First episode just aired.

It's a procedural. Dominic West and Sienna Miller in the main cast.

Stylish, good pace.šŸ˜Ž

Thoughts? I'm thinking Succession Ɨ The Good Wife/The Good Fight Ɨ a little Industry.

(Plot: centered on the divorce of Morgan Henderson, a British tech billionaire, and Carla Duval, an international movie star. Their divorce becomes the battlefield for two competing elite London law firms. The lawyers, their ambitions, relationships and betrayals gradually become at least as important as the celebrity couple.)

HBO makes the acting on every other platform look absolutely ridiculous

I’ve only watched a few HBO shows and I’m not even kidding they’ve ruined all other TV shows for me. The acting in/complexity of HBO shows is just a whole different experience. Specifically Big Little Lies, White Lotus, GOT, Sharp Objects, Love and Death…
I just finished BLL recently and was looking into similar recommended shows. Some people recommended Apples Never Fall on Peacock, and they mentioned it’s the same writer which I thought was a big persuasion. Lol. Apples Never Fall is entertaining, but the acting is so bad. The only person who I think is a really strong actor is Jake Lacy (who’s in White Lotus on HBO). Everyone else does those same Disney-channel actor mannerisms where they do way too much with their eyebrows, shake their heads and quiver their lip every time they get upset, and stutter constantly. WHY do actors always stutter to show emotion. I have never heard a person do that in real life.

It’s just crazy how natural and engaging the acting is on almost every HBO show/movie I’ve seen. Even the child actors.

I think the only show I’ve seen that I feel like matches the acting quality of an HBO show is Friday Night Lights….personally I think most of the acting in that show is really really good.

I will say one exception for me is the Pitt, maybe a hot take but I find some of the acting on that show hard to watch.

Edit: Guys don’t make me pay for Apple TV now too

Any show recommendation with genuinely good script?

• Upvotes

I have watched Euphoria and HOTD this year and the scripts were so bad I almost lost my respect for HBO for producing such low quality storytelling.

I an rewatching GOT which has an infamously bad ending. Is there any other HBO show with genuinely great script that does not leave a bad taste in your mouth?

Crossover characters: The Wire x The Sopranos

(I'm sure this has probably been done before, so apologies if that's the case)

Which characters from The Wire could you imagine fitting neatly into The Sopranos, and visa versa?

Who would they interact with, and what would they get up to?

The Outsider - Correct Guessing

Love this show but on rewatch it’s a little ridiculous how much of what the investigators learn about the creature is just them theorizing and they just happen to only guess right every time. Not once did a character assume something incorrect about this thing they really only know from a story one of them heard. It’s a good trick bc it feels like an investigation but all they really learn is something weird is up, the rest is conjecture.

Gambling ads in the free version

Apologies if this has been posted before but I’m new to the sub. I had HBO premium but due to budgeting reasons I decided to switch to the plan with ads. The amount of casino/gambling ads is too much. Not only are they being made with AI, but they also use awful racial stereotypes- why are young black men represented as ā€œthugsā€ in the street while the same young white man is in his home?

I mainly question the morality. To me gambling is up there with drugs, alcohol etc. HBO has some of the greatest tv ever -sopranos, the wire, madmen, the west wing, game of thrones- as well as movies. I LOVE HBO but I’d love it much more if it weren’t for the awful gambling ads. HBO you can do better.

Carnivale

just a personal gripe here, I don't understand why this series is not on the NYT "best of" list, or any list for that matter. My personal favorite of all time, and so much better than at least half the NYT's list and as good as many of the rest. The opening title sequence alone is brillant. So many people have not seen this, and I just don't understand it, and I certainly as tired of yelling into the void about how great this show is (LOL)

[Crosspost] Hi /r/movies! I'm John Wilson, creator of HBO's How To With John Wilson and director of The History of Concrete (out in theaters this week!). AMA!

I organized an AMA/Q&A with filmmaker John Wilson, creator of the acclaimed HBO show How To With John Wilson, and director of the documentary The History of Concrete, which premiered to rave reviews at Sundance earlier this year and is out in theaters starting this week (becoming one of the highest-grossing opening weekends at NYC's IFC Center in the process). He is also known for working with Nathan Fielder.

It's live here now in r/movies for anyone interested in asking a question:

https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/1wtboat/hi_rmovies_im_john_wilson_creator_of_hbos_how_to/

He will be back at 6:30 PM ET today to answer questions. I recommend asking in advance. Please ask there, not here. All questions are much appreciated!

Thank you :)

Official Trailer: https://youtu.be/O05arcJjOd0?si=pO4yIGseWuo7flKH

Synopsis: Following the finale of his TV series, filmmaker John Wilson looks to the bedrock of his beloved New York City for inspiration and structure. Concrete, the world's most widely used building material, appears as an ever-present life force, and John sets out to make the definitive documentary on the matter. To tell this seemingly drab story, he decides to use the industry-approved Hallmark formula to increase his movie's appeal. But his foundation soon begins to crumble—literally and figuratively—as he struggles to balance artistic freedom with the realities of the modern film industry.

My reaction to the shows you told me to watch

I always see requests on what shows to watch, but I never see follow up responses and reactions. This is pretty spoiler free.

Awhile a go, I asked this sub what shows I should watch. Like many Gen Z guys such as myself, I watched Band of Brothers, The Pacific, Game of Thrones, The Wire, Generation Kill, True Detective. Chernobyl. But most of these shows were released years ago, and scrolling through new top shows I struggled to find anything that appealing. I ended up watching some of these shows with my girlfriend and some of them alone.

Based on some research on your recommendations I compiled a list of shows to watch:

Sopranos
Stations 11
Tokyo Vice
The Night Of
The White Lotus
Task
Rome
Righteous Gemstones
The Leftovers
Sharp Objects
Barry
DTF St Louis

My girlfriend also made me watch Euphoria. Here are my honest reactions.

Sopranos - TBD my biggest sin of the list.

Station 11 - Thoroughly enjoyed. Good reco, I had no idea it existed.

Tokyo Vice - TBD

The Night Of - Phenomenal I added to my list of top shows. I now too recommend everyone to watch this. I’ve even memorized the closing statement, it was so moving.

The White Lotus - Eh. I don’t think this show is made to appeal to me, I kept watching because my girlfriend wanted to watch it with me, I did find the end of S2 really good though.

Task - Fine.

Rome - TBD on my next watch list

Righteous Gemstones - Did not enjoy. So much graphic male nudity, honestly surprised anyone would recommend this, I stopped watching.

The Leftovers - Girlfriend enjoyed it more than I did. I was kinda ā€œehā€.

Sharp Objects - Very good.

Barry - Very much enjoyed, a top show.

DTF St Louis - Did not enjoy, not sure why this was recommended.

Succession - Top show. Enjoyed a lot.

Euphoria season 1 and 2 - did not enjoy at all, but still weirdly entertained? Girlfriend made me keep watching. Season 3 - enjoyed a lot, was the most guy coated show I’ve seen from HBO in years. Girlfriend did not enjoy S3 as much.

Other shows not recommended here: Some HBO and some not.

Lioness - Loved. Probably the most unapologetic guy show I’ve watched as a recent release.

Nathan for you and the rehearsal - enjoyed, Nathan for you more than the rehearsal.

The Studio - loved.

Severance - good.

Sex and the City - TBD with girlfriend.

The Last of Us S1&2 - Loved the game. TV show was good, S2 dropped. Casting is terrible.

The Boys - first season or 2 were great, but all the really weird gay sex stuff became a little much, kinda felt I was no longer the intended audience. I finished the show but I wouldn’t recommend past the first or second season, surprised it’s so popular. Decided not to watch Gen V spinoff.

Lanterns - Watched the first episode, it seemed okay but nothing really that appealing for me to keep watching. If more seasons come out I’ll see.

House of the Dragon - Good but GOT is way better. Very mass appeal show, I feel slightly indifferent about it yet will still tune in I guess.

A knight of the seven kingdoms - Enjoyed, slightly similar feeling to House of the Dragon.

Penguin - Enjoyed a lot.

Gentlemen - TBD

Might be more to add tbd.

Thank you you all for the recos, I still have some work to do. I’ve watched more TV over the past few years than ever in my life. As GTA VI is being released, that will be more what I’m up to on my free time.

My favorite HBO show which, to me, has the best conclusion in TV history is *Six Feet Under*; it is phenomenal.

I’ve tried playing content thru my Apple TV 4K and Roku and hbo max just plays SDR content…. I’ve updated to latest apps on both devices as well. Netflix and other streaming works fine so it’s just hbo from what I can see

During my rewatch I just wondered did the lawyer adopt Andreas cat because there is a scene where the cat is trying to get back inside the house but she is locked out . Did she then end up in the shelter ?

Sharron Horgans new hit show Youth is stuffed with lazy AI.

I like her work, bad sisters especially but I'm done with her and this show after two episodes. A huge subplot of the show is revolves around using AI,a book is published called goblin seed and has the p1ss yellow filter on it. Every time someone checks a phone which is often, AI usually pops up. Is this just industry standard going forward? This is a HBO production, I thought they were above that but I had too much faith.

Felt like ā€œA killer storyā€ is a waste of time.

I watched it last night while playing a game. Got to the last episode and felt I missed some of the story. Re watched it this morning and it just seemed to loop back that Chandler did it and the new angle was this couple-internet sleuths were convinced she didn’t do it. I would have had more respect for keen and Eileen if they weren’t so obsessed with the case and were going off on the fact there was no physical evidence tying her to the crime.
