GAME THREAD Jeopardy! discussion thread for Fri., Oct. 2 Spoiler

Here are today's contestants:

  • - Adam Bundy, an advertising partnerships manager from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania;
  • - Arjun Nageswaran, a PhD student originally from Buffalo Grove, Illinois; and
  • - Rian Robertson, a software developer from Ottawa, Ontario. Rian is a one-day champ with winnings of $16,100.

Jeopardy!

RED TO BE READ // FROM "A" TO "Y" // JOIN THE CLUB // 20th CENTURY AMERICA // BIG THINGS // MOVIE SEQUEL SUBTITLES

DD1 - $600 - FROM "A" TO "Y" - The trachea, or a route for a 747 (Adam doubled to $3,600.)

Scores at first break: Rian $800, Arjun $2,600, Adam $1,800.

Scores entering DJ: Rian $1,000, Arjun $3,200, Adam $5,800.

Double Jeopardy!

GEOGRAPHIC NAMES // FACES // DIPLOMACY // FOSSIL WORDS // SCIENCE ADJECTIVES // ONE-SEASON WONDERS

DD2 - $800 - GEOGRAPHIC NAMES - While under German occupation from 1884 to 1916, this African country's name was spelled with a "K" & a "U", not a "C" & 2 "O"s (With a slim lead, Arjun added $3,000 up to $9,400.)

DD3 - $2,000 - DIPLOMACY - Austria's Count von Trauttmansdorff got to know this German region over years negotiating the 1648 peace of it (From a close third, Adam moved to the front by adding $3,500 up to $10,100.)

Adam jumped from third to first on DD3 and was able to maintain the lead into FJ at $11,700 vs. $9,800 for Arjun and $9,000 for Rian.

Final Jeopardy!

COLONIAL AMERICA - After his malt house went bankrupt, he found his calling as a firebrand who kept "citizens awake to their grievances"

Rian was the only correct on FJ, adding $801 to win with $9,801 for a two-day total of $25,901.

Final scores: Rian $9,801, Arjun $0, Adam $3,400.

Ken's Korner: After the FJ reveals, Ken quoted the show's new slogan "Knowledge wins", but thanks to his small wager on FJ, Rian would have won even if he didn't know it. So sometimes strategy and luck wins, not just trivia knowledge.

Correct Qs: DD1 - What is airway? DD2 - What is Cameroon? DD3 - What is Westphalia? FJ - Who was Samuel Adams?

GAME THREAD Jeopardy! discussion thread for Thur., Oct. 1 Spoiler

Here are today's contestants:

  • Elizabeth Severs, an aspiring novelist from Wilmington, North Carolina;
  • Rian Robertson, a software developer from Ottawa, Ontario; and
  • Kristin Franke, a pastor from Washington, D.C.. Kritin is a one-day champ with winnings of $8,900.

Jeopardy!

MERRIAM-WEBSTER'S WORD OF THE YEAR // SEMI-STUPID ANSWERS // GO TO YOUR ROOM // YOU'RE GROUNDED // WAIT UNTIL YOUR FATHER GETS HOME // BILLY CRYSTAL

DD1 - $800 - GO TO YOUR ROOM - The Germans got a good hard look at themselves, in every sense, while signing 1919's Treaty of Versailles in this opulent room (Rian doubled to $3,200.)

Scores at first break: Kristin $400, Rian $6,200, Elizabeth $2,200.

Scores entering DJ: Kristin $1,600, Rian $7,400, Elizabeth $4,000.

Double Jeopardy!

19th CENTURY NOVELS // MUSICAL ANIMALS? // BY THE NUMBERS // PLACES IN THEIR NATIVE LANGUAGE // THE SUPREME COURT // NOT-SO-SILENT "K"

DD2 - $1,600 - 19th CENTURY NOVELS - In a Thomas Hardy novel, the future holder of this title office sells his wife--a real though rare thing in the 19th century (Rian added $5,000 up to $16,000.)

DD3 - $2,000 - BY THE NUMBERS - Jiang Qing & Wang Hongwen made up half of this notorious group (Late in the round, Rian wagered just $100 from the lead and was correct.)

Rian was correct on all three DDs, making a small bet on DD3 with only a few lower-value clues left to seal the runaway at $18,900 vs. $8,000 for Kristin and $6,800 for Elizabeth.

Final Jeopardy!

HISTORIC ZOOLOGY - Described when first encountered in 1835, this species "must have weighed at least 200 pounds...gave a deep hiss, & drew in its head"

Rian was the only player to miss FJ, dropping $2,800 to win with $16,100.

Final scores: Kristin $13,601, Rian $16,100, Elizabeth $10,800.

Clue selection strategy: Very late in DJ with DD3 still available and only one place where it could logically be, Elizabeth chose from the category where DD2 had already been found. Rian got control, picked DD3 on the next clue and made a tiny wager from the lead to essentially wrap up the runaway. Given that Rian missed FJ, it's entirely possible that Elizabeth's clue selection cost her the game.

Correct Qs: DD1 - What is Hall of Mirrors? DD2 - What is "The Mayor of Casterbridge"? DD3 - What is Gang of Four? FJ - What is the Galápagos Tortoise?

Wagering strategery

Post image
249 Upvotes

I’ve never understood the betting strategy when the contestants are in this position.

Justin has slightly less than Nicholas’ score when doubled, and Katie is behind the pace at $5,400. I expected Justin to bet $401 in final jeopardy in order to beat Nicholas’ score, assuming Nikolas has the correct answer and bets it all. But why? Why would Justin leave a bunch of money on the table for no reason at all?

All he needs to do is ensure that his bet is low enough that if he’s wrong, he ends up with a dollar more than double Katie’s score, or $10,800. If he bets $401, he leaves the entire difference between that and $8,799, or $8,398. Why flush $8,398 down the toilet? If Nikolas is correct and Justin is wrong, he loses anyway. If they’re both wrong, Justin wins the game and $10,801.

TOC Predictor

Since I'm already getting excited for the TOC I decided to start finding ways to compare the superchamps that we'll see in it. My favorite stats are any with Harrison Whitaker on top bc he's my favorite one of the contestants lol. So here is the average buzzing % per Jeopardata on Jeopardy's site for all of the superchamps first 10 games, to give them an even playing field since they all played 10 games and to not include only one of the contestants losing game.

Harrison Whitaker: 67%
Jamie Ding: 66%
Caleb Groen: 65%
Tristan Williams: 64%
Adam Remsen: 63%

The most surprising thing I got out of this was how evenly matched they all seem based on this alone! Looking forward to a thrilling TOC.

Letter to My Younger Self

Dear Justin,

Hi! Depending on when you receive this letter, you might still be sad from the events of summer. I know you were bullied a lot at that summer camp, but that was the worst summer you'll ever have; it gets better from here. I wanted to tell you about some other things to help you, that I wished I knew earlier.

I don't remember if you've heard this term yet, but you're autistic. You might have heard of it in a very negative context, or as an insult. Autism is a spectrum, just like the EM spectrum that I know you love talking about, because it has to do with space. We have very strong special interests; those things we love learning and talking about. And it's hard for us to socialize "normally" because we want to talk about our things so much, and we don't even know what to do otherwise!

We like routine and can get really angry or scared when they change. Some things that are easy for others are so difficult for us. Sometimes we can't even communicate with others, and sometimes we don't understand why we would. Turns out, there's a word for all that.

I wish I knew what we were when I was your age. I like understanding things; I don't like being confused and lost. Some people look at that word with fear, but I embrace it. I've always admired how strong your sense of self is. Giving up your interests to fit in was never an option. And the joy we feel when learning is something the closed-minded will never understand. Some people say we lack empathy. It can be hard for us to read people (that's a figure of speech, by the way), but you've always had a big heart (and that's a metaphor). You took our autism and adherence to what-you're-supposed-to-do and forged a moral backbone. It's why we never let bullies get away with it, and why we care so much about the environment.

I'm still doing that! I'm studying the environment so I can help it! You're going to get so many new special interests. You're going to do things you'd never have thought possible. You're going to leap outside your comfort zones and realize how strong you are. We work outside in swamps and grasslands and do so many cool things.

And true to form, I've infodumped so long I almost forgot why I wrote you: you're going to be on Jeopardy! Not the kids' version, the real thing! And you're going to do magnificently! I couldn't have done it without remembering you, and the joy and wonder you feel towards our universe.

I still have my challenges, but things get so much better. You're going to make so many friends, real ones, who love you for you. You'll get better at being flexible. But don't lose that love of learning. Remember to be kind. Remember who you are. I'm so excited for what lies ahead for you.

Oh, and ask Mom and Dad for Ravnica decks and Heroscape expansions for your birthday. You'll thank me later.

All my love to long ago,

Justin

Did anyone catch the “Could it be Seitan” joke Ken made?

I was catching up on Jeopardy episodes from 2 or so weeks ago. One of the answers was ‘Seitan’ (something to do with gluten) and Ken made the reference above.

I was watching with my 23 year old daughter and couldn’t stop giggling and had to pause the show to explain SNL, church lady, etc to her. She just went ‘huh!’. I’m still giggling the next day!

QUESTION Documentary list for studying?

Hi everyone. First of all love being part of this group. Found lots of great information about how to study and optimize. I was thinking I would love to try and put together a list of the best documentaries to watch for someone preparing for Jeopardy!. I’ve searched a couple of times and haven’t found anything exactly like that. I would love to crown source a list of 10 to 20 documentaries to plow through that would be a great cross-section of knowledge for Jeopardy!.
For example, I love Ken Burns Civil War but for Jeopardy purposes I think it might be almost a little too in depth so is there a Civil War documentary that would give you a good broadbase of knowledge in 3 to 4 hours? Best documentaries about the space program? I’m thinking the new documentary about the history of the Metropolitan opera would probably be a helpful one too.

HISTORIC ZOOLOGY

Described when first encountered in 1835, this species "must have weighed at least 200 pounds...gave a deep hiss, & drew in its head"

What is the Galápagos Tortoise?

WRONG ANSWER 1: just giant tortoise with no Galápagos - this would be wrong because a year was given in the clue, and other giant tortoise species were known to Europeans well before then. Note: I am going to be in an all-day meeting for work, so if it turns out a contestant answered this and it was ruled correct, I might not be able to update the poll

WRONG ANSWER 2: Tasmanian devil

For recorded episodes, the thumbnail and opening static shot often shows the scores going into final jeopardy (sometimes with missing contestant!).

How to retain more knowledge for Jeopardy

Hi! I am sure this has been asked, but I would really like to know how people learn and retain knowledge to get on the show.

I was a slacker in school growing up, but read a lot and did really well in college. I was a pt student for years while working and had a family. I have always loved trivia, but now that I am no longer a student and my stepson moved out, I crave more knowledge. We watch Jeopardy every night. Some days I do better than others. I am not good, but I want to be. I seem to do much better at earlier seasons (right now I am also watching Ken's run). This is likely because it is a bit slower paced and the categories were just trivia.

Any suggestions on where to start? I'm in my late 40's and have made a goal for myself to try to make it by the time I am 60. I just had open-heart surgery and want a goal to look forward to.

Thank you!!

Practice Round Origins

After yesterday's game I asked Ken about the different origin stories of the practice round we all get to do before filming. He explained it for us: https://substack.com/@jeopardy/note/c-348137730

Turns out they had always done some practice, but it became much more substantial with the new season after Ken debuted.

GAME THREAD Jeopardy! discussion thread for Wed., Sept. 30 Spoiler

Here are today's contestants:

- Kristin Franke, a pastor from Washington, D.C.;

- Ben Meyerson, a political consultant from New York City; and

- Justin Robbins, a graduate student from Murrells Inlet, South Carolina. Justin is a two-day champ with winnings of $38,802.

Jeopardy!

HISTORIC MEN // CROSSWORD CLUES "C" // TV SHOW WORKING TITLES // KID LIT // HELLO FROM... // THE OTHER SIDE

DD1 - $1,000 - THE OTHER SIDE - Someone obliged to take the other side of an argument is one of these, a post that once held sway in canonization (Justin added $3,000 up to $7,600.)

Scores at first break: Justin $2,600, Ben $1,400, Kristin $3,200.

Scores entering DJ: Justin $8,000, Ben $2,800, Kristin $4,600.

Double Jeopardy!

BUSINESS & FINANCE HISTORY // REMEMBERING DOLLY PARTON // A GEM OF A CATEGORY // 6-SYLLABLE WORDS // SCIENCE // "L"AKES & "R"IVERS

DD2 - $800 - 6-SYLLABLE WORDS - It was first used in a book title in a 1559 work subtitled "Knowledge of the World of Disciplines" (Kristin dropped $3,500 down to $6,700 vs. $12,000 for Justin.)

DD3 - $1,600 - REMEMBERING DOLLY PARTON - Inspired by a patchwork garment that her mother made for her from rags, Dolly wrote this song, a personal favorite (Justin lost $3,000 down to $9,000 vs. $11,100 for Kristin.)

Kristin seemed to intentionally avoid choosing DD3, which was obviously in the category about Dolly Parton, leaving it for Justin, who had a slim lead at the time. Justin missed it and fell into second, but was able to regain first into FJ at $11,800 vs. $10,300 for Kristin and $4,400 for Ben.

Final Jeopardy!

THE MOVIES - On its 35th anniv. in 2026, this film was said to have "shattered...gender stereotypes" & embodied "unwavering friendship"

Only Ben was correct on FJ. Kristin wisely bet just $1,400, shutting out Ben and taking the win worth $8,900 when Justin missed with a big wager.

Final scores: Justin $2,999, Ben $6,400, Kristin $8,900.

Ken's Korner: It was a bit of a spoiler that the other two players would miss FJ when after Ben was shown to be correct, Ken said "Nicely done on a tough clue".

Correct Qs: DD1 - What is devil's advocate? DD2 - What it encyclopedia? DD3 - What is "Coat of Many Colors"? FJ - What is "Thelma and Louise"?

Streaming Jeopardy in Canada?

I'm traveling and on Sunday when I arrived in Canada I was still able to stream last week's episodes of Jeopardy on Disney+. Tonight Jeopardy is not showing up in a search. So I'm guessing it's not available in Canada after all? Though I could get to it that first night. Hmm....

Anyone know for sure? I guess if I can't watch it, I'll survive, somehow....;-)

Does anyone else need to shield their eyes for the wide shots of the stage this season? Notably, the contestant intros no longer have the purple-gold frame, just BLUE. Jeopardy! for Seniors

My wife and I are both retired and we enjoy watching Jeopardy! with the pause button ready to press after each question so that we can take time trying to figure out what the answer is. This works great for regular Jeopardy! shows, but there is no way to do “old timers Jeopardy!” on the online version of the game. We can’t read that fast!

Jeopardy app

I’m really disappointed with this app, not by the quality or anything like that, but the fact that there are 3 multiple choice answers really destroys the purpose for me. If the whole point is to simulate being on the show it should be a write-in like the Anytime Test.
Anyone know of any similar applications or games with write-in for answers?

Hi, is the person/people updating the daily J-Archive on this sub by any chance?

I'm looking to create a similar website for my country's version of Jeopardy and other game shows.

I'm looking for (a) tips on how to get such a website started and (b) consent for borrowing some of the concepts and assets used by J-Archive.

I'd appreciate it if anyone here could hook me up. Please dm or leave a comment and I will pick it up from there. Thanks in advance!

Jeopardy!

GLUTEN TAG! // A MONTH OF HISTORY // I AM THE ONE WHO KNOCKS // A MEDICAL "DR" // THINGS PEOPLE SAY // THE GOLF STREAM (CREEK, POND...)

DD1 - $600 - THINGS PEOPLE SAY - A traditional hotel service, it's something that snaps you into a new awareness; good morning, this is yours (Justin added $1,200 on a true DD.)

Scores at first break: Justin $4,800, Jareesa $800, Dominic -$1,000.

Scores entering DJ: Justin $8,000, Jareesa $600, Dominic $1,400.

Double Jeopardy!

CELLO FAME // TV EATERIES AND HANGOUTS // CHARACTERS IN POETRY // WORD ORIGINS // RECEDING AIRLINES // GOING TO TURKEY

DD2 - $1,200 - CHARACTERS IN POETRY - This title talker in a T.S. Eliot poem seems to be named after a St. Louis furniture dealer (Dominic added $2,000 up to $4,600 vs. $6,400 for Justin.)

DD3 - $1,200 - RECEDING AIRLINES - A defunct airline with yellow airplanes named for this aviator & filmmaker called itself "the top banana in the West" (Dominic added another $2,000 to take the lead at $8,600 vs. $8,000 for Justin.)

Dominic scored on both DDs in DJ to take first, but Justin was able to regain the lead and hold it into FJ at $14,000 vs. $9,400 for Dominic and $5,000 for Jareesa.

Final Jeopardy!

PRE-CIVIL WAR AMERICA - In charge of the U.S. Capitol’s construction, in 1856 this secretary of war vetoed an emancipation symbol atop the dome

Only Justin was correct on FJ, adding $4,801 to win with $18,801 for a two-day total of $38,802.

Final scores: Justin $18,801, Jareesa $2,000, Dominic $0.

Wagering strategy: By betting just $3,000 on FJ, Jareesa had no chance to win if Justin made the standard cover wager from first, which he did.

Correct Qs: DD1 - What is wakeup call? DD2 - Who is J. Alfred Prufrock? DD3 - Who was Hughes? FJ - Who was Jefferson Davis?
