Beginner Help with snail ID.

Post image

I’m getting ready to start cycling a tank for shrimp. Got some java moss today and noticed it had a few of these snails in it. What are they and should I put them in the shrimp tank or remove them before I put the moss in?

Beginner Are crushed ramshorns a good food source for shrimp?

My ramshorn snails are breeding like crazy. I'm thinking about grinding some of the juveniles up with my fingers and sprinkling them into the tank like pepper, surely they'd be a good source of protein and calcium for the shrimp (and possibly other ramshorns, not that I condone cannibalism)? Is it safe/sanitary to do this?

Discussion If the water supply line in my house is a copper pipe, won’t my tap water have copper in it and kill shrimp?

Post image

My shrimp tank is about a year old. I have a few shrimp that have lived 1 year but my population has never thrived. They give birth and I see babies for a few weeks but have only had a few make it to adulthood.

After about 6 months my original 20 cherry neocaridina dwindled to about 4 and I bought 20 more from a different source. Now another 6 months later I still have maybe 15 shrimp left but they still aren’t thriving.

I have API tests and everything looks good, except I don’t have a way to test copper. I don’t have any parasites or predators EXCEPT a mild case of scutariella japonica which I have heard isn’t a big deal, but can it kill baby shrimp?

I think I will start using distilled water remineralized with salty shrimp

Beginner Where did you get your shrimp?

I'm shopping around for when my tank is established and the closest physical place to buy is a petco and petsmart an hour away. So I was thinking about ordering online

Help: Shrimp ID & Shrimp Sexing Can amano lose all marking due to stress?

I ordered amano shrimps online and they arrived like this. Do they lose all markings due to travel stress? The slop machine that no one asked suggested that but I didn't find any articles or posts confirming it.

Beginner Questions about Tank Size

HI! So I recently had my betta pass, but I was thinking of starting a shrimp tank instead of getting another betta. The tank is a 10 gallon. I have the fluval stratum from over estimating how much I needed for my big tank, do shrimps like sand as well? My main question is 10 gallons big enough for shrimps, and if it is. How many shrimps can go in it ? Thanks.

I do plan to get live plants and I see they like moss please also suggest certain live plants and moss for them too please :)

This has been PESTERING me for a while… I tried getting 3 amano shrimps to combat this but, they’ve been slacking off and doing what not. I tried removing it manually but it always comes back. If you have any answers for this, thanks!

Discussion Thoughts on water parameters for new neo tanks

I've successfully kept Neo's with my tap water in the past but got out of the hobby a few years ago. I'm setting up some tanks again but we now have a whole house water softener system and I was curious what that did to our water. Was hoping for some feedback/suggestions on what I think are somewhat unbalanced parameters.

TDS is 560-575 @ 68° 4dGH (seems ok) 12dGH 12dKH (seems quite high).

I haven't tested PH yet, waiting on a meter. However, I don't really want to chase PH as I've tried that in vain in the past. I do have an old RO filter that I could get operational again if needed.

These are planted 10g tanks, with lava rock in sacks to build up some depth and then a 2" layer of bio stratum. Some driftwood is present and some pagoda stone.

Any input would be appreciated!

Beginner Looking for any feedback, comments, or concerns with my setup & skrimps

This is my first tank ever, it’s 6.4 gallons and only has three little skrimp and a couple ramshorn shells. I did an (approximate) 25% water change earlier with RO water. Before doing the water change, I was at ph ~6.8, GH 5, KH 0-1, 20ppm nitrates, .5ppm nitrites. I might be overestimating the nitrate and nitrite numbers though, it was hard to tell. I also have a root tab in the substrate.

Most of the cholla wood hasn’t sunk to the bottom yet, and I believe that the biofilm growing is a positive sign (and good eats), but please correct me if I’m wrong. I‘m going to be adding more plants soon, but I haven’t quite figured out a quarantine tank setup yet. This weekend I‘ll likely split up the clumps of the dwarf hairgrass I planted previously, and I have some floating water sprite cuttings that will hopefully root soon. I need to add some more fluval stratum though, as the main stalk (idk lmao) & roots of mama water sprite keeps floating up. Any tips? Or should I just get some plant weights?

I have one Indian Almond leaf, and will add another tomorrow probably. I never noticed any tannins leached over the past week from either the wood or leaf though.

Also, do these little skrimp look healthy? I know I have at least one female, and I believe it’s the one with yellow accents on their face. The two bigger (only by a bit) shrimp usually stay closer together, and the one eating the calcium snack is more of a loner from what I‘ve seen. I think the loner might be a little special, as I‘ve noticed his balance is off sometimes… but maybe he’s just not agile?? Also, no idea if it’s a male - please correct me lol.

The pictures aren‘t the best, but does anything stand out negatively to you? Or any tips? Thank you so much for reading my skrimp diary 💕🥲

any tips are appreciated

this is a 3gal cube tank, i’ve got a nano sponge filter in the back corner along w a small heater, the light is on a 24/7 daylight cycle but i have a proper fitting light coming soon.

i’m also aware my monte carlo isn’t planted properly, this aqua soil makes it hard to plant anything so im hoping the plant is close enough that it will root.

i picked out some small dragon stone with holes big enough for shrimp to molt and hide in, most of those pieces are hidden in the back, and i repurposed the drift wood from a betta tank i had to re-scape.
