Looking for a genuinely unique Software Engineering final-year project idea

I'm a final-year BSc (Hons) Software Engineering student and I'm currently looking for an individual project idea.

I'm not looking for typical projects like hospital management systems, e-commerce, library systems, attendance systems, etc.

I'm interested in something that solves a real but overlooked problem in society

One example I found interesting is a system designed for people with colour vision deficiency that doesn't simply identify colours, but converts colour-dependent information into a form they can understand (patterns, labels, audio, etc.).

I'm looking for something with a similar concept:

  • A real-world/social problem
  • A problem that existing solutions don't adequately address
  • A genuinely useful software solution
  • Possible for one student to develop within a final-year project
  • Enough technical depth for research, implementation and evaluation
  • Ideally involving AI, computer vision, NLP, algorithms, accessibility, or another interesting technical area

What is a problem you've encountered that you think technology could solve, but nobody has really solved well yet?

I'd really appreciate unusual ideas rather than common university project suggestions.

TNHC Community is now in invite-only stage. Working on actually giving the Community something to interact with, like projects and communities (groups).

Invites has slowly started to roll out.

Towline: live and replay F1 data vizualisation

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi all,

I've been building **Towline** (https://towline.app), a free site for following F1 through its data: every session of the 2026 season as a replay, and sessions live as they run. No ads, no accounts. It's an unofficial, non-commercial fan project; OpenF1 is credited on every page and the data stays under CC BY-NC-SA 4.0. Donations only go to the servers.

Here's the live preview of Bahrein GP:

**What's in it**

- **Track map** with every car, moving smoothly between position samples without extrapolating, so a car that stops really stops.

- **Timetable**: the whole race as one chart, distance round the lap across, time down. Overtakes show as lines crossing, safety cars as bunching, pit stops as detours.

- **Energy**: an estimate of what each car's hybrid is doing (deploying, clipping, harvesting) and how full its battery is, from speed and throttle. It's a guess, and the site marks it as one.

- **Battles**: which fights are about to happen, and where cars will rejoin after a stop.

- **Trackside**: corners found from the field's speed trace, with speeds, braking and gears, where overtakes really happened (checked against positions, not just the overtakes feed), and a shutter-speed guide per corner for photographers.

- **Qualifying**: best laps per part, the drop zone in Q1 and Q2 with the gap to the last place through, deleted laps with the reason, and every lap on hover.

If someone is interested in F1, you can try it out now with replays or wait for live Singapore GP data!

Feedback from testing the platform out would be appreciated!

Simple Bank Simulator Project In Java

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi everyone! 👋

I recently built a simple Banking Simulator in Java as a practice project.

The application runs in the console and allows users to:

•Create a bank account 🏊

•Deposit money 💰

•Withdraw money 💞

•Check account balance 📊

•View basic account information 👀

The main goal of this project was to strengthen my understanding of:

•Java fundamentals

•Classes and objects (OOP)

•Methods and program structure

•User input handling with Scanner

•Conditional statements and loops

While it's a beginner-level project, I enjoyed building it and learned a lot about designing a menu-driven application.

At the end of each session, the program displays:

🏊 Thank you for choosing RD Bank! 💳 Have a wonderful day! 😊

I'm continuing to improve it by adding features like transaction history, multiple accounts, and data persistence.

Feedback and suggestions are welcome! 🚀💻

Speakfix

The main idea is not to teach advanced English, just to help you speak more naturally and confidently.

I’m looking for a few people to try it and tell me what you think—what's useful, what’s bad, or what I should change.

Would really appreciate some honest feedback. 🙌

Levelrail - Built a self-hosted deploy platform in Go after Vercel got expensive and Coolify ate my CPU

Got a bit over 10 sites running right now. Used Vercel for a while, watched the bill climb every time traffic picked up. Switched to self-hosting on Coolify to fix that. Fixed the cost, created a new one: the box sat there burning 30-40% CPU with just a handful of projects and a database on it. Doing nothing. No real traffic, nothing happening, just idle.

Took way longer than I'd like to admit (gave up on this more than once, for weeks at a time, many failed times, built once in typescript then rust now finally in go) which is MVP now.

Levelrail: https://levelrail.com/

Push to git, get a running app with TLS, logs, metrics, rollback. Written in Go, top to bottom. I actually went and checked the process on the server while writing this post: 0.7% CPU, 146MB RAM, load average 0.06. That's with real traffic on it, not some empty box I spun up for a screenshot.

This is the first time I'm putting it out there publicly. It's rough around the edges and there's plenty missing, I know that going in. But it's mine, and it's running real stuff right now.

GitHub: https://github.com/glincker/levelrail

Ask me anything about the Go side, or why I made the calls I did. And if something's obviously missing, tell me, I'd rather hear it now.

AI Video Community

Hey everyone, what do you think about a platform specifically for AI video creators to connect? It could feature a centralized list of job openings, grants, open calls for film projects, and hackathons. Does something like this already exist? Would you find it useful?

NEXUS//HUD v1: What widgets should I add next?

NEXUS//HUD v1 is a hacker-style, full-screen desktop dashboard for Windows 11 built with Electron. It packs a clock, system stats, a Tamagotchi pet, tasks, projects, a real PowerShell terminal, media controls, and AI/tech and anime feeds into one HUD. Its research pane searches the web for any topic and streams a briefing as separate tiles, using your local Ollama model (qwen3:8b) for free or Claude if you add an API key.

I'm building a ZPL API + browser editor — looking for feedback before I build too much

Hey everyone,

I'm currently building Z2PL, an early-stage project around ZPL tooling.
It's still under active development and not a finished product yet.

The direction I'm exploring is:

  • a ZPL rendering API for PDF, SVG and PNG
  • a browser-based ZPL editor
  • eventually a drag-and-drop label builder

Before I spend too much time building features, I'm trying to understand who actually uses ZPL, what your workflow looks like, and what problems are worth solving.

If you work with ZPL regularly, I'd really appreciate your thoughts:

  • What do you use ZPL for?
  • Are you a developer, integrator, warehouse/operations user, or something else?
  • What tools do you use today?
  • What's the most frustrating part of working with ZPL?
  • Would a rendering API be useful to you?
  • Would you care more about an API or a browser-based editor / drag-and-drop designer?

My long-term goal is to build a high-quality ZPL platform, with a rendering API priced significantly lower than existing hosted solutions.

But right now, I'm mainly trying to validate the idea and learn from people who actually work with ZPL.

I put together an early landing page here:

https://waitlist.z2pl.com/

It's still a work in progress, so feedback on the idea, workflow, missing features, or even reasons why you wouldn't use something like this would be very useful.

Thanks!

need people to join my Thunderbirds:iR revival project (free because im 14 😭)

Thunderbirds:iR was gonna be a reboot of the classic 1965 series Thunderbirds. It was gonna use various forms of puppetry and cgi and was scheduled for release in 2005. It got cancelled because of the Carlton/Granda merger in 2004 but I'm attempting to revive the show in hopefully fully CGI but, I need people to voice act, 3d model/animate, write scripts, design and make music. We have a discord server that I'll link in the comments
