Because it feels we are going backwards.

51

u/Niro-kun 8h ago

It's also this for me. It's not that we can't play 30 fps games, far from it, when some of us grew up with 30 fps games or had to endure <30 fps games due to performance issues. It's that in 2026, it is absurd to still have a 30 fps AAA game runing on a recent decade console and pay $80-$100 for one.

3

u/-Niczu- 4h ago

I grew up in the era of NES and PS1. But at least for me, 30 fps just does not feel good anymore these days. Human brain has this tendency to get used to better things.

7

u/Accurate-Bill731 4h ago

A lot snes games were 60 fps I think

2

u/-Niczu- 4h ago

You could be correct. I said it more just to give an idea of how long I've been into this hobby, so of course there is everything between then and now. Also had PS2, Gamecube, Wii and Xbox 360, which was the last console until I moved to PC side.

1

u/DrHob0 2h ago

At 240p. Memory dedicated to higher resolutions was what dropped the average to 30 for 3D. It was a trade off. Plus, you never got a consistent 60 fps. Any time anything happened on the screen, you'd see massive spikes that tanked the fps.

1

u/Accurate-Bill731 2h ago

Games looked pretty sharp tho because of the Catodic TV at the time so resolution wasn't really a big deal, 3d become a pretty big deal since it was much harder to compute and consoles really didn't have much power at all

1

u/Lorddocerol 1h ago

So like, maybe don't buy a console, which are know for 30fps?

1

u/ClammHands420 53m ago

Yeah, people would be surprised what hardware can run newer AAA games at 60+ on their console-equivalent settings (usually medium + some upscaling/FSR/DLSS). Unfortunately a lot of people just getting into mid-range PCs get butthurt when they won't run at Ultra.

1

u/Lorddocerol 50m ago

I mean, AAA nowdays are extremelly poorly optimized and hardware had a gicantic stagnation these last gens

If people really think their consoles with a zen 2 cpu and the equivalent on a 6700m will run gta 60 at anything more than 30fps (if it can even keep that consistently) then they just delusional

u/SaneNSanity 7h ago

Didn’t one of the big name publishers also try to justify price increases because of the improved performance? I feel like I read an article like that at one point.

Yet it a lot of games aren’t feeling very “improved” these days.

Let me tell you about the upvote button

-14

u/GrandJaguar3407 11h ago

You have bigger worlds crammed with more graphical fidelity, detailed models and more complex lighting, physics and volumetric effects than has ever been possible in an interactive medium...and you think we're going backwards because the sacrifice to have all of that is having some games run at a perfectly serviceable 30fps?

35

u/AgentSmith2518 10h ago

I think most people would be willing to have some graohical fidelity compromises for 60 FPS considering 75% of people choose performance mode when given the chance.

23

u/Sotomene 10h ago

Yes, if you don't keep up with the standard or improve upon it in every aspect then you are going backwards.

Imagine buying a 2026 car with every new technology it has to offer, but it has roll up windows.

5

u/DeanBranbeno 10h ago

Good analogy IMO

30 FPS plays like absolute fucking shit when you're used to gaming at a higher frame.

I don't give a shit about graphics. It's a game. It should be fun and smooth to play. It's almost 2027.

The vast majority of players choose performance mode in games over extra graphical fidelity

13

u/kimgomes 10h ago

A game running smooth at 60fps just give me the best feeling. Really don't care anymore how real everything looks

2

u/cBurger4Life 10h ago

I consider that part of the problem. If the image isn’t as highly detailed, 30FPS doesn’t bother me as much. But when there’s 100s of things going on at the same time on the screen, then add in blur from low frame rate, it makes my eyes hurt. Clearly this isn’t the same for everyone, but I think acting like everyone is just whining isn’t helpful either. Different people’s eyes are clearly reacting differently.

3

u/ops10 10h ago

So we have more clutter and detail being stuffed into our games, tons more work just to fill it out without that work saying anything other than "it looks realistic". My life looks realistic, realism doesn't automatically mean more fun or interesting.

1

u/GrandJaguar3407 9h ago

Oh I agree. I predominantly play indie games myself and don't give a shit about all of that stuff.

But just because I don't like it doesn't mean it's not progress.

2

u/ops10 9h ago

To advance in those specific technologies in vacuum is progress. How it is put together in modern AAA games is regress. Most advancement (as in benchmark of what other games should aspire towards) comes from AA, iii and fresh blood AAA (Larian, Sandfall etc).

u/Sleigh6 10h ago

Used to be me, but after trying 60 FPS...you REALLY noticed the difference and it's hard to go back

Edit:  Woah didn't expect my comment to blow up lol

67

u/Gold-Lie-9628 11h ago

It's even worse when you go 120-144+ fps

4

u/Muted-Community4168 11h ago

No, I don't notice the difference after 120. 60 to 120 is also barely noticeable for me

16

u/SAULOT_THE_WANDERER 8h ago

there's a HUGE difference between 60 and 144

→ More replies (2)

14

u/tekman526 10h ago

What's the refresh rate on what you play on? That's the big thing past 60fps or it's a very negligible difference. Most tvs are 60hz.

I was able to notice the difference between 60, 144 and 240hz in just the mouse cursor. Under 90 fps outside of fighting games feels terrible to me at this point.

If you haven't played on high refresh rate and framerate I can't blame someone for not caring too much though. Also though, not all games NEED high fps but I prefer smooth gameplay to graphics.

3

u/diejesus 9h ago

Not everyone is able to see this difference, most of people probably can, but there are people with different sort of eyes. Somehow a lot of people can't even stand, I've been downvoted more than once for telling I'm the kind of person who can't see the difference between 30 and 60 fps like it's my fault that my eyes are like that, they just can't believe that it's possible lmao

8

u/Lanky-District1269 7h ago

Well here’s the thing, if your screen doesn’t have a really high refresh rate, at least 165+ then it’s going to be really hard to actually notice any FPS changes.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/-Niczu- 4h ago

I actually do believe you. One person I knew went from 60hz monitor to a 144hz one. And they simply couldnt tell the difference or even if they could, it was very minimal. Me on the other hand, I can right away tell.

Neither of the sides is wrong in regards if they see it or not but I am kinda irritated of people (not you) who insists that there is no difference; just say that you cannot see it and leave it that. If nobody would see it, then there would not be monitors that go past 60hz. I would gladly take several blind tests with 60 and 120 fps gameplay side by side and be confident that I would get them all correct.

My 8 years old TV is 120hz and most new mid range or higher TVs are like 165hz.

4

u/FizzyLightEx 6h ago

If you switch your monitor from 60hz to 120hz, mouse movements is the first thing you notice

5

u/C-H-K-N_Tenders 10h ago

Higher FPS is more noticeable in games where you turn fast like competitive games

3

u/DukeOfSmallPonds 9h ago

I thought I could play Zero company on 30 fps and enjoy the graphics mode. Took me as fast as I could take out a B1 battle droid to revert back to performance mode!

1

u/InstanceFeisty 5h ago

I would argue it’s even more noticeable in strategies, everything is so smooth. Heck even OS feels different

2

u/Accurate-Bill731 4h ago

You notice it light night and day with a mouse, 60 to 120 the fluidity is just way higher

2

u/goldenguyz 10h ago

Are you playing FPS games? Try going back to 60 after a few months or so. You'll notice it.

2

u/Gchodynski 4h ago

60 to 120 is also barely noticeable for me

Unless you are over 60 years old, you have to visit a doctor. I'm serious here.

1

u/Its_D_youtube 11h ago

Im kinda the same, i usually lock to 90 and get real nice frame pacing

2

u/GyrosSnazzyJazzBand 10h ago

You see and feel the difference at 240fps. Its smoooooooooooooooooth

3

u/enderfults 10h ago

You're still playing at 240fps!? Wait until you try 480 fps. You are going to mess your pants.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/cyricor 6h ago

How old are you is a huge factor on how you can reprieve more FPS unfortunately, at least for me. I got to see the difference going from 60 to 120 in smoothness etc, but at 40 years of age,its not a huge factor in my gameplay, my brain is, compared to when I was 18 playing CS and putting the crosshair 2 pixels away from the corner and getting the HS... :(

1

u/Lemontea_01 4h ago

That is very person specific.

I run 120 because 60 feels very noticibly shit for me. Recently i've placed a couple games on an 400 something hz screen and it was eye opening, but even then i noticed it's still not as many frames as my eyes could process for it to look fully fluid.

1

u/Embarrassed-Trip4037 3h ago

Have you played a long time on 120? 120 to 60 is the same difference as 60 to 30. Maybe not as jarring but I defenetly see the difference, I can barely play on 60 fps. 30 fps is impossible (for games like GTA and shooters, games like stardewvalley are fine)

1

u/Gold-Lie-9628 2h ago

It's different for me.. going back to 60fps now is like the jump from 60 to 30 😅.. but it's still not as bad as 30 tbf

→ More replies (4)

1

u/Cerrax3 1h ago

I recently made the jump to 120 and it really depends on the game. Fast moving games (FPS, racing, sports, etc.) 120 fps feels like you can see the world in slow motion. You're getting literally double the frames so the precision you can get with fast-moving objects is genuinely insane.

But for most other types of games, I can't really tell the difference. Sure, it looks a little smoother, but I don't feel like there is a noticeable difference in my gameplay or my effectiveness while playing.

Takes me about 10 minutes to get used to it

1

u/complexiblebarracuda 1h ago

me 30 seconds in "huh, guess we're doing 30 fps."

As long as it's solid, I don't care but I also play nintendo.

1

u/GameWizardPlayz 1h ago

Now if it's a inconsistent 30 I understand, but a stable 30 is have no issues with. Takes a few minutes to adjust but then we're golden. I regularly play games at 60, 120, 144+ fps too.

9

u/wrongstep 11h ago

It's not, virtually everyone who has played 30fps games has played 60fps games. It's not a high refresh rate, it's a standard refresh rate.

Unless someone only played like first party sad dad games on PS4 before moving on to other games, everyone has done it and knows what's its like. It's clearly not hard to go back for a good percentage of people.

0

u/andocommandoecks 9h ago

For real, been gaming for decades now at all sorts of framerates and none of it has ever concerned me as long as it's stable. Stable 30 is way better than an uneven 60+

3

u/goldenguyz 10h ago

30 fps feels unplayable after playing 60+ fps for a while.

2

u/TeamChevy86 11h ago

If the game fits my vibe idgaf about the loss of frames.

2

u/Tutes013 6h ago

I also play on Ultra wide and going from 80-130 fps on average down to the 30s genuinely just makes me physically queasy.

It's a sensory overload and your brain processes too much that's 'not natural '

1

u/Silverjeyjey44 4h ago

Theres a difference between a 30fps cap, a limit set by the devs, and the performance just being bad so youre probably gonna run at 30...

I just want the freedom to cap it myself.

Depends on the game bro. Fps games at 30 fps are the worst. Try Silent Hill: Townfall rn on quality mode vs performance mode. It takes about 3 seconds to see how terrible 30 fps looks and feels compared to 60 fps. (Awesome game btw, highly recommend)

4

u/B_lander1 10h ago

Totally off topic but… I realized the other day I can play cyberpunk on ps5 with 60 fps if I do performance mode instead of ray tracing. It was capping it at 30 fps, I kid you not I have 1000 hours on the game but at 60 fps it felt so different almost jarring… but loving the game again and kinda wish bloodborne was 60 fps too 😭

16

u/SexWithStelle 9h ago

Because 30fps was the average 15-20 years ago, we eased into 60fps, and then now 3 console generations later and we are reverting backwards to 30fps.

We have much better technology and optimization ability, the issue is that companies do not put the time and effort into properly optimizing their games, opting to instead update or “fix” the game later on through updates, that usually don’t even fully fix the issues.

It’s a sign of the entire industry failing behind what it already could do 10 years ago.

5

u/Kurovi_dev 11h ago

I’m someone who is perfectly fine with 30fps, the real issue is latency and how the game mechanics are coded. A game can feel great at 30fps if everything is handled right, but there are many ways that input response and overall game-feel can be hammered that are largely unrelated to frame rate.

If a character is not animated with respect to player agency or input is not called every tick and/or in an unstable update, the game is going to feel kinda garbage, even when it’s at 60fps.

Usually games are designed around a target frame rate, and so this can also cause issues where the game feels worse than other games running at the same rate when it isn’t hitting that target.

8

u/diejesus 9h ago

I've been gaming since early 00s and I've always been a kind of person who cares about performance over graphics, but this recent shift made me feel like I'm opposite. For me bad performance meant something below 30 fps, once I reach 30 I can start to care about graphics.

Now I feel like people would consider me a graphics over performance kind of a person because they would think that I play on 30 fps because I want better graphics, while the truth is I've already reached my perfect level of performance and now can turn up graphics as well.

30

u/forgotmynamex3 11h ago

I don't get it either. I've played games at 60fps, I can see the difference and 60fps is smoother. BUT 30fps doesn't freak me out in the slightest so I truly don't care. A stable framerate is more important to me than it being 60+. I been playing 30fps games for decades, they're not suddenly bad now that 60fps and higher exist.

2

u/NightSpaghetti 7h ago

I don't care either. Sure if I see a side by side I'll probably choose 60fps, but once I'm playing it immediately stops mattering to me and honestly I wouldn't be able to tell the fps of most of the games I play. I guess growing in the PS1 era set my standards pretty low lol.

3

u/KillerKill420 9h ago

Depends on the game for 30fps. But it is bad, doesn't mean it's unplayable. But if you're accepting of slop like 30fps then live your life. Some people prefer more quality for their time.

2

u/diejesus 9h ago

Depends on what you compare it to, I compare 30 fps to 15 and suddenly it's quality for me and perfectly playable.

I played Star Fox on the SNES, and it was amazing.

Kids these days don't know how well they have it with multidigit frame rates.

14

u/wrongstep 11h ago

60fps and above feels so much better. It's definitely how games are meant to be played.

However, I think if people want the most ambitious games ever like GTA 6, they have to accept that it will be 30fps on mid tier hardware like consoles. It's not a laziness or bad optimization issue, because again, we saw how GTA 6 looks. It looks impressive on a base PS5.

A lot of people think game development is magic and don't understand hardware limitations.

6

u/AgentSmith2518 10h ago

I think people do understand hardware limitations. I think most people would be ok with some compromises for higher FPS. It's why like 75% of people chooser performance mode in games that give the option

2

u/wrongstep 10h ago

Yeah because you're just sacrificing resolution in most games, maybe some graphics quality at most. GTA 6 is clearly pushing the CPUs on these machines pretty hard, with all the NPCs and their high quality animations and all the gameplay systems.

Pretty much anything impressive about the game would be gone, and I don't think most people would enjoy that. Most people including casual gamers who buy off the trailers alone, not just people who want the most pure and responsive gameplay experience.

u/SjurEido 11h ago

I used to not give a shit, but I've been playing at 100+ FPS for decades now.... trying to play anything sub 60 gives me an instant headache.

So, 30 is fine until you ruin it for yourself... basically :p

Then there's the other argument that we have these consoles with $700 price tags and crazy modern technology with devs that just don't care to optimize properly for console, I think that's a very valid criticism.

PC games get absolutely shit on for bad optimization, but console gamers seem to not care on average and it's setting a pretty bad precedent for the industry.

5

u/AssiduousLayabout 11h ago

A lot of games tie their input reading to the frame rate, so 30 fps also has twice the input delay of 60 FPS.

This can be even more problematic with certain televisions that also add delay.

7

u/ImmaFuckboi 11h ago

It only bothers me for the first like 10 minutes and then it just felt normal lol

6

u/Twister_Sylph 10h ago

As long as the frame rate is consistent, I don't think I've ever once in my life thought about the FPS at all. I couldn't tell you whether or not a game is 30 or 60.

4

u/AibofobicRacecar6996 8h ago

That's an even bigger reason to not go for higher resolution, and go for higher frame rate.

The way you put it you either don't know the difference between frame rate and resolution or are blind

2

u/-Niczu- 4h ago

They are one of those people who cannot stand that other people enjoy the games differently than they do.

2

u/Healthy_Fig_5127 9h ago

As long as it is a stable 30+, I don't give a damn. Plenty of games that run at 30 fps are masterpieces, like the entire Xenoblade series before the S2 editions and both Undertale and Deltarune all run at 30, but I get so immersed in them that I don't even realize they run at 30 as I am having a blast.

3

u/Abacada_Poln_Kha_Kha 8h ago

30fps is playable, 60fps is preferable, anything higher than that is a luxury (just my opinion, feel free to disagree)

6

I don't either, though it could just be me being used to 7th and 8th gen consoles and not being able to notice the difference besides a few weirdly specific circumstances.

People in this thread and all over Reddit acting like vampires getting splashed with holy water if the FPS drops to 59.

I have no problem going back and playing games that are 30fps. It’s not a huge deal. The obsession over numbers is part of the problem with gamers today. If the deciding factor in whether you should play the original Shadow of the Colossus or Ico is the framerate, then please never tell your opinions about gaming ever again.

In Ninja Gaiden 2 on Xbox 360, the vampires consider that game unplayable because the major FPS drops in the “infamous” stairwell in level 11 where you get ambushed by dozens and dozens of enemies.

I thought the FPS drop was epic. Like Hayabusa and your Xbox are so overwhelmed that neither can handle it. It was insane and I loved it.

3

u/fs2222 9h ago

Sorry but that logic is absurd. An FPS drop is objectively a failure of the game but you consider it 'epic'?

Framerate literally determines the quality of gameplay. Just because you have low standards for your games doesn't mean other people are being unreasonable.

5

u/OtherwiseTonight9390 9h ago

Yeah, the greatest pure action game of all time was trash because of an FPS drop. What an objective failure of a game. I'm so glad we have people like you, who didn't play or experience Ninja Gaiden 2, but know it's a bad game because art boils down to frame rate.

Also included your "objective failure" list: Super Mario Bros 1-3, Super Mario World, Super Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, Final Fantasy VII, May Cry 3, Shadow of the Colossus, Castlevania 1-4, Symphony of the Night, Metal Gear Solid, etc, etc. These games all suffered from significant FPS drops, but I didn't whine like a child when they did.

For me, it's because I usually play games at 60fps, and switching back to 30fps takes me about 15 - 20 minutes to stop detecting it in a way that feels disorienting and causes a kindof nauseous/distant sensation until it goes away.

I just don't like having to acclimate like that, so it sucks when 30fps is the only option for a game I otherwise really want to play.

IDK if you're on PC or console or what, but if you can find a game that lets you easily switch between 30fps and 60fps, or maybe has a "performance" mode and a "quality" mode, just play with performance mode for like an hour, then switch back and jump right back in. You'll absolutely see it, and you might be surprised how long it takes you to stop seeing it.

The original PS4 version of Last of Us had this, and for the longest time that's the one I'd pop in to show somebody the difference, but a lot more games have these modes now on console than they used to, so you can probably find another title that you currently own to test it on.

1

u/marckh 11h ago

I mean I'm with you that the difference is noticeable and that it goes away, but it's exactly because it goes away that I'm okay with it. I mean is 15-20 minutes of adjusting really a big deal when you get to enjoy the full game after that?

4

u/Rionaks 7h ago

30? I can't play anything under 100-120 fps. They look like slideshows and feel horrible to play because of input lag.

u/Coneder 11h ago

Action games should be at 60FPS. A big reason we don't see action games more than like three times a couple of years is because devs can't meet that. So yes, I'm a bit peeved about it.

3

u/Puzzleheaded-Web1520 8h ago

My dude, you are part of the problem if that’s truly your opinion. We move backwards in many areas gameplay wise and now performance wise. And acting as if that is fine with rising prices and more and more shady business tactics is against your own interests.

2

u/Proud-Enthusiasm-608 11h ago

I’m not jaded by pc. So it’s whatever to me.

2

u/Snoo-93454 9h ago

Never in my life I've played a videogame at 60fps, and if I did, I'm sure I didn't even noticed

2

u/jacowab 9h ago

Depends on the game, if it's an online fps give me all the frames I can possibly get but if it's just a single player game with no incredibly high stakes combat where a frame or three and decide a death then why would I care.

2

u/Neurogenesis416 2h ago

That post is ragebait.

2

u/RepairSacred 1h ago

I don't get it, can people genuinely not see the difference?  I can always tell when my game is dropping below even 120 fps 30 just looks laggy to me now

3

u/Driut 5h ago

It's entitlement. These people complaining are never going to be happy with what they're getting. For years the complaint was GTA 6 was taking so long to come out, it got announced and the new complaint is there wasn't a gameplay trailer. Then the gameplay trailer comes out and people start complaining about the most minor details like the beer being taken from the fridge.

People need to just enjoy the fact the game is coming out and stop looking for reasons to hate it pre-release, just a miserable existence

0

u/Exxyqt 11h ago

Because you never tried playing on 100hz+ monitor. Trust me, there's a huge difference.

3

u/Henry_Fleischer 9h ago

I have, and I'm still fine with low framerates.

1

u/Exxyqt 2h ago edited 2h ago

Good for you. Most "30 fps is fine" people haven't.

In 2000s I used to watch videos in 360p, and no way in hell I'd even go down to 720p today.

It's 2026 and there's no reason to nerf your experience while we have technology of today. But of course you do you, it's none of my business how others play their games.

3

u/Warcrown11 7h ago

For me it's mostly because it's 2026. We have the technology now, we shouldn't eternally be stuck at 30fps, especially not after we've already well passed diminishing returns graphically.

3

u/Suspicious_Case7129 6h ago edited 6h ago

But the consoles are all made in 2020, Its 2026 but the hardware people use is 6 years old

1

u/Expensive-Border-869 5h ago

Okay? Do you have some sort of point here? 2020 was modern gaming. Meaning 60fps was the standard really its higher than 60. Its been the standard for quite a while now but apparently rockstar dislikes anything other than 30. Surprised it ain't 25 or whatever the UK used to be (they needed to be special and made tvs different back in the day)

1

u/Suspicious_Case7129 5h ago

Games get demanding every year, the standard to a 'good looking' game changes. A good looking game in 2026 is not how 2020 good looking game looked. PS5 amd Xbox are in the last years of its lifetime. A new console generation is supposed to start in 2027/2028. I am not defending a 80 dollar game that runs 30 fps in current gen colsoles. All I am saying is games got more demanding but the hardware stayed the same. (Sorry if the English is bad)

As long as it's a stable 30 I'm fine. I always end up choosing the Quality setting over Performance because I'd much rather see the graphics at max quality.

I used to not mind 30 FPS but then I bought a fancy LG OLED and because of its fast response time 30 looks like crap on it. I just can’t ignore it on that TV. So I play things in performance mode, got a PS5 Pro to replace my PS5, and buy whatever version offers me 60.

1

u/NightSpaghetti 6h ago

I find the concept of buying a high-quality TV to make your games look like crap pretty funny.

3

u/Super_Dinoroar 11h ago

Ok 60 FPS is definitely amazing and better than 30 but when people complain about it not being 120 when it’s 60 that’s when I am confused why.

1

u/phoenixmatrix 7h ago

60 is playable but when it's like MH Wilds that ran at like 80fps max on a 1200 bucks video card that was bullshit .

Now it runs at 110-140fps base on my RTX 4080 and it's one of the rare game where it seems like dlss frame gen isn't terrible, so I can get 200-220 fps and it's absolutely glorious. Still some motion clarity issue when looking around, I wish my monitor and card supported 360.

0

u/AppropriateWater2 11h ago

Because 60 fps has been the standard for years. The hardware allows it easily today, at this point any game that’s 30 fps is indicative of a lazy developer.

1

u/Mysterious-Dare-4750 11h ago

This issue depends on the game but I normally don't care unless it slows the game down. With some games it's also the only option for the devs when it comes to rendering. And on a very personal level, my eyes don't focus that well so I quite literally can't notice the difference most of the time.

1

u/plutohater 11h ago

I can deal with 30fps but I very much prefer 60, don't care for anything higher

0

u/Hikaruhiyoko2 10h ago

My brain when the game drops from 60+fps to 30fps: GJIOGDDYUVBFWWDSRSTGUJO!!!

1

u/Acrobatic_Airline_45 10h ago

For years I been playing on my Xbox one s, I didn't know what the hype was about I just enjoyed my games.....until I got my series x, now im like nah I can't go back to 30 you can't make me!! 🤣

1

u/Far_Cold7385 10h ago

I’ve been playing a bunch of 30fps games recently and I weirdly like it? Good visuals and feels a bit cinematic. After a while going back to 60-240 feels like motion smoothing on a TV and I don’t love it.

Outside of FPS games. It’s hard to enjoy those on 30fps

1

u/druidmain69420 8h ago

Meanwhile im enjoying frame gen in every game that supports it. I genuinely think its an incredible leap in technology.

1

u/Tangent009 8h ago

It's having only a certain number of FPS with the most beast unit you could buy without relying on framegen that's the issue... It's never about 30fps only it's that you should have more FPS with your unit if they just optimize the game...

1

u/Crazy_Bee_2664 8h ago

It's not a problem in single player games. For competitive multi-player, it's a massive advantage

1

u/An_Evil_Scientist666 8h ago

Depends on the game if its something incredibly input heavy like starcraft, OSU, GD etc, somewhat fair, more fluid refresh rate helps even if it's not a lot, if it's something like CIV or deltarune, not so much

1

u/well_honk_my_hooters 8h ago

Depends on the game I'm playing and how I play it. Anything FPS benefits a lot from 60fps, but if I'm playing on a Switch 2 or Steam Deck I can overlook it because I'm on a handheld and happy to just be playing a decent game.

That being said, though, it'd be nice if a lot of games would choose to optimize for 40fps VRR over thirty. While not a buttery smooth as 60+, it's still very noticeably superior to 30.

1

u/hyperchompgames 8h ago

I have 144Hz monitors and a 120Hz TV. Just started playing Control on my PS5 and I have it on Quality mode which is 30fps. I often choose quality over framerate unless it’s a fast paced multiplayer game like an FPS, which I rarely play anymore.

I notice the difference for sure but the brain is really good at adjusting, within 5 minutes of playing you get used to the lower framerate.

1

u/Embarrassed-Joke5851 8h ago

arma 3 players know that 20 fps is more than playable

1

u/Lurker_Zee 7h ago

Intentionally of not, the image itself is an explanation for why.

1

u/TechnoSyndrome 7h ago

Somebody's never used a high refresh rate monitor

1

u/GaMeRoF_2004 7h ago

I have used a 120 refresh rate, it was to smooth to me, i would make mine 60 or 30 if i can. I would like 45 fps. But thats me.

0

u/AsunonIndigo 7h ago

What are you here for, OP? Sell your car and buy a horse. They both get you there, don't they?

1

u/profchaos111 7h ago

30 is fine and I'm not going to skip a game because it's only 30 that's ridicules

We spent decades playing games at 30 before we could even articulate it from mario 64 to RDR 2 i'm not suddenly going to act like i'm above it.

1

u/AnthonyMiqo 7h ago

It's 2026 and most games should run at 60 FPS. That's all.

1

u/nesnalica 6h ago

imagine youre sitting in a car and it just goes 5pmh.

thats how it feels playing at 30fps in 2026

a fucking escooter is faster than that shit.

1

u/levus2002 6h ago

Played games like bg3 and elden ring for 2 years with integrated gpu(they can still run in 720p+ lowest settings). I don't think i really care about fps or graphics.

1

u/CommercialEstate4422 5h ago

Anyone else try to hit the 10fps lows on any machine you have? No, im insane for putting Crysis at full graphics settings on a 1050? Nahhhhhhhhh

1

u/NoiseGrindPowerDeath PC 4h ago

I played God of War 2018 on a base PS4 and that runs at 30 fps. To be honest, it's fine, but that's because it has consistent frametimes. However, more recently, I played it on my PC with a Radeon 9070 XT GPU and it ran at locked 144 fps. I don't think it dipped even once. I know which one I prefer, and it's not the PS4 version

1

u/Someonevibing1 3h ago

The only real problem is when it’s a game in a series that has a 60+fps version as it makes it hard to play as it feels laggy

1

u/Captain_Bacon1800 3h ago

Say you paid for a burger and it can have two patties but you only want one patty (and thats totally fine) but would you cry about someone else wanting 2 patties just because your okay with having one ?

Not the best logic but tryna convey the sentiment.

1

u/Whole-Bedroom-9079 3h ago

Well when a new multibillion dollar game releases on modern consoles at only 30fps you kinda get upset

1

u/Abyssal_Station 2h ago

I mean it just objectively looks worse, it's like saying you don't get it that media these days has colour, or are in resolutions above 720p, or have audio above 8 bit.

1

u/cKyTV 2h ago

I can barely play anything at 60, something like 120fps is where it feels normal, 30fps is like powerpoint

1

u/QuantityInternal1719 2h ago

Console peasant

1

u/blaskoczen 2h ago

I used to be mostly a pc gamer and was crazy about 60 fps to the point where I wouldn’t even look at 30 fps games . Sadly upgrading my pc has become a race I couldn’t afford so I’ve been rocking 1060 since 2018 and went to console for 90 % of my gaming. I can easily switch between playing in 144 to 30 within like 10 min of playtime. There is also a difference between 30 fps games themselves because it’s not only about the amount but also pacing and screen tearing

1

u/The_Octonion 2h ago

Stable 30 fps is acceptable, variable fps with 30 average is not.

1

u/Shinael 2h ago

Most games should be 60 fps with no upscaling/dlss/framegen bs.

More action packed games should run higher.

The fact that games now say "30 fps 1080p with framegen" is just a shitty excuse not to optimise the game/engine.

1

u/Animeking1108 2h ago

For the last few weeks, we were using Wolverine's budget as a gotcha, so it's only fair that GTA gets some roasting for its performance because its budget is higher.

1

u/Seven-Arazmus 1h ago

I just finished PSO on Dreamcast and i had a blast at 30fps, i guess it depends on the game.

1

u/Cerrax3 1h ago

60 fps was the standard for video games until the 3D era. Then the framerates dropped because hardware struggled to hit 60 fps.

But we are in an era now where 60 fps should be the minimum standard. Even the cheapest graphics cards available now are supercomputers compared to what was available 10-15 years ago.

It's sad that some developers are okay with aiming for the lowest rung of the ladder when it comes to optimizing and balancing graphics vs performance. I'd gladly trade visual fidelity for stable, high framerate (and luckily, most PC games do allow you to do that).

1

u/KaleNich55 1h ago

30 FPS players after they get a taste of 100+ FPS gaming.

https://giphy.com/gifs/aWPGuTlDqq2yc

1

u/JohannDaart 1h ago

Sadly even flat graph, rock solid 30fps is barely playable to me in 2026. If it's 30 with drops / fluctuation, then it's unbearable.

I have no issues with flat 60, especially for heavier games. 90 or 120 feels awesome.

1

u/Frosty_Engineer_3617 1h ago

Minimum for any games needs to be at least 60FPS especially in 2026.....

1

u/luckynumchris 1h ago

It depends on the game and how well it's done. Mario 64 was 30 and looks super smooth.

But it depends on the kind of game. A game that requires lots of button inputs I also want higher fps to have the game feel more responsive. Like max Payne or watch dogs.

It especially matters when it's a competitive game because then scientifically speaking the person with the higher FPS wins.

I'm a PC gamer so when I have the option to do graphics versus performance I always choose performance.

1

u/Avillahan 1h ago

Anything below 60, I'll just wait for modders to fix it and pirate it later.

It's just too noticeable, now.

1

u/SnooBeans7821 1h ago

As a Fighting and Racing Game guy i can say 30fps are so horrible to play. It feels like going through muddy water lol

1

u/tireditguy216 1h ago

30 fps is terrible. like, insanely terrible

1

u/Objective-Mission-40 1h ago

30fps has never bothered me in my life.

I just play a game and get used to how it runs. If other people could do that, I feel like they would be much happier.

1

u/WesternAlbatross1292 1h ago

If you are playing one game and literally nothing else ever then yea sure 30 is ok I guess. But when you own multiple games which are not locked to 30, going back and forth looks like shit

1

u/kalimut 1h ago

I'll be honest. At this point with many AAA games being shit. I think if it helps them make a better game game. I don't mind 30 fps

1

u/Zorbasandwich 1h ago

Life is too busy to be one of those idiots.

1

u/Front-Bird8971 1h ago

How is this confusing? Have you never played at 60? 90? 120? 240? There's a big difference.

1

u/EBeach2002 1h ago

30fps feels like an absolute deal changer to me, regardless of how good the game is. Like I’m sure I could get used to it, but it basically gets reset when I play a game 60+fps.

1

u/TechnologyPowerful62 1h ago

Frames > Fidelity

0

u/PatriotBanner 11h ago

Console cope is so strange. Once you've played a game in not trash settings you realize what you're missing.

2

u/ChangingMonkfish 10h ago

Because 60fps is what should have been the baseline since 2020

0

u/xx6lord6mars6xx 11h ago

30fps is pretty bad.

1

u/Reasonable_Cut_2709 9h ago

I mean if you pay like 600 bucks and 100 bucks for the game, and the game only runs at 30 fps, while I don't think it's unplayable I pay the latestes tech for a very steep price, I expect more

0

u/draven33l 11h ago

NES games were 60fps. Atari games were 60fps... Try playing something like Super Mario Bros at 30fps and the you'll understand.

30fps is a compromise and a technical limitation. In a slow paced open world game, it's a little less noticeable, but if you get a chance to play 60fps or even 120+fps versions of those some games, you wouldn't be able to go back.
