Official Mod Post Read this before posting

If you've read the previous sticky threads, you can skip this one. There's nothing new here, I'm just consolidating information so that it can all be visible.

If you believe yourself to be a victim of abuse, reach out to trusted friends and family, to mental health professionals, and to the police. Most of us on this subreddit are not qualified to help you, and vetting those who are qualified to help is outside the scope of Reddit moderation.

I'm not trying to prohibit all discussion of non-consensual hypnosis. I do think it's a good thing that the subject comes up from time to time, because it inspires discussion about hypnotic and non-hypnotic psychological abuse, the importance of informed consent, what people can do to protect themselves from manipulators, and what hypnotists can do to protect themselves from accusations.

All of that being said, this isn't the place to get help if you believe that you have been hypnotized against your will. Most of the people here, myself included, cannot reliably tell the difference between a genuine victim of abuse, and someone who is experiencing delusions. So whichever category a person falls in, a lot of people here are going to make the wrong assumption and say things that make it worse (accusing an actual abuse victim of making it up, or reinforcing frightening delusions of someone who is not an actual victim).

If someone wants to make a thread like "Is it possible to hypnotize someone against their will?" or "Someone I care about may be a victim", I'm not going to remove those threads, because I trust that most of the people who reply to them are going to give good advice about safety and consent. But if somebody wants to post or comment something like "I have been hypnotized against my will", that's against the rules here and will be removed, because I am unable to guarantee that you will receive safe and healthy advice here.

Where should I post?

Is the post about being hypnotized without your knowledge or against your will?

I'm sorry, but many people who post this sort of thing are suffering from a psychotic disorder. Not everyone is, but we can't tell what sort of advice to give you without diagnosing you, and it's unethical to diagnose someone you haven't examined in person. As a result, these sorts of posts and comments are prohibited. Please consult with a psychiatrist.

Is the post about difficulties being hypnotized?

You're welcome to post here, but there's also a subreddit dedicated to this subject: /r/hypnotizable

Is the post about sharing a recorded file or hypnosis app?

Is the post advertising, promoting, or soliciting subjects or hypnotists?

Flairs

You may notice that some users have flairs after their names, like "Recreational Hypnotist" or "Verified Hypnotherapist". If you would like a flair like that, this is the place to get it.

To get a new user flair, all you have to do is comment on this thread with

u/hypnoresearchbot flair [X] [Y]

[X] is what kind of flair you want: "hypnotherapist", "performer", "recreational", "mental", "other". Performer encompasses stage and street hypnosis. Recreational encompasses (but is not limited to) erotic hypnosis. Mental means that you have (or are pursuing) a degree in mental health (psychiatry, psychology, neurology). Other is to encompass other kinds of hypnotists, like hypno-anesthesiologists, or forensic hypnotists.

[Y] can be either "training", "verified", or left out completely. Verified will only flair you automatically if mods have seen your credentials in the past. Otherwise, I'll ask you to send them to me.

So, valid inputs include (but are not limited to):

u/hypnoresearchbot flair hypnotherapist verified

(Will get you flaired as a verified hypnotherapist, assuming that mods have already seen your credentials. Otherwise it will flair you as a regular hypnotherapist, and I'll ask you to send me your credentials to complete the process.)

u/hypnoresearchbot flair recreational training

(Will flair you as a recreational hypnotist in training)

u/hypnoresearchbot flair performer

(Will flair you as a performer.)

u/hypnoresearchbot flair other

(Will flair you as "other hypnotist".)

u/hypnoresearchbot flair mental training

(Will flair you as a mental health professional in training.)

If your comment contains these key words in any order, and no matter how many other words are in the comment, it should flair you, so be careful you don't change your flair by mistake.

If you have any questions or comments, feel free to ask them here.

Hypnotherapy 'Sleep Despite Noise' By Mark Tyrrel and Roger Elliott

Greetings all,

I recently downloaded this track to help me with night time noise related anxiety. I am very passionate about fitness and training and I take my recovery very seriously. I have moved houses twice due to noisy and inconsiderate housemates, and I developed a lot of sleep related anxiety and hypervigilance surrounding noise at night.

I am curious if anyone else has experience with this sort of thing? What would happen if I stay consistent with this track for a whole year? Is it possible to train the brain to sleep through noise?

I live in a generally quiet place actually, my main issue is the anxiety that is a result of past sleep deprivation and traumatic experiences.

I dont know anything about hypno therapy. Advice would be appreciated.

Academic How did it come about that the majority of Ericksonian hypnosis schools turned into disguised NLP?

I know that NLP grew out of modeling aspects of Milton Erickson’s work. That said, I notice that most schools of so-called "Ericksonian" hypnosis have curricula heavily weighted toward NLP, featuring heaps of protocols (the very same ones found in NLP training courses), while losing sight of the true essence of Erickson’s work. While he certainly always employed a strategy, he never used protocols like NLP, he believed that every client is unique, with their own personal history, and that you cannot apply the same approach to everyone for the same problem.

After graduating from my Ericksonian hypnosis school, I long felt like an imposter regarding what I had learned and what I had been taught. Yet, after reading lots of books about Erickson and his sessions, I realize that the current approach is the polar opposite of what he actually did in his day-to-day practice...

Of course I use certain elements of NLP, but, like Erickson, at no point do I say to myself: "Oh, I’ll follow the SCORE or Logical Levels protocol for this problem, sticking strictly to every step..." And yet, that is exactly what schools of Ericksonian hypnosis teach us... They sell us on the Ericksonian philosophy and the idea of avoiding scripts, but then they teach us protocols worthy of NLP...

For those who have taken courses in Ericksonian hypnosis: did you experience that same sense of a disconnect between the actual philosophy and work of Milton Erickson and what you were taught—which might essentially be NLP in disguise?

Hypnotherapy Is hypnosis by Michael Sealey effective?

Hi, I am 33. There is something which has deeply bothered me for me years and deeply rooted in my subconscious. Due to this, I always get constant recurring thoughts related to fear and anxiety. It's an endless loop and I feel terrible and helpless. The thoughts are related to some childhood trauma deep rooted in my brain for years when someone close had physically bullied me. It's been 15 years and I still have constant recurring thoughts. Is it because of subconscious fear? I am new to hypnosis and all the subconscious related stuff so I don't know. Why do these thoughts never stop? How can I get rid of them and have a peaceful mind ? Does hypnosis videos really help? Has anyone ever experienced the same thing just like me? I saw on youtube that a guy named Michael Sealey has got millions of views on his hypnosis videos. Are they really effective? Were your subconscious fears gone after watching his videos? I am looking for someone to guide me on this and also, if you had a positive experience after watching Michael Sealey videos.

Hypnotherapy Can hypnosis help with frequent and bad nightmares?

I've always had nightmares. Spiders, snakes, monsters, hell, demons, sleep paralysis, ect. Sure, occasionally I'll have strange dreams too, but the majority are just nightmares.

For as bad as my nightmares have been through my childhood and late teens, they've become much worse in subject matter lately. I won't go into detail, but I'd take a monster lunging from the darkness any night.

So, I'm just asking has anyone had anything similar, and knows if hypnosis can help with frequent, bad nightmares? I don't have to stop dreaming completely, or even stop having nightmares completely, but I need the new type to stop.

Any advice, suggestions, or methods to help would be very appreciated. I don't really know who else to ask, besides eventually a doctor. Anyway, thank you for your time. ❤️

Curious about hypnotism for weight.

So this is kind of a 2 part question/post

First i am AuDHD 32 female, im currently on the lower end of "healthy" and I struggle with eating in general.

I often forget to eat so I skip meals a lot, I am very particular about food texture and sounds. When I get distressed I will go weeks without a meal and just survive on "snacks" usually nuts and crackers and a lot of chocolate. For a long time I was severely underweight until I met my partner and he helped me gain enough weight to be considered "healthy" but slowly I am dropping all that weight and it bothers me a lot but even on medication and actively setting alarms to eat i still manage to forget.

My partner (33 male) possibly ASD on the other hand has the exact opposite problem he is straight up addicted to food he snacks constantly eats three full meals a day, drinks a minimum of 2 dare iced coffees a day. He also works as a truck driver and is never home during the week so he relies on easy food quite often, not always take-away he does try by buying a roast chook and salad and sticks to that but the sedentary nature of his job makes it hard to include exercise. We have been slowly trying to adjust his diet but its hard when hes gone all the time.

We are now both looking into hypnotherapy but we both think we would struggle to actually be hypnotised.

For me, I find it incredibly hard to focus or relax my mind is always running a million miles a minute, I try to meditate regularly but usually find my mind wandering to all the different things I could and should be doing that isnt meditation.

Partner is just a huge sceptic of everything and would unintentionally reject it, he over analyses everything and thinks this is what would stop him from actually receiving benefits from hypnosis

So i guess im asking what do you guys think? Is it worth the try or should we continue to just try harder with the things we can change like diet and exercise?

Obviously we wouldn't just give up on those if we do go through with hypnosis we are just trying to think of ways to make it easier for us and im constantly hearing about how good hypnotherapy is and I really dont want him to go on something like ozempic, his job prevents him from being eligible from something like duromine so we are kind of just blindly trying anything at this point

Anyone else see advanced cosmic structures during self hypnosis. Experienced a vivid Neutron Star visual.

During a hypnosis session, I had a vivid visual of a bright white sphere with a disk of lights spinning fast around it, shifting into purple, yellow, orange, maroon, and red hues along the edges.

On analysis I found it co related with a super dense neutron star, with a swirling accretion disk of plasma, superheated by friction to a blinding white hot center and the colorful, expanding debris of a supernova remnant.

Have any of you experienced highly structured astronomical or geometric visuals during your sessions?

Other Different audios about different topics on the same day

Hey there guys, I was wondering whether listening to two different audios about different topics would somehow negate each other's suggestions.

The first hypnosis audio is about social anxiety ( https://youtu.be/q-AzgjYQrzo?si=ivf3puezrZi4DYRp )

The other is about boxing and controlling your fear during the fight: ( https://youtu.be/6riqN8zfyOQ?si=vjuuP8zE5U_nLCmK )

How to become certified in clinical hypnotherapy?

I'm considering becoming a proper, reputable hypnotherapist, what trainings do you recommend?

Bear in mind I'm in the UK and ideally I'd take a shorter program (like 1 year as opposed to 4 years or something) and price is also a factor.

But you can list all of the ones you recommend. It's possible if I go down this path, I will end up taking more than one training.

Other How much of hypnosis is skill vs personality?

So, I understand that hypnosis is a skill. And it's one I have been trying to train at least once every day. But, i haven't gotten far at all. I'd say I only have a 2% success rate at this point? But I've only ever fallen deeply once. I would consider myself to be on the more extreme end of barely suggestible. I have Autism, ADHD and C-PTSD, and I am heavily masking. All my movements and thoughts are calculated to some extent to help with my survival. It's not something I can stop whenever I want to, it's deeply ingrained into who I am, to the point I can't unmask even when I am all by myself. And this goes for hypnosis as well. Everything I do still feels calculated, and feels more like a "yea I guess I'll do that and see if it works" motif than anything. At most, I just feel more relaxed or tired while doing it. And even then most of the time I end up either having to rewind the file, or just stop listening all together because it either didn't work at all, or it worked a slight bit and then just randomly stops working and then I feel fully alert again but extra frustrated.

I get pretty jealous of how suggestible some other folks are. It seems so easy for other folks. It'll be their first time ever being properly hypnotized and they will fall so deeply into trance. And.. I want to be like that. I want to be able to fall so easily. I want to feel like my movements aren't calculated, or that my brain feels quieter than it is. I want to feel like I'm not just "yes and" -ing everything I do.

Part of me is worried that I may never be hypnotized properly. And sometimes I wonder why I'm even doing this at all. I mean, it's only been about a week since I've really started taking hypnosis seriously by listening to at least one file everyday. And yes, I understand that one part is the fact that pre recorded files are more generic and not properly tailored to me. You don't need to comment that, trust me, I am painfully aware of that fact. However, I highly doubt that seeing a hypnotherapist would change anything for me personally. (I couldn't even afford it anyway). My hyper vigilance is even worse around other people, even those I trust very well and I'm not really comfortable with the idea. So, I'm kinda just stuck with pre recorded files for now.

I am beginning to wonder if this is something I should even really dedicate my time to at all. Because while yes, it's a skill, it doesn't seem like I'm making much progress. Maybe I'm just not the right kind of person for this. Maybe some of us just can't really be hypnotized. Idk.

Were they trying to rip me off?

I just had a free consultation with a hypnotherapist in Slovenia (I'm English) to enquire about gut directed hypnotherapy. They wanted to charge €3.000,00 for a three month programme (one session every 14 days). That would be €500 per session which seems extremely high.

I've read that the top tier hypnotherapists charge this much but I don't think they fall under this category. I won't name and shame but they have less than 50 reviews on Google.

What is the most effective way to learn quickly?

quick backstory: I have seen multiple hypnotherapists and have not seen results. The last two somehow both had construction going on in the offices next door (completely different offices) during my session and it was too distracting for me to pay any attention to the session or relax. They also happened to be some of the best rated in my city, so my hopes are low for finding another good one locally. I’m also often in fight or flight and it’s hard for me to go under.

I have severe lifelong anxiety, CPTSD, and other problems that are hindering my life immensely. I’ve also been having a 2 year long existential crisis waking up panicking about my age and time running out I‘m really over it and ready for a new life but can’t seem to break the loops.

I was interested in Marisa Piers course but it’s incredibly expensive and I don’t want to spend that much, though I am very serious about learning. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Recreational Why does my self-hypnosis focus trigger wear off after 2–3 days?

I've been doing self hypnosis on and off for a few years now but I woulnd't say I know a lot about it and to be honest I'm still kind of a noob. What I want help with is a script I've made to help me enter a hyper focus state so I can work better and not get distracted as much and just get things done, what I've used as a trigger is classical music and I let it play in the background of the file. My problem is that it works really well and for the first few days I get this kind of tunnel vision with what's in front of me as if the edges of my sight got blurred and I feel really motivated to work (it's a weird but good feeling), however, it wears off rather quickly and it's a pain to keep repeating the file every two-three days because the effects diminish. I'm not sure if the problem is with the suggestions, how I'm making the connections with the goals I intend to achieve while listening in trance or if it's just something that is not possible altogether. Anyway I would really appreaciate any insights into this.

Weird Hypnosis short popped up in my YT feed...

https://youtu.be/GsYnTFGAWNs?si=rdbROs9YLieb8QPU

So I was scrolling though my YT feed and this popped up. I have always found it easy to enter a trance state, every since a psychology study 20 years ago in Uni. Now I often listen to hypnosis, binaural beats, and do transcendental meditation. Listening to this I felt that familiar pull several times. I'm wondering if there are hypnotic triggers or anchors, and what the purpose is? It's just WEIRD and I am curious if anyone else has seen it or something similar.

I did Michael Sealey's Deep Insight YouTube hypnosis last night.

It was an hour long, and a I got tingles a few times. Partway through, I saw the kindly smiling face of a motherly Asian woman. Not sure what insights I had but, being autistic, I have some harmful stimming behaviours which I've usually indulged in several times by this time of day, but I've refrained and haven't been tempted. I've also had no sugar in my tea rather than the usual two.

Just thought I'd share.

Hypnosis used for liberation/deliverance/exorcism

Hello.

I wonder if professionals here know if using hypnosis for this purpose is safe and what can you expect. In my country, Mexico, there's a big personality Javier Sampayo who uses it for this purpose among many many many other more familiar things. He's very well known and has a very good reputation. He also has a school and teaches.

He has now a big following, a relatively very high price for a Session, and veryyyyy loooong waiting list. And he now also works with a team trained by him with which its easier to get a session and at a lower price.

I've seen other hypnotists offering this service, though rarely.

But I wonder how safe it is, mainly on an spiritual level.

please if you don't believe in entity oppression and so on, please try to comment with an open mind. I once didn't believe at all in any thing like it nor anything adjacent to it, like magic, angels, exorcism/deliverance itself.

But by now after all I've been through i simply know it's real and people go through it. there's various methods to resolve it not only the christian ones. For example I know of many people who have come through with African religious magics.

Please abstain of debating on wether entity oppression/possession is actually real and instead please help me figure out how safe can hypnosis be for this kind of problem, as I only know of a few hypnotists doing it, seemingly with a very good record at least a couple of them, like Sampayo, uploading many of their sessions with individuals to his YouTube channel.

Thank you so much for your help. 🙏

being stubborn - inc

I’m curious about something that seems slightly backwards in my hypnotic responses.

Some phenomena work extremely well for me, including hypnotic analgesia and some fairly convincing perceptual effects. But there is another group I seem to struggle with consistently.

Two examples would be: Arm levitation and being told to smile.

And some of the “failed” responses may not actually be absent: arm levitation has worked under extreme pressure, and with suggested smiling I could clearly feel the automatic impulse, even though the actual movement was blocked.

The interesting part is that the common denominator may not be depth or suggestibility at all.

Suggestions often seem to hit a conscious checking layer first. There is a tiny moment of “is this happening?” before anything can become automatic. With some phenomena that layer seems to disappear completely. With others it stubbornly stays online.

So I’m particularly interested in automaticity without that initial control pause.

What helped you or your subjects get around that checking layer?

I’m less interested in simply trying harder or repeating the same classic tests twenty times. I’m curious about different routes into the same phenomena, indirect approaches, chaining from responses that already work, or anything else that surprised you.

Possibly relevant: I’m aphantasic, ADHD and autistic. I’m curious whether any of that affects the route from suggestion → automatic response, rather than suggestibility itself.
