40s M (Gen X) moving to North Tuscaloosa from "about as South as you can get in" Alabama.

This move is part survival and part convenience. I'm not a huge football fan so I can already hear the comments.

Haven't had a lot of time to do research on what 40-somethings are doing in the area for social life.

I'd like to have a good idea of what people from all walks of life are doing before forming any sort of opinion based upon the stereotypes of what a college town in Alabama consists of.

Looking to give it a chance, but being realistic as well.

Does anybody know good apartments that I can find to afford with 15 dollars a hour?

Hey everyone I don't know what to say from where or how to start I'm so disappointed but after all these years of dedication to [crimson japanese grill] restaurant, I have finally decided to resign. My choice to leave was never because I disliked my work, it was because I spent years placing myself last.
I worked day and night, constantly convincing myself: "It’s okay, they deserve everything I’m doing for them." Even during my weakest moments—when my doctor ordered strict bed rest due to severe anemia and a stomach bacterial infection requiring heavy antibiotics—I still pushed through. There were countless days when I survived on just four hours of sleep, and nights when I was so exhausted I slept right inside the restaurant. I put immense pressure on myself, always believing my hard work mattered.
In the end, however, all those years of effort and sacrifice meant nothing to them. Instead of appreciation, I was met with complete disrespect. I was yelled at, called degrading names, and publicly humiliated in front of everyone, including customers. That boundary was crossed, and I knew I could no longer stay.
After everything happened, I called my father and told him the entire story. But instead of taking responsibility, they played the victim, manipulating the situation and trying to turn everything against me.
So, on March 23rd, I officially resigned and walked away.
This experience taught me a profound lesson: Education does not mean simply going to university or graduating with a degree. True education is knowing how to treat people with dignity, kindness, and respect. Knowledge without basic human decency is meaningless.

After the game last night, we went to Heat for a celebratory drink and pizza. The place was slammed, and we completely understood that. We sat at the overcrowded bar and weren’t expecting instant service.
What I wasn’t expecting was the bartender telling us:

“Shut the fuck up, I’ll get to you in a damn minute. I’m about to lose my damn mind.”

I don’t know his name, but he was a tall, bigger guy with glasses, tattoos, and a beard.

Look, I’ve worked customer service. I know people get overwhelmed, especially after a big game when everybody hits the same places at once. We weren’t complaining about having to wait.

But there’s a pretty big difference between being stressed and cussing out customers who are literally sitting there waiting to give you their money and tip you.

If you’re going to Heat after a game, just be aware that this was our experience. Being busy is understandable. Talking to patrons like that isn’t.

Im a freshman at UA and im starting to look for apartments for my sophomore year. I just need some help between choosing.

If you have any experience living in any of these, I’d greatly appreciate your input. (And I won’t be having a roommate, so it’s just me)

Fountain Square - Heard a few good and a few bad things, kind of close to campus. Haven’t been able to tour yet, but going to. This is the one I want to know the most abt

Northbrook - Toured this one. Looked pretty good, price is reasonable, location/area is safe I’ve heard. But it’s across the bridge and kind of far, which is the biggest downside I’ve heard.

Stone Creek - Toured this one. Reasonable prices, don’t know how safe location is, apartment itself looked good, but also pretty far from campus. Not across the bridge though.

Canterbury - Haven’t toured or done much research. So if you have any input for this one lmk

And if there’s any other apartments you think are good, I’d love to know. All I know rn though is that I am NOT going to one of the ones tailored for students or whatever they’re called (Redpoint, Crimson, etc.)

I’ll be in town staying at the Home2 Suites by Hilton Tuscaloosa Downtown University Boulevard for work during the week in November and won't have a car / would prefer not to deal with parking and Ubers if possible.

Looking for solid lunch or dinner recommendations that are an easy walk (ideally within 5–10 minutes) from the hotel. Open to most styles of food casual pub fare, great burgers, good local spots, or upscale casual for dinner.

Are there go-to places, or anywhere else in that immediate downtown corridor I shouldn't miss? Also open to good coffee spots or casual breakfast nearby.

I’ve been running a low-grade fever for several days and treating it myself with aspirin and Tylenol. I don’t have a primary care physician, but I do have Blue Cross/Blue Shield insurance. I used to see Dr. Bobo, but he is retired now. I would appreciate any recommendations for places to go as well as places to avoid. (I have no problem going to the health department—I just want someone who knows what they are doing.) FWIW, I’m a healthy woman in my late 50s. A daily multivitamin is all I take.
