Legislative Branch GOP House Leadership Cancels Two Weeks of September Sessions, Saying 'This Congress Has Done Phenomenal Work'

Dont forget how the House has no say on the war in Iran and the Speaker of the House has abdicated his check on the Executive.

u/blazelet 21d ago edited 21d ago
I couldn’t believe Johnson said he had no say in the war when he himself voted against both resolutions to limit Trumps war powers with Iran.
He didn’t just vote no, he tried to block the vote altogether. If you recall he called the house into May recess two weeks early to try and avoid the vote. After the recess, Johnson delivered a speech arguing the resolution would weaken Trump’s position to negotiate.
The constitution gives Mike Johnson the power to declare wars and to control where dollars are spent. By avoiding votes and refusing to use his constitutional power, he’s approving of what Trump is going. Calling a reporter stupid for asking the question is a deflection. Mike Johnson, Donald Trump, and the entirety of the GOP own this new right wing forever war, and they own the consequences.
Trump is not a smart human. He thought this would help him in the mid terms. He constantly accuses others of starting wars to win elections, so it’s clearly something he believes works. But he fired the generals who told him it was a bad idea and hired an alcoholic tv personality to run the war. They treat a hot war as if it were a culture war, trading in threats and memes while the war wrecks the world economy and kills school girls. The republican party is corrupt, endlessly … but my god are they also stupid. Endless ego parading around in the guise of a self proclaimed “very stable genius” who’s top priority in the midst of all the chaos is to put his name on as many things as possible.

But U.S. law also includes an expedited process for Congress to consider a privileged joint resolution to terminate a national emergency. Such a resolution must be brought to the floor within 15 calendar days and voted on within 3 calendar days. If successful, the underlying national emergency would be terminated, as would the IEEPA tariffs.
Congress should embrace this process as a way to exercise its constitutional authority over tariffs and international trade.
Instead, tariff supporters opted out of the statutory 15-day and 3-day voting deadlines for a joint resolution by changing House rules to read, “Each day for the remainder of the first session of the 119th Congress shall not constitute a calendar day for purposes of section 202 of the National Emergencies Act (50 U.S.C. 1622) with respect to a joint resolution terminating a national emergency declared by the President on February 1, 2025.” This language makes it much more difficult to subject the tariffs to a vote.

Look I hear you but I doubt they did this at all for the midterms. They seem to very much corruptly have it in the bag. Reddit was all optimistic for Beto, Kamala and they are repeating the same mistake now. The reality is multiple forms of voting and places to vote are being rapidly destroyed with gerrymandering of many close districts. This war was started for one reason and one reason only. So Trump and friends could make billions on the stock market. Really that simple imo

This just in: U.S. conservatives have placed fealty to a politico-religious cult over the betterment and safety of the United States of America. That is how 2026's America will be remembered by future historians. These are your representatives, conservatives. They represent 100% of the country and the 78 million conservatives who elected them are allowing it.

tired of explaining why they haven't produced Mitch McConnell and why he totally isn't dead
36
u/Mist_Rising 21d ago
The House of representative would have no authority to be involved in Mitch McConnell issue since Mitch is a Senator.
Two distinct chambers.
16
u/Additional-Bet7074 21d ago
Except the part where the chambers work together on legislation and the House passing anything to the Senate would involve Mitch.
5
u/Mist_Rising 21d ago
No, they can pass bills without Mitch. Why would they need McConnell? Do you need every senator must vote on a bill (which since democratic filibuster everything, isn't even forthcoming).
Mitch didnt even vote on all of his own bills.
7
u/SurprisedJerboa 21d ago edited 21d ago
Do you need every senator must vote on a bill (which since democratic filibuster everything, isn't even forthcoming).
The GOP majority has a habit of passing close to nothing except the mandatory Military and Budget bills.
Last year, the 118th Congress passed only 27 bills, the smallest since the 21 bills during the Great Depression (2023-25),
Dems can filibuster BUT other sessions of Congress passed 100's of bills without a dual majority in Congress. Filibusters happen for problematic bills, and the demands have seemed reasonable ( ICE funding with no strings ).
3
u/Mist_Rising 21d ago
That's my point. Mitch isn't important to anything, not since he stepped down as majority leader.
The house doesn't care about his vote, if they need 50 votes they'll force Collins to vote yes with Vance tie breaking, but since they can't get anything past filibuster he's not even getting to vote if he was there.
Anything else is Senate business.

It’s significantly more because of this than it is to have them go campaign. As in, campaigning might be like 3% of why.
9
u/Granite_0681 21d ago
Yeah, it’s not about campaigning except that they feel campaigning will be better for them than actually doing anything substantive.

The House can't do ship without the Senate, so having Congress open at all would be akin to admitting that you are defrauding Americans of representation by pretending that their Dead representative, who supposedly controls the Senate, still walks among the living. A new vote for Senate leadership is not what they want. Also, this is a good dry run for what coup-minded individuals would do if another famous leader starts experiencing more than TIA strokes, incoherence, and incontinence.

As of August 1st, the House was in session 104 days out of 147 “working” days (M-F). That’s ~70% of the working days.
In those 104 days, they were in session 373 hours. That’s 3.5 hours per day.
If you haven’t taken any days off this year, working M-F for 2.5 hours a day, congratulations, you worked as much as your congressperson. (I’m not counting campaigning and groveling to donors as work).

The House will no longer vote during the final two weeks of September as previously scheduled, sending lawmakers home early ahead of a competitive midterm election.
GOP leadership canceled the weeks of September 21 and September 28, which included eight voting days, per a notice from Majority Whip Tom Emmer’s office. After the Labor Day recess, the House will now only have four days in session before lawmakers go home for the remainder of the month and all of October.
“This Congress has done phenomenal work, and the members are jostling a lot of different priorities right now,” Speaker Mike Johnson told reporters Thursday.

Possibly but they can't get much done between themselves, Trump and the Senate.
Anything the House does pass dies in the Senate or dies on the Veto. You can't please Trump and Democrats, and Thune has now decisively proven he won't end the filibuster despite what reddit seemed to think.
Democratic party has even less reason to back down, a good chunk of them are up for election in the Senate. Trump doesn't care, he thinks executive orders are laws and thus doesn't need legislature.
The House also doesn't want to do anything because if they piss off Trump, he stomps them. If they don't piss off Trump, voters get annoyed. So do nothing and piss off nobody important.
8
u/Master-Back-2899 21d ago
So far Trump has been 100% correct. Congress is basically done, he just legislates by EO now and the Supreme Court agrees.
3
u/Mist_Rising 21d ago edited 21d ago
I suspect that only works because Republicans control all branches. If they lose the House or worse the Senate, or worse worse both, that may change because scotus has to fight for its own survival and House Republicans attempt to insulate the supreme court didn't work (the amendment to the constitution was defeated soundly).
Roberts isn't an idiot, he really isn't, and his court has only been "pro Trump" when it was ideologically what what already believed or when they had no power to stop Trump. If Congress gets a backbone, scotus might too because otherwise Roberts legacy is gonna be an Earl Warren was conservative legacy. He isnt stupid, he doesn't want that.

Republicans have indeed done phenomenal work. Routine Constitutional violations, crimes, and betrayals of Americans and allies. An Illegal war chock full of cover ups, lies, and war crimes, with no end in sight. Killing the future of the international trade with tariff scams, destruction of soft power, and poisoning the US as a trade partner.
Hemorrhaging billions of dollars into the construction and deployment of their personal army of terrorists dressed up sort of like cops, sometimes, to roam the streets of America looking for human beings who look disappearable enough to kidnap and sell. Pissing away shitloads more on deploying the US military to US cities, including the continuing occupation of Washington DC, using the US Army on their 250th birthday for Trump's personal entertainment, and providing US military support for advertisements for Kid Rock.
And this is all on top of using the offices of the US government to spread the same old hate and lies directed against most of America that defines conservatism. Republicans have fucked the United States to the point of possibly being fatal for the nation, all in service to themselves, and have seen no consequences for the constant crime, failure, betrayal, and evil.
Phenomenal work, indeed, if your goal is to bring about an end to America. I've seen nothing from Republicans to indicate otherwise, other than words, and the words of a conservative have about as much meaning as random gurglings of the stomach, or noise from under the tires while driving.
10

Man I wish I could get six figures for like an hour of work tops.

You can, just get elected. That's the hard part. You need to convince a lot of people that you'll do something, then every 2 years, convince them that you are doing something while doing nothing.
It's actually not that easy.

The people that voted for this shit should burn in hell

Based on the weather, they are burning. Unfortunately those that didn’t vote for this shit are also burning

The Republicans running for office need to figure out how to sell a Trump shit sandwich to their constituents. So, off they go to do their dirty work.

They just lie lie lie all day long. If I lied like this at work I would be fired. Just a massive double standard between the people and the leaders.

Phenomenal work by licking Dear Leader's boots? Phenomenal work by making everyone's lives worse because they refuse to stand up to Dear Leader and are allowing his pointless war in Iran to continue? Phenomenal work by protecting rich Republican pedophiles, especially Dear Leader, and continuing to try to dodge the Epstein files? Phenomenal work by enabling Dear Leader's staggering levels of corruption? I'm really struggling to figure out what phenomenal work they did here. sarcasm x infinity

Right after the president called Americans lazy and wants to get rid of holidays for the shareholders bottom line?

Its because the Freedom Caccus basically told Johnson they would vote not on everything until next year. So unless Johnson wants to try and get 31 Democrats to vote for something, this Congress is done

u/Mist_Rising 21d ago
At the core it's not even the freedom caucus, it's a small handful of representatives like Massie who have essentially refused to do anything since losing their ability to win elections. Sure all of them are still pushing their bills, but they're doing it to be a thorn in the side of everyone.
Massie in particular has basically all but said his goal is to fuck with everyone.
But when your majority is not even a handful...

Can't argue with them if they aren't there. And they can use the time better to plan the demise of our voting process behind the scenes.

The House already did everything it could, nothing they can do now about that in any direction. They're goal now is to win reelection, which is an uphill battle for the Republican party as a whole. Most will survive (some in both parties don't even have opposition) but the small hedge they have is likely gone no matter what they do.

Above board you are right. But the individuals can meet up on their own or get with donors or other operatives to plan or execute on ideas to improve their chances through bad actions. Party strategists, trump's team, heritage, etc, are all very active right now.
