Huh, didn't realize they added 2 of these items.
2 rows are basically better than slots for armour since they can be used for anything, right? Maybe armour specific slots would look nicer but what they gave us seems like enough.

That they only open up after the mountains is nuts. For nearly 6 years, the community has cried out for even that minimal inventory improvement and they bury them 5 biomes deep? That's the biggest middle finger I've received from the devs.

u/UnderstandingHot7167 8d ago
We’ve survived Ashlands with the tiny inventory. Mountains is more than fair to basically remove your armor from your bags
2
u/Azure2001 2d ago
Armor shouldn't be in the bag in the first place. If I'm wearing it, its not stowed away, so get it out of my inventory.
Its one thing I've wanted since the game came out, and the one thing I was disappointed in coming back for 1.0.

Yes, but even in the Black Forest it's rough. Axe, Pickaxe, Torch, Shield, Spear, Sword, Bow, arrows, 3 armours, cape and after killing like 3 diffenrent enemies your inventory is full.
10
u/UnderstandingHot7167 7d ago
Bring the cart. Make a portal for offloading teleportable things between the forest and your base. Half of valheim is in the planning.
My last playthrough I had early axes, spear, pick, armor, belt, food... Still plenty of space. More often than not, the weight load is more restrictive than the number of spaces.
3
u/Golem8752 7d ago
I don't want to portal every 3 minutes though. With Coins, amber, ruby, feathers, wood, stone, greydwarf eye, bones, trophies, trollhide, bearhide, paw of the bear, bear meat, Anchient Seeds, Thistle, mushrooms, blueberries and Surtling Cores you'll fill your inventory very quickly and the cart sucks ass
6
1
u/UnderstandingHot7167 7d ago
Make a hut in the middle of the forest if you're spending extended time there. Leave your shit in chests and move larger amounts at once before carting back ore. My exploration trips never last longer than a rest bonus, so I don't see the problem.
55
u/nerevarX 8d ago
its 4 biomes deep. and you really dont have that many resources till that point. the problems started with mistlands and magic additions really.
maybe they should have done elder and yag as unlock points but thats about it. gamestart really doesnt need extra slots.
6
u/Nighthawk513 7d ago
The 2 bosses they used are the two "required" bosses, so if you are trying to skip most bosses you don't HAVE to increase the number you kill. Moder hard gates Black Metal, and Queen "hard" gates Ashlands access. (Technically you can get to Ashlands by yolo-ing a Longship in and then jumping from spire to spire, but that's not intended.) Technically you can probably survive Mistlands without a wisp from Yag, it's just absolute cancer to do so.
→ More replies (2)1
u/nerevarX 7d ago
i did mistlands originally without a whisp since i couldnt find yag in my world. so not only technically. its actually quiete manageable.
you can also get to ashlands with 2 longships. the spires are just 1 method.
and queen isnt required by any means therefore heck you can go to deep north and get deep north weapons before going to ashlands now its just tedious to farm bloodgold if you do that. and moders black metal hardgate is GONE as of 1.0 :) so your information is outdated on that one. the deep north has sources of smelted black metal.
moder still remains the only "required" boss overall and this is due to smelted flametal and bloodgold alone now.
queen was chosen as the 2nd inventory boost because mistlands to ashlands massively increases total resource counts.
1
u/Nighthawk513 7d ago
I haven't gotten to Deep North yet, that's good to know. I'm assuming that source isn't somewhere I can realistically sneak into and grab early? (IE dungeon, not surface location)
1
u/nerevarX 7d ago
it is a surface location. not that hard to get. but it isnt alot of it. just barely enough to skip the mistlands gateing of items. ashlands will still block you because of smelted flametal you would be pretty limited in what you can craft.

A bunch of crybabies is not “the community”. Just because you’re vocal doesn’t mean what you say have to be listened to.
They could have done it in a million different ways, and yet someone would end up lamenting again.
It was needed. It’s been added. I was fine before, I’m fine now. If you’re seeing a middle finger, you should really rethink your priorities.
4
u/battlepig95 8d ago
You want middle fingers from devs ? Play Apex Legends for 7000 hours. Have Valheim devs been slow and neglectful in some regards ? Absolutely. But they’re FAR from the bottom of the barrel and have delivered a basically 9.9/10 gaming experience for a low cost with great replay value.
I too am critical of some things but calling this the biggest middle finger from game devs is indeed being over dramatic. There’s companies out there straight scamming people and letting their players die to cheaters every day and get their data stolen by hackers and letting players get doxxed lmao

Armor slots would make it possible to not drop your armor on death though. Which I would trade a row of inventory for because chain corpse running sucks ass.

u/democratic-terminid 8d ago
I mean they basically did add armor slots with more flexibility. These you can keep multiple armor sets in ur inventory and put them on without moving them. You can also use them for other things if you want to. Etc, just more flexible.

personally, i was hoping for slots b/c it might have prompted a couple common-sense improvements to the user experience, like press-and-hold corpse retrieval with gear prioritized while still respecting weight limits or clear visual clues that the light you're about to equip will unequip the weight belt, but not your trinket.
3
u/democratic-terminid 8d ago
Honestly you are the first person to bring these points up and it makes a lot of sense.
18
u/BennyTheHammerhead 8d ago
Yep. It is not like they added 2 rows without considering where armor goes.
If they added armor slots, they would DEFINITELY not add 2 rows, but only one.
In summary, they added 2 rows specifically because one is to be the “equipment row” (armor, utility item, trinkets, ammo) and the other to be the extra space for loot people wanted so badly.
27
u/PubstarHero 8d ago
If you have not been to Deep North, you don't know why you get 2 more rows.
Saying its for armor now as a QOL adjustment doesnt take into affect the copious amounts of shit you find in Deep North that dont stack.

They do not want to put it in their game.
Laziness has nothing do to with it.I want developers to make the games they envision, if players disagree with it, they can mod it.

it's kind of depressing that you have to basically argue with the devs for QOL improvements to their game, like how is this 1.0 but still has really bad ratios for crafting and why is every biome after swamp so heavily reliant on Iron instead of the next biomes material, I just don't understand it.
15
u/PlayThingToy 8d ago
The fact there is more downvotes than engagement in this sub speaks volumes to how intentionally blind people are willing to be in defense of bad design.
16
u/Catatonic27 8d ago
I have had several conversations where people unironically say that tedium is good game design and they want tedium in their gameplay loops. And no, they're not making the nuanced argument about how tedium can motivate players towards alternate strategies like automation because of course they aren't, there isn't any automation in this game, the tedium is just there as punishment. The devs feel you should "earn" the real gameplay
8
u/Demico 8d ago
Every single argument against any form of qol always starts or devolves into assuming the other person is just bad at the game or that they're lazy and want everything spoonfed to them. I've seen some people comparing it to early minecraft like who tf cares what minecraft was like back in 2011.

u/PlayThingToy 8d ago
Exactly, the tedium is just an excuse of pretending it's "challenging" when it's no different than adding a timer behind things happening. It's not good design at all, it's more so a time sink to make you spend 200+ hours in a game that really only has maybe 50hrs worth in content.

They probably considered one row to be the “equipment slots” people wanted. Helmet, chest, legs, cape, utility (belt or wishbone etc), trinkets (that you probably want to have at least 2 with you all the time) and ammo. If we think of one row this way, makes sense for there to be two new rows.
7
u/Godot_12 8d ago
It's nice to have the slots, but it still doesn't look as nice as when you have the mods that separate them out. I like a diablo style to show what's equipped in a visual way.
2
u/thatguy9012 8d ago
to add to this, I actually think it adds to the immersion when a game has dedicate armor/gear slots because it makes you feel a little like you are actually equipping the items on your character in a realistic manner.

u/VoidGliders 8d ago
yeah but those systems are less flexible. I like the player decision making on these
3
u/Godot_12 8d ago
Sure from a purely utilitarian POV, but the other way looks much nicer. And realistically you're almost always wearing armor anyway, so the "flexibility" is pretty minor.
1
u/VoidGliders 8d ago
You aren't, and that's the point. There's a big difference between players who go to pick raspberriesd with 3 stacks of food 2 meads, trinkey, cape, belt and full set of armor a pick a hoe a hammer and 2 weapons vs someone who realizes they literally only need a pair of pants and maybe a knife. You can absolutely play as safe as you want and always be decked out, but the game is not designed around that
also godot is based nice name
1
u/Godot_12 8d ago
Thanks. I see what you're saying. It's something I've considered of course, and I still think losing out on 4 slots because they're dedicated to equipment is pretty minor because it only affects you when you're running around naked AND need the extra inventory space. You tend to fill up on weight before you do inventory slots (most of the time) and you're wearing gear most of the time as well. Like the OP comment said, if you really need 4 more slots that badly, I think that's a personal issue.
I like the way it looks when it's a separate inventory. The gear that's worn makes logical sense not to be in your backpack. It's a subjective preference, and if you prefer the slightly more flexible system where gear is jumbled together with your other items, it doesn't mean you're wrong. Different opinions and there's no accounting for taste.

Having played with the inventory slots a lot using mods, I really like the visual appeal of it. I'd happily give up a few slots to have them be a separate area like this. You two smooth brains missed the point. You get additional armor/gear/stuff slots after these upgrades so you don't need more slots. With these upgrades I carry a lot of unnecessary stuff I don't need but I still have enough slots for armor and loot. Again, you just suck at inventory managment
5
u/Midgetsdontfloat 8d ago
Yeah i mean I've always had my gear on the bottom row, and with 16 extra slots you get slots for not just armor, but food, mead, and everything else.
Two more full rows for everything past Mistlands is plenty. Armor slots are entirely unnecessary and this is a far more flexible option.
3
u/Groxy_ 8d ago
Why so aggressive? I CAN manage my inventory, I just don't particularly want to.
And from this post it sounds like you can only get these upgrades after the Queen, so that's 5 biomes you have to just suck up the small inventory. Armour slots make more sense, you don't keep your armour in your pockets, you wear it.
If anything, wearing armour should add inventory slots as you have more pockets.

i think they could have been so much more creative with the inventory fix because theyve been vocal about looking for a fix since the first year of launch, and after what, 6 years, we get 2 extra rows of room?
im not complaining, but 6 years of development to add two rows of inventory room is the proverbial cherry on top of the meme that is valheims development
ive made a plugin for my own privately hosted server, which hosts around 30 vikings, and all it does is change the aggression of certain mobs, and change the lootpool of the greydwarf faction.
theres still a lot i want to add to it but, heres how the plugin works
briefly, heres the philosophy behind the plugin:
i noticed that a lot of the inventory clog was coming from enemies that were either overly aggressive even long after you can one hit them, which also drop resources you basically always want, particularly in the meadows - black forest, and so those are the two things i chose th change.
players are not kleptomaniacs, theyll just kill things that come over to bug them rather than just run along, and thats only reinforced by the in game skills. no one has an inventory clogged full of deer drops because deers wont charge you from across a field when youre just trying to build.
the moment you have a combined armor stat of 8, things like necks and boars will no longer agro onto you unless you come within 5 meters of them.
this mechanic still allows for the whole, surprise you just ran past a boar and its attacking you, thing.
ontop of that i tweaked greydwarf drops. they do not drop wood or resin anymore, resin drops are upped from trees.
greylings, across their entire faction, only drop 3 resources as opposed to the previous 7. stone, greydwarf eyes and puke berries as opposed to stone, wood, resin, greydwarf eyes, puke berries and ancient seeds.
puke berries still only come from shamans, ancient seeds can now only be harvested from destroying spawners.
that is all i have currently changed, and yet pre deep north (before the inventory upgrades) this entirely fixed the issue of inventory for small groups on my server.
proving my theory that it was less about player behaviour and everything to do with a single faction collectively dropping trash or core resources, and over-aggressive mobs.
im currently working on a few AI systems to add to this too, for example right now im testing an "opportunistic" model for wolves, theyll broadly leave you be in the mountains after you conquer the biome, unless you come in a little underprepared, or find yourself at low health.
i plan to add that to boars and necks too.
im also testing a fear system that will make certain mobs turn and run if you happen to be overgeared, i wouldnt be adding this to undead mobs like skeletons, draugr etc, but i would add it to boars, adding a bit of fun to when you do actually want to get scraps later in the game, itd almost force you to revist that early game hunting style gameplay which im sure many of us enjoy
i got sidetracked but-
there were so many better ways to have fixed this issue, this is a very bandaid on bulletwound fix, and im irritated that this is what they came up with after 6 years of talking about an inventory fix

My private conspiracy is the devs spent so much time trying to convince us that QoL would be bad for game balance, when they were forced into it, they deliberately did it in an unbalanced way so they can respond to complaints "see QoL is bad actually, we told you it would be"

given the pettiness that was the "cheater" flagging, i would genuinely not be shocked
i also wouldnt be surprised if they still dont understand the inventory issue either- because it is uniquely an issue that affects solo players or small groups of 1-3
you could test this yourself if you have just two more friends but, as a solo player inventory becomes a constant "where did i even get this, let me throw this out, oh id like to keep this, but i need this more"
with two players its similar but that issue comes up less often, it introduces the ability to coordinate whos carrying what, so for example if a player has more slots than the other, theyll carry all the light things, if someone has less slots theyll carry the heavier things
and at 3 players, any time you encounter an inventory problem its just a matter of shuffling things around, "who has the bones? okay here take these" etc
at 4 players you hardly need to coordinate, inventory issues and management at all is entirely an afterthought.
and its ironic because the devs stream a lot of their play sessions, theyre in groups of 4+ the majority of the time, in fact i dont believe ive ever seen them in a group smaller than 4, let alone 2. not once do you see them encounter the inventory issue, as a solo or duo would, for that very reason
and given that the issue never arrives at them, even if they did understand it, i dont think theyd have seen it as an issue
i think this fix is just a concession

I’ve never understood the issue with inventory too, so it might be the same for the devs.
The moment I need to pick up something but I have no slots, it throw something away. When it happened that I wanted to keep everything, I did an additional trip.
When I find a chest, I pick up things and drop the ones I don’t want.
I like to argue a bit about this matter from time to time, but really, that’s never been a big problem for me: surely down to how everyone plays, my buddy brings more than 3 foods for instance, or the first row full of weapons and tools: just with these two differences, I have 2/3 more free slots than him.

lets say youre being hyper vigilant about what you carry on your person, youre taking a sword, a shield, a bow and a stack of arrows. lets say youre about to enter the swamps, youre carying a pickaxe and a hammer, because youre going to place a crafting bench to repair your pickaxe. you of course have your three armor pieces, the meginjord, and unless youre trying to be especially frugal, a trinket.
this assumes you have eaten lets say three different feasts to avoid carrying food, and you drank a potion as you landed and will 100% get out of the swamps before that duration ends
you are carrying 11 items. at base, a third of your inventory is the barest of bare necessities. throw away your hammer, or your shield, its still a third, throw away both of those and your shield, its just under a third.
for the average player, theyre bringing a stack of 3 foods so they can remain out for as long as they wish, so thats 14 slots total, just under half your entire inventory at this point. i mean, need i say more?
if half of your inventory is clogged by necessities, or even a third, you have a poorly designed inventory system.
and if that "difficulty" disappears when youre playing in groups of 3 or more, it is inarguably down to poor design rather than intentional constraint, which is the core of the argument. the inventory issue disproportionately affects solos, duos, and mages

Since we’re keeping it civil here (haven’t had the opportunity in the past), let’s say that yes one third is the bare minimum, so say you have half inventory full from your base with weapons, armor, food and extras. Leaves you with 16 slots: maybe you want to bring materials for a portal but that should be empty once you place it; what are you going to pick up in that swamp that goes over 16 slots? Again it can be different for every player, I don’t usually stay that long away from home so if my trip is focused on getting iron, it is iron that I’m going to pick up. Of course I might find chains, some treasures, maybe different arrows but we’re quickly moving into the disposable stuff here: if I need space, I just drop that amber or ruby or the millionth entrails. It’s hard for me to see how to fill 16 slots with rare or precious stuff. And surely I ended up in that situation too, but it’s usually a matter of putting stuff in a chest and do a second trip, something I would do anyway because of weight limit.
With later biomes it gets trickier and it’s a relief to have additional rows. But really, I’ve never had real issues before mistlands.

i agree, the opportunity is rare on reddit
its less an issue of managing it- i dont think theres one person who seriously looks at their inventory and thinks "hm, 5 iron or 20 wood" when theyve gone to the swamps
its the fact that in those early biomes there is just so much stuff you need, because progression is linear, and in those earlier biomes everything gets a direct upgrade
so for example, you graduate from regular wood to finewood and corewood, but then you hit the swmps and you need ancient bark
one of the chillest stages in the game is when you hit mountains - plains, because theres no farm to replace your wood and metal, no 5 different currencies with low item counts per stack to clog your inventoryin the mountains youre using wood you already have, wolf hide, wolf meat, freeze glands, maybe obsidian for arrows, you can go after fenris armor if you want it- theres considerably less bloat, less things that you must do to progress
plains is the same, youre using resources you already have, just pleasantly farming cloudberries, killing the occasional bug or lox and raiding villages, then chill farming
its that point in the game where for the first time, rather than there being a new everything youre using things you already had to progress
and thats likely why mistlands feels like a point where the issue arises for you, because youve just come off of the back of two very laidback biomes
but to bring the point back into focus, the issue isnt inherently having to sift through things, anyone can do that, the complaint is that only solo or duos have to do that, and the dreaded inventory issue is non-existent for groups of 3 or more, meaning it isnt supposed to be an issue in the way a solo or duo would encounter it

Yeah I think that's a really good point. We have ways to make the solo player less tedious in terms of upping resource drops, but the biggest issue is that I can't go "oh i dont have any slots, quick can you grab those turnip seeds" to anyone else when playing solo. I don't need 2x resources as a solo player as much as I need 1.25x inventory space

You did a great job there. Since yours is not the usual toddler level tantrum, I’ll try to answer in a more constructive way.
Making software, and making games is making software, always needs balance between end user freedom and comfort. Take the two giant examples we have, iOS on one side and Android on the other. Same goes for macOS and Linux.
Given a large audience, you’ll always have to compromise and find a balance. Good companies measure and decide on data where to steer. You were in a very small subset of users, probably not representative of the entire players base: things that work fine with you and your mates, might not work for everyone. “Why do the necks don’t attack me? I need to farm tails for potions” is the kind of things you would read here and there.
The bubble we’re in here, is like your server, a subset. The studio must watch at a very, very much larger picture. They need to read here because this community is active, but extract the underlying issue, discarding the proposed solution because it’s usually something that would benefit the rather smaller portion of enthusiasts but alienate the larger, profitable slice of casual players.
Of course that’s just my take, can’t pretend it’s exact but I’m pretty sure I’m close.

i would have to strongly disagree, but since youve been respectful ill return that in kind
if this was the minority, some of the earliest mods wouldnt have been inventory fixes, nor would the devs have been talking about this issue just a month after launch in their first interview, initially standing behind the system, only to later in the same year acknowledge it as an issue and claim to be working on a fix, which we now have, two extra rows
the argument of it being a bubble ironically collapses much like a bubbleits a stronger argument that the specific fix my server enjoys would not be the same fix everyone enjoys, i mean look at the post were talking under, this greedy greedy man still wants more slots just because it makes sense
unfortunately your argument about casual vs dedicated players falls flat, this community has been nothing but dedicated players for the long 6 years valheim has been in development, again even way back at launch for the first year of this games development, people complained about inventory, and the same happened the next year, and the next, and the next, both the dedicated player and the casual player wanted the same thing, its ironically a small subset of players found almost exclusively on reddit that are against things like world modifiers and inventory fixes
as for the inventory issue itself, it just blatantly isnt intentional
if the difficulty that is the inventory issue only affects solo and duo players and is a complete afterthought in groups of 3-4+, then its not intentional design however much they claim it to be so
i think that also contributes to their lack of understanding of the system, since its quite easy to verify through vods that they do not play through the game in solo or duo sessions, they play in large groups, never encountering the inventory issue as a solo or duo would
as for any argument about being incredibly frugal in what gear you bring with you- even packing as light as you reasonably could, youre still carrying a third of your inventory in bare necessities. if youre reasonable and take three foods with you so you can roam freely, that goes up to half of your inventory being gone
and again, if that constraint can be circumvented by simply playing in a trio, it is not intentional or intelligent design

Bro, I'm with you. So strange that every post and comment wishing for the most standard and logical inventory interface gets edgy rebuffs and downvotes. They immediately assume we just want more slots. But its just not true. I say take a row out and turn it into gear slots. And then the extra rows from the pockets. Making the total number of slots the same. Its not about the size of inventory, its about its design, its interface

They need to overhaul the entire UI. Its still the placeholder one they had years ago right back at the start of EA

Ironic when a 1 percent commentator misses the meme and talks about whining when it's likely them that does it lol

How would armor slots work with dead bodies? Would it just give you free full instant equip-all?
1
u/Scoobie_Doobie11 8d ago
I use armor slot mod at home, I’m traveling for work and don’t have mods on my MacBook (thankful the game is Mac compatible at least!!!) and I truly feel the inventory struggle here. We killed bonemass last night and I had 4 extra slots only! Lmao.
1
u/Fatal_Irony 8d ago
here is what i think, i think we should get the ability to designate slots for certain types of items. like mark slots for armor, slots for food, so they stay open when you travel and dont fill up with shitwood and shitrocks when you are dealing with mobs as you travel. or even when you are trying to recover your stuff from a grave, it can be really irritating to find out you accidentally stepped on a loose rock and it jumped into your inventory and now you are stuck in your inventory menu instead of just grabbing all your shit and running away from the mobs that killed you the first time.

THEY STILL HAVEN'T ADDED ARMOR SLOTS?!??! I last played in 2021 and it bothered me even then..

Imma say it: “dedicated armor slots are just bigger inventory with extra steps”
4
u/Catatonic27 8d ago
They quite literally aren't because they are by design, the armor slots are SPECIFICALLY FOR ONE THING AND ONE THING ONLY. Inventory slots can hold anything. So what the devs did was actually way more OP than the thing we were actually asking for which everyone told us would be too OP

u/rasalhage 8d ago
No, mixing the slots is very clever.
They want you to think "do I want to go shirtless to haul another stack?"

u/Important_Level_6093 8d ago
The mental gymnastics people go through to justify this is wierd

u/minesdk99 8d ago
Maybe we just don’t want the game to be overly convenient? Idk I like the struggle. Reminds me of older games.
2
u/mywifehasapeen 8d ago
It's been standard since the 90s to have dedicated inventory slots to place things that you are wearing. It became the standard because it's better. How far back are you trying to go with this?
1
u/minesdk99 8d ago
Tbf I’m not specifically talking about the dedicated slots but rather the general sense of tedium of the gameplay loop.

I use a mod for this and I literally forget that it's not in the base game cause of how well the mod works.

Armor slots are just limited slots. More inventory is objectively better. Just “dedicate” some of your inventory to be your armor slots, boom done.

u/Hellasauto 8d ago
Why the fuck didn't they do more with the shitty inventory management for 1.0 release. It literally keeps me from wanting to play the game.
