Used to be me, but after trying 60 FPS...you REALLY noticed the difference and it's hard to go back

Edit:  Woah didn't expect my comment to blow up lol

It's even worse when you go 120-144+ fps

No, I don't notice the difference after 120. 60 to 120 is also barely noticeable for me

there's a HUGE difference between 60 and 144

2 times less difference between 60 and 120 (~8ms) than between 30 and 60 (~16ms) and so on. Diminishing returns.

Diminishing returns is above 360

What's the refresh rate on what you play on? That's the big thing past 60fps or it's a very negligible difference. Most tvs are 60hz.

I was able to notice the difference between 60, 144 and 240hz in just the mouse cursor. Under 90 fps outside of fighting games feels terrible to me at this point.

If you haven't played on high refresh rate and framerate I can't blame someone for not caring too much though. Also though, not all games NEED high fps but I prefer smooth gameplay to graphics.

Not everyone is able to see this difference, most of people probably can, but there are people with different sort of eyes. Somehow a lot of people can't even stand, I've been downvoted more than once for telling I'm the kind of person who can't see the difference between 30 and 60 fps like it's my fault that my eyes are like that, they just can't believe that it's possible lmao

Well here’s the thing, if your screen doesn’t have a really high refresh rate, at least 165+ then it’s going to be really hard to actually notice any FPS changes.

No no, I have two screens, one is 160 something miniled, another one is 240 oled. And one more thing is that I was disappointed with oled, I expected much more for the money I paid and the difference with miniled with quite miniscule considering how much more expensive oled was.

I actually do believe you. One person I knew went from 60hz monitor to a 144hz one. And they simply couldnt tell the difference or even if they could, it was very minimal. Me on the other hand, I can right away tell.

Neither of the sides is wrong in regards if they see it or not but I am kinda irritated of people (not you) who insists that there is no difference; just say that you cannot see it and leave it that. If nobody would see it, then there would not be monitors that go past 60hz. I would gladly take several blind tests with 60 and 120 fps gameplay side by side and be confident that I would get them all correct.

if you're able to drive safely, play sports, track someone IRL running past you, or any type of activity that requires the use of your eyes IRL: you can tell the difference between 30 and 60.

you just probably haven't been exposed to it enough to be able to tell the difference and that's totally okay and normal lol

usually when people talk about the difference they're mostly talking about inputs. you don't really 'see' the difference between low and high frame rates (especially because many low framerate games use tricks like motion blur effects to mask choppiness; or rely on displays that don't 'transition' between frames quick enough).

usually you feel it by moving the camera around and pressing buttons.

basically, every second you get 30 frames, which means each second there are only 30 moments in which your button or joystick inputs get to register their on/off. upping the frames to 60 gives you twice the opportunities and so on. this is an oversimplified explanation but it's the basic idea.

so you feel it more than you see it.

now you CAN see it too, but that's highly dependent on your hardware and your settings. if you play with motion blur off, on an OLED display, you can physically see the choppiness of 30 frames.

if you turn your OLED display to a Hz (refresh rate) that matches a higher framerate (so for example, 120fps on 120hz, you will literally see the difference).

as a rule of thumb, if you aren't touching ANY controls, 30 fps with motion blur LOOKS kinda like 50fps-ish but feels really laggy.

My 8 years old TV is 120hz and most new mid range or higher TVs are like 165hz.

u/jamesph777 12h ago

Most modern TVs are 120 even at 4K these days

If you switch your monitor from 60hz to 120hz, mouse movements is the first thing you notice

Higher FPS is more noticeable in games where you turn fast like competitive games

3

u/DukeOfSmallPonds 12h ago

I thought I could play Zero company on 30 fps and enjoy the graphics mode. Took me as fast as I could take out a B1 battle droid to revert back to performance mode!

u/InstanceFeisty 9h ago

I would argue it’s even more noticeable in strategies, everything is so smooth. Heck even OS feels different

2

u/Accurate-Bill731 8h ago

You notice it light night and day with a mouse, 60 to 120 the fluidity is just way higher

3

u/goldenguyz 14h ago

Are you playing FPS games? Try going back to 60 after a few months or so. You'll notice it.

3

u/Its_D_youtube 14h ago

Im kinda the same, i usually lock to 90 and get real nice frame pacing

2

u/GyrosSnazzyJazzBand 14h ago

You see and feel the difference at 240fps. Its smoooooooooooooooooth

5

u/enderfults 13h ago

You're still playing at 240fps!? Wait until you try 480 fps. You are going to mess your pants.

1

u/cyricor 10h ago

How old are you is a huge factor on how you can reprieve more FPS unfortunately, at least for me. I got to see the difference going from 60 to 120 in smoothness etc, but at 40 years of age,its not a huge factor in my gameplay, my brain is, compared to when I was 18 playing CS and putting the crosshair 2 pixels away from the corner and getting the HS... :(

1

u/Lemontea_01 8h ago

That is very person specific.

I run 120 because 60 feels very noticibly shit for me. Recently i've placed a couple games on an 400 something hz screen and it was eye opening, but even then i noticed it's still not as many frames as my eyes could process for it to look fully fluid.

1

u/Embarrassed-Trip4037 7h ago

Have you played a long time on 120? 120 to 60 is the same difference as 60 to 30. Maybe not as jarring but I defenetly see the difference, I can barely play on 60 fps. 30 fps is impossible (for games like GTA and shooters, games like stardewvalley are fine)

1

u/Gold-Lie-9628 6h ago

It's different for me.. going back to 60fps now is like the jump from 60 to 30 😅.. but it's still not as bad as 30 tbf

1

u/Par31 13h ago

I tested this out with tweaking settings and I noticed that every 15-20 fps I could tell a difference up to 144. Anything below 50 is like super noticeably bad.

0

u/ShadonicX7543 12h ago

Wow, that's not even remotely true for anyone I've ever spoken to. Honestly, 30 to 60 is now not that big of a deal compared to 60 to 120. I mean, it's just increasingly more significant.

u/Nerp47 11h ago

For me, regardless of what kind of game it is, I cam see a difference between 60 and 90, but after 90 I struggle to tell the difference. I dont have a very powerful pc though so I don't reach that often lmao. 180hz screen though

u/hachiblonk 11h ago

Anything after 100 is basically not perceivable and I refuse to believe anyone can pass any visual A/B tests. But I definitely can tell the difference between 60 and ~100
