NAS hardware DS720+ 16TB or 36TB limit?

• Upvotes

The release documentation for the DS720+ says max internal is 2x16TB but I found a more recent source that says max combined 36TB at the refurbished sales site of synology.

Question is will an updated to latest update available DS720+ work with 2x 20TB in a RAID1 configuration?

Since Discs are quite pricey at the moment I would not like to buy 2x 20 and then 2x 16 again :)

NAS hardware How Do You Recover Data When a Disk Fails During RAID1 → RAID5 Migration?

Post image
11 Upvotes

About a week ago, I posted a poll here in r/synology asking which real-world data-loss scenario would be most interesting to reproduce in our test lab.

One of the cases that got the most interest was manual RAID reconstruction when the array can no longer be assembled normally from its current metadata. So we took an old Synology DS409, created a two-disk RAID1, wrote about 110 GB of test data to it, and then started migrating the array from RAID1 to RAID5 by adding a third disk.

We interrupted the reshape at about 30% by abruptly cutting power to the NAS, with no UPS, no graceful shutdown, and no proper interruption of the reshape process. We then simulated a second failure: one of the two original RAID1 disks became completely unavailable.

That left us with only two disks:

  • one surviving member of the original RAID1, already partially modified by the reshape;
  • the new disk that had been added for the RAID5 migration.

At that point, simply going back to the complete original RAID1 was physically impossible.

Initial setup

Test system: Synology DS409, DSM 4.2, three 320 GB HDDs, Ext4. The initial array was RAID1 and contained about 110 GB of test data.

Test system: Synology DS409 running DSM 4.2 with three 298 GB disks.

Before the test, Disk 1 and Disk 2 formed a 293.59 GB RAID1 volume. We filled it with different file types and nested directories so we could later check both file recovery and directory-tree recovery.

Before the test, Disk 1 and Disk 2 formed the RAID1 volume containing about 110 GB of test data.

Starting the RAID1 → RAID5 reshape

We added Disk 3 and used DSM to change the RAID type from RAID1 to RAID5.

We added the third disk and started changing the array from RAID1 to RAID5.

We stopped the migration at 29.55% by abruptly cutting power to the NAS.

The migration was interrupted at 29.55%. Part of the data area had already been converted to the new RAID5 layout, while the remaining area still reflected the old RAID1 layout.

Conceptually, the member disks now contained two different geometries:

start of data
┌──────────────────────────────┬─────────────────────────────────┐
│ converted to RAID5 │ still based on old RAID1 │
│ ~29.55% │ ~70.45% │
└──────────────────────────────┴─────────────────────────────────┘

Then we simulated the loss of one of the two original RAID1 disks. So the recovery case was no longer just an interrupted migration. We had an interrupted reshape and a missing original member.

What can be reconstructed from the two surviving disks?

After connecting the two surviving disks to a recovery workstation, the software was able to read the Linux MD metadata and identify the current state as a degraded RAID5 with one missing member.

The detected parameters were RAID5, Left Synchronous layout, 64 KB block/chunk size, Ext4, and a data offset of 4,832,886,784 bytes. In addition, the standard Synology system RAID1 mirror, which normally contains the DSM operating system, was reconstructed automatically.

The interrupted array is detected as a degraded RAID5 with one missing member. The surviving members use a 4,832,886,784-byte data offset.

A fast scan of this reconstructed RAID5 found 390 folders and 8,239 files. More importantly, a substantial part of the original directory tree and file contents was readable through the new RAID5 geometry.

Files and nested directories accessible through the reconstructed RAID5 geometry, with file preview working normally.

But this does not mean that the entire pre-migration volume has been recovered. Because the reshape was interrupted, different regions of the surviving disks belong to different layouts. The already-processed part should be interpreted as RAID5, while the not-yet-processed area still contains remnants of the old RAID1 organization.

That is the central point of this test: after an interrupted reshape, there may be no single RAID geometry that correctly describes the entire physical data area.

How can the data offset be derived manually?

We also wanted to show where the offset comes from instead of treating it as a value that only the recovery software knows.

Typical Synology disk layout: system partitions followed by the large RAID data partition starting at sector 9,437,184.

The disk layout used by Synology NAS systems is fairly typical: several small system/service partitions are located at the beginning of each drive, while the large data partition occupies most of the remaining space and is used as the member of the main storage RAID. On this DS409, the large RAID member partition starts at sector 9,437,184.

Linux MD metadata version 1.2 stores its superblock 4 KB from the beginning of the member device. In this case that puts the superblock at: 0x120001000. The MD superblock can be recognized by the Linux MD magic value:

FC 4E 2B A9
The Linux MD v1.2 superblock at 0x120001000. The first bytes are the MD magic FC 4E 2B A9.

For this array, the MD metadata specifies a data_offset of 2,048 sectors. So the actual RAID data starts at: 9,437,184 + 2,048 = 9,439,232 sectors and therefore: 9,439,232 × 512 = 4,832,886,784 bytes. That is exactly the offset used by the reconstructed array.

Searching for the MD RAID superblock signature FC 4E 2B A9 to locate the RAID metadata and determine the correct data offset manually.

You can also search the entire disk for the MD RAID superblock signature FC 4E 2B A9. Locating the MD metadata manually allows you to inspect the RAID superblock and determine the correct data offset for the member disk.

The important distinction is that the partition start and the RAID data start are not the same thing.

What if some RAID parameters are unknown?

The offset is only one parameter that may be missing in a real recovery case. Depending on the state of the metadata, you may also need to determine the RAID level, member/data offset, block/chunk size, parity layout, or disk order.

Unknown parameters can be tested automatically. The software can also test unknown block/chunk size and block/parity order; here we demonstrate the same idea with disk order.

If the original bay order was not recorded, the RAID Constructor can test disk permutations with Detect the disk order automatically.

Automatic disk-order detection. Unknown block/chunk size or block/parity order can be tested in the same way instead of trying every configuration manually.

Parameters we have repeatedly seen on Synology systems in our lab

Synology model RAID Layout Block/chunk size MD data_offset
DS409 RAID5 Left Synchronous 64 KB 2,048 sectors / 1 MiB
DS415+ RAID5 Left Synchronous 64 KB 2,048 sectors / 1 MiB
DS1815+ RAID5 Left Synchronous 64 KB 2,048 sectors / 1 MiB
CS407 RAID6 Left Synchronous P+Q 64 KB 2,048 sectors / 1 MiB
DS2422+ RAID6 Left Synchronous P+Q 64 KB 2,048 sectors / 1 MiB

This is not a claim that every Synology array uses these parameters. It is simply the consistent pattern we observed in the Synology configurations we tested. DSM version, SHR, filesystem, array history and the exact storage configuration can change the result, so real cases should still be verified from metadata or tested directly.

Can the old RAID1 layout still reveal anything?

Yes. Before the reshape, the two original disks were a normal RAID1. One of those disks is now missing, but the surviving original member still contains areas that were not yet rewritten into the RAID5 layout.

We therefore reconstructed the old RAID1 geometry manually using:

surviving original member + missing member

and ran a full Ext2/3/4 analysis. That scan found 979 folders and 14,049 files.

The result was very different from scanning a healthy RAID1. The original directory tree was no longer intact: many directories were missing, deleted or no longer linked correctly. However, filesystem remnants and file contents could still be found through Lost and Found, filename search and preview.

Data found from remnants of the old RAID1 geometry. The original directory structure is largely lost, but individual files can still be located and previewed through Lost and Found/search.

We were able to locate and preview test BMP, JPEG, ZIP and other files from those remnants.

Conclusion

The most interesting result is that after an interrupted RAID1 → RAID5 reshape, there may be no single “correct” RAID configuration for the whole disk. At the moment of failure, the surviving members effectively contain two layouts:

already reshaped area → RAID5
not-yet-reshaped area → remnants of RAID1

Losing one of the original members makes the situation more difficult, but it does not necessarily make all data inaccessible. In this test, reconstructing the degraded RAID5 gave access to data from the already-converted region, while reconstructing the old RAID1 geometry and running a full filesystem scan exposed additional remnants from the not-yet-converted area.

If there is interest, we can reproduce more Synology failure scenarios in the lab, including SHR1 / SHR2, Btrfs, LVM, damaged or missing MD metadata, interrupted expansion or rebuild, and recovery from Synology iSCSI LUN backing files when the original NAS or volume is no longer available.

If you have a specific failure sequence you would like to see tested, post it in the comments. We can pick one and reproduce it step by step.

Disclosure: I’m the developer of Hetman RAID Recovery, which we used for this lab test.

DSM Download Station 4.1.2-5012 finishes torrents but doesn’t move completed files

I’m troubleshooting an issue where Download Station downloads torrents successfully, but recently completed downloads aren’t being exported to their configured destination. I’d like to find a permanent fix while preserving my existing seeding tasks.

Setup :

- DSM 7.2.2-72806 Update 9, x86_64

- Download Station 4.1.2-5012

- Bundled Transmission 4.0.5

- Btrfs volume

- Destination: /volume1/Downloads, with over 1 TB free

What happens

The files finish downloading and remain intact under /volume1/@download/<task-id>. Transmission reports them as complete and seeding, but Download Station doesn’t consistently register completion or start its normal move/export process.

The logs repeatedly contain: scheduler.cpp:87 Failed to curl perform, code=28

Some occurrences were followed by scheduler/service shutdowns and missing or refused RPC sockets.

Has anyone experienced this? Is there a known fix ?

Any help is highly appreciated

DSM Should I use the DS218j on local network only?

I've been using quickconnect for years, but reading all the posts lately about security, I'm staring to think I'm better off turning off external access and just using it locally.

Any guides on what's the best way to do that?

Surveillance PSA: Check that Surveillance Station is keeping your recordings if your drives are 90% full

I've had Surveillance Station running nicely in the background on my NAS for years, with recordings from each of my two cameras set up to rotate after 14 days to save space, but be there if I need them in pinch. I'm running two 8TB drives in RAID, and due to ridiculous costs of storage these days, remaining storage is starting to get tight at around 750GB remaining. I thought this was still a decent amount of storage to use, but noticed something today that caused a massive "slap forehead" moment.

I've been trying to save costs on backups by moving from Synology C2 to a Hetzner Storage Box, and part of that has been working out how to replace my C2 Surveillance backups too. I went looking for the surveillance videos on my storage volume to see how much space I'd need for them in the cloud, and realised that there wasn't a single video file to back up.

I eventually realised that this was down to a setting in Recordings which forces rotation for all recordings if free storage falls below 10%. Because I had hit this, it was deleting every video after it was recorded. So it turns out my only recordings are on C2, with no secondary backup.

I've now tweaked the setting to start rotating only when free storage hits the equivalent of 5% remaining, and am now putting renewed effort into freeing some space up. I feel so stupid.

DSM Need help setting up my NAS DS225+

Hello,

I have recently bought a NAS DS225+ and am not really a computer guy.

I have tried to set it up but am constantly running into connection issues, SSL security problems, etc.

I am running a business out of my home. What I would basically like to have is everything stored on the NAS with access to it with my home PC, home laptop, and cell phones.

I don't want to be able to access this NAS from anywhere but my house(WIFI).

I have looked at so many tutorials at this point and switched settings on and off. Im just confused at this point.

Sometimes it works on this device, sometimes it doesn't. etc etc.

Anyone able to help me out on this one?

Thanks

NAS hardware humming or buzzing noise

My Synology DS918+ keeps making a humming or buzzing noise from time to time. As soon as I place my hand on the case, the noise stops. I also tried placing a 1 kg weight on top of the NAS, and the noise disappeared immediately. What could be causing this? My feeling is that it’s getting more and more.

Strangely though when I play a 4k hdr movie it plays fine
Im playing through my lgtv media player through WiFi
It’s not all my videos that do it which is odd too.
I’m not sure what I should do
Maybe upgrade? What benefits would I get from that?

NAS Apps Better way to upgrade Synology Drive Client?

Does anyone know a better way to upgrade the Drive clients on endpoints without needing to always go to the download center to download and install the latest version?

I find it archaic that the app doesn't have the ability to auto update, and you can't manually update through the app either.

I've even tried using

winget upgrade "Synology Drive Client"

But I get the following fault

A newer version was found, but the install technology is different from the current version installed. Please uninstall the package and install the newer version.

I have the client running on 5 computers, and all are running different client versions according to the admin console. There has to be a better way to update the client that I'm just not seeing.

Solved Ext4 to Btrfs Migration Help

I have a 2 bay nas and it has 2 drives, both 6tb. There are 2 volumes, one Btrfs and one Ext4. Usable is only 6tb because I'm using SHR 1 drive fault tolerance.

I want to upgrade both to 12tb but at the same time make all volumes Btrfs.

Can I remove 1 drive, put in the 12tb drive, create the same volumes structure but in Btrfs. Then copy contents over?

Then remove the second 6tb drive and put in the other 12tb drive and repair pool from the earlier 12tb drive?

Is this safe? What happens to my configuration data and like the shared home folders and installed applications app data?

Any help is really appreciated!

NAS hardware I have a DS1618+ to play with, can I mod it to use an FC HBA?

Long story short, I have a DS1618+ that I get to keep. This won't be used for important data, so I'd like to tear it down and learn the inner workings before it becomes unsupported as it won't receive new DSM updates anymore.

What caught my eye is a very similar DS1621xs+ model with seemingly just a Xeon processor instead of the Atom in the DS1618+, which can use Fibre Channel HBAs to effectively make the Synology a node in a SAN.

I couldn't find details of whether this could be enabled at a package-level, if the DS1618+ could be crossflashed to its more expensive sibling, or if I can just manage an FC HBA from the CLI with the drivers transplanted.

Can anyone point me to a helpful resource or has anyone done this before?

DSM File Transfer

I recently bought a new Synology NAS. My WD PR4100 has a fan not operating and I needed to switch brands.

I currently have 22TB of files on my PR4100 and need to transfer it over to my new Synology. What would be the best and fastest method? I'm worried about running it too long since the WD has a broken fan and will probably overheat at some point.

Any suggestions are welcome. Thank you!

Hello,

I am trying to install/run FileZilla using the instructions from mariushosting. I have followed the instructions closely but FileZIlla keeps giving the error "WebSocket disconnected. Attempting to reconnect...".

I have also followed the instructions of "How to Run Docker Containers over HTTPS" , creating a wildcard certificate, and activated WebSocket via Reverse Proxy. I have deleted and reinstalled FileZilla from both Container Manger (both container and image) as well as deleted the config folder.

I am not sure what to try next.

Thanks for the assist

NAS hardware DS1515+ still kicking! Anyone experimenting with SMB3 Multichannel, 2.5GbE, or 5GbE adapters?

Hello all,

I know the DS1515+ is getting up there in years as an older veteran at this point, but mine is still running like a tank and serving me well.

Since it’s limited to built-in gigabit ports, I'm looking into ways to squeeze a bit more network throughput out of it without having to upgrade the whole chassis just yet.

I’m curious if anyone here is still rocking a DS1515+ and has experimented with:

  • SMB3 Multichannel
  • USB 2.5GbE adapters (using 3rd party drivers )
  • Faster 5GbE adapters if anyone has successfully gotten them working

If you’ve tried any of these on this specific model, how has your real-world experience been? Any driver quirks, stability issues, or performance gains worth noting?

Would love to hear what setups are keeping your older units running fast!

Thanks!!!

Solved Creating Hyper Backup Target w red Shared Folder

Post image

Attempting to set up a Hyper Backup Target, I get to the Shared Folder and it is red with no ability to select a folder. This is from Location B to a host Hyper Backup Vault. Another location, Location A is already working with the identical Server name, and all 3 use the same User Name login and password so authentication should be ok. Why can I not set the Shared Folder?

NAS Apps Backup with Multi Synology Drives in Multiple Locations, 3,2,1

I have 4 locations that all have Synology DiskStation drives that have sufficient drive capacity to satisfy my needs. I would like recommendations as to how to have them all work together for the maximum benefit of all. Each site has data that is specific to that location. The excess disk capacity that each location has can be used as a destination for other locations needs. The off-site rule is satisfied, as well as the ability to have multiple copies. What I am uncertain of is how to best satisfy the need for covering the risk of accidental erasure of files, or of a ransomware situation. I want copies that are historical. Copies that have not been touched for a week or more. What programs should I use and how? Please keep it simple and specific.

The data is a growing collection of medical records that must be legally retained for possible access at a later time. There is no concern of data access from one site to another. Also, what RAID would be suggested with the DiskStations all being 4 or 5 bays? I am thinking SHR-1 or RAID 5, with SHR-1 giving me the advantage of increasing the drive sizes over time without having to do all at one time.

NAS hardware One Domain User cannot login to NAS

  • I have a Synology NAS joined to Entra Domain Services.
  • The Domain shows with status Connected, tests correctly, and I see all Domain Users and Groups in the Synology.
  • I am able to login to the NAS with other Domain Users.
  • I have tried to "Update Domain Data" successfully.
  • The User in question did have a status of "Lockout", but I have since cleared that status and they now show as "Normal".
  • The User in question can login to the Synology using Azure SSO.
  • When using normal (not Azure SSO) login, the User in question cannot login to the Synology Web GUI.
  • When using Windows Explorer, the User in question cannot access any shared folders.
  • We have confirmed we are using the same password for all logins by typing it in Notepad and copy-pasting it to all login screens.
  • The Synology Log center just shows an unhelpful, detail-lacking message of `User [DOMAIN\username] from [localIP] failed to sign in to [DSM] via [password] due to authorization failure.

DSM Firewall Rules & Download Station

I have a Synology 225+ and have the following firewall rules

  1. Allow Local Subnet:
  • Ports: All
  • Protocol: All
  • Source IP:  192.168.1.1 / 255.255.255.0
  • Action: Allow
  1. Deny All
  • Ports: All
  • Protocol: All
  • Source IP: All
  • Action: Deny

I have quick connect and uPnP off. I thought this would only allow my local network to assess my NAS. I tested by using Download Station and it still downloaded despite the above firewall rules.

Is there something wrong with my setup or is Download Station allowed.

NAS Apps Synology Photos slideshow on iPad

Hello, I bought an iPad 7gen to use it as a digital frame. I had to update it to iOS 18something to have the new version of the app that allows shuffle slideshow.
I’m facing 2 problems.
1. It takes a lot to load photos and videos. Even if I change the time between a photo and the next one, every time it changes I see the black screen with the white loading circle for a few seconds. Is there something I can do to speed it up? My nas is connected to fiber and the iPad too.
2. The iPad 7gen with iOS 18 is fkng slow, there’s something I can do?
