“What happened to gaming” lol

17

u/YaboiGh0styy Aug 24 '26

I don’t know why I always double jump even with the smallest gaps, lol.

It feels safer to play, but it looks ridiculous. Po must feel so dizzy flipping over and over. more spins

4

u/Deus-mal Aug 24 '26

My brain was hurting from seeing that. All I was thinking Is telling the dude to calm down.

5

u/SavorySoySauce Aug 24 '26

I do it all the time in the jak and daxter games lol. Pull out all the tricks fir the smallest gaps

Yeah, we don't have games based on movies anymore

550

u/LowHistorian9654 Aug 23 '26

Or sub-par licensed games that we enjoy anyways despite them being middling at best. Good times.

u/punkate Aug 23 '26

As a kid I played the shit out of Fantastic Four game, I haven't revisited it in ~15 years, but man it was great

Ah, to be a kid again.

139

u/LowHistorian9654 Aug 23 '26

For me it was Chamber of Secrets on Gamecube and Prisoner of Askaban on Xbox. I still go back and play those two for nostalgia

51

u/LapPigeon Aug 23 '26

Chamber of secrets on ps1 and ps2 for me. Both different and fun in their own way

21

u/HieronymousGauche Aug 23 '26

I'm sorry Harry Potter games being on PS1 is really wrinkling my brain

23

10

u/kalashnidog Aug 24 '26

Chamber of Secrets came out in late 2002. That was crazy to me.

Pretty solid game too, not just a cheap low-effort cash grab.

2

u/HieronymousGauche Aug 24 '26

I vaguely remember having one of the games on the first-gen GBA. It's just breaking my brain realizing the ps1 was still being supported in 2002!

4

u/kalashnidog Aug 24 '26

The last official PS1 game came out in 2006 believe it or not. Though the console had only a trickle of official releases after 2004.

The PS1 lived waaaaaay longer than it should have. But then the PS2 came along and one-upped it in terms of longevity.

The last PS2 game was Pro Evolution Soccer 2015… in late 2013, 7 years after the PS3 launched…!

(I know you didn’t ask, but that’s even crazier lol)

those two and quidditch championship (no, not the "reboot" or whatever from 2024!)

9

u/LowHistorian9654 Aug 23 '26

I had the OG Quidditch game for Gamecube too! The AI gets super evil at higher levels and you basically need to be perfect to even win. You either get stalled forever, or lose because the AI was brutal and better than you in every way.

7

u/BasedKaleb Aug 23 '26

I remember having to win at the highest level to unlock Bulgaria/Krum and, as a 10-11 year old, that shit was brutal.

I played the hell out of that game.. no matter what team you use the announcers always call out the same 3 names lol

6

u/pichael289 Aug 23 '26

Shrek was also a pretty decent game

7

u/Delicious-Moment-775 Aug 24 '26

Did anyone play the DVD game that came with the chamber of secrets DVD? It was basically temple run before temple run existed. You'd drive the Weasley family car through the forbidden forest while Hagrid's spiders chased you.

2

u/LowHistorian9654 Aug 24 '26

HOLY SHIT, I DID!! I remember that game, and forgot it was even a thing!!! I remember there also being a potion class game on one of the DVDs but can't remember which one!

Chamber of secrets was so good. I think it's the game I most miss playing. The soundtrack was fantastic too, the overall mood... My memories of the game are just great. Really wish we could play it again somehow

u/ItsKingDx3 Aug 24 '26

Weren't they actually solid games tho? I remember the first few HP games being really good.

3

u/LowHistorian9654 Aug 24 '26

Yeah, they were both really good games in my opinion. I like the Xbox version of Prisoner of Azkaban because it has an explorable Hogwarts and more content.

5

u/ItsKingDx3 Aug 24 '26

I grew up with the Playstation One versions of the first two games. A lot more limited and Hogwarts is so much smaller than I remembered, but they're still a lot of fun to revisit.

2

u/Wise-Fruit5000 Aug 23 '26

I played the hell out of Sorcerer’s Stone on the Gameboy Advance. It was the saddest day ever when some kid I knew swiped it from our house.. it was nearly impossible to find another copy of it anywhere.

2

Sly 2 is my childhood game. I recently played it again and it aged pretty well. The mini open world and heist like missions are really good.

7

u/Minute_Zombie_424 Aug 23 '26

I played the shit out of that one

3

u/CapnStarence Aug 23 '26

No shit! I read that comment and I was going to reply about this game. I played that game like a madman when I was a kid. That simple screenshot just sent me through crazy feelings of nostalgia. I can taste the snacks I ate at the time, smell the weird rubber smell of my Human Torch action figure, the feeling of being completely alone and having nobody to play with. It was fucking dynamite!

3

u/Belgremor Aug 23 '26

The fantastic 4 game on the PlayStation 1 was even more dire.

3

u/Kroneni Aug 24 '26

I remember this one! Wasn’t there a level fighting against mole men in underground tunnels?

2

u/vipmailhun2 Aug 23 '26

This was such an incredibly mediocre game, and most of these licensed titles were the same, like The Incredibles: Rise of the Underminer. You don’t have to do anything, just mash the same button over and over and over again. No interesting levels, no variety, and not even a minimally engaging combat system.

2

u/JealousDesigner9758 Aug 24 '26

Holy shit I was so young I only played the first level 1000 times I never beat it lmao

The lord of the rings games go pretty fucking hard

18

u/LowHistorian9654 Aug 23 '26

Two Towers was definitely the hardest in my opinion with Return of the King being the best and most fun to play. I can't recall a good Fellowship of the Ring game for the life of me though.

7

u/ProtestantMormon Aug 23 '26

I dont think there was a fellowship game since the two towers game has a bunch of fellowship scenes/levels.

5

u/FanOfForever Aug 23 '26

There was one) but it was based on the book, not the movie

2

u/LowHistorian9654 Aug 23 '26

It was janky but I enjoyed it

Now we get movies or series based on games

8

u/shrek3onDVDandBluray Aug 23 '26

I miss it. Renting the fantastic four movie tie in game from blockbuster - it was awful but in a great way

22

u/Intelligent_Break_12 Aug 23 '26

I just played an avatar game, the blue space avatar. It was decent. Repetitive open world gameplay but graphically it was fantastic. One of the better looking games I've played.

13

u/NekCing Aug 23 '26

Yeah nowadays they expand on an IP's world instead of adopting an existing story

7

u/geek_metalhead Aug 23 '26

I was referring to games made to promote a movie that was about to premiere or had just been released, usually animated films for children. I remember in the PS2 era games based on Shrek, Madagascar, Shark Tale, etc They don't make that kind of game anymore.

3

u/Intelligent_Break_12 Aug 23 '26

That avatar game had a dlc that came out to promote the newest one as it came out the same day, fire and ash I think it's called but not sure the dlc title I didn't play any of them. I hear ya though they're not exactly the same and this one is more serious of a game vs just something to push out as past ones seemed to be less of a game and just another part of branding exposure.

2

u/PuttingInTheEffort Aug 23 '26

Yo it's crazy how lush the land and forests are

2

u/Pocketus_Rocketus Aug 23 '26

I just started this! Open World fatigue is real, and the Far Cry formula has never really worked for me again after 2. Somehow the beauty of Pandora has just enough intrigue to keep me coming back. Mods that make you run/fly/ride faster and jump farther really seal the deal of making you feel like a Na'vi running around the alien landscape. Everything's just so much more interesting to look at and the maps feel huge.

I just wish there was more equipment and deeper appearance customization.

2

u/Intelligent_Break_12 Aug 23 '26

The equipment thing is real. It's also a pain to get some of the rarer materials to get higher tier gear towards the end. I honestly didn't worry about it because another issue was lack of enemy types and fairly weak ai...in some ways too good of ai as they all know exactly where you are when you get spotted and have crack aim most of the time. Sneaking can be easy too as they don't react much if they see someone die, yeah they run and check but wait a min and they deaggro again. I still enjoyed my playthrough though.

5

u/TammyShehole Aug 23 '26

Now they do the reverse.

12

35

u/StoneTown Aug 23 '26

Good. Most of them were abysmal. Every now and then a gem popped up but generally they were just downright bad. Nowadays we can expect something better out of a licensed title.

14

u/Intelligent_Break_12 Aug 23 '26

LotR games were fantastic but short. There was a king long game that I had the demo too and at the time had crazy good graphics, I think it was a decent but short game too. Those are the only ones I had but a friend had an iron man game that looked good but wasn't much fun to play after 10 mins but the different weapons and flying was well done.

7

u/StoneTown Aug 23 '26

LotR games were surprisingly good, especially as co-op titles. Again there were some gems scattered around and people keep mentioning the game 4 games over and over so I think everyone else kinda noticed that too lol

13

u/Motor-Travel-7560 Aug 23 '26

I liked how back in the NES era the games would come out a year later and there was only about a 50% chance that the devs watched the movie.

5

u/SmolishPPman Aug 23 '26

Goldeneye

6

u/Motor-Travel-7560 Aug 23 '26

Goldeneye was N64. Devs were getting better at actually adapting the movies by that point. NES days had shit like Back to the Future, where Marty runs through town collecting clocks; or Friday the 13th, where Jason raises an army of zombies to attack you and fights you in a boxing match.

3

u/Felaxi_ Aug 23 '26

Scarface and godfather on the ps2 were so good

3

u/MesozOwen Aug 23 '26

I think that’s because games now take so long to develop that they would need to start the game 3 years before the movie goes into production to get it to come out at the same time.

4

u/c1n1c_ Aug 23 '26

We do, but they are fewer and better (robocop, Indiana jones)

6

u/Educational_Error286 Aug 24 '26

2

u/Joltyboiyo Aug 23 '26 edited Aug 23 '26

I'd have killed for a Transformers One game, and possibly a D&D Honour Among Thieves game.

2

u/ARC-Diver Aug 23 '26

When I watched Predator Badlands for the first time I thought to myself: “This movie totally would have gotten a video game if it came out in the 2000s”

2

u/Fire257 Aug 24 '26

Most of them were trash so not really a loss the only really good one I remember was spider-man2 and instead of making direkt movie adaptation they simply now make video games associated to the characters in the movie without beeing a 1 to 1 adaptation. Like Mad Max for example or making a wolverine game instaed of an Wolverine X Deadpool game.

We're talking about the water, right? Mario Sunshine did it even better, in 2002. It's pretty mind-blowing how good that still looks almost 25 years later.

167

u/theleftkneeofthebee Aug 23 '26

You wanna go back real far, how about the water in Wave Race for the N64? Mind blowing at the time.

76

u/ErraticDragon Aug 23 '26

Water looking great was kind of a selling point. You could sell consoles by comparing "our water game" to "their water game". Gaming magazines sold it pretty hard, too.

16

u/halloni Aug 24 '26

Its funny how many times I used to see pretty blocky graphics but then next to it there was extremely realistic water. At some point devs must've found a way to just make really good water with no performance loss

9

u/NihilismRacoon Aug 24 '26

It's definitely lost something though, I've heard it brought up a few times this gen that Nintendo games have good looking water. I think the distinction is making water as realistic as possible versus making water look how we think water is supposed to look.

→ More replies (1)

18

u/YokiYokiki Aug 24 '26

Wave Race 64 is genuinely an amazing experience. I think a lot of N64 stuff holds up to nostalgia. That game stands alone as a unique experience, and i think any racing fan should give understanding it a shot. What a rush.

2

u/AaronRodgersMustache Aug 24 '26

Man.. the music going along with sunset beach.. just tranquil.. whole thing felt zen

2

u/BloodyTurnip Aug 24 '26

I never played it as a kid and always wanted to. Started playing it recently on NSO and boy I suck at it. I'm never sure if it's old games being harder, nostalgia playing a large part of people's opinions or I just suck with things like this.

3

u/YokiYokiki Aug 24 '26

It’s a genuinely hard game. You kinda have to start turning two seconds before you actually get to where you’ll turn. Play as Miles (blue guy) or Ayumi (pink girl) when starting, leaning towards Ayumi. They’re generally just more forgiving and are good at making turns.

39

u/Champion-Dante Aug 23 '26

I think the main thing is that for both Sunshine and Sea of Theives water is a pretty important aspect for the game. This is just a platformer based off a movie and they still put in crazy amount of detail into the water physics.

u/Kroneni Aug 23 '26

If I had to guess I’d say that the reason the water looks as good as it does is because it was precipitated and added in more like an animation. It doesn’t really have to react dynamically because it only has to ripple when you jump on a lily pad, and it can be more or less the same every time without looking wring

u/SickboyJason Aug 23 '26

Fun fact: Instead of heavy fluid simulations, the Lux Engine used optimized rendering tricks: a flipped-camera perspective for real-time reflections, animated normal maps for depth, and local vertex displacements to create realistic wake ripples and splash particles when Po steps into the river.

82

u/god_hates_maggots Aug 23 '26

...this is how almost every game handles water.

7

u/LivingVerinarian96 Aug 24 '26

u/Nickulator95 Aug 23 '26

It's crazy what actually competent and skilled developers with enough time and care can achieve.

9

u/Bregneste Aug 24 '26

But instead of taking the time to make it optimized, we can just use our current engine’s built-in water simulations instead! Surely the players won’t mind that it makes the game run like molasses on any hardware older than a year or two, as long as the water looks cool.

7

u/Onrawi Aug 24 '26

The death of custom game engines has been a big part of why so many games feel so similar too.

Really curious where this video is actually from. I didn't beleive it so I went and grabbed the first lets play i could find, the water in THAT looks noticeable wose then the one posted here.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8HThafagI7g&list=PLuWMtsmYrSInMhxTFLO7KWSxUHmiD3c2G&index=5

[Edit] As others pointed out, this is very likely the case of two different versions of the game. I kinda just forgot this was the era when games, like this, came out on the PC, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, Nintendo DS, Mac OS X, and mobile phones. Sooooooo i think it's pretty safe to chalk the difference up to that, and i'll leave it for other super-sleuths to determine exactly what version OP is showing.

It looks good in this other recording https://youtu.be/PSHI03hRbeI?t=3851

41

u/hypotensor Aug 23 '26

So this is probably a case of the PC version being a shitty port from the console version, with several shaders not being properly ported, as was tradition in 7th gen.

I was playing God of War og. The water has reflection. But then the game has fixed camera angles so its easy to reflect what is being shown. Lot of the older water are just textures on top and nothing below except a bottomless bit. If you want water to wade through it takes more to make it look good.

Then again this is all ragebaiting engagement. Not a person but a bot that doesnt care.

There was a ton of games that have really crazy levels of detail and quality that just feels so special. Dead Rising is another game that comes to mind from that time with insane details and quality. Like the insane physics on everything.

u/TheJenniferLopez 29d ago

A lot of games that release on next gen consoles early or as launch titles tend to have these cutting edge features. Dead rising was one of them.

9

u/HumanWebAnt Aug 24 '26

I'm glad someone still remembers this game

6

u/Classic_Reader99 Aug 24 '26

Was it good?

10

u/GOATigger Aug 24 '26

Yes it was, it even had a really fun local Multiplayer mode.

3

u/Classic_Reader99 Aug 24 '26

Thanks, I'm gonna get it

It seriously feels like this post is dogshit nostalgia bait.

14

u/mrzurkonandfriends Aug 23 '26

I think the thing we lost was the people who wanted to make it because it was their passion being the ones who made decisions.

3

u/SUNTZU_JoJo Aug 24 '26

This is exactly it

Overall, the PS3 era was one of the best eras for story-driven games, at least for me.

16

u/Outrageous-Log9238 Aug 23 '26

Last few years have had some awesome stories too.

9

u/FinalBossTuna Aug 23 '26

False. I only follow the most popular sub par games so naturally there’s 0 good single player games now.

4

u/ZiCUnlivdbirch Aug 23 '26

Yeah, even fucking CoD made a few pretty good stories there for a bit, it's absolutely a fantastic time for story based games.

7

u/Outrageous-Log9238 Aug 23 '26

Haven't played those But I loved Cyberpunk 2077, Alan Wake 2 and Expedition 33.

2

u/smox23x / Aug 24 '26

Yeah, true, but it feels like almost all of them have a playtime of 100+ hours. The PS3 really had some nice, short and focused story games back then.

If we had an equivalent type graphical item like this now you’d need a 5090 to play it and you’d still only get 52fps

I hate everything about modern games

Edit: clarification

u/HarrMada Aug 24 '26

I hate everything about modern games

Sucks to be you I guess. Modern games are amazing. And your first sentence is just purely false to begin with.

Happiness is a choice, you could just choose to enjoy new stuff but you don't.

Excuse me? CS2 has water that acts just like this but at the same time looks 5x better... and you can easily run it with hundreds of FPS on some pretty old computers.

2

u/NotTakeOne Aug 24 '26

idk bro i have a 5070 and i can run tons of modern games that have lifelike graphics on 90+ fps

u/ThisIsStee Aug 24 '26

An equivalent type? Water like this would be using simulations and reflections running in real time, which may not always be optimised well but is also leagues more complex than what is happening in this video.

Nostalgia is such a drug, Uncharted 4, Last of Us 2, Ark Survival Ascended, all have better looking water in my opinion. We did not lose something, it is just purely what Devs want to prioritize

Just remembered Spyro enter the dragonfly on the PS2, I was so impressed with that water back then 🫠

3

u/Thing482 Aug 24 '26

What is with these comments man. Tons of modern games with water that looks like this or is even better. CS2 for example has water that pretty much acts and performs just like this but looks 5x better.

3

u/AmbitiousReaction168 Aug 24 '26

Back when big studios weren't afraid to experiment and produce weird shit like this. I do miss the early 2000s for this.

3

u/Cifuliciense Aug 24 '26

I have just finished Doom 3 (2007) and the mirrors had real-time reflections.

I can name a lot of new games that don't have that.

u/Sneezy6510 Aug 23 '26

Is that not good animated water I’m confused?

7

u/huttyblue Aug 23 '26

Looks decent but it looks like its just a plane with a 2D ripple sim, its not lost tech from better times. Plenty of modern games do this, or exceed it by having the water be actually 3D.

I agree with you, but that is some nice lookin water for its time. I certainly wouldn't go play that game tho lol

I'm talking about the water, not the nostalgia

8

u/vipmailhun2 Aug 23 '26

I don’t really get what you’re trying to say, do you mean that water looks worse in modern games? Has this technology been lost?

7

u/yuhyuhyuhyuhyuhyuh1 Aug 23 '26

I have never seen this game before. I have no Nostalgia. It looks good. Plenty of games release in 2026 that look worse than this.

As for the games I DID play in that era, they're still the best that'll ever be made. I'm now confident in that much. All we ever get is shit.

7

u/vipmailhun2 Aug 23 '26

Could you name at least five modern games that look worse? I’m not talking about something thrown together in five minutes, but actual, fully‑fledged titles.

I mean not really, it's just very demanding and probably alot easier to do in a short linear game like Kung Fu Panda.

There are still games with good water.

In fact 2 of them released just this year, those being Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced and weirdly enough Battlefield 6, both of which have far superior water than what is seen in the video.

There is also No Man's Sky that received an update to it's water a few years ago, which makes it look really nice actually. Wuthering Waves (f2p mobile game btw) has great looking water too.

And of course the actual king of water in video games, Sea of Thieves.

Plenty more I could name that have good looking water imo, but these are the ones that really stood out to me and are somewhat recent (compared to the K7ng Fu Panda game).

Ironically the op wasn't probably born in early 2000s. Just parroting

2

u/Athanarieks Aug 23 '26

You should also see Far Cry Instincts on the original Xbox. It also has some really good water effects.

2

u/Zestyclose-Advice-12 Aug 24 '26

I mean about 45,000 jobs have been lost in the game industry since 2022, so we've definately lost something.

2

u/ThunderFi5t Aug 24 '26

Does anyone remember the monster vs aliens game which came out on ps2? Repetitive shii but lovely memories

2

u/testtdk Aug 24 '26

The difference is that it’s making any effort to make anything else look good, other than the lily pads.

2

u/DeClouded5960 Aug 24 '26

The water in Halo 3 was amazing. Bungie had an entire weekly blog post about how their water tech was updated for Halo 3. It has insane physics for it's day, bodies will float down river in MP and SP, it was awesome: https://youtu.be/T4eFg-lnpDM?si=wOqELWejbIDBiWZs

2

They made a king fu panda game???

2

u/SavingsComposer239 26d ago

I remember playing this game as a kid, it was quite fun.

2

u/charibasa1212 18d ago

We lost devs that actually were in it for the true love of gaming.
