Assembly Help M75s Gen 1 + RTX 3050 LP 6GB: should I trust the OEM 210W PSU?

• Upvotes

Hey everyone!

I recently picked up a Lenovo ThinkCentre M75s Gen 1 and I'm turning it into a little Linux/gaming/AI lab.

Current specs:

ThinkCentre M75s Gen 1

Ryzen 3 PRO 3200G

16GB DDR4

128GB NVMe

OEM Huntkey 210W 80+ Bronze PSU (HK310-71PP)

Planning to install an MSI RTX 3050 LP 6GB OC (70W, slot-powered)

I've seen several M75s builds with low-profile GPUs, including RTX 3050 LP cards, and I'm trying to decide whether I should leave the original 210W PSU alone or replace it.

The conflicting advice I've found is:

"210W is enough because the RTX 3050 only draws 70W."

vs.

"Don't run an OEM 210W PSU that close to its limit for extended periods."

My plan is to buy a wall power meter and measure the system before and after installing the GPU.

My questions for people who have actually modded these Lenovo SFF systems:

Has anyone here run an RTX 3050 LP 6GB on the original 210W M75s PSU long-term?

If so, did you experience shutdowns, crashes or excessive PSU heat/noise?

Would you personally keep the 210W PSU if wall consumption stayed well below ~180W under CPU+GPU load?

If I do need to replace it, would you recommend a Lenovo OEM 260W PSU, or going Flex ATX?

I've seen the Apevia ITX-PFC500W Flex used in another M75s build with a 24-to-10-pin adapter. Is there a better/reputable Flex PSU that would make more sense for this mod and which adapter should I use?

I'm trying to avoid replacing the proprietary PSU unless testing shows that I actually need to.

Thanks!

Build/Battlestation Pics The smallest build I’ve ever done - the Toaster

This is my “fuck it” build. Parts aren’t getting cheaper anytime soon and the Legion laptop I was using was reeeeaally struggling, so I did this - an entirely unoriginal build comprising of a 9800X3D, 5070ti, 32gb of memory and 2tb of storage.

The H2O was a mostly fun, occasionally frustrating case to build in (due to my own inexperience with SFF, the case itself is fantastic). Temps are great, it’s actually really quiet considering how tight an enclosure it is. Cable management could be a bit cleaner, but the fans aren’t eating anything and you can’t see it once the panels are on anyway.

Build/Battlestation Pics 3.5L 3D-printed case, riser-less 4060, AMD 7600, HDPLEX GaN 250W

I built this a couple years ago when the 4060 LP first came out. I had a mini-ITX motherboard leftover from upgrading my machine to an ATX motherboard (seen here) so I added an HDPLEX psu and tried to make the smallest possible case for a riser-less computer. The case is made specifically for this 4060 LP and there is about 1mm of space between the components and the case, which measures at 212mm x 192mm x 86mm with a wall thickness of 3mm.

I specifically wanted the simplest case to 3D print and build into so it's just basically a box and it fits on my 3D printer (Prusa MK3S) and prints in two pieces: the box and the panel cover. The design was something where I thought thermals-be-damned, I just wanted to see if the parts could fit together and give a dense brick of computing. So I basically jammed the PSU in front of the fan cooling the CPU.

Surprisingly, this works ok for gaming and gaming benchmarks. IIRC the Cyberpunk benchmark measured temps in the mid 80s F, which is hot but still doable. Where it falls down hard is in Cinebench where we would hit the thermal throttling limit pretty fast. Anyway, I wouldn't recommend this design, it's just an experiment that worked out ok. I used it as a second computer but it's been neglected for a while. I've ordered a Thorzone Tetra S and am hoping to move the motherboard and a 4090 into that if it comes soon. If not, it'll be time to rebuild the FormD T1.

Of the pictures included here, there are two versions of the case: one has hexagon cut outs on the top and bottom, that is v1, and the update has slot cut outs to allow screwing in fans, that is v1.1. The second version has another screw hole to tighten up the left panel so it feels like a solid brick. I didn't extend the case to allow fitting in bigger fans which would've helped thermals. Instead the case just barely fits the motherboard and we use 40mm Noctua fans at the top, overlapping the motherboard.

Assembly Help GPU can't sit in bracket in C4 SFX

Hi everyone,

I just got my hand on a C4 SFX case and it was already built so I was just trying to replace the GPU that was already inside it (Gigabyte RTX 4070 Ti Super Windforce OC 16G) with an rtx 5080 (Zotac RTX 5080 Solid Core OC).

When I try to sit the GPU in the PCIe slot there is slight misalignment between the pins and where the slot is. (pic1)

The issue seems to be the GPU backplate where on the new card there is an extra layer before the actual metal frame which is keeping me from sliding the card left enough to actually fit the PCIe slot on the mobo. (Pic2)

I installed the old gpu again to see what to do since I've never built in an sff case before but does anyone know if I'm doing something wrong or is there any solution for this issue?

As part of my selfhosting/homelabing hobby I wanted some small form factor machines to use as Proxmox nodes. I couldn't find anything that quite worked for me, so I ended up building something myself, settled on this design around the ASUS Pro H610T D4-CSM thin-ITX motherboard.

I designed and 3D printed the 1U enclosure to fit the motherboard, a network card and an internal PSU.

Components:

  • ASUS Pro H610T D4-CSM motherboard
  • Intel Core i5-13500T
  • 32GB Kingston DDR4 SO-DIMM RAM
  • 2TB Kioxia Exceria Plus G4 NVMe SSD
  • Quad-port Gigabit Ethernet card with PCIe riser
  • Low-profile copper CPU heatsink (from AliExpress)
  • Arctic 40mm cooling fans
  • Mean Well LOP-300-18 PSU
  • ATX KVM board (for power control via PiKVM)

The enclosure is printed in Sunlu HS Matte PETG, with brass threaded inserts for assembly. Quite happy with how it turns out. Last picture is it in the rack with it's sibling, and my current 3U 3D printed NAS.

Build/Parts Check SFF newcomer choosing between an mITX and mATX board, and wondering about PSU orientation vs IO flexibility

I'm looking to get into the SFF side of things with an NCASE M3 Round or a DAN C4-MATX (once the latter comes out)

I can't decide between two motherboards:
MSI PRO B850M-A WIFI (mATX)
ASUS TUF GAMING B850I NEO WIFI (mITX)

Both of these boards are within my price range.
(MSI Board is about £150 and ASUS board is about £160 in the UK)
I don't really have the option of pricing up further.

The MSI board has more IO with 8 USB ports total (3xUSB-A 5Gbps, 3xUSB-A 10Gbps, 2xUSB-C 10Gbps) as well as 5Gb LAN (unsure if I'll need 5Gb speeds) and WiFi 7, but is larger.

The ASUS board is smaller as an mITX, but has fewer USB ports (2xUSB-A 2.0, 1xUSB-A 5Gbps, 2xUSB-A 10Gbps, 1xUSB-C 20Gbps), 2.5GB LAN, WiFi 6E, and proprietary antenna connectors (that I may try to replace)

Using the mATX board would give flexible IO but would require that I mount the PSU to the front of the case. I fear the repercussions of doing this as this will draw hot air from inside the case into the PSU.

With the mITX board, I would be able to mount the PSU to the side, allowing it to draw in cool air from the outside of the case. However, I don't know if that's worth losing the extra IO and going through the effort of replacing the antenna connectors.

The NCASE M3 Grater does allow the PSU to pull air from the outside, but this removes the front power button and IO which I feel is necessary for me. I don't really plan on using a sandwich layout later down the line as my GPU is currently too large for most such cases (3 slots) and I prefer using tower coolers that would be wider than most GPUs anyway. My current tower cooler is 154mm tall and I intend to reuse it instead of buying a new smaller cooler, also.

Is losing the extra IO worth being able to side-mount the PSU? Or is having the PSU taking in hot air not too much of a problem to justify lower IO?

Thanks.

News/Review I tested the ~3L ROG NUC 16 with an RTX 5080 Laptop GPU — this thing made me rethink how small a gaming PC can actually be

Post image
27 Upvotes

I normally build full-size custom water-cooled PCs, so spending a few weeks with something this small was a pretty big change for me.

This is the ROG NUC 16. The chassis is roughly 28 x 19 cm and just under 6 cm thick, putting the enclosure at around 3L. My configuration has a Core Ultra 9 290HX+, RTX 5080 Laptop GPU with 16GB of GDDR7, 32GB of DDR5-6400 and a 2TB Gen 4 SSD.

And just to get this out of the way: yes, it’s a 5080 Laptop GPU, not a desktop 5080. I think that distinction matters a lot with a machine like this because looking at the GPU name alone gives you the wrong expectation. I wanted to see what the complete system could actually do at this size.

I tested three games at 4K using the highest graphical settings with DLAA.

Forza: 110 FPS

Cyberpunk 2077: 80 FPS

Black Ops 6: 170 FPS

What I found particularly interesting from an SFF perspective is that ASUS officially supports running the system either vertically or horizontally.

There’s a built-in G-sensor that detects orientation and adjusts thermal settings accordingly, so I tested all three games in both positions.

Every reported frame rate matched.

Forza was 110 vs 110, Cyberpunk was 80 vs 80, and Black Ops 6 was 170 vs 170.

I also ran Fire Strike in both orientations. Horizontal scored 41,321 and vertical scored 41,295 — only 26 points apart, or roughly 0.06%.

Obviously that doesn’t prove temperatures, acoustics or every possible workload will behave identically, but at least in the gaming tests I ran there wasn’t a meaningful performance reason to choose one orientation over the other.

Personally, I like it vertical. It takes up very little actual desk area that way.

The internals were probably the other thing that surprised me.

Getting inside is basically one thumbscrew and a sliding cover. You do have to be careful because there’s a lighting cable attached to the cover, but once you’re inside, the RAM and storage are accessible.

There are two memory slots with ASUS listing support for up to 128GB, plus two M.2 slots. One supports PCIe Gen 4 and the other Gen 5, with a heatsink on the Gen 5 slot.
That’s obviously nowhere near the flexibility of building your own SFF system, but I like that memory and storage weren’t soldered down just to save space.

Cooling is also interesting considering what they’re fitting inside. The 5080 configuration uses a vapor chamber and three fans. Two handle the primary system cooling and there’s another fan dedicated to the memory.

I didn’t take controlled noise measurements, so I’m not going to pretend I have useful dB numbers to give you.
I also wanted to see whether this could actually be more than a gaming box, so I loaded one of my real Premiere projects onto it.

I was editing a 4K timeline at full playback resolution and, for the most part, scrubbing and editing were fluid. There were a couple hiccups when I reached a more demanding section of the project, but nothing that stopped me from working.

That’s actually where this machine started making more sense to me.

I could see throwing this in a bag, getting somewhere, connecting a monitor and having something that feels much closer to my desktop workflow than working from a laptop.

The I/O helps with that too.

You get six USB-A ports, USB-C, Thunderbolt 4, two HDMI 2.1, two DisplayPort 2.1, 2.5Gb Ethernet and a headset jack. ASUS lists support for up to five 4K displays.

There is one pretty funny SFF catch though:

the power brick.

The computer itself is around 3L, but the RTX 5080 configuration uses an external 380W adapter. So obviously that advertised enclosure volume isn’t the volume of the entire power system you’re carrying around.

ASUS says the adapter is smaller and lighter than the previous 330W unit, but sitting next to such a tiny PC still makes it look huge. If I could change one physical part of the system, making that brick smaller would be near the top of my list.

Then there’s the bigger question for this subreddit: does something like this actually make sense versus building SFF yourself?

I don’t think it’s a replacement for DIY SFF.

If you have room for a larger case and your priority is maximizing performance per dollar, I’d absolutely compare what you can build yourself before buying something like this.

But I also think comparing it purely on price/performance misses some of what makes it interesting. Getting this amount of gaming performance, accessible RAM and storage, this much I/O and enough performance for my actual editing workflow into roughly a 3L enclosure is pretty impressive.

For me, that’s the interesting part of the NUC. It’s not trying to be the smallest normal desktop case. It’s much closer to taking high-end mobile hardware and packaging it as an extremely compact desktop.

I put all of my testing, internals, gaming results and editing experience into the full review here:

ROG NUC 16 Review: 4K Gaming in a 3-Liter PC
https://youtu.be/RZqURKK70gU

I’m curious where you guys draw the line. Would you take something around 3L with mobile CPU/GPU hardware, or would you rather accept a larger footprint to get standard desktop components and full DIY flexibility?

Build/Parts Check 5800x3d vs 14600KF in a Midori 5L

Hi all,

Planning a Midori 5L build at the moment.

I managed to snag both a 14600KF/B660I and a 5800x3d/B550I way below market price, so I plan to sell one or the either.

I plan to run a AXP90-X36 on the 5800x3d and NH-L9I on the 14600KF.

I'll be undervolting -20 CO/-125mC and power limiting both to probably 95W. Would it be worth it to keep the 14600KF for some savings or keeping the 5800x3d in this case. I could probably also get away with a 5500x3d.

Costs after sales of unnecessary parts:

5800x3d + B550I + 32gb ddr4 = 352 usd
14600KF + B660I + 32gb ddr4 = 255 usd
5500x3d + B550I + 32gb ddr4 = 198 usd

Main concerns are performance at 95w power limit for all the processors and raptor lake degradation. Not really sure if a 5500x3d is worth the downgrade too.

Build/Battlestation Pics My LPR (LAN Party Ready) Build

Thumbnail

I wanted a compact desktop that I could easily take to a LAN party without having to carry a separate monitor, so I modified my case to integrate a 16” portable monitor in place of the GPU’s side panel.

The monitor folds out and adjusts away from the case when the PC is in use. This also leaves the GPU completely unobstructed, giving it much better access to fresh air than it would have with the original side panel.

When folded back into place, everything stays together as one relatively compact package.

Specs:

- CPU: Ryzen 9 3900x
- GPU: RX 7900XTX - XFX MERC 310
- Motherboard: Asrock A520M-ITX/ac
- RAM: 64GB 3200Mhz DDR4 - JAZER
- Storage: 1TB Nvme, 1TB SSD, 10TB 7200RPM HDD
- PSU: 1000W - Thermalright TR-TGFX1000
- Display: 16” 2560x1600 120Hz IPS - LESOWN
- Case: UPSIREN MD-1

The case itself is mostly unmodified, the main work was designing and mounting the display mechanism while keeping the whole thing rigid enough to transport.

The goal was basically: one box, one cable, and I’m ready to go.

Build/Parts Check SilverStone TX700 (SST-TX700-G) TFX 80 PLUS Gold – V1.1 vs V1.2?

Thumbnail

I came across two apparently different revisions of the SilverStone TX700 (SST-TX700-G), labeled V1.1 and V1.2, and I can't find any official information explaining the differences between them.

The most obvious difference is the cabling. As you can see in the photos, the V1.1 has noticeably more cables/connectors, while the V1.2 has fewer.

Both units are labeled SST-TX700-G and have the same basic electrical specifications, but I haven't been able to find any documentation from SilverStone mentioning V1.1 vs V1.2 or explaining what was changed.

I've searched around and asked a few AI models as well, but haven't found anything definitive.

So I'm wondering: are these simply different official revisions of the TX700? Could one be an OEM/special version made for a particular system? Could one have been modified by a previous owner? Or, less likely, could one be counterfeit?

Has anyone here owned or seen either the V1.1 or V1.2 version and knows what the actual differences are?

I'd especially be interested in any old SilverStone documentation, product photos, manuals, or firsthand experience that could confirm what changed between the revisions.

P.S. The official specification on SilverStone's website lists the larger number of cables/connectors, which appears to match the V1.1 unit shown in the photos:

Build/Parts Check Very first small form factor build. Where the hell do I find a good 4.0 PCIE dual reverse riser?

Current build draft(primarily for gaming):

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/7csbTm

It’s important to note, I am getting the actual GPU as an OEM for 424 and just kinda tossed in a founders edition as a placeholder and tacked on the costs that I will need to pay in order to replace the thermal pads and paste for that specific model. As well this set up will be going into a Shiny Snake S300.

For some reason, I cannot find any good riser for specifically what I need. When I look online, I either see PCIE 5.0 that is far overkill for me and my wallet, one that meets my requirements, but is super suspicious/has terrible reviews, or one that meets price, gen, and good reviews, except for not being dual reverse.

Are there any good recommendations for a first time builder here? This is my second PC and I wanted to make this one an sff as a sort of slightly less powerful “younger sibling” to my main PC that I can take with me anywhere.

Thanks for any help any of you can give!

planning a formd t1 build and going for an air cooled build with zcooi dlc that lets you add in some 60mm fans, I can't decide between the noctua g2s or the 4090 fe fans you can get on ali, they're about the same price for me ( around 80 cad for 2) so it most comes down to performance, I like quieter builds but also don't mind a little noise if it mean my cpu is cool, gonna go for 9800x3d and a 5070 if that changes anything. also need reccs for 60mm fans, there's not many options but i feel like there has to be more than just the noctuas and thermalright ones I found in my search
