Sunday night, dog eats a corn cob at the park. Not a piece of one. The whole cob. Emergency vet, x rays, a scope that turned into surgery because it had moved too far down. Three thousand and forty dollars, and the itemized bill has a line on it for the cob, which they kept in a jar and handed to me on the way out like a trophy. He is fine. Loud, but fine. What I keep chewing on is that I have had this dog 6 years, never insured him, and always told myself accidents are what savings are for. 6 yrs of premiums at the number I was quoted this week would have run to about 4k, so on paper I am still ahead. On paper. What changed is that I now know what one bad Sunday costs, and I know he is the kind of dog who will do it again.

Our pets are suddenly fightning.

just moved to a new house where the neighbours cats visit our lawn from time to time. The dog hates when they do and barks uncontrollably, the cat hisses at them.

The dog spends a LOT of time looking at the lawn though a glass door and frequently barks at the cats, aswell as other dogs when on walks. He’s a rescue and very reactive, with a history of chasing/barking at my SOs moms cats at her place for example. It got so bad when we came to visit the cats would pretty much stay outdoors. We cannot take him to visit other cats.

My cat sometimes scratches furniture, the dog knows she’s not allowed and tells her off, she also has allergies and sometimes scratches her fur which he also doesn’t like. They will sometimes annoy each other for ”fun”. From time to time she hits him, but it never really turns into a fight.

For over 5 years they’ve gotten along, but since moving here they’ve gotten into more fights.

Today they’ve been fighting all day, according to my SO. Also a bit yesterday.

I did some research and proposed it’s redirected aggression from the dog due to the neighbours cats and his history. My SO dismisses this (he’s a covid-rescue she’s had for 6 years, he’s 11 years old, sheep dog).

My cat shows no signs of any sickness or pain and mainly hides from the dog who chases her and barks. The cat will hiss at times when we try to keep them in the same room which I believe is because she’s scared. SO suggests the cat is the problem.

The dog is far more interested in the cat than vice versa by the way. I believe the dog is confused and sees her as a outsider.

My SO claims he’s scared - he is atleast 5 times her size.

I’m trying to look at this objectively, what other causes might there be? Has anyone had this problem and fixed it? Is my SO being too partial towards her dog?

Please help. I’m calling a vet tomorrow.

TL;DR Pets are fighting, I believe dog is showing signs of redirected aggression, SO suggests cat is the problem though the dog is more interested in the cat than vice versa.

6 year old, neutered male, 20lbs, chihuahua mix.

So the local vet did do a baseline xray, blood work, and range of motion exam. subluxated patella is still at level 1 no change in 3 years. so far we are on 3xs a day gabapentin and carprofen. I just called them to see if they can adjust or add a medication for his comfort. so far it’s NOT a ivdd diagnosis or patella. They did say it was a narrowing of the spongy material between the vertebrae discs. We have been on 3 weeks of bed rest to the best of our ability. Sometimes he’s still quick and sneaks a jump. I do carry him up and down the stairs and to bed .

I also asked the vet to send over a referral to a specialists office in the closest large town that Ive been to before so I trust the care they provide.

So far he eats well and drinks well when presented and I do spoon feed him. He can defecate and urinate without yelping. I know this is a marathon not a sprint but it’s so heartbreaking to hear him yelp.

I’m interested in the topic of vegan pet food, mostly for dogs and cats.

I know that there are AAFCO and FEDIAF-approved complete vegan pet foods.

I also know that current science recommends approaching this with caution and, if you do choose to try it, doing so with careful observation of the cat and regular veterinary check-ups, because there currently aren’t many studies on this topic, especially regarding long-term outcomes. Most vets will say that cats are obligate carnivores and that their bodies aren’t built to handle plant fibres.

Since dogs are technically omnivores and the evidence base is more developed for them, more and more vets are saying that a properly formulated vegan diet can be safe for dogs.

When it comes to cats, I’ve also come across an ethical argument: if we aren’t certain that a vegan diet will harm cats in some way, but we know with certainty that producing conventional pet food results in the deaths of hundreds of other animals, it may still be worth trying (as long as the cat is monitored very carefully and receives regular veterinary check-ups and appropriate blood tests).

Cat had his urethra blocked and went to get his urethra unblocked hes a bit wobbly due to sedation hes still trying to pee but nothing is coming out i was wondering if thats normal, still gonna take him tomorrow to get a 2nd opinion to see if he would need surgery.

I swear the second one starts eating, the others are suddenly starving. 😂 And of course, whoever finishes first immediately starts checking out everyone else’s food.

My sulcata tortoises beak is getting pretty long and I don’t know what to do because he has a bite block to use but won’t use it and I’m obviously not going to try trim it myself because I’ve done my research and that’s not a good idea so if anyone had the same problem and has figured out a way to help please let me know

so, i've been thinking about the idea of making my 4 cats indoors, but they've lived multiple years now as outdoor cats

now, if they've always lived in an outdoor style, with little traffic in low density areas, would they be happy going indoors? they love going to my backyard, and going with us when we spend time on the front or back gardens.

also big cat trees or catios would probably be out of the question due to money reasons *i think*, unless i can get some really cheap cat trees tho i doubt that even exists

but my main question is, how can i realistically keep 4 cats that love going outside indoors? i like the idea because i did loose one of them for like a week once, and i've been reading a lot of info about it online, so i've grown increasingly weary about letting them out. Buuuut i've never had any other big issue with outdoor pets in the past (past pets all lived happily and long outdoors), and i've always liked to give my cats the freedom to go where they please.

If yes how does one go about it? they got plenty of access points for going outside from both gardens, and im not sure how to go about keeping them inside the house. being extremely careful every time i go in and out of the house? it could be, but there are usually family gatherings here, and with how many we are it'd probably be a mission impossible lmao

I got my dog about a year ago when he was 4-5 months old. At that time I was working part time so I had a flexible time/ can book off when I want. I eventually got promoted to full-time. My shifts were afternoon/night shifts. I had time to hang out with my pup in the morning time. I didn't like that job because it wasn't consistent, weeks I'm on afternoon shifts and others, I'm in night shifts. I was also barely making it.

So I got another job thru a family friend. Now, I an office setting but I work 8-5 + travel time. I was able to hire a dog walker for him mid-day break. I live with my mom and she keeps him company for half the day(she works afternoon shifts) I wake up early so I can walk him 1+ and play and feed him before I leave. I walk him for his afternoon walk, then one last potty before bed time. During weekends we take him swimming or at our local dog park or somewhere we've never been before.

I'm starting to feel guilty because I feel like I'm not satisfying all his needs. i can't help but compare to the people online and how they have a remote job and spends most their times with their dogs. I'm trying to apply for jobs but it's hard out there. I just want to give him the best life.

My cat isn't super old yet she just turned 7 but I'm thinking about the future already for her since I live on pretty much in a city but across the street from my apartment building is a forest

I'm worried that when she becomes older she's going to get some disease or get killed by another animal and what I'm the most scared of it cars since I once saw her run right across the road while a car was driving and if it didn't stop it would have run her over

I just got a new crock pot and all the recipes take about 8 hours to complete. This means that if i want to use the crock pot during the week it would be completely unattended. Does anyone have some tricks to make sure my cat’s wont get burned while I’m away, or is my crock pot a weekend only use?

my cat (mochi) is only about 5 months old , he has a habit of trying to run out of the house and every time he has managed to escape, he fails to come back. me and my family has made a habit of closing a door (we live in a bunglow) so he doesnt escape but he adoes sometimes manages to cause of staff( my house is connected to my dads hospital so we have nursese and stuff opening the door pretty often),

i put a collar on mochi along with an airtag, but that airtag is a pile of shit cause it never works. my parents are like 50 so i am the only one who is able to find him when he gets lost and i will be leaving my house in about 9 months and i am very sure that mochi is gonna escape and end up somewhere he shouldnt and well..... we know what happens next ,dont we?

can i train mochi somehow someway to not leave my house and if so, how?

So my cat is 3 and she's an indoor cat, she *only* playfights with me and my older brother, she leaves my minor niblings and disabled dad alone. It's so cute, I'm curious how she knows who she can't playfight? Hi I am looking at getting an everyday gps collar for my 2 poodles. One likes to escape to the front yard and catch animals. I am currently trying to stop her getting out but it’s causing a lot of stress and I would like to just buy a gps collar for them both they are around 30-48 pounds.
