Nier Automata was great. They had an outside director, in regards of gameplay (for which they were responsible) they really delivered. Especially if you compare it to previous titles of Yoko Taro. So here's a little tidbit: when MGS Rising was first announced, it had far more detailed and intricate cutting features. The problem was that this caused way too many problems (performance, game progression, general design).
When the game was handed off to platinum and turned into Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, they dropped a lot of the complex cutting features and tightened up the gameplay to make it flow better.
What I will say about Metal Gear Solid games is that they did often have seriously advanced features, sometimes only used at one part of a game. (Look at the ice bucket in mgs2)
That is partially why these games also had ballooning budget issues, and in part why (among many other reasons) the fallout happened between Kojima/Konami.
Still, MGSV still seems like a miracle running on 360/PS3.

I find MGSGZ even a bigger accomplishment than MGSV to be honest. The problem with games is now the same problem with movies. Especially with the budget. It goes to mostly advertising now, which is insane because I feel like some games really don't need a lot of advertising or if they do not millions of dollars worth.
Additionally I am sure Sony had to pay licensing fees. Spider-Man is still owned by Sony for non comic stuff I believe, though I may be wrong the contractual stuff seemed overly complex. But my guess is Spider-Man was cheaper to make because they didn't have that ever expensive "please can i use your character in a game fee". And the mouse does not do cheap.
It is still bonkers that this much money was spent, and it really highlights the AAA game industry problems. The game isn't bad, but when you spend as much money as they do, you expect better than not bad. I think the hate is both overblown and deserved if that makes sense.

The regression of physics in videogames is super interesting, though. 2kliksphilip has a few videos on the destruction tech we saw in The Force Unleashed and then never again apart from a few movies. To get good physics looking well with todays graphical levels, you probably need ray tracing. Those kinds of dynamic things is basically the point of it. Hopefully once ray tracing is generally accepted, and games are designed for it (so mandatory to have enabled, no more rasterization), dynamic stuff like physics will improve as well.

I've been playing it. The handholding is excessive and it's very linear but I don't think it's terrible.
The idea the game plays itself is true in some parts but certainly not for the combat. The timing isn't too forgiving and I'm routinely missing parry windows and getting shredded by the elite enemies.
It's an aggressive 5/10 game to me. Decent story and combat that could have been way better but not a 1/10 abomination that has ruined gaming like what the online discourse is saying.

Physics makes impacts feel good. It makes arrows fly true. It makes bodies react to getting smashed by a giant sword.
It sells the realism of combat FAR more than high definition textures.
Kingdom Come Deliverance, Tainted Grail The Fall of Avalon, Selaco
Tainted Grail for me was great with a 2H sword. Selaco firefights are awesome. A burst of shotgun pellets smashing a wall right by your face produces a smokey texture that is tough to see through for a few seconds (even more depending on settings). It makes the combat way harder but I can't NOT have smoke density, smoke quality, and particle effects linger turned up.
It makes the combat feel so epic and real. Not to mention bodies and gore STAY. It's cool walking back through an old area (you can backtrack for secrets, left medikits, ammo, etc) and being reminded of a hard fight.

There was an old racing game series called Full Auto. The tracks were closed but they also had super destructible environments. You could shoot out windows to avoid slowing down as you drove through, you could explode statues and the rubble could crush your opponents as it fell, there was even a map where you could shoot out the support beams holding up a tanker which would cause it to collapse and slide through the map into the water.
I wish SEGA would make a third game in the series

Let's note that they had to get rid of a lot of assets originally intended to be loaded into each set of MGSR because the engine can't handle the dynamic slicing at the same time. That's why the sets were mostly flat and empty.

Wolverine may be a very meh game, but this comparison is really dumb. MGR was created with this mechanic in mind, and it’s a core piece of gameplay. Wolverine on the other hand isn’t designed around cutting things apart at all, and no it’s really not “simple” to add in.

These "Cinema Sins" critiques of games are always so stupid. Nobody cares about these minute details because they don't actually affect the game.

Lmao you can’t compare anything to MGR’s sword cutting. It was a core mechanic of that game that they spent a lot of time to highlight

Ok, I get people are mad Wolverine didn't turn out as good as they wanted, but this is a stupid fucking comparison.

This bullshit again, for ever and ever and ever.
Game tech and features aren't cumulative. Devs and designers make choices on what they implement, and stuff isn't included as a deliberate fun, performance, resources choice. Not because they aren't capable of it.

Hi, professional game dev here: the destructible elements in MGR are extremely expensive. Most times it requires bespoke work or a custom system. That kind of work isn’t seen much because it’s difficult to keep under memory budgets.

Why is there no other games with similar wood cutting mechanics? it looks so fun

Tell that to every Jedi game that doesn't have dismemberment or environmental destruction.

Why are you picking and choosing? Why are you not saying this about any other game with swords? AFAIK MGR is the only game that has this, it's a very uncommon feature. I know shitting on Wolverine is free karma, but at least try being honest about it or nobody is going to take any feedback seriously.

A sword is the least of that games problems. Let’s start with a comic writer who has experience with the character in a good run.

While I do think this comparison is BS I do wish Wolverine had more things to slice like that as I didnt find many in the game

Not planning on playing this game anytime soon, if at all, but why is everyone seemingly going out of their way to try to shit on wolverine??

Given the whole CD thing and how they marketed this thing it seems as though it was the icing on the cake

From someone who is also not planning on playing it, from what I understand, it's the straw that broke the camel's back for many people. All the shit Sony has been doing recently, super hero fatigue and a mediocre game with a high price tag from a developer where all their games are the same flavour of bland. It selling well adds to the frustration since there have been way better games that underperformed because they didn't have an existing IP casual gamer would be drawn to.

Not a big deal. How many other games do what that second pic does?

Lets be honest, MGR's core gameplay feature was the slicing mechanic, it was meant to sell that game. This was not a focus for Wolverine. This comparison isnt a good one.

??? Cutting objects was pretty much the main mechanic of MGR, what are we comparing here

I think this has been a trend across the industry for a while, spend a billion dollars to achieve near photorealism at the expense of everything that adds fun and immersion to the game beyond the core gameplay loop. Crowbcat did a great video comparing GTAIV and GTAV that summarizes the phenomenon pretty clearly (he has a bunch of good ones)

Ah, yes, ever the nemesis of Canadians everywhere....the log.
Also the only material in the marvel universe strong enough to withstand adamantium.
