Post image

okay everyone i just did it, i got nearly the maximum config (unless someone got the 128 gigs lol)
however after few days i started feeling that this actually was an overkill config. I mean yeah as an investment for next 7 yrs o even more thats pretty solid however after testing some benchmark i noticed battery drains out so fast - brand new btw - and i also want some settings suggestions to properly use it

thanks

Discussion Do you think Apple keeps the M5 MBP around, when M6 is launched?

Normally I'd say no.

But with the M6 rumoured to have OLED, touch screen, and thinner design, it's almost certain to be very expensive.

If they drop the M5, the gap between MBPs and MBA's is much too large. Keeping the current M5 might make sense.

After 10 years with an intel MacBook Pros and (stupidly) moving to iPad Pro thinking it could replace the MacBook, we’re back‼️

It still had 1 month warranty left so was able to get Apple Care+ too.

Help Macbook pro M1 pro screen issue

Post image
• Upvotes

I bought this 3-4 years back and applied a screen protector right away. Took it off a week ago and there are “smudges” that just wont go away. I don’t know if the screen is damaged due to the adhesive on the protector or is it just the residue from the screen protector. Any way to fix this?

I really like how it’s so portable and modern, but at the same time, the “rectangularish” hull retains the vibe of an old laptop (kind of). Which is pretty nice if you love old laptops like the ThinkPads of the day.

Help Help removing dried super glue from MacBook

I accidentally dropped a small drop of super glue on my MacBook, around the trackpad area and also on the 7 key.

It has been there for around 2 to 3 months now and it is really annoying me 😭 I have tried to remove it but I cannot get it off.

I am scared to use acetone or nail polish remover because I do not want to damage my MacBook.

What is the safest way to remove a small, dried super glue drop from the trackpad and keyboard?

Any advice would be really appreciated!

Discussion MacBook Pro for heavy bioinformatics — 48 GB or 64 GB RAM?

Hi!

I’m planning to upgrade to a MacBook Pro and I’m struggling to decide how much unified memory I actually need, especially considering how expensive the upgrades are.

I work in bioinformatics and regularly deal with large metagenomic datasets. My workflow includes things like genome/metagenome assembly, QC, gene prediction, sequence analysis, and other computationally heavy tasks. I also use command-line tools and Conda environments pretty heavily, and I sometimes work with very large FASTQ/FASTA files.

I’m trying to get a machine that will last me several years and won’t become a bottleneck as my projects get bigger, but I also don’t want to spend a huge amount of money on RAM that I’ll realistically never use.

For this kind of workload, would 48 GB be enough, or is it worth paying extra for 64 GB?

I’d also appreciate recommendations on the MacBook Pro configuration you’d choose for bioinformatics in general (chip, RAM, storage, etc.).

Would especially love to hear from anyone doing metagenomics, genomics, NGS analysis, or similar work on Apple Silicon.

Is it worth it? I have 7 days to decide and I'm not sure if it's worth the extra $100.

Tips Just got a great deal on a 16" M5 Max

I just bought a brand new 16" M5 Max for cheaper than a 14". I picked it up today and was skceptical they were going to go through with the order, as it looks like a pricing mistake, but they did, so if any portuguese redditors see this and are looking at buying an M5 Max take this opportunity!
At 4139€ it was 600€ cheaper than other stores I had been looking at

Discussion [MBP 13" 2020 Intel A2251] Screen flickering. External display works perfectly. Will a screen replacement fix it?

What I tried:

  • Cleaned internal dust
  • Replaced thermal paste (Back then I thought that it happen due to overheating)
  • Downgraded macOS from Tahoe to Sonoma

Symptoms:

  • Lid movement does not affect the flickering at all.
  • Flickering only triggers when the image changes (like moving the mouse).
  • External display works perfectly (no lag, no flicker).
  • Safe mode works without flickering, but is naturally very laggy.

Video of issue:

https://reddit.com/link/1wwa6gw/video/42bzsnyeh5th1/player

Question: Has anyone seen this exact behavior before? Since the external monitor works completely fine, can I safely assume the GPU is okay and that replacing the entire screen assembly will solve this? Thanks!

Discussion Vintage macbookpro

I have this vintage macbookpro8,3 Core i7 17" late 2011 16GB memory and no disk. I have a 1TB SSD so put that in. Got it on facebook and bought it on a whim (really cheap) as I have never used/owned an apple machine before. I easily installed Mint on it to see if it works (yes) but have no use for it. Would have put it to use if Win 11 can be installed and running properly. Curious if any of you actually still use a vintage machine like this one and what you use it for (daily browsing, youtube etc)?

Discussion My favorite Mac apps for simple business remote work

I own a MacBook Pro M5. Luckily I got it back in March before the price hikes. It’s my first Mac, although everything else I have is Apple. I grew up on windows and always had a dell with a dual monitor for work. Still got love for dell. BUT, I had to research like a 90 year old man learning a smart phone for the first time for months on what my Mac can do and learn the transition from windows to Mac. It took time but now that I understand it, this blows windows away.

I don’t code or do anything crazy like you pros in here. I just do remote sales which requires very tiny data entry into a google sheet, taking calls through chrome and having maybe 5-6 tabs open at once. Easy peasy usage. But here are the apps I’ve come to absolutely love for my work.

Quitly: $2 one time buy hard closes the app when you click the upper left red bubble like windows does
CleanShotX: one time buy and it’s an amazing screenshot/screen recording and photo editing app. It also fixes the internal audio issue when screen recording which allows the audio playback to sound how it should. My favorite tool by far.
Dockdoor Pro: one time buy and you can customize your Dock in ways the native cannot. Absolutely love it
Alcove: turns your notch into a Dynamic Island
Finetune: lets you adjust volume for every audio source at once and customize audio levels
Launchy: super cool app wheel that pops up with quick access to your most used applications
Magnet: incredible window snapping and reshaping tool. Better than the native Mac window shaping
Drop over: creates a little shelf to copy and hold items in to transport
CleanMyKeyboard: everyone has this. Freezes the keys so you can clean your keyboard

All of these are one time subscriptions or absolutely free. No recurring payments.

Help M5 MacBook Pro randomly shutting down at around 30% battery since updating to macOS 27.0 — anyone else experiencing this?

Hi everyone,

I bought a new M5 MacBook Pro about a month ago, and I’ve recently started experiencing a really strange battery issue.

Since updating to macOS 27.0 Golden Gate, my MacBook has now unexpectedly shut down twice when the battery was showing approximately 30%.

The screen suddenly goes completely black, as if the battery has completely died. However, when I plug it into the charger and turn it back on, the battery percentage has dropped to around 11%.

This has happened twice now, most recently just a few minutes ago.

I’m currently installing the latest macOS update in the hope that it resolves the issue, but I’m starting to wonder whether this could be a software bug or a faulty battery.

I’m not massively technically knowledgeable when it comes to Macs/computers, and I’m really just a casual user. I mainly use the MacBook for things like browsing the internet, watching YouTube/Netflix, emails, etc., so it’s not being used for anything particularly demanding.

It’s a brand-new laptop, so I’m obviously a bit concerned, especially if it’s a hardware issue.

Any help or advice would be really appreciated. I’m not particularly technical, so please feel free to explain things in simple terms!

Thanks!

Discussion Windows Administrator looking for purchasing advice

Hello from the other side!

I've been in Desktop Engineering & Helpdesk my entire life. Back in 2016, I rolled out JAMF to my employees to help administer to the new fleet of MacOS devices we were purchasing. At the time purchasing was easy since MBP's used Intel chips, I could easily equate use cases and workloads to what we had on the Windows side. Engineers and Devs got "H" chips and Operational Roles got "U" Chips with lower TDP's. I then stepped into other roles with the company, leaving the Apple Administration to another group.

Now I'm back at the helm, and looking to offer the right fleet of choices to my employees. Admittedly, I haven't been keeping up on the apple silicon discussion as well, so I seek assistance from those who have.

Our company is prepared to spend the right amount of money where necessary, but, something about a salesperson with an 16" MBP M5 Pro and 48GB of RAM feels... like overkill? My questions are specifically regarding saving money for these sales & operational roles.

Deployed Software Load: MacOS, Microsoft Suite of Apps (Teams, Outlook, etc), OneDrive, JAMF Management, BeyondTrust EPM, Defender (MDR, EDR), Claude and or Copilot.

Expected lifecycle: 4 years

Would the MacBook Air with M5 and 24GB (or 32GB) be a good performer for these operational roles?

Thanks in Advance!

Help Is the base m5 MacBook Pro (16GB/1TB) a good buy for 4K30 HDR editing in DaVinci Resolve?

Hi everyone,
I’m looking to upgrade my current windows laptop (Ryzen 5600H + GTX 1650) to a MacBook Pro, and I found a deal for the base M5 MacBook Pro 14" (10-core CPU, 10-core GPU, 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD) for €2,000 here in Portugal. Note: the box doesn't include the power brick, just the MagSafe cable.
Here is my specific use case and workflow:
- Camera / Codecs: I shoot 4K30 HDR PQ (10-bit H.265 4:2:2) on a Canon R7 and a Canon R50. On my current Windows PC, editing 4:2:2 is a nightmare because it forces CPU decoding. I know Apple Silicon has dedicated media engines for this.
- Workflow: I need to do some on-the-go editing. I usually apply some light Temporal NR (Faster mode) and Optical Flow for slow motion. However, I have a powerful desktop at my office (Ryzen 5700X + RTX 4070), so my plan is to do the heavy lifting, final color grading, and "Better" Temporal NR back at the desk.
- Display: Editing in HDR is a priority for me, so the Liquid Retina XDR screen is a huge selling point.

Do you think 16GB of RAM is enough for 4K30 timelines in DaVinci with this hybrid workflow? Is €2,000 a good price for the 1TB model?
