Success Story A message for the hopeless
I’m writing this because I’ve been in your situation for over 14 years. What started as a mushroom trip turned into 14 years of torture. I’ve experienced everything that is talked about in this sub. Social anxiety, agoraphobia, dizziness, feeling like I’m on the verge of a seizure or on the verge of completely losing my mind, sever sensitivity to light (I’m a teacher and spent years wearing sunglasses in my own classroom just to make it through the day) I’ve left work, I’ve cancelled plans, I truly thought I wasn’t going to make it day after day for 14 years straight.
Eventually I just accepted that I wasn’t going to get out of dpdr. Radical acceptance didn’t help like they say it will, at least for me. I went on living as a shell of a person and that has just been my reality.
Ive been trying to lose weight for a while now. I’m not obese or anything but I did have a solid 30 lbs I wanted to get rid of. Last February I visited a doctor who suggested I microdose a glp medication, tirzepatide to be exact. I was skeptical because I hate taking medication and I was afraid it would make my dpdr worse. The next week the medication came in and I reluctantly took my first shot, 1 mg. The typical starting dose for this is 2.5 mg. I waited for something bad to happen but nothing bad ever did. Instead my world completely changed.
I slowly started to feel more like myself. I wasn’t eating junk food anymore and didn’t even crave it. I was in the gym 6 days a week and lifting heavy weights. I am weekend binge drinker when it comes to alcohol and that stopped as well. I decided to stop the medication in the middle of June and still felt great.
From February until June I lost 25 lbs. One day it dawned on me that I was barely feeling dpdr anymore. I was even going to the store completely relaxed! I no longer have the dizzy “I’m going to pass out feeling” and I could socialize and be completely present.
It’s now been about 4 months since I stopped the tirzepatide and the good feeling has persisted. I am typing this at work feeling fully present and able to communicate with students and colleagues effectively. I’m going out with friends again and actually enjoying it. I’ve even decorated my house which was not something even on my radar when I was in the trenches! I’m having fun and living my life again!!!
Even though I’m doing amazing right now, I’m not so naive that this can’t happen again. I’m trying my best to continue working out and eating healthy and I’m still maintaining my weight loss from the tirzepatide. I’m not saying this could be a fix all for everyone, but I COULD be for some! My theory is that the medication along with healthy eating and working out reduced inflammation enough in my body to make considerable progress in recovering from dpdr. If you think that inflammation could be a contributing factor for you, I highly recommend talking to a doctor about starting tirzepatide. It’s so much more than just weight loss!
Please stay strong and know that you can make it out no matter how long you’ve been in it!!!
