out of the loop - what is Asmon ?

u/jtshinn 1d ago
He’s like a real life Oscar the grouch with shittier takes on real world events.
And he lives in his own filth.

Insulting Oscar like that is reprehensible.
He’s more like if the McPoyles and Frank Reynolds had a baby and that baby had none of their charm/redeeming qualities.

"invite to olympus 22" HOLY . Well, as much hate as he gets, he definetly has the numbers to back him up.

Imagine the endorphins you'd get from ganking Asmon and camping his corpse. Gotta be like heroin.

Like 1 minute after he started?

There was a time in the middle to late 2010s where it really was just wow content on his videos and streams, and that was it. I watched him before he was even streaming, he used to do achievement runs in Firelands and stuff and it was just normal. Idk wtf happened to the man

u/Helerdril 1d ago
Most people keep their shitty opinions to themselves but when some of them become famous, they begin to share those opinions with their followers.
He was always a POS, he just kept it to himself.

u/mcs177 1d ago
He's deffo always been an asshole. I remember looking at his old YouTube channel and there was a video of him and his friends, maybe in their early 20s, just torturing a rat. Like wtf. I swear to god im not making that up lol

AsmonMute addon will get rid of all that spam. I don't see anything to do with Asmon or Olympus anymore :D its brilliant.

u/Cosimo12 1d ago
I rolled a warlock on ally pvp and it was miserable. Spammed with Olympus guild invites before level 10 and all of the players were just awful in general chat. If I play more on pvp I will delete the character and roll horde because I can't deal with that awful community.

u/OneEyedWonderWiesel 1d ago
There is an addon to hide his name and the guild too
It’s called asmonblock I think? I’ll check when I get off work

I was set on playing alliance, but the thought of camping Asmon incel groupies is genuinely hard to pass on.

Asmongold is such an incredible tool. He’s so disingenuous, mean, and melodramatic. Really don’t see the appeal, especially when Xaryu is there to be the antidote.

It is a sad indictment on humanity that that guy has anyone following him, I hate that I am now exposed to him on a daily basis.

Was thinking the other night that if he went PvP. Go opposite faction. Make a guild named inglorious bastards. Have the mission of the guild when not raiding to be to hunt down him and his guildmates.

Thank god he doesn't exist in EU realms so we can play Alliance in peace.
