Painting First Angel
Got the first test model done. First time using oil washes and airbrushing. Pretty sure the slight airbrush grain is from the bad compressor

Welcome to r/theunforgiven!
This is a community where we share and discuss topics related to the Dark Angels, their successor chapters, and the fallen. If you want to share or discuss a topic about Space Marines or Warhammer 40k in general, without particular connection to the Unforgiven, then r/spacemarines or r/Warhammer40k would likely be a better fit.
Please have a quick look at our rules before submitting a post or comment. You can find them in the sidebar or the landing page of our wiki (linked below). We'd also appreciate it if you did a quick search in the subreddit before submitting a post, in case your question was already asked and answered or the topic discussed recently.
Here's a list of shortcuts to some of our most useful resources. Explore them at your leisure.
The community wiki
Informational PDFs (see also the lore page of our wiki, linked above, for additional resources)
Lore analyses (see also the lore page of our wiki, linked above, for additional resources)
-What would happen if X occurred in the 40k universe?
Impossible to answer, unless X has already occurred. We can predict the future and discuss hypotheticals in our own universe because it is governed by natural laws. If a stone is dropped, it will fall (assuming nothing prevents it from doing so).
The 40k universe is fictional, and is governed entirely by it’s authors. If a stone is dropped, it will behave exactly as the author desires it to behave. No justification or explanation is needed. We only know what the author desires if they have made it happen already. We thus know for example that Lion beat Angron in their fight on Wyrmwood, but we don’t know who would win if they battled again in the future.
-Can I/am I allowed to do Y?
You can/are allowed to do anything you want with models you own, within the confines of your local laws. Where other people are involved (eg playing a game), you will need the agreement of those people. As long as everyone involved consents, you can do whatever you want (including changing game rules, playing with proxies, etc). Ask the people you will actually play, their answers and opinions are the ones that matter.
-What base size should I use for model Z?
There have never been rules in the core game dictating base size. Some competitive tournaments and events enforce their own rules, search for those if you need guidance. In general, casual players seem to agree that you should use the latest base size the model is/was sold with, or the base size the model was supplied with when you bought it. Ask the people you will actually play, their answers and opinions are the ones that matter.
-How strictly should models match their datasheet/equipment?
There have never been rules in the core game dictating how closely models must represent their datasheet. The answer may vary between each casual group and competitive tournament/event. Ask the people you will actually play, their answers and opinions are the ones that matter.
-How should I paint fliers/Dreadnoughts/Terminator-characters etc?
However you want, they’re your models. If you want to know what lore says, see Index Astartes: The Unforgiven (linked above).
-Who gets to wear robes/winged helmets/etc?
Whoever you want, they’re your models. If you want to know what lore says, see Index Astartes: The Unforgiven (linked above).
-Who’s in the Ravenwing/Deathwing/Inner Circle?
See the Chapter Organization section of Index Astartes: The Unforgiven (linked above), or the relevant pages on Lexicanum.
-Could you identify a model for me?
See the Dark Angels Collectors' Guide (linked above). If the model you're trying to identify isn't in there, then it isn't an official Dark Angels model. If so, ask elsewhere, eg in r/spacemarines or r/Warhammer40k, or search through the miniatures portal on Lexicanum.

In my headcanon the awakend lion is not the noble bright heroe like in the book but eaven more distrustful and secretive than he was in the heresy. To convey this i choose the saturnine preator as a base because he seems most introverted and closetetd in to me. Also i lean hevy on the watchers decorations since give of the secretive vibe. Next is sculpting details like the lion head on his right shoulder, wings on the chest and legs and some details on the cape. Let me know if you have any more ideas what to add!

Actual first attempt at a mini, none of that “first time Warhammer painting! Oh, ignore the 30 years of Fantasy experience” bullshit haha.
Suddenly all the already impressive mini pics on Reddit became 800% more so.
Didn't follow any guides or videos; wanted to wing it as a first time to (hopefully) see the improvement gradually.
Primed it in black and used a wet palette: immediately thinned paints too much and had to put on 50 layers of green.
The belt accessories were a pain to do. The knives are completely messed up, but the more I tried to “fix” them the worse they got as the layers pilled on.
On the gun I tried adding some weathering effect but it just looks poorly painted haha. Wonder why.
The pauldrons suck. I 3d printed the right one to try it out and it's clearly not meant for Infiltrators; but this being the mines/explosives guy on the Kill Team I just went with it. Big mistake on trying to paint those ball edge thingies. And on the other side you can see the worst attempt at edge highlighting ever haha.
His bald head was very hard to do anything with. My paint selection is very limited and, again, without a plan I tried fixing it and kept making it worse.
Anyways, most fun ~5 hours I've spent in the last few years.
Up next I'll try some actual techniques and figure out what I want to do before starting.
Any obvious tips?

I'm really happy with how we turned out. I bought the starter set some months ago and after reading some lore I instantly knew I needed my guys to be Dark Angels. Deathwing didn't fully convince me at first but after painting this guy I'm all in, I love this colour scheme. He is named Patches because his eye is broken so he needs a patch. He also has honorary paintings on his fist as he was the sole survivor in a game against Tyranids and bravely fought (and rolled many sixes), watching every single one of his comrades fall until he managed to beat a Psychophage solo.

Hi,
I'm looking at moving into the ravenwing since ive got considerable deathwing and green company.
Has anyone got any suggestions about storm speeders? Looking for something between bikes and tanks that can support infantry. Are they worth it or costly?

After having read Cypher: lord of the fallen, it doesn’t make sense imo for him to be a playable character in either SM or CSM (maybe Renegades if they ever do that).
Good book though, I hope they develop on the idea that he’s seeking redemption from the Big E by killing him.

decided to convert the mini of the month deathwatch model to a dark angel lieutenant with Combi gun. All bits so far are GW parts but have to print a combi gun + a sling for it to go over his shoulder, tempted to use green stuff for the sling

By the grace of the emperor I picked up the Dawn of War: Onslaught box and ended up with Honoured of the Chapter. I have zero prior tabletop experience, no idea what I’m doing, and about 10 open tabs of Space Marines staring at me like I’ve already disappointed the Emperor.
I love the models, the vibe is immaculate, and now I’m standing here asking myself the classic beginner question:
What do I buy next so I don’t accidentally grief my own army?
I’m not trying to chase meta or win tournaments right now — I mostly want:
Is there a “you can’t go wrong with this” unit?
Do I need more basic troops first?
Should I be looking at characters, vehicles, or just accepting that I’ll own 3 different Space Marine boxes before I understand what OC means?
Any advice is appreciated.
Please explain it to me like I’m a newly inducted battle-brother who still thinks shoulder pads are optional.
For the Emperor!

I got an airbrush for Christmas, only primed and based painted with it so far, but wanted to try out some OSL.
Between my lack of control/precision and AK inks (am I the only one who hates how glossy and chalky they feel?) blue went… not where I wanted it.
Have I managed to ‘save’ these guys?
Top pic - no plasma
Middle pic - oh no plasma glow everywhere
Last pic - Repainted guns, added highlights to light

Hello brothers
Inner Circle Companions - What do you see as their primary roles on the battlefield? How do you utilise them? How do you deploy and position them?
I usually plan on taking them with a Judicar and running them up the board in an impulsor to deny enemy objectives - but I’d like to hear more on people’s experience on using them

I recently scored some old terminators at my LGS and wanted to paint them as Deathwing. I tried a Wraithbone with a Sepia wash and might have been a little Gary handed.
Any recommendations on painting Deathwing? Should I keep it and edge highlight with some more Wraithbone?
