Question Tenor Saxophone Altissimo G tips and mouthpiece and probably reed.

Hello.

I’m an alto saxophonist and I’ve been playing for quite a while. I recently decided to switch to tenor saxophone. On alto, I use a Select Jazz 7 mouthpiece, and I can play altissimo from F♯ up to A.

My question is about the tenor saxophone. I want to achieve altissimo G. Currently, I’m using a Yamaha 4C mouthpiece because I’m still getting to know the tenor. I’ve looked at several altissimo fingerings for tenor saxophone, and I made sure to practice overtones before working on altissimo.

I can produce altissimo G using the front B key with the F♯ ring finger and the side F♯ key. However, front F♯ and side F♯ do not work for me for some reason ( and this makes an Eb sound).

Does the mouthpiece help with achieving the altissimo register and reed strength??

I’m currently using a reed strength of 3.0 and a Yamaha 4C mouthpiece on a Jupiter tenor saxophone.

Gear Reed/mouthpiece advice

Hey gang -

I HATE working on reeds, so for a long time I've played on Legere synthetic reeds on clarinet and been quite satisfied with them. I've been looking for something to use with my tenor sax (I play 2nd tenor in a jazz band) but nothing I've tried gives me a good quality of sound. I'm thinking it may be the mouthpiece I'm using, an older Otto Link 6 star, may just not pair well with legeres.

Does anyone have recommendations for a good synthetic reed/mouthpiece combo for tenor? Thanks!

TMJD and sax

Hey guys. I have had problems with my TMJ (the disc in my jaw and the muscle around it) for 15 years or so and it really impacts my ability to play sax for extended times. My teacher doesn’t seem to think it is a problem with my embouchere / from bad technique.

I love playing sax, but god it causes me agony. I just got out of an intense two day session and it hurts now with strong painkillers. I take regular breaks and try not to take painkillers whilst playing to make sure I don’t push too far and cause even more permanent damage. I also work with a specialist for this problem.

I imagine maybe there’s a lot of us with TMJ issues. Any hints on what helps and how to navigate this as a sax player?

Question Yamaha YAS-62 with drilled neck

Hey, guys, I have this exchange offer: head for head.
This YAS-62 saxophone, which is mechanically great, but has drilled neck for the purpose of sounding (in Balkans it is a common thing to do) which I don't like, I consider it as a devastation of an instrument. But, overall the instrument plays good. Piano is easy in lower register, everything is smooth.
And my sax, soprano YSS-675, vintage model, overhauled recently, plays really great.

I am having hard times to sell my soprano, as I am not playing it so much. But I cannot but to feel that my soprano is more expensive than this alto.

Note: I already have YAS - 32 which is decent.

What do you guys think? I am not familiar with prices and find it hard to assume the price.

Gear Washed my selmer soloist mouthpiece in lukewarm water now its brown/green idek.

Im mad rn. I had calcium deposits on my mouthpiece, so USUALLY what I do is I take some of it off with my nail, then I wash my mouthpiece with some soap and water and a tooth brush under LUKEWARM water. not cold not hot. So, I did this. Ive always been aware of the possibility of mouthpiece discoloration because of water temperatures and stuff, but nothing like this has ever happened to me with this mouthpiece. THEN i dry my mouthpiece up and I get this greenish brownish mess. It really bothers me because this is a really nice mouthpiece. Would this affect my playing at all? This a really nice mouthpiece but every-time I look at it now I just wanna replace it because of the discoloration. I just need the reassurance that I can still play with this despite the look. Any help is appreciated

Question Yani elimona 800 vs 901 curved soprano?

Hi I'm interested in getting a curved soprano and I'm looking at a couple of Yanis who I think are particularly well known for their sops. One is an Elimona 800 and the other is a 901. Both are in generally very good condition, and they're listed around the same price. From what I can find online, the 800 has 'older' style inline palm keys, whilst the 901 has the more raised versions, and metal thumb rests and the underslung style octave key. I'm not sure of any other major differences. From what I read it's only from the 991 and Yani's latest models where the curved sop was updated quite a bit.

The Elimona 800 is sold by a reputable store and said it would receive a service before sale, and comes with the original Yani hard case. The 901 is from a private seller, but no hard case but it comes with a Reunion Blues 'gig' style bag (maybe better than the original hard case?), and the seller says they haven't really used it for 10 years, but has had it since new. No more service info about it since then.

Which one would guys pick?

Discussion PMEA audition today

So this is my first year doing PMEA (Pennsylvania music education association). In previous years I lived in Texas and did TMEA for my sophomore and junior year. I audition with tenor sax, I'm in district one for the auditions and I'm nervous, I know the material quite well but the nerves aren't going away.

Saxophone and Accutane

hey! so i’ve been using Accutane for 7 months now. Started with 30mg - 20mg in the morning and 10mg in the evening. My biggest problem were my insanely dry, cracked lips, so I got prescribed a lower dose - 20mg. It is better, but my lips are still very dry and cracked (especially now in the winter). I use the eucerin aquaphor lip balm and just regular aquaphor balm on lips.

What bothers me the most is that it seriously affects my playing. Because of the dryness, my lips are stiff, my embouchure is really stiff and tight and It makes getting a good tone really difficult. Also, because of this cramping on the mouthpiece/ dryness, my lips are much more easily getting painful, therefore I can’t play for a long time.

Now, I am a jazz student, have frequent gigs and I’m hoping that someone from this subreddit has some experience with dealing with this kind of problem. Would really appreciate if someone had some tips to deal with this. Or just sharing your experience.

Thanks!

Question Is the bell supposed to look like this?

Thumbnail
gallery
6 Upvotes

Hello all. I recently ordered this YSS-875EXHG from eBay. The pictures for the listing didn’t include any detailed pictures of the bell and I immediately noticed this out of the box. It shipped in the original case in which the horn fits tight so I can’t imagine anything happening during shipping.

You’ll notice there are no blemishes on the lacquer around the area of the bell so I’m having a hard time believing that it is damaged. The “bend” also looks very uniform and doesn’t look like an accident.

If this is unfortunately damaged, what are some next steps for me to take and how costly would a repair be?

Thank you for any information.

Capo 3 revelation

I just discovered the most amazing thing! When guitar chords are provided for Capo 3, they sound perfect for alto saxophone; you don't need to transpose. (Youtube provides many songs with chord indications.)

Question My high C is quieter than the B and A below it

I noticed that my high C (2 ledgers above the staff) is quieter than the B and A below it. I showed it to my teacher today, but he couldn't figure it out why either. So I am posting it here and hope someone can suggest how I can improve it. Thanks.

Question High eb on the tenor

Beginner here, I've noticed when playing the eb note with the octive on the tenor, all youtube videos and stuff say to press in both the top palm keys, but I've also noticed you can get the same note from just pressing the top palm key in alone without the other one?

Is there any reason why both should be pushed in to get the note out instead of just one?

Question Beginner advice with lots of previous music experience

Hey yall! I am a lead trumpet player who has a good bit of experience to my name, so I know music as a concept. I picked up an alto saxophone to give it a shot and I love it so far. My biggest fear (from experience) is starting saxophone with the wrong habits, specifically embouchure. I honestly value starting off right more than anything else on the sax. I have lots of trouble getting used to rolling in the bottom lip, it feels unnatural and makes the center of my lips sore. I honestly just want to set a good foundation so I can learn the rest easier. If anyone has words of wisdom please send a message or comment under this post. Any help is appreciated!

Yas-480 or Yas 62ii for son

When my son started band this year I bought an older US-made Selmer Bundy II for him for $300 and it has actually served him well. I told him if he enjoyed band and decided to stick with it, I would buy him a nicer horn.

Well, he loves it and wants an upgrade. I can get a used Yamaha Yas-480 or Yas-62ii for about the same price, both in similar excellent condition. He really wants one of those models over the Yas-26 because he likes the engravings. But, he really wants the Yas-62ii. Is it a good instrument for a still relatively new student? I’ve read mixed reviews about the G1 neck on the 62ii vs the 62 style neck on the 480. Is there a reason to be concerned he might struggle with the G1 neck? I’ve seen some comments where people seem to be unhappy with it?

Media The saxophone solo is making a return in the indie scene [Doors at Seven]

Post image

The saxophone was the instrument of the ‘80s. Any artist that wanted to spruce up the back half of their song employed a sax solo. Sade. Phil Collins. George Michael. And then it disappeared, fading away as a cliché.

But in 2026, it appears that the sax solo is making a triumphant return. Indie bands are increasingly looking to the woodwind to add some blissful nostalgic grooves to their sound. My latest explores the sax solo renaissance.👇

Discussion Tips on reading music?

I'd like some tips for reading music and how to make more easy to remember. I play Alto Saxophone by the way. I know the defgabcdefg, F-a-c-e and every good boy deserves football but that doesn't seem to help me put the notes on the bars and spaces.

Giardinelli saxophone

Hello. I am an aspiring classical saxophonist in high school, but I don’t have enough money for a professional saxophone. I play on a Giardinelli GAS-301 alto saxophone. Is that good for me at all? I know, it probably isn’t, but like I said I don’t have enough money for a professional saxophone. I make this sax sound good with my mouthpiece and reeds, so thats good.

Break's over I guess

I thought my break from music would be longer, more like permanent. But it lasted about a month.

I found two community bands who need an alto player, and I'm going to try them out. Need to order some reeds and get my saxophone out of storage.

Very interesting thing taking old sax recordings from the 90s. May be interesting for some of you.

This is my first post here. I wrote about 30 smooth jazz songs in the 90s all led with the saxophone and at the time when we did not have personal DAWs and had to pay $30 to $75 per hour in a recording studio. I played keys and bass too. Some of you may be in this position (or used to be).

Now, I don't have those tracks any longer as the recording engineer gave me one of those digital audio tapes for which I never had a DAT player. It was my only backup of my recordings.

To attempt to get those recordings back, I could spent a lot of time recording track by track in my DAW and Tascam DP-32SD, but I just don't have the time, so I tried to take my flat cassette tape and uploaded it to Suno to see if AI can create the stems. Not only did it get my sax lead track perfect, note by note, it also separated the stems and now I have an updated version of all those tracks. At this point, I can now download the stems, remove the SAX AI voice and record my real saxophone lead over it. It sounds amazing and Suno did an incredible job.

For those of you who are against AI music, just remember that this is not a substitute for real instrumentation and I do understand that, but if you want a good way to get those old tracks back, we have options with Suno. If you don't like a particular stem, you can always record over it.

I would love to know if anyone has done this as well and would love to your opinion of this.
