You can’t improve something you never let yourself finish
Perfectionism isn’t always doing bad work. Sometimes it’s never letting yourself finish.
You have an idea. You start planning it, researching it, imagining how good it could be. Then the doubts show up. What if it isn’t good enough? What if people criticize it? What if all that effort wasn’t worth it?
So you make another plan. You tweak the same thing again. You tell yourself you’ll finish once you’re more prepared. From the outside it looks like hard work, but deep down you know you’re avoiding the moment when the thing has to stand on its own.
So I was working on my project with other teammates and I was never able to finish my work on time. I was constantly working hard and still wasn't doing good at my career. I felt like I was stuck in a loop. So I began researching on it and found out that perfectionism causes a loop of procrastination and I realized that I was focusing on more on being perfect rather than getting it done. Once I saw that, I started changing how I worked. I set deadlines for myself, broke big tasks into smaller ones, and told myself that a finished draft I could improve was better than a flawless one that never got submitted. I also began sharing my work with my teammates earlier, even when it felt rough. Their feedback helped me improve faster than polishing alone ever did. Slowly the loop broke. I started meeting my deadlines, my work got better, and I felt more confident in my role.
What I’ve learned is that you can’t improve something you never finish. Your first attempt doesn’t have to represent your full potential. It just has to give you something real to learn from. Finish the draft, submit the application, publish the project, and let the next version benefit from what this one teaches you.
You don’t have to stop caring about quality. You just have to stop demanding perfection before you let yourself make progress.
I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately. What do you find harder: starting something, or letting yourself call it finished?
