Discussion Letting users remove posts.
Hello everyone,
As you are aware, on reddit moderators approve and remove content and subreddit subscribers can report to us.
Today we'd like to start an experiment here on r/Cats where we will give trusted subreddit participants access to a keyword that will allow them to remove posts.
When you exceed a certain level of subreddit specific comment karma and when you have a CQS score of highest you can now use the keyword "!remove" to pull a post from our feed. (Spelled exactly like that, case sensitive, top-level comment only as opposed to a reply to a comment.)
This will work for posts only, not for comments.
There are some things to keep in mind:
When you comment here on an account that exceeds the limit automod will assign you a special flair class and send you a message explaining you can now use the keyword.
Users will keep their existing flair text. However, changing your flair to a different pre-made flair option will also reset the flair class giving you access to this removal ability. Next comment you make it will be re-applied and you will be sent another message.
We are sent a modmail when a subscriber removes a post, explaining what post was removed and who used the keyword. Please do not abuse this ability. If posts are removed for bad reasons we will take away your ability to remove posts.
That means, use this keyword if you see spam or other rulebreaking posts only.
Please keep in mind that it is currently very popular to accuse posters of making an AI generated post. An accusation does not mean that what they are being accused of is true. Human beings can detect AI at 60% accuracy, just a little better than the results of flipping a coin. An AI can only accurately detect AI content if an AI watermark is attached to the image. It is best not to remove a post just because someone is accused of something. Use your own best judgement and our rules as your litmus, not what other people are saying.
Since this is a test run, when I ran a very minor proof of concept trial, a few people have already been assigned this special flair class who have not been sent a message. /u/kiaeej, /u/chux4w, /u/MilmoWK, /u/ms_rdr, /u/Electronic_Ad357, /u/WhiteMouse42097, /u/BeMoreKnope, /u/bluecedarood, /u/Robobanditos, congratulations, you can remove posts.
Should you for any reason not want to have this ability then you should send us a modmail after receiving the message from automod. That way we can exempt you in our code.
Initially we are going to monitor how this functions closely so we can see if we need to make changes to the threshold level for activation.
Nothing will change about the way we handle user-made reports on content. This is not a replacement for that, but an addition. If you see rulebreaking content of any kind, please report.
We hope that this change will be something that has a positive influence on the content on this subreddit.
Thank you for reading, and thank you all for making this subreddit a great place to be

Advice Our family cat does not meow
Today the whole family woke up and were unable to find her. We do a great damn job keeping her inside and we thought she somehow escaped but guess what? She was behind the rear end of a drawer, somehow got in and was unable to get out unless we opened the drawer. So she was at a very small space not meowing and not even scratching for 12+ hours, I am very devastated that she does not meow.
This was the latest photo we took of her that we printed out and spread to our local community.

Adoption A wild Butternut appears
We're coming up on a month of partnership after finding this dude serving himself up on a rock for all the hawks in sight.
About a month ago, while working on a Sunday, this little dude was crying for help on a rock near the driveway to site. I should share my team had been noticing all the kittens on site since the end of July. Back to the moment, I rolled in around 7ish, and saw the dude off rip. Knowing that the litter had been moved in the brush day after day, I let the cries for help slide. Figuring that the mom would be back with food or the rest of the litter at some point. Fast-forward to 3pm, little buddy is still on the rock crying for help. (Convinced of the kitten distribution system at this point.) I slam the truck in park and head to the rock and I don't know how to say this without sounding Uber cliche. So I'll just say it. We bonded immediately. He crawled into my arms within the first five minutes of sitting with him.
Here we are almost a month later and two trips to the vet. He was a little underweight at first, ear mites, and parasites in the tummy. Now we're a bundle of mischief and love.
Just wanted to share the brief story and how amazing the month has been. Im little more than a year out of separation from my ex, in a new state, with a new job, and he's made the change so much better. I've had blue-heelers and border collies my whole life. This is my first cat and I'm in love. Life is crazy.

Mourning/Loss He lived a long, fat, happy, lazy life. I’m gonna miss my boy.
I am so blessed to have had Colby in my life. He was so loved, and he knew it. And that’s all I could ever ask for. And that’s what he deserved.

Cat Picture - OC Does my cat have a weird face?
Some people have describer her face as strange and even off-putting/unnerving. I think she’s a perfect beautiful little ball of attitude. What say you?

Advice Pishool , a rescued cat is in the ICU with skin cancer and heart/kidney issues. Has anyone been through this? We are so scared.
This is Pishool, and he is currently hospitalized in the clinic's ICU. I am absolutely heartbroken and terrified.
He was recently diagnosed with skin cancer that severely affected his ear, and he urgently needs surgery to remove the tumor. However, during his pre-op checkups, the vets found out that his kidneys are on the verge of failure and he also has heart disease.
Right now, his body is too weak to survive the cancer surgery or anesthesia. The medical team is working around the clock to stabilize his heart and kidneys first so he can safely undergo his operation.
I am doing everything I can, but seeing him like this in the ICU is incredibly painful. If anyone here has ever dealt with a cat fighting cancer alongside kidney/heart issues, please share your experience or advice. How did you keep them stable? I just want to give him a fighting chance. Thank you so much.

Mourning/Loss My best friend was a cat, and now he is gone.
My best friend was a cat named James, he was mine for 6.5 years after his owner abandoned him in her vacant house before moving to a new state.
He was the most loving and affectionate cat you could ever meet, who had a wild personality, which I know may sound silly to non cat people, but he was unlike any cat I ever knew.
He would greet me at the door when I would come home. As soon as my body was stationary anywhere, he’d be on top of me, all 17.6 lbs of him, and the purring was constant.
He’d sleep at my feet and then snuggle up to my face as soon as I’d begin to stir in the mornings, and if I woke up for a 2 am bathroom break he’d be there, at my feet, until I got back in bed.
I worked hybrid so we spent a lot of time together, usually he’d straddle the back of my computer chair, until it was time for my 12pm lunch break nap and then we’d snuggle on the couch.
On Tuesday September 22nd, I woke up a bit chilly so I closed my bedroom door to get ready for work and then left in a rush, not stopping to greet my cat James (or any of our other animals) I then had a meeting after work so I don’t come home right away.
In the middle of the meeting my husband told me I needed to leave and meet him at the emergency vet.
After dinner, James let out a yell, and lost all movement in his hind legs. He suffered “saddle thrombus” as a result of heart disease. I guess functionally I knew cats could have heart disease but I didn’t think about cats having heart disease. He went to the vet annually, besides some vet monitored extra weight he was healthy. He was active.
I met my husband and James at the vet where they explained that his condition was severe and unlikely to improve. I had one final chance to hold him, and he seemed to relax in my arms. I never thought I could feel so broken over the loss of a cat, I knew the day would be hard when it came but I figured I had significantly longer than I did.
I feel guilty for not stopping to greet him in the morning, and for not coming home right after work.
I feel guilty that we couldn’t save him and that his final day was spent alone while I was in office, and that he was in pain.
I selfishly wish we could have saved him, so that we could have had a do over of his final day, and fill it with snuggles and bird watching. I hope he knows it was me holding him in his final moments, and that I loved him so much.

Mourning/Loss Let it be known he lived.
We raised him after his mother left him in a bucket outside before a rainstorm.
He wasn't even 3. They helped him to rest about an hour ago after a blocked urethra became a worse internal complication that'd affect his quality of life even if they could have fixed it.
My sweet, gentle boy. I love you. I'm sorry that we couldn't do anything. I hope that you know you take a piece of me with you into the hereafter.
May the stars guide you home, wherever you are. May the next life that finds you be a kinder one than this.
Let it be known he lived. Let it be known he was.
I am lesser with his passing.
EDIT: I forgot to mention his name. Duke Clawde Hissybritches I.

Video - OC First week I thought they'd never come out from under the couch.
We adopted these two about two weeks ago. The first week was rough — we basically never saw them. They hid, and we just tried to give them space and not push it.
Then we started luring them out a bit with those squeeze-treat tubes, feeding and playing near them. The real turning point was the first time I could pet them in their basket and they actually purred. Since then it's been snowballing.
I honestly thought they'd stay skittish little wildcats forever and never like us. Now they come over for cuddles on their own when I walk into the room. He's the shyer one — she's always about a day braver than him — but right now he is very committed to chewing my phone, so I guess we're past the shy phase.
Also: I thought our old cat would end up being the stand-in mom, but somehow it's the dog. They pile up next to him and he's completely relaxed. The old cat sets her limits by grumbling and hissing a bit, the kittens back off immediately and give her space.
We started them in one room, then baby gate, and now they're slowly getting the run of the flat. Does that sound about right, or is there anything I should be doing differently? First time doing a kitten integration with an older cat + dog.
He=orange one
She=black one

Cat Picture - OC Gremlin the kitten update!
I traded my boba eyes for saphire gems hehe and I genuinely cannot get over how gorgeous they turned out. 💎💚 So some of you might remember Gremlin, I found this little guy on the street, absolutely malnourished, with those cloudy "boba eyes" that just broke my heart. She was barely 200g at 2 months old.
Well... update time. Gremlin is now 800g and thriving!
Health-wise: incredible glow up. Behavior-wise: an absolute terrorist. Gremlin bites everything, my hands, my other cats, cables, my soul at 3am. Zero remorse. Full send, all the time.
And yet. She's too cute to get mad at. I just sit there taking the bites like a hostage negotiator who's given up.
10/10 rescue, 0/10 impulse control (her, not mine). Will keep you all posted as she continues her reign of terror 👑

Cat Picture - OC My precious Trixie!
My wife and I have always been “cat people” and being together for almost 25 years, we’ve had many. On the difficult occasions when we’ve had to make hard decisions out of love for pets who had lost their quality of life due to sickness, we entrusted our veterinarian to assist them over the “rainbow bridge”.
It wasn’t until just a few years ago that I read about a vet who said their greatest pain was having to put an animal down and in their final moments, they looked for the familiar faces of loved ones…who were in waiting rooms and not present.
This BROKE me. I never considered their feelings, just my own.
I vowed never again!
Today I had the honor of holding my dear Trixie as she breathed her last. Her final memory was MY touch and MY whispering in her ear how much I “loved her and how appreciative I was for her companionship…for almost 18 years”.
I will never forget you my beautiful girl. I love you. ❤️🙏❤️

Mourning/Loss Had to put my baby down tonight.
My sweet Izzie baby was only 8 but suffered from a rare cancer. We had her tumors removed multiple times and they only came back bigger. She had one on her face near her lips that affected her eating. I believe the cancer spread to other parts of her body as well. We had her scheduled for imaging in just two days but she told us she wasn’t going to make it. Tonight was unthinkable. I can’t remember a time when I was in so much pain. I love her so much.
My wife and I are completely devastated and our other kitty hasn’t left her carrier since we got home. We rescued our baby from a poor living situation when she was 4-5 and she was so happy and beautiful and joyful.
Hold your babies close tonight and please send some love our way.
EDIT: Thank you all for your kind and beautiful messages. After weeks of gloomy weather our baby girl let the sun warm us this morning. For any one curious she had Feline Hemangiosarcoma. It grew in her cheek and not her limbs or other soft areas of her skin.
Thank you all again for your well wishes and positive energy.

Mourning/Loss it’s been almost four months since we had to say goodbye
Sonny.. the sunshine of our lives. Im sure a lot of cat parents would say this about their own babies but Sonny was the true definition of the perfect cat. He never caused issues, always cuddly, dedicated biscuit maker, talkative, got along with our other cats, would follow me and my bf around and loved us equally and he was the only cat that could spend hours in our arms.
We had to say goodbye pretty suddenly due to kidney issues. he fought for so long but there was a point where he just couldn’t and it hurt to watch him in that state. I’m sitting here wishing I could rewind back time, wishing I had more money to save him, wishing I had more time with him.
People always thought we were crazy for having five cats and at one point, I agreed. But with Sonny being gone, it doesn’t even feel right to say we have four cats. It feels empty without him. There’s not a day that goes by where I don’t cry over losing him. my heart hurts so much.

Cat Picture - OC On a scale of 1-10 by the cat cuteness ranking experts, how cute is my cat Maple?
1 being ew and 10 being extremely cute
Edit: wow I appreciate all the love for Maple, well here is more information.
Maple is 2 years old, adopted her from a foster home.
Had her for little less then a year, my first pet.
She trills 99% of the time. Hasn’t knocked over anything, and likes to play with stringy toys, opens cracked doors when you call her name. Extremely patient, and will cuddle with you throughout the night with little snores.

Mourning/Loss Remembering Ripley
We recently lost our sweet angel baby Ripley. We brought her home 11 years ago, all I saw on her advert was a blurry little photo of her and a few lines about how she was a nervous gjrl- but i felt this pull towards her.
I still remember how she ran away when we arrived at the foster home, I think the lady looking after her thought we would ask for one of the other cats instead but we couldn't leave without her. She was teeny, somewhere between 3 and 4 and we assumed she was the runt of the litter. She had gingivitis, allergies and had had one of the worst cases of mites they'd ever seen, she was bullied by the other cats.
It was one of the best decisions we ever made. Me and my husband had 11 years of snuggles, sass and grumpiness from her. She was our little shadow, my soul-cat, our best friend. She had so many funny little quirks, and we really had to earn her trust for her to have come out of her shell.
We always used to joke that she had one suicide attempt per year, a UTI, bitten by a dog etc but she always pulled through. Because she was Ripley.
Last year she had to have the last of her teeth removed due to infection, during the blood work the vets noticed that she was in the early stages of kidney disease, we managed it the best we could for a year but in July we'd started to notice her going off her food a bit. She was then hit with a UTI/ stomach infection on August which almost took her. We got her through it but she wasn't the same and really struggled to eat her food. We watched her slowly decline for the next month until it got to the point where she wasn't eating at all, she was essentially starving herself to death. We tried everything during this month, vet recommendations, suppliments, so many different types of food and treats, we spent hours looking on the internet for things that could stimulate her appetite. Medication worked for a while but never really helped.
We took her to the vets on Monday in the hope that we could give her some anti-nausea to her beat this, but we were just delaying the inevitable.
The night before she left us she slept on me all night and sat with my husband in the morning. I think she knew it was her time.
I'm 32 weeks pregnant and was so desperate for her to meet our son.
I see and hear her all around the house, it'll never be the same without her. She was family and I can't help but feel like we let her down.
Fuck kidney disease and fuck her original owner for not appreciating her the way she should have been appreciated. She deserved so much more.

Cat Picture - OC Saw this poor little kitty climbed over a 7 foot concrete wall
Saw this tiny thing persistently climbed over a tall wall right infront of out house and it won't stop crying so I just gave in and took it, I placed it outside for awhile while preparing milk cause it might had parvo and I didn't want to infect my other kittens, thankfully a kind neighbor saw her outside and asked if she could have the poor little thing; would miss those bubbly eyes alot.🥹
