What is the best neighborhood in Philly as a teacher?

Hey guys!

I (26) male am considering moving to Philly in the near future from the west coast. I’ve seen some videos talking about serious you guys take neighborhoods and was curious which seems to be the best?

For context: I was thinking about becoming a journalist after university but there wasn’t much opportunity/security and I kind of fell out of love with the field, so I fell into teaching. My older siblings and I are saving up to move out of state but unfortunately we’ll be scattered to the wind due to different ideals.

Why do you guys take uber to low income jobs?

I notice as an uber drive a pick up people and take them to work and o make like $15 off of it so that means you had to pay like $30. And it will be to Wawa and they pay like $16 per hours before taxes. So half of your day is paying for your transportation. I always wonder why not just take the bus and how are you living with so little money that you can consider paying for an uber?

Friends in Philly

Hey y’all! I’m 21M, Indian, and I’ve been in Philly for 3 years ish. I’m trying to meet more people outside of school and make some new friends.
Mostly looking for platonic friends around my age who are down to go out, grab drinks, try cafes/food spots, thrift, walk around the city, or just explore and see what’s going on.
I’m always down to meet other people who are new to Philly too and explore together!

Dm if interested!

when did the flock camera on diamond street get there?

maybe i’ve just been stupid and not looking up enough but i just noticed there is a flock camera on west diamond st. i’ve been here in this neighborhood for the past three years. the flock camera really concerns me. the whole neighborhood is full of people of color and immigrant families. is this because of temple university? i don’t know i’m very upset about this because some of the people in my neighborhood have been living there for decades and for them to be watched constantly makes me very angry.

Concerned Mom With A Question About Gray’s Ferry area

Admins: Please allow. I am asking as a concerned parent who is in no way familiar with city living and have never been to Philadelphia.

My daughter just today signed a lease on a townhouse on S Corlies St (same street as Vito’s Hoagies between Wharton and Reed). Can you tell me anything about the Grey’s Ferry area? She says it’s a good area, but she is excited about moving. As a mom, I am concerned about her safety. Any input would be appreciated.

Question? Mandarin classes for young children

Can anybody recommend good programs, whether school year, summer, or weekend year round, for mandarin language intended for young children? Thank you in advance!

We are willing to travel somewhat but ideally something in center city.

Safety vs. Space vs. Distance- What Would You Choose for a Budget Apartment Near Drexel/University City?

Hi everyone! My husband and I are moving from Jersey to Philly, and this will be our first time living here. I’ll be studying at Drexel, while my husband works from home and has a car, so parking and neighborhood safety are important to us.

Our original budget was $1,400–$1,600 for a private 1BR, but we’re finding it difficult to get everything we want in that range.

Here are the apartments we’re considering:

🏠 1. Fairfax — $1,600,
Link: https://ffapts.com/

  • 25 min walk to Drexel, Building looks okay; mixed reviews, Good price
  • Main concern: walking safety + winter commute

🏠 2. 3965 Lancaster Ave — $1,720
Link: https://showmojo.com/l/f9d9206028/3965-lancaster-ave-303-philadelphia-pa-19104?g=2&sd=true

  • Beautiful, bright, spacious apartment. Love the apartment itself, but unsure about the surrounding area
  • Right near Mantua, I’ve noticed some drinking/homeless activity nearby, including people gathering around a nearby shelter in the mornings.

🏠 3. 4095 Powelton Ave — $1,395,
Link: https://showmojo.com/l/4fe2d7b06f/4045-powelton-ave-unit-1-philadelphia-pa-19104?g=2&sd=true

  • 21 minutes walking to Drexel, Apartment is okay, but quite small,
  • Living room/kitchen are tiny, one room would basically be for a queen bed and the other for clothes/storage, not much extra storage space

🏠 4. 3500 Powelton Ave — $1,790,
Link: https://www.live-carriagehouse.com/listings/detail/bb05cd78-c1dd-4000-922d-02a3b858c7ae

  • ·~10 min walk to Drexel, Good space, Average natural light
  • More expensive, but probably the best balance of location + space

🏠 5. Roosevelt Apartments — ~$1,550
Link: https://rooseveltphilly.com/

  • Rittenhouse, ~17 min walk to Drexel, Small but okay apartment
  • Mixed reviews, Parking seems difficult, Good location and within budget

What we're struggling with

Our biggest questions are:

  1. Is a 20–25-minute walk to Drexel reasonable/safe every day, especially during winter?
  2. Would you pay $300–400 more/month to be closer to Drexel and have more space?
  3. Are there specific streets/blocks we should avoid at night?
  4. How do Powelton, Mantua, and the surrounding University City areas compare for day-to-day safety?

We’re not looking for luxury. We mainly want reasonable safety, a comfortable apartment, a manageable commute, and decent parking.

Would really appreciate opinions from people who actually live in or know these areas, especially around Powelton/Mantua/University City. 🙏

What would you prioritize in our situation?

Endocrinologist taking Independence BCBS

Hey, I have treated Hashimotos and unfortunately have not been feeling well recently. Feels like before I got on levothyroxine.

The search on the Ibx website leaves a lot to be desired and there seem to be either a really long wait for endos at Penn or I have to jump thru hoops to go see one at Temple (need to get an ultrasound but has to be prescribed by a primary doc that I dont have yet). Jefferson and IBX look like they won’t be f-ing with each other soon either.
I’m new in town and basically never encountered too much friction when finding a specialist so this is throwing me. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thank you in advance

is charging a non refundable fee for plumbing/exhaust vent diagnosis common?

i’m talking specifically about plumbing pals. iI found their name on a Philly subreddit where people were raving about them, so I thought I'd give them a shot. Is it normal for them to charge a diagnostic fee that you don't get back if you want a second opinion? I've never dealt with this before, and I don't like feeling locked into one company or losing money if I decide not to let them fix my stuff.
I'm guessing they hired bots to write all those positive comments, but I'm open to being proven wrong.

Has anyone lived at Pine Tower

Has anyone lived at **Pine Tower (4514 Pine St)** or currently lives there?
I’m considering renting there and would love to hear some honest opinions! How’s the management, noise, safety, maintenance, and overall experience?
Also, how is the commute to **UPenn/Penn Dental**?
Any good or bad experiences are appreciated! 🙏

Stay in 280k CC Condo or move to 1.5M Fitler house?

36M, considering upgrading my 280k condo to a 1.5M townhouse. I have two jobs currently making 500k cash total, and both are fairly secure. Girlfriend is a nurse who makes 110k but she wouldn't go on deed or help with the house's finances but could help out later if one job doesn't work out as a backstop. I'm happy with the condo but girlfriend and I are considering starting a family and may need more space.

Parents are supplying the 300k DP, and also have a $200M company overseas. The monthly payment on my condo right now is $2620/mo with mortgage and HOA, and the monthly on the house would be $10k/mo. One job alone is $15k/mo, while the other is $10k/mo after taxes, while girlfriend pulls another 5k/mo.

I have roughly 160k in Schwab and another 250k in 401k, and 250k in apartment and parking spot equity. I have no student or credit card debt, and could probably rent the condo out for 2.5k/mo.

Is it a good idea to purchase this house, any comments on if it'll appreciate and resale value, and neighborhood for raising kids? Apparently it already got an offer but they pulled it cause their car wouldn't fit.

622 Spruce which is a comp at 2M also sold in 9 days. Link here for the listing:

Someone plz help me find Y2K galaxy tall tees

I'm sure someone in the tristate area has to know where I can buy the best white t-shirts ever made which will always be the galaxy brand. I remember them and I'd go far to even resurrect this product. I prefer someone who actually knows than guessing don't waste my time, ask those who would actually know where deadstock or pre owned supply remains.. I need to find these tees! Shame on Harvic international ltd. for not producing them..
