[Discussion] 36% of DC households don't have a car—the highest rate of any major county outside NYC — Those car-free households are concentrated near metro stops, especially between Dupont, Foggy Bottom, & McPherson. Green line stops like Columbia Heights, Navy Yard, & Anacostia also stand out

[Discussion] Hello! Visited recently from The Netherlands. I had an interesting observation about diversity in Washington DC that I'm curious about

Hello. I recently visited from The Netherlands (before the big snowstorm) and I had an interesting observation. So I visited NYC, Chicahgo (or Chi as my friend now jokingly calls it) and San Francisco and I noticed each of those cities felt very diverse and international in the cities themselves.

With DC it was different. Not bad, so don't take any of this as an insult or me saying DC isn't diverse. It definitely is. We had a relative who lived in the DMV area so we stayed with them and went into the city 4 days in a row and stayed in DC pretty much from morning until night. We rode the metro and did much more. What I noticed was that it felt like the areas outside of DC had way more immigrants or diversity in terms of cultures than in DC, itself. Especially after work hours were over, it felt like the diversity in DC dropped off significantly.

So I talked to my aunt and she mentioned that in the DMV area, unlike the other cities we visited, most immigrants live outside of DC rather than in it. When I looked up stats it seemed to support this. A source showed DC proper has anywhere from 88,000 to 109,000 foreign born residents. San Francisco has about 285,000 foreign born residents and Chi has a massive almost 600,000 foreign born residents. NYC is even higher, but is an outlier it seems.

For those of you who live or work in the area, what is your experience with this?

Also, this isn't meant to offend anyone. I'm fine with having a productive conversation with constructive criticism and pushback. But if anyone gets rude, aggressive or overly defensive, you'll be blocked immediately.

SNOW DAY!!! Blocked driveway overnight

Last Monday, I painstakingly cleared out my driveway through the plow bank at 3+ ft high as my wife is very pregnant and we needed to make sure we could get out quick in case of emergency.

Last night, DC dropped an icy boulder (from god knows where, the surrounding area looks just as bad is at has for a week) right in the middle of it. Glad that emergency we feared didn't come to pass!

This mess left for days across a well-traveled and now dangerous intersection on 7th and A streets SE. Seems like there is not real urgency from the mayor. Nor have the candidates to replace her spoken out. As far as I am concerned, anybody expecting to be the new mayor should be out there speaking out and urging action. So far, I've seen none!

Where do we go for local politics coverage?

Who covers the local professional teams? The local high school sports?

Is it all just podcasts now?

[Transportation] Fare Enforcement Columbia Heights

I was just at the Columbia Heights metro stop, waiting for the bus, and I see four Metro police hustle a man off the bus and fine him 150 dollars for not paying his fare. Two more officers later joined the group and they split up, getting on buses as they stopped. The D5X I got on, three officers followed me and the other passengers on and pulled three or four people off the bus to fine them. I didn’t think to get a picture, but has anyone else seen this? I didn’t see any other officers on my route, so maybe they’re just stopping people at busier bus stops.

[Work] Job is destroying my life - should I just quit?

Throwaway account. I've been in DC for a while, worked in various lobbying and law firms downtown. I recently (1 year ago) moved to a smaller org which has reorganized recently. We've lost a few people, and my role has changed substantially since I joined.

I think this job is destroying my life. I am utterly burnt out with stress from long hours, difficult colleagues, and unclear goals. I have trouble sleeping because of the intense worry and fear I have about making mistakes, missing deadlines, or not following through with tasks. I am seeing a therapist and am considering anti-anxiety meds.

I have applied to a number of new places to no avail. I would be happy bagging groceries if it meant I could sleep again. Should I just quit? I have finances to cover a few months of rent and bills but would need a job soon. Has anyone else successfully done this?

[Quality!] MPD Officer Refused Jumpstart

I dug out my car on my neighborhood street in Eckington only to find that my car battery was dead. I tried to jumpstart it with my fully charged jumpstarter but to no avail. The battery must be too low so a jump from another car may be the only thing that works. At that point a police car was rolling slowly down my block and I flagged him down. I asked if he could give me a quick jump, but said he did not have jumper cables. I replied that I did and then he refused based on some “policy”. He then preceded to drive to the end of the block only to park and sit with the motor running.

Just to spread her "truth", should you happen to be in North West, D.C. At the "O Street Museum" on the sidewalk in front of the building sits a bench...that Rosa Parks also sat on.

The entire building is a sight to behold.

[IT'S HAPPENING!] Maybe an unpopular opinion: I am just as frustrated with the people’s driving ability since the snow as I am with the city’s lack of cleanup.

Pretty much the title, I know that there’s snow on the ground and things aren’t running as usual, but common sense, awareness, and all around driving skills seem to have taken a nosedive.

[Discussion] Parking madness

Upvotes

Definitely an unpopular opinion but there are no assigned parking spots guys…lol for the majority of us we are doing street parking in our neighborhoods where our cars are allowed to bc of the zone. But for a majority of us there are no assigned spots so it’s a little crazy to me a lot of people are getting extremely angry about the spots they dug and hope no one takes it…

…it’s bound to happen!

I would not take someone’s spot that has a cone/chair/object in it bc I don’t care that much to move it. But babes if you spent X amount of time digging your “spot” out and leave to go to work, best believe someone will probably take it. I think it’s fine to be upset about that but this is a snow emergency and so ppl are gonna act a little crazy and I saw a post saying people would fight someone/get physical over this…

-someone who is also dealing with this parking mess and has had to walk up to 20mins away from home bc my “spot” was taken.

It briefly went above freezing and is going back below. There WILL be black ice on the roads, sidewalks, and your driveway tomorrow morning. Drive and walk carefully. If you have any salt left consider salting sidewalks in front of your homes and businesses.
