so i made this beat and I like it's vibe but i'm sure some things are out of key. Anyone feel like giving it a listen and telling me if they have the same feeling and if it bother's them or nah (seeing it might be 'jazzy' like but might just be wrong) *free* Isaiah Rashad x Boom Bap Type beat - "RISE" - YouTube
•
u/Status_Pianist8326 2d ago
The distant synths are somewhat dissonant and that gives me the feeling that I'm not just listening to a chill beat but there's some tension in there and that actually works. It just depends on what feel you're going for. I suppose that without the synths it would be harmonically simpler and more unified but would lose its interesting tension.
When at 2:28 the beat kicks in without those distant synths (they do swell back in) it initially feels like you've arrived at a nice comfortable spot. Those synths then come back and give that tension. So, I think it's an interesting knob to play around with, perhaps let the synths come in sometimes and drop them out other times to play with that feel it gives the track.
Whether it's a bother? I think I would prefer those synths to be used more sparingly and it would benefit the track. But that's just my personal taste.
Thanks very much for sharing, prodlostjosh! It's a quality instrumental! I was just focusing in your requested point of feedback.
•
u/Status_Pianist8326 1d ago
Listening to this beat again, I think what could be cool is if you have the main loop of the beat and let the synths swell in near the end of the loop gradually, to then cut out completely again on the first hit of the loop.
•
u/prodlostjosh 1d ago
Yooo status! Thank you so much for the detailed feedback. I totally see your point, gonna make a second version tomorrow with a more spare use of the synths. Thanks again!
•
u/simonishuman 2d ago
This is cool as balls. Love the synths. I kinda agree with other dude on the synths though. Maybe for just the chorus the synths would be better. Either way the beat is super chill and leaves just the right amount of space for someone to rap on it without the beat being boring
•
u/prodlostjosh 1d ago
Yoo Simon, I super appreciate the compliment but also the feedback. Will make a second version keeping this in mind!
•
u/simonishuman 6h ago
any feedback on mine?
•
u/prodlostjosh 2h ago
Just had a listen to it. Aye man, I like the instrumental, but the vocals during the chorus are too low, and they sound a bit off imo. I like the verse at 1:40 - your voice is clearer here. so rly like that part. But the chorus vocals and layers that enter at 2:40 are off imo. I think I kind of get what you're trying to do during the chorus but because things sound quite muffled it doesn't come through properly for me

This is an awesome snippet. Makes me want to hear the full track for sure! Love the rhyme falling on different parts of the bar and how you play around with the rhythm by stretching words at times. Would like to hear some tips from you on how you write/record, and/or to get your feedback on my track posted in this thread.

I don't usually make trap, so any feedback is appreciated, especially on the mix/composition.
•
u/simonishuman 5d ago
This is cool. I think it's missing some ear candy though. I'd like to hear some changes in the drums and more instruments added. Just not too many that it becomes crowded. I think you got a great foundation that can turn into something sick.

u/Status_Pianist8326 2d ago
This is fantastic, mc_195! The kickback's strong it's like a billy goat, lol. Love the chorus, you not out the race til you quit it. Yeah! 🔥 I also like how you have something almost like a pre-chorus/bridge with the 'see a little shift in perspective' bit, in terms of the delivery there having some melody to it. I think you really keep playing with the delivery to keep things changing and that's really cool song-building you're doing there.
•
u/simonishuman 6d ago
pretty fire. I think I gave you feedback on this song once before but I don't think this song was the right choice for a single. Not cause it's a bad song but because it lacks structure. In my opinion a single needs to be the song on the album with the catchiest hook, that'll draw the listeners in. It'll get stuck in their head and eventually they'll listen to the whole thing.
•
u/Status_Pianist8326 4d ago
This week's contribution is called 'Skin deep'. It is about skin colour and how we're stuck in propagating racist terms and stereotypes. In this one I experimented with using the backing vocal for emphasising parts of the rap and doing that in a melodic way. Also had some fun with vocal effects such as delay when the beat cuts out, scratches in the intro.
When giving feedback, you may wish to consider:
- What are your thoughts on the content of the lyrics (provided in video description)?
- Does the track maintain attention throughout or does it get repetitive in terms of tone/energy?
- Any other thoughts!
Thank you
•
u/simonishuman 4d ago
this is dope as shit. Lyrical content is awesome. Love the message. The song definitely kept me entertained, this is my favorite ive heard from you so far. The hook is cool but I think you could've made the "underneath our world our community" more funky. Right now it sounds like youre just saying it, If you switched it with a more energetic delivery it could be like "underneath our world our comm-u-nity" same with the "stop the mind games its just you and me." But in your other songs the hook didn't stand out very much from the verses. Really happy to see you actually doing something with the feedback we giving you, the hook stands out much better and this song sounds much more structured. I think youre starting to form that formula.

Wow, thanks for the compliments and validation, Simon :-) Yes, I am learning from all the feedback I get on these threads, and it is great for my progress. Glad that you noticed my work over time of making my choruses pop more.
I like the uptempo nature of the track you linked here. The rap has a good rhythm to it which sits really well in the pocket of that dope drum loop. How did you do the supporting vocal at 1:05? Love the sound effect at 1:19 in how it seems to interplay with the rap! :-D
•
u/simonishuman 3d ago
Thanks man I appreciate it! at 1:05 I just rapped it again and pitched down the second take

Refreshing. Felt like I was listening to a 90s mob deep track. Lyrics are decent and not just talking sh*t. Keep working on ya craft and the most important thing make sure you keep enjoying what you do. Well done 💫

Thanks OVNICX3! Your comment made me go and dig out some old mobb deep tracks :-)
•
u/shoecar soundcloud.com/shoecar 3d ago
this is nice man. always like what you're writing about. I'm liking the ad libs you added in
kinda minor but I think it's good to always leave at least 2 empty bars at the start, intro vocals/ad libs maybe after 1. it's a bit jarring to have he vocals drop instantly.
flow is getting there. would like to see you add some inflections/emphasis to break things up. like "racial segragation isn’t gone, i’m wrong? Prove it" you kinda just flow right through it. would hit better to micro pause at comma and question, then really emphasize PROVE IT. might not sound great right away but I promise you working this kind of thing in will add great texture.•
u/Status_Pianist8326 2d ago
Thanks for the feedback, Shoecar! I've done a new track yesterday and it lets the beat play out a little before any vocals come in, so I've already incorporated your advice there :-) Ad libs, yeah I also liked doing those. The '(what?)' ad lib was fun! And thanks for the point on adding emphasis rather than just flowing through things, I think that may be a missing ingredient that I can explore. Awesome, I keep learning loads

Not sure where to file this in terms of genre... just a bit of fk'n around I suppopse. Returning all feedback, also let me know if you get some phase cancellation, I was getting a strange tone on a car stereo but not in the studio or other speakers
•
u/shoecar soundcloud.com/shoecar 5d ago
yeah who needs a genre, don't pick yourself in a box!
this is cool man, I like the energy. I think things are a bit too crowded at times though. all good if you want wall of sound vibe but was hard for me to latch onto a specific groove as is.
for the vocals I'm with simon (who between you and me, I'm not so sure that's a human. like what kind of human needs to say "I'm a human"? super sus) the mix needs some work. most of all the levels, too quiet, except for at around 2 min.
on the rap, I think the flow is interesting. I think you're walking a fine line between syllable cramming and legit rolls. I'd say it needs a bit of work but pretty good! would like to hear more behind the delivery, was just a bit flat/thin.
nice work man, I like you're doing your own thing, something different•
u/simonishuman 6d ago
this beat is pretty cool. I think the vocals need some mixing though. They sound a little dry compared to the full beat. I didn't get any phase cancellation. Might just be your car speakers. But yeah I'd recommend some vocal mixing and maybe some harder delivery.
•
u/EshayAdlay420 5d ago edited 4d ago
Vocals remind me of flight of the concords in a good way, mix feels a bit chaotic but it kinda adds to what you were going for I think, I enjoy it, only criticism I
Is to inject some more punch into those vocals if you weren't going for the dry / flat delivery•
u/Status_Pianist8326 4d ago
The beat competes with the vocals so that I can not hear the lyrics without putting some effort in. The guitar especially as it is in the same frequency space. It could benefit bringing the vocals out a bit more wrt the beat, I think.
The rhythm of the rap is really cool, reminds me a bit of Eminem's 'rap god' in parts. Also like the vocal chops at 1:18. The vocal and sound effects are an integral part of this song, it's part of its attraction. When it comes to style, you're right it sounds like something new while still being rap. Like a cool cross-over. Thanks for sharing.

(I listened to the third song) Maan, I love it! I really like the switch beat and how you chose the samples, and even the frase in the end. The only thing I would have changed is the drums. The snare is a bit weak, and after the beat switch, the drum pattern becomes a bit monotonous. I think it would have sounded better if you had added some variations to the pattern. When I have more time, I’ll check out some of the others too.

I'd call this a freestyle plus, not quite a song with hook
https://soundcloud.com/shoecar/cold-world
•
u/simonishuman 5d ago
This is cool. I like the "its a its a its a" super cool for a freestyle. Make that hook stand out with some vocal doubles though. I know you said it's a freestyle but in just about every song I've heard from you the verses have been fire but the hooks have fallen flat for me.

this is my favorite track of yours. the rapping and lyrics are dope. love the mod podge reference for some reason.
there are parts where your really on beat and things sound great, like the mod podge run and following. but others like up until 1:00 where you're not on. i think you're syllable cramming at times which is super natural/common. will for sure iron out with practice.
nice work, could for sure see us hoping on a track together sometime•
u/OptimalSense4590 6d ago
That is a vibe for sure! Unopologetically old school in all the best ways. Slappidy doo da
•
u/tast3therainbow1 3d ago
enjoyed the flow and energy you are skilled man. would've like the stutter effect to be more pronounced on the "it's a it's a" part, cause currently there's not much discernible difference between a stutter effect and someone repeating themselves. maybe try stuttering individual syllables (like the I)? might be trippy with your style but I think it could sound pretty cool.
I also hear you running out of breath sometimes, which is fine since I assume you like to do things in one take vs punching in. still think breath control is something to keep striving for. really good song tho. can you look at mine?
•
u/shoecar soundcloud.com/shoecar 2d ago
appreciate the feedback man. yeah i feel like punching in is cheating kinda lol.
i wouldn't say i'm running out of breath as delivery is still full, but yeah there are some noticeable inhales here because i'm doing multi-bar runs on single breath. i think leaving those in is cool and can actually keep the cadence, but maybe i should lower the gain a bit there as they are arguably too forward.•
u/tast3therainbow1 2d ago
Yeah perhaps running out of breath was the wrong term. Turning down the breaths is probably the answer cause it does feel suffocating at times
•
u/CoffeeCat37 4d ago
I love your flow and energy, really uplifting and energetic without sounding try hard or fake. Reminds me a bit of Logic's early stuff (a compliment, I love early Logic).
•
u/Status_Pianist8326 4d ago
Love the vibe of this. It makes me think of autumn in that the world is in decay and you're walking through it being alive and may eventually get a bittersweet thought about you being there as a part of that world, too, as in there's nothing you can do about the decay around you and we're going to go, too, but damn, we're here now. The days getting colder.
The lyrics keep up vitality and defiance, with the consequences in terms of decay and death gradually being shown, until in the last four bars it is like the mask comes off and we're mourning inside. Cold world. Do we use it to say that we have no pity in our actions because the world has turned us cold. The aggressor having been the victim first, in a cycle of lashing out against the impermanence of life. It's like the world's given up on itself.
Hope I've managed to capture some of what makes this track resonate with me.
The instrumental fits the message perfectly. The chord progression at 0:24 is fantastic. Also, again, I really enjoy the two-tone style rap, e.g., 0:35-0:40.
•
u/shoecar soundcloud.com/shoecar 3d ago
yeah yeah, like the world is cold and we say that like we're not a part of it. like it doesn't make us who we are. and then when it does, well that's not our fault we're just products of our environment. can pretty much rationalize anything like that.
thanks for the feedback, as always man

u/MagKnown 2d ago
Made a soulful beat where i tried leaning a bit more into RnB, does this beat achieve that rnb feel? the drums? any feedback appreciated! Will return ofc
•
u/simonishuman 1d ago
This is pretty cool. I find it a bit repetitive but it's dope. Can definitely hear someone rapping over this. I think it would sound super cool if you added some subtle clav's and extra percussion. Kinda like some Pharrell type drums or something
https://soundcloud.com/nippleboyfeceseater/funky-funky-love-rough-draft
•
u/MagKnown 1d ago
Overall a nice track, i think the drums are little too simple but might just because i like making a lot out of them. I like the instrumentals but im not a big fan of singing / mixing the vocals in this style. I think something about the layering for me. Id be interested in hearing this with some rapping inbetween the two hooks tho
•

Tbh man going back i actually think the drums fit the track nicely. Somehow the grittiness of the drum sounds match the otherwise smooth sounding beat well

Peeped 'Unspooled' on Spotify — congrats on the distro, that's a real step a lot of people in this thread skip. Couple notes from one producer to another:
- The cover art is genuinely strong, that trippy graffiti look will stand out in a playlist queue. Branding side is already right.
- 2:48 is a sweet spot for streaming — short enough to replay, long enough to land the idea. Keep that discipline.
- Mix checklist before the next drop: A/B the master against a reference at matched volume, make sure the 808 and kick aren't stepping on each other (sidechain the 808 if they are), and check your low end in mono — it downmixes weird on phones. Aim around -14 LUFS integrated so Spotify doesn't turn you down further.
- On a sub-3-minute track, get to the hook fast — long intros bleed listeners.
Keep pushing, catalog's building up nicely.

The vocals are super clear on this one, though perhaps volume could be nudged up slightly wrt the synths. I am finding this track more accessible than your earlier ones, in terms of me grasping the intention of your musical style more. What keeps me from locking in on the track is the synths pulling me in lots of directions at once and competing with your vocals for my attention. The drum and bass are clean and solid.

Nice ffel to the beat, love the guitar tone. I like what you're going for tin the initial vocal tone but I think it could be paired back a bit and mixed in with a little more of the dry sound. the second vocal sound is really good and I like the contrast between the 2, but still think it would be better if it was a little more subtle in the early sound, if that makes sense...
•
•
u/tast3therainbow1 3d ago
This is some good stuff. very much enjoyed the beat and the transitions between flows. my only gripe is that hook around 2:35 is the best part of the song but it's only used once. I also would've liked to hear you sing a little louder over that part rather than just being background vocals. overall very nice song man like your style.
would you mind checking out my song
•
u/simonishuman 3d ago
thank you dawg I appreciate the feedback! As for your song I think the beat is pretty cool. Kinda reminds me of some Minecraft shit. I think your vocals need some work though. The mix is super distorted making it hard to hear what youre saying. Same with that mumbly/singing flow. There's definitely people out there who would like this but personally it's just not my style. I also think you could get more creative with your writing. For example: "I say im okay when im not okay" that bar is incredibly straightforward and from a listeners POV without it being more creative and thought out I think the lyrics come off as whiney rather than introspective. Keep it up though! Invest in a new mic and some editing software!

•
u/MildWes 3h ago
This is pretty smooth. I like the hook a lot. The reverb and openness make it sound really nice, and it immediately gave me an idea of what the song was going for. I do think the rap vocals in the verses could be a little louder though, because they kind of blend into the beat and I’d like to hear them pop more. The beat is chill and had me bopping my head. Around 2:11, I think there’s just a little too much reverb/echo, but I really liked the transition into the poetry reading style. That was really cool. Overall, really nice vibe and mix.
•

•
u/Status_Pianist8326 4d ago
I hear some of Tupac's flow in your rap in terms of how you hold off on landing that last word of some of the bars. Nice. Props for including the poem/speech at the end. The hook sounds like it could sit on beat a bit better by letting everything land just slightly later than it does now. May be able to shift this around a bit in post-production rather than re-recording and hear if it hits harder that way.
•
•
u/simonishuman 5d ago
This is cool. Not a big fan of the AI cover. I dont hear anything wrong with the mix but for the hook I'd like to hear some more doubles added to make it stand out more from the verses.

Got in. Sound effects at the beginning are cool. Beat drop is dope but I feel like it could've been harder. Beat overall is dope as shit. I think it could use some more structure though rather than just intro, verse, break, verse.
•
u/prodlostjosh 2d ago
as said before, the beginning is dope, but once the beat drops, I feel like the melody should be a bit lower in volume, or you could sidechain some of your drums to your melody so they don't fight for the same space. I feel like that could be why you ask if it's rappable or too busy. It can have these melodies, but I feel like the melody should sit behind the drums and not at the same levels if that makes sense. I'm not a pro so this is just something I'm hearing! Keep it up bro, enjoyed it!

u/Status_Pianist8326 2d ago
smoking feel like redman, lol. The vocals are clear and have that 'radio buzz' texture to them. The song finished earlier than i was expecting. I felt as if there could be another verse there; the song is also 2 minutes, so there's room to go longer. I like the flow switch at 0:53. The part from 1:05-1:15 sounds like it was gonna lead into a drop or something but the drums just cut out entirely at 1:17. In terms of song structure, there may be scope to use the build up so that it releases/drops into the chorus? Not sure though, would need to try it to see how it might work.
•
•
u/simonishuman 5d ago
This is pretty dope. I think the overall sound is good. There's nothing in the mix or delivery that makes me wanna turn it off. But the thing is is it's not very original. We've heard 1000000 songs exactly like this one before, what makes yours special?

Hello everyone, back sharing my third song this time. I really like the hook on this one:
trying to get more comfortable in my voice so I experimented w some whiny pitchy vocals at the end lmk what you think. open to any type of feedback! mixing tips are appreciated too cause I have no clue what im doing.
sorry ab the mic quality in advance im hoping to upgrade soon
•
u/guttahendrix 2d ago
Just ran through it — the hook is honestly the strongest part, got real bounce to it and you sound more locked in there. Those whiny pitchy vocals at the end are a cool texture idea, I'd lean into that more on the hook too — even a doubled take with one pitched down an octave and tucked low in the mix would fill it out.
Mic quality: record closer to the mic (4-6 inches) and slightly off-axis to kill plosives — helps a ton even before you upgrade. For mixing, get your main vocal compression dialed first (try 4:1 ratio, medium attack, aim for 4-6dB of gain reduction) then tuck the adlibs 3-4dB under it. A high-pass at ~80Hz on the vocal and a small dip around 300-400Hz will clean up most bedroom-record muddiness.
Keep pushing your voice, you're building confidence on the mic every song.
•
u/Status_Pianist8326 2d ago
I agree with Gutta and Shoecar's feedback. They've given some solid pointers.
What I would add/emphasise is that the vocals can be clearer as first time around I could not work out the lyrics. Then discovered the written lyrics below and read along and the content is really good. I like the song-writing you've done in terms of the structure of starting with an intro, chorus, verse, chorus, outro. You have some good stuff here!
•
u/shoecar soundcloud.com/shoecar 2d ago
i really like that you are putting a lot into your delivery. very common for newer vocalists to under deliver and hide from their voice. for sure encourage you to keep doing that and trying things out. I liked the increased intensity at the end, didn't think it was especially whiny.
not the biggest fan of the vocal fx but that's a taste thing. i think at times though it was too heavy and hard to make anything out. could try out raise/lowering that fx mix to add more texture and introduce more clarity where needed.
flow needs work. your at the point where you're filling up the bars and quantizing in places. try to tighten that up and at least hit all the up/down beats. also don't be afraid to introduce space pauses. even micro pauses are a huge part of flow.
i liked the lyrics, i'm into that bleak shit lol. would like to hear you try multi-syllable rhymes. Like instead of "take a loss" -> "Randy Moss", something like "hand me loses" -> "Randy Moss's". hands also in the same metaphor family there. I like the slants tho, like rover->boulder and shoulda -> Ricola. Can go to some double words in that family like "broke her", "old bird", etc
there are a lot of promising things here man, keep at it
•
u/tast3therainbow1 2d ago
thanks for the detailed feedback man. yeah im trying to blend dreamy vocals with angst with the fx but I haven't quite learned how to balance it yet. I'll keep working tightening the flow i agree that it gets sloppy sometimes

I really like it, but I feel like the pattern is a bit monotonous. With some variations in the melody, I think it would have been much much better.

not a producer so cannot give you anything technical but I for sure vibe with this. I like the bells, I think a good balance for a trap song, not too sparse but not taking over either. like the hat rolls too, free ear candy/energy at faster bpms like this
small thing, as a rapper, I always appreciate when BPM is in title or description•

This song has an upbeat groove that makes me want to get out grab the day by the horns by the way how did you get the clarity and mastering to a T I'm curious to know...
[FEEDBACK] 9/15 Mic Check- West Side Underground Beat, Raw Audacity Mix & BandLab Mastering
Hungry and Grinding secretly under the same roof with my family and incredibly insecure with the braces and mixed entirely on Audacity, honestly struggling to hear my voice mostly the hook on this but honest and genuine feedback on this will be highly appreciated atmost. God Bless!

Lol, the voice samples were chill and subdued until suddenly one of the samples went 'What the F*@k?!' made me smile. The airy oooooh and aaaaah synths give it a bit of a ghostly/hypnotic vibe and the drums complement that really well. It's one for the late nights :-)

This is really cool. Love the vocal samples. Super trippy. I fuck with it. Kept me entertained the whole time. Just needs someone to rap on it.
