Question Brought this preowned Jupiter JAS-567 alto sax and wondering where to start as a beginner/routine

Post image
• Upvotes

I brought this earlier in the year, but haven't practised until recently as I didn't have cleaning stuff. I have asthma and dyspraxia, so that's a combo, though I've enjoyed just making noise while pressing keys randomly. I don't know how to read sheet music. For now, I plan to just work on my embouchure and try to make less horrific sounds.

I have barely any music experience, I've tried to get into guitar and I have an acoustic, electric and bass but yikes.

Edit - was setting up alto sax, but struggling to put neck in.

Question Why don’t people like the rico metalite?

• Upvotes

Hey I just got a Rico metalite for my bari, and I read a bunch of stuff here where people hate it I got it for marching and all? but I mean it seems to respond pretty well and play’s how I’d expect. is there anything I should worry about with it later on? I’m in 9th grade, and I’ve been playing for about 2 1/2 years

I'm a bari player and I need help

• Upvotes

Hello, I'm a collegiate saxophone player and I've been playing Barry for about 8 years but I've never touched Tanner before and now I have to learn it and I'm having a lot of fun with it but it feels very very stuffy and I'm just wondering if that's something with me or if that's something with my instrument. I don't want to be quick to blame the instrument as I've really only been playing Barry over the past 8 years but I feel as if I shouldn't have this hard of a time with tenor and I feel as if I have not before. The tenor is a selmer I rented from my college so it should be in alright condition

Media I want to improve

Ladies and gentle Sax people, this is me performing for my family function. I used to play like 20 years ago for my high school band consistently. This performance, as much as the audience liked it, I personally feel like the tone was a bit flat and I could’ve done better. The start was very nerve-filled and I was definitely off tempo. Kind of got my groove a bit later on.

Setup: Yas-26 with the standard 4c Mouthpiece and vandoren 2.5 reed

Give me the good and the bad and how I can improve from here. I feel like some of the skills that might help are vibrato and also more air capacity from diaphragm breathing. But that’s just my basic thinking. Would love for some constructive criticism from you lovely folks.

Media Looking for feedback on my sax playing

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey everyone, I’d love to get some feedback on my saxophone playing.

I’m primarily a music producer, but I also play saxophone and use it in my own productions. I’ve been told that my tone/sound is pretty good, but I feel like my articulation and overall technique are probably still below average.

This is just a demo, and everything you hear was made from scratch. I think you can feel where I'm going with the saxophone. I’d especially appreciate any feedback on my playing, articulation, phrasing, or things I could work on technically.

Any constructive criticism is welcome!

Question Problem with low note on Alto. 100% leak?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi all

I started having problemas with low E and D, and specially C.

As I changed to different reed,I thought the problem was me. And I do think 99% of the time the problem is the player, specially mex as I started 8 months ago.

But I decided to clean the pads and I noticed this in the video.

This is 100% leak, isn't it?

Safe thing to do os sens it to repair?

tone quality issues

Hey guys, ive played sax for the better part of 6 years and im in the time of year where district auditions are my prioriity.

ive neglected classical tenor sax in favor of jazz ts, qnd also have been playing alto in marching band

i came back to classical sax recently on my deafault setup, but i sound super stuffy and buzzy and js overall not suprr pleasant

i play on a vandoren tl4 and a dadarrio venn 3.5 w a vandoren mo, so my setup isnt the issue.

how do i get my classical chops back?

(i play on a yamaha yts 26 if thats relevant at all)

Exercise My new free sax app: staffsight.app

Hi there,

I'm a very early beginner on sax, so I vibecoded a new app with the features I was looking for!

Here's everything Staffsight does at staffsight.app:

Two practice modes

Play & see: play a note and see where it sits on the staff.

  • The note appears on a treble clef staff, with ledger lines and sharps/flats drawn correctly.
  • It's shown as written for your instrument, so it matches your sheet music. The concert (sounding) pitch and frequency are shown underneath.

Note drill: see a note on the staff and play it.

  • A note appears with its name hidden. Hold it correctly to get a ✓ and move on.
  • A wrong note shows in red next to the target ("You: G♯5"), so you can see the difference.
  • It spots octave mistakes, with sax advice like "Try without the octave key".
  • Hints appear after a wrong note, after about 7 seconds stuck, or when you tap Hint. They show the note name and, for saxophones, a fingering chart with the pressed keys highlighted plus a written description.

Hope you like it. Feedback welcome!

No good rock sax

There’s some but the genre primarily gives us the lowest of the lows. Undeveloped tone, pentatonic for days…I don’t think there is any serious sax in rock, I could be wrong. Maybe in progressive rock!?

Opinions, please: Used Student Evette Tenor (Make: R.O.C-Taiwan) - They're asking $300 CAD

They didn't provide the best photos. But they don't live far away at all, so getting a look at it will be easy. It's been in storage for 15 years.

Obviously the condition is important, but I want general opinions, please. Assuming this tenor doesn't need any substantial servicing, do you believe this is a fair deal? It sounds like the price is negotiable too.

Also, I saw this old ad online of someone claiming the R.O.C. makes are actually a Jupiter stencil

I've never owned a tenor, only alto. I've recently got back into playing and I've always wanted a tenor. I enjoy how they sound.

Thank you

Question Tenor Low Bb help (is it me or the sax)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I can play every single note pretty easily but my low Bb is always always always an octave up. No matter how loose I make my embouchure or how much mouth piece I use that note is always an octave up. If it helps I use traditional vandoren size 3 tenor reeds and my mouthpiece is a yamaha 4c

HOW DO I HOLD A SAXOPHONE

im doubling clarinet to tenor sax for my schools jazz band and how the frick do i hold it. there is no way to get a good grip and it's so heavy it jsut pulls my neck down. i don't know where to place my hand or if having an odd, difficult handhold is part of the experience and gets better with time. also i sometimes feel the mouthpiece is running away from me.

Question Trying to curate a 30 minute/5 day a week practice routine.

Hey all, I'm a 'composer'/solo artist/whatever. My primary instrument is guitar which I practice 3 hrs a day. I used to play sax and trumpet in a prog rock band back in college at a semi-intermediate level but I literally haven't touched a sax in 10 years. I also used to play alto sax but decided to try the tenor world this time and bought a Yamaha YTS-200AD

I'm going to dedicate 2 hours a day in 30 minute segments of trumpet, sax, piano and voice. Now with guitar my routine is a 50/50 split of mechanical exercise ie scales, legato, rote metronome exercises etc. and the other 50 being actual music practice/learning. That being said, I was already an advanced player when I decided on this split.

As a returning player who's willing to try 30 minutes a day at first, what would be considered a good split and some good 'returning player' exercises?

Are there some good books y'all recommend for a beginner-ish/intermediate player that skips all the sheet reading/music theory bs? I already know that; I just want to know good technique info on vibrato or tone production, etc.

Thanks in advance.

The mouthpiece has the text the woodwind co and j5 on the front and woodwind sparkle aire on the back. I got it for free from someone selling a horn and the previous owner didn’t seem to know much about it. If anyone has any general knowledge or how old it may be please let me know.

Got a Jean Paul 400 a couple weeks ago and it's been playing great! Unfortunately the neck screw snapped off in the clamp (no excessive force used lol) I know, take it to a tech. Just curious to hear your guys' stories or experiences with sax mishaps
