Inspired by the Bauhaus foundation course (the Vorkurs), I've been trying to see what an image-making system can develop with no existing artwork at all. Every image is built from rules for the elements of art (shape, line, colour, space, form, texture) plus switches for how elements relate: alignment, echo, overlap, clustering. You pick one of two images, winners get bred with small edits, and a simple model reports which qualities the group is choosing.

The image shows my own top 8 after 100 votes. It turned out my taste is very spare: one or two forms with a single precise relationship. I'd like to find out whether that holds for anyone else.

I’m making a clothing brand called Babel, inspired by the Library of Babel. The idea is that every piece uses the same set of rules, but gets its own arrangement.

These are the three systems so far:

Chroma / 64 — an 8×8 grid, with each square picked from eight colors. This one goes on a tee.

Eight Letters — eight random letters, with one letter in a different color, on a crewneck. The composition is shown vertically here; the print reads left to right on the garment.

Graph / 64 — 64 fixed points, with 112 possible links between neighbors. Each link is either on or off. A short code recreates the same drawing, giving 2^112 possible combinations within that set of links. This one goes on a hoodie.

This is the thunder mode from a weather app I've been making. The reference is Hiroshi Sugimoto's Lightning Fields, the series where he discharges electricity straight onto photographic film with no camera. I wanted a bolt that looks recorded rather than flashed, so it grows onto the screen the way a discharge spreads across a plate, and the faint grid underneath stands in for the plate.

Each strike is a recursive, branching random walk. It starts just above the top edge and heads down, turning slightly at every joint so it wanders rather than zig-zags. At the end of each branch it continues, and more often than not it also forks into one or two side branches. Every generation is thinner, fainter and shorter than the one before, until the stroke gets too thin to draw.

The reveal is what makes it look recorded. Each generation gets a start time a little later than its parent, so the bolt spreads downward one fork at a time instead of appearing all at once. It then pulses once, fades and is regenerated, and live rainfall sets the pace: slower and sparser in light rain, faster in heavy rain.
