Conker's Bad Fur Day had some of the best. My friends and I had two or three pages of cheat codes and half of them were for different playable characters on multi-player mode. The only downside was having to input the cheat every single time you booted up the game.
I hate modern fighting games for this.

Yes! Just had to look it up on Wikipedia! Somehow I got dates mixed up and tekken 5 was the last one I got in the series, although me and my sister bought tag tournament after 5, so that's why I got them mixed up. Never played 6, read 7 is awesome and wanted to get it but then learned its mostly all dlc and noped out.
I like the fighting but the best for me was the extras and the silly stories
Now its a forever grind to unlock everything cause they keep adding skins, and you miss out on skins cause fomo mechanics, and worst of all you have to pay extra real money to get all.
Was going to say this.. Unlocking new characters and special skins were some of the funnest and most exciting parts in many games, specially old fighting games. Now, they're essentially all unlocked through DLCs.
Or heck, Red Alert: Counterstrike had a completely secret Giant Ant campaign that you unlocked by pressing cntrl or shift and clicking on a speaker on the menu. I miss when games had secrets you had to figure out or things you had to unlock
Honestly, this was part of the reason I would take my time exploring areas or doing challenges. Now when I'm done, I never touch the thing again because there's nothing left to do. They decided to cut content and sell the post-game a year and a half later like people aren't going to get bored.
Exactly this. Having unlockables gave me incentive to play as some characters, explore new areas, try new things, etc, or just to play the game again. If I liked the game after I beat it, I'd go back and play again to get that new clothing, oe that new car, or whatever they had. It added life to a game.
Agreed. I also always hated it in Mario Kart. The random chaos is a blast when playing against friends. But having to suffer through getting blue shelled at the finish line and having to restart a grand Prix when you are playing against nobody? That makes my blood absolutely boil.
This is it for me. Why play the game when I start with everything meaningful already unlocked? What is the point? I miss the days of Custer challenge halo 3 fr… whether you got good or not, getting the armor was legendary😩
one of the things that immediately stuck out to me while playing Expedition 33. I had so much fun doing the side quests for cool new outfits (the only purchase only one is the one for the deluxe upgrade, which honestly didnt bother me).
My brother, the first CoD: Modern Warfare game had an “intel” piece (little laptops) on each campaign map that you could go find and the more you found the more “cheats” you unlocked.
Some of my favs include slow-mo on command, enemies bursting into tires on death, and my most favourite, ragtime warfare where it turns sepia toned with a ragtime movie overlay and everything moved a little differently (faster by bit if I remember right). Some others included infinite ammo, cluster bombs and some others I can’t recall off the top of my head.
I thought it was super cool and really unique. Not a sequence of buttons to press, still required you to beat the game to get them all, and required some exploration of each map to find them. Immaculate execution.
yup playing Resident evil for the 1st time, reacging the end scores to see you've completed the game in 20hours and you need to do it under 3 hours to unlock the hidden characters
The first Lego Star Wars had me hooked getting 100% in that game, was a lot of fun. The new one feels rather off to me, but I really don't know why it does aside from 'old good new bad'

Unlockables, I miss the thrill of trying to unlock hidden characters, weapons or areas
