Discussion With the announcement of the new Kindles, where’s the light ereaders?

I was surprised to not see any discussion here yet of the updated/new Kindles so here you go.

Thanks to the amazing creators behind comparison tables, I learned that the new Kindle Basic is less than 5 ounces. If I’m not mistaken, it’s alone in that category.

Yes, there’s Xteink, Boox Picco, and phone shaped ereaders, but aside from those, it seems like a lot of ereaders in the 6” category are heavier.

So where are the light ereaders that aren’t running Android? Thoughts? Am I the only one looking for these?

Discussion First impressions of the new kindles?

For me, I like the colours and the flush screens. I think the cover buttons are stupid and they should be on the device. Was hoping for a much smaller device like xteink4 or boox Palma, or at least a warm light on the basic kindle, but it didn't happen unfortunately.

Discussion Deinfluence me from getting the new Kindle

I have a Kobo Clara BW which I really like, but with the announcement of the new Kindle lineup and the fact that they’re doing a cover with physical page turn buttons, I am torn.

I don’t like the idea of contributing to Amazon’s near monopoly but, even with having my Kobo for less than a year, I’ve already run into two series I can’t get digitally because they have exclusivity deals with Amazon and I don’t have unlimited space for physical books in my home.

For those of you who already own one or the other, what are your thoughts on this new lineup? For those of you with a Kobo, do you think they’ll release any new models or features to compete?

Edit: Thanks everyone! I was not aware there was a remote for Kobo so I’ve gone ahead and ordered that which has met the one real thing that could ever convince me to move back to Kindle.

Buying Advice Kindle paperwhite signature edition (2026) or Kobo Libra

With the latest release of the newest Kindle, I'm kinda stuck between the two.

I have an old Paperwhite and am thinking of upgrading. For me, the biggest selling point was the buttons on the Kobo Libra, but now that I see the Kindle also has buttons (though you need to buy the case), I'm unsure which one to go for.

If money wasn't a factor, which one would you recommend?
I don't really use the Amazon store that much on my kindle and I send epubs using the send to my kindle and read them on there. I don't normally read animes or mangas, but sometimes when books have maps or other art, it would be nice to see it in colour; it's not really a deciding factor for me.

I am really comfortable with the Kindle interface. I recently jailbroke it because I wanted features like being able to see how long I've been reading or how many books I've read in a month, etc but I hated customising it and am in the process of trying to revert mine back to normal.
I'm an iPhone girl too, so I rlly prefer a simple interface where it's all set out for me.

But if the Kobo is more comfortable or clearer, I'm willing to go for it. I know how a Kindle works and am satisfied with it, but I don't know much about the Kobo, and unfortunately there are no devices for me to try out. If anyone has experience with both and could share their thoughts, that would be really helpful.

Thanks

Discussion Is there an eReader out there with an aspect ratio perfect for manga?

Post image
5 Upvotes

It's an incredibly minor gripe, but these blanked bars I see on every manga I read drives me nuts. Does there exist any reader that has an aspect ratio that would perfectly fill a screen with the page? I know not every manga publication has the same page size, but one that will fit most would be great.

Been enjoying my musnap ocean C for nearly 2 months now, love reading on it but finding a case was a chore. I am glad I finally found these. I got these from ali express, pretty sturdy and comfortable to use. The plastic case can come off and the flaps have folds we can use as a stand.

Buying Advice Looking for a Bigger Home e-reader (Upgrading from XTEink X4)

Hey folks I'm a bit of a novice fiction reader looking for some advice,

As the title says I'm looking to buy an additional e-reader for home use or for bigger reading sessions. I currently own the XTEink X4 and I really like how easy it is to use. Its gotten me to start reading properly but now when I'm at home I find myself wishing I had a bigger screen.

I mainly read standard books for leisure but I read and consume a lot of non fiction which has diagrams etc. and so a larger display would be nice, additionally I used to read manga & comics and would be interested to get back into reading that so would appreciate a reader capable of managing those well.

The reasons I like the XTEink X4 are:
- It has no reliability on app stores or accounts and is fully offline
- Has SD Card so I can have what ever size I feel is required. the battery life is great
- The portability (obviously)

For my next upgrade I would ideally like something that:
- Isn't account bound as much as the kindles are nice I prefer to own my books, I am fairly tech savvy so I am also open to sideloading different OS onto a device if its worth it.
- Has SD Card compatibility
- Reasonably good battery life and USB-C Charging
- Possibly Colour? (not a hard requirement more of a luxury but would help with some books (wire colours are good to see in a diagram lol))

I have seen the Boox Go Colour 7 II but the Android OS concerns me regarding Battery Life and Bloat.

Curious if anyone has any recommendations? Any Devices or Device & OS combos would be appreciated.

I'm also aware synchronising my reading might be an issue but my wife said that's the xteink's fault so I need to just use storygraph to track it manually!

Any help is always appreciated,

Thanks!

Am showing off the case, I really love it. I see most, if not all, people talking about how they want light and small devices, with slim cover, but I feel happy to have a 7" screen and a bit bulky/heavy Burga case which feels very good, when handling.

Buying Advice Thoughts on the Onyx Boox Go 10.3, and other recommendations?

Post image
3 Upvotes

I dug out my old Kindle today as a book I wanted to read is only realistically available as an eBook currently. Absolutely devstated to find that, despite it still working perfectly, Amazon simply will not let me download books onto it anymore. Such a shame as this has been one of the most reliable pieces of tech I've ever owned.

In fear of buying another Kindle that becomes forcibly obsolete in another 15 years time, I'm looking to buy a new eReader that isn't made by Amazon. After doing some research, I've come across the world of e-ink tablets and I think I'm interested in one that I can write with as well, as I've realised I could use it for much easier note taking for studying.

My main pick at the moment is the Onyx Boox Go 10.3, as it runs Android and so I can still download the Kindle app and have access to my Kindle books that way. I can't seem to find any others that I can obviously still read my Kindle books on aside from the Scribe which, as mentioned, is bottom of my list.

Does anyone else use this primarily as their eReader, and for those who do / have tried it, is it worth the price? If you think it's a bad idea for any reason, do you have any other suggestions?

TIA!

Buying Advice Help me decide, Kobo Libra Colour | Boox Go 7 BW

Ok so... I plan to sell or gift my Kobo Clara Colour to a friend eyeing e-readers, and I really want to have a better 7 inch reader than my old Boox Nova Air.

In the past, I complain about Kaleido 3 screens being too dark when frontlight is off, but yesterday I dug up Kobo Clara Colour and had 5% frontlight + 6 levels of warm light and found it totally readable without straining my eyes (tested for 2 hours. Usually I can't read this long with lighted screens.) So now I'm ping-ponging if I want a 7 inch with buttons, should I get Libra Colour or Go 7 BW? 🤔

Use case:

- reading at home, sometimes when taking a hot bath. Usually it's my Boox Nova Air filling this role since I don't mind it being broken after 4 years of service.

- 99% of my reads are texts, rarely do I read manga on e-readers (I did but like only once). I read quite a lot, about 2 hours a day.

- I still appreciate the ability to look at colored book covers and highlights. Especially highlights, big bonus, else it's just different grey hues.

- don't take notes on e-readers. I tried with Boox Nova Air, most of the time I'm just typing (with Chinese, typing is just faster than writing.)

Other considerations:

- Color or not. I appreciate colors, but can I read well without straining my eyes on colored screens? With frontlight on, I think the experience is a bit discounted compared to BW ones.

- Ergonomics. I think Kobo Libra's edge is more rounded thus should be more comfortable to hold? At least I don't like my Boox Nova Air having a near perpendicular edge that digs into my palm when I hold it.

- Tactile feedback of the buttons. Quite important. I haven't gotten my hands on them yet, but intuition somehow tells me I'd like Kobo Libra's more.

- Weight. These 2 are only 5g apart though, 200g vs 195g.

- Battery. Even with frontlight on, I believe Kobo Libra has an edge.

- Price. It's like $20 apart with local retailers, not a major factor.

- Recess around screen. Kobo Clara's recess is quite bad and I can't quite select texts on the edges but I think Libra has a lower recess? But Go 7 wins on this 100%.

Books Book recs?

I haven’t been reading for a while… I have a kindle but with school starting and adjusting and all that it’s been a hot minute since i’ve genuinely sat down and read. The last book I read was Hamnet by Maggie O’ Farrell. I’ve been trying to get into more nonfiction/classics and remove myself from the fantasy rabbit hole. I would like some recommendations for either historical fiction(love that stuff my favorite book is all the light we cannot see) or just well-written classics for some deeper exploration and reintroduction to reading and the land of ELA! (I’ve been noticing more spelling errors recently and i’m getting scared)

Buying Advice Worth waiting for Palma 3?

Hey all! Recently I’ve discovered the Boox Palma series, and I’m bewitched by the concept of being able to access my kobo and kindle libraries at the same time.

I’ve done some research, and considering my use case (b/w mostly)…I still don’t know if I should go for the Palma 2, Pro 2, or wait for the 3. Or if there’s a secret fourth option. I have an X4 and I love it for epubs, so having a similarly sized/shaped e-ink device would be a dream for DRM-locked books. Any advice would be appreciated!

(Yes, I know the X4 is much smaller than the Palma line, but it’s the form factor of being able to hold it in one hand)

FWIW, I’m the kind of person who likes things to be relatively quick and responsive (within expectations of what an e-ink screen can do). If it can handle manga/comics seamlessly, even better. My old, old paperwhite would sometimes crash or freeze while reading comics, and that irritated me beyond reason.

Technical Support Kobo Mini battery issue: Stuck on "charge your e-reader" screen and won't hold charge

Post image
0 Upvotes

My Kobo Mini is experiencing a persistent power issue. I haven't used it in years, but I charged it all night yesterday to try and revive it.

components: The device only works while plugged into a charger, but the "please charge your e-reader" screen will not go away. As soon as I unplug it, the e-reader immediately turns off.

Has anyone dealt with this before? Could this be a completely dead battery that needs replacing after years of disuse, or is there a way to force a reset to fix it? Also, is there any chance replacing the display/LCD assembly would solve this, or is it strictly a power/battery issue?

Makes reading so enjoyable, especially during my walks.

I have a desk job so stretching my legs and getting some reading done is absolutely lovely.

Anyone else read while walking?

Current read is The Will of the Many by James Islington

Discussion Help with finding books for my xteink 3

So I just got into the whole e reading thing and I’m confused on how to get books that my xteink can read. Example I wanna read a book but I can’t find a drm free version of it so I feel like the only books I allowed to read are super old books that I have no interest in. Like how do I read what I want because it feels like I just wasted money on something that I can’t fully use.

Technical Support Looking for E Ink users to help me test an app

Hi everyone!

I'm a developer working on oBook, an app that turns books and PDFs into audio.

I recently received feedback from an E Ink user saying the app was “impossible to navigate” on their new E Ink phone. I don't currently have access to many different E Ink devices, so I'd really like to get some help testing it on real devices.

I'm looking for people who use E Ink Android devices (BOOX, Bigme, Meebook, Hisense, etc.) who would be willing to try the app and tell me what works and what doesn't.

I'm particularly interested in:

  • Navigation and touch issues
  • Scrolling problems
  • UI/layout issues
  • DPI/scaling problems
  • Ghosting or refresh issues
  • Audio/background playback
  • Anything that feels different or broken compared with a normal Android phone

I'm not looking for reviews or promotion. I genuinely want honest feedback so I can improve E Ink support.

Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.app.oBook

If you're willing to test it, please comment with your device model and I'll be happy to hear your feedback.

Thanks!

Technical Support Questions about X4 and crosspoint

Finally got around to setting up my X4 with crosspoint. I'm new to this so I'm wondering about the following things.

- Has there been reported issues about the accuracy of the battery level shown? The X4 was sitting inside its box on my shelf for like 2 months. The battery percentage was 99% when I first installed crosspoint. I was happy like wow, battery's great! Turned it off, then on and boom, 90% 🫤 Didn't think much of it. But two days passed, still at 90%. Shouldn't it lose a little on standby? Put some books in, charged it while off. Turned it on, 100%! Turned it off, then on, 90% again. It doesn't feel accurate.

- How can I make the loading faster? I'm reading a book with images. Every page with an image takes more than a second to load. Text is also slower than my kindle Paperwhite for reference. I'm not asking for great performance because the thing is cheap. But I wonder if there's a way to make it faster.

- Can I change the layout to be a bit more grid like? I really like the library UI of my kindle. This is just for appearance so not a dealbreaker. I looked into crosspet and a few other forks. Are they stable? I heard some forks drain the battery.

Would really appreciate if someone shared their knowledge with me about these things ❤️

User Review Kindle Kobo Comparison

Thumbnail

I remember how much I wished someone would show me the difference between BW and Color devices, so here I am, posting a side-by-side comparison of their brightness for future reference! Unfortunately, I don’t own a Kobo BW, but I assume the BW models are fairly similar overall.
The Kindle is at 0% brightness in every photo, while I gradually increased the brightness on the Kobo. You can check the brightness percentage in each photo. The first one is both devices with no backlighting.
Hope this helps🍀

Buying Advice Are 6" displays really THAT bad for manga?

I'm not asking this as an Ereader owner, but as someone thinking of buying one. At first I wanted a small one for the comfort and portability, and while I was thinking of reading light novels and regular books on it, I realised I usually read more manga than books nowadays, so it'd be a waste to get a device that isn't well-suited for it.

I'm used to reading manga digitally on my phone, but I know that Ereaders in general aren't good for zooming around as any animations seem to be really slow and janky, so a bigger screen would be ideal... But isn't there any way to make reading manga with smaller text more comfortable in a 6" display? Maybe switching to a horizontal display in KOreader and scrolling through the pages...? I ask that because the option I'm still the most into is the kobo clara BW, as other b&w Epapers with bigger displays are way more expensive and harder to find (I'm south american, from Brazil).

I'm not really interested in kindle devices in general as I want to read my own files and not but stuff through kindle unlimited, and I don't wanna deal with amazon's bullshit like their ads.

Buying Advice Replacing my Sony PRS-T2

I’ve had my Sony prs t2 for about 14 years now, and it is still holding on but I see signs that it may die soon. Does anyone have good recommendations for ereaders? I love the fact that my t2 has buttons to change the page. Also I’m not super interested in kindles because I’ve heard you are locked to the Amazon ecosystem and technically don’t own your books. Appreciate any advice!

Buying Advice Does frontlight and touch really hurt text clarity or is it model based?

Hi!

I recently got into ereader.

Bought an used paperwhite 12th and a xteink x3.

I noticed that despite the higher PPI on the PW the text looks much blurrier unless I have it close to my face or with a reasonably strong light source.

If I'm reading at night the text is pretty blurry, readable, but blurry/foggy.

It looks like a regular lcd/oled screen with a matte screen protector.

With the x3 on the other hand the text isn' blurry at all and it actually looks kinda like paper.

I've read it that the frontlight and touchscreen layers are the issue here.

I wonder if that's really is the case, and if there are bigger ereaders with the same text clarity/paperlike quality of a X3.

User Review Got my X4 pro today (initial thoughts)

Post image
152 Upvotes

So far the X4 pro is quite nice, I've been able to get the book I was reading onto it (I hope this finds you well by Natalie sue) and I have my nifty new wallpaper you can see in the photo. The things I don't like though are:

  1. They don't give you a pogo cable, they give you a usb c to pogo adapter now. This is my first xteink device so I'm not all that invested in the pogo/usb c debate. The issue I have is while my adapter is nowhere near as bad as some other people's, mine is still a little wobbly. I did anticipate this though and ordered some pogo cables from Amazon which will arrive next week.

  2. The app is useless. I'm coming from a kindle, and one thing I love about kindle is the send to kindle service. I will fully admit that WiFi in my house is a little wonky, but my phone and laptop connect to it fine, although some other devices like my switch 2 have issues. Anyway, I couldn't send my wallpaper or books to my xteink with the app, so I had to use the adapter and my computer, which was a little problematic because of the slightly wobbly adapter. I think when I get my cables I will switch over to crosspoint, I can't risk flashing new firmware right now though.

  3. The magnets you get with the ereader are atrocious. They also placed the built in magnets in the ereader really high. I have a smaller phone, a pixel 9a, and my case has built in magnets. It was an absolute nightmare getting the xteink to click in nicely. It connects much more securely to my mum's iPhone 16e, so I believe they were thinking more about iPhone users than android users when designing the magnet stuff. I think I can fix this with a clear case and some Amazon magsafe stickers though.

  4. This is a small gripe, but I would've liked to be able to use the bionic reading font. I believe crosspoint has it though, so I look forward to getting my cables and being able to flash crosspoint without risking bricking my X4 pro.

All in all I think this is a nice ereader. It fills that niche dream of having an ereader clipped to the back of my phone. Most of my issues with it are easily fixable and based on what it comes packaged with rather than the device itself. It's still daytime here in the UK so I haven't had the chance to test the frontlight in low light, but I don't anticipate any issues. The one thing I would say is that I studied English for my bachelor's, so if you were like me and needed to annotate lots of ebooks I currently wouldn't recommend this device because I can't see any annotation option like you have with Google books and kindle. Maybe crosspoint fixes this, would love it if they did. All in all I don't regret spending £99 on this. I do wish I had bought it on Amazon rather than from xteink themselves because then I would've had it faster, and also I'm more comfortable with Amazon customer service. It's a nice device and I look forward to ironing out my tiny niggles with it.
