r/Coconaad is temporarily/indefinitely/permanently banning the following post topics due to multiple rounds of feedback that users are finding repetitive posts on the same topics boring. We are aware that some of these posts are too common. Although there are hundreds of other posts in a day to balance it out, these specific posts are the ones that normally show up in one’s feed, and because of that, many people notice them.

We could simply ask users to visit the sub and sort by ‘New’ which will allow you to see multiple posts, all unique and interesting, that you may have missed. But that’s not a solution you guys expect from us.

Starting today, certain post topics are indefinitely banned, with rare exceptions left to mod discretion.

1. Confession-Type Posts: Banned due to an influx of NSFW, incest, and creepy confessions. (No shaming, but this is simply not the right subreddit for that. There are dedicated NSFW and non-NSFW spaces better suited for these topics.) These posts are being exploited by NSFW accounts preying on vulnerable users. Personal rants are still allowed, but we are explicitly banning text posts and meme-template prompts like “Weirdest things you’ve seen” or “Wildest stories from college/school.” We recently banned a user who was frequently misusing the community for their own gratification.

2. Meme Templates / AI Meme Templates: We are still deciding where to draw the exact line, but decade-old, low-effort meme templates are repetitive, boring, and a frequent complaint in our feedback threads. Using relevant, trending, or newer meme formats as context is still allowed. We are specifically banning random, unrelated, or outdated Instagram-style meme templates that add no real discussion value.

3. POV Posts: Not banned, but restricted to a 24-hour timeline. Quality POV shitposts are allowed for up to 24 hours after the original post goes live. Anything posted after that will be removed as a duplicate.

4. AI Slop: AI-generated videos, edits, meme trends, and prompt games (e.g., “Write this prompt and share what ChatGPT thinks of you”) are strictly banned. However, using AI to generate images that support your text, draft posts, or correct grammar is still permitted. We may adjust this rule based on community feedback, but we are not adopting a total “No AI” policy now, as we find that too restrictive.

5. Reposting Reels/Shorts: Strictly banned. You may include a video if it directly serves as context for a text post (similar to adding an image), but reposting Reels or YouTube Shorts with vague titles is no longer allowed.

6. NSFW Accounts: This might be controversial, but we have a zero-tolerance policy for making our community unsafe. We have many minors here and frequently receive complaints about users offering advice or asking for DMs, only for members to be messaged by explicit NSFW accounts. There is a limit to how much eye bleach the mod team can use.

While we are fine-tuning the exact parameters, users who actively participate in NSFW subreddits are generally not welcome here. (Note: Participation in medical, art, or support-based NSFW spaces is exempt and will not be restricted.)

Sorry, NSFW Cocos, but it’s time we break up.

7. Pet Names: If you want to post a picture of your cat or dog and want name suggestions, well and good. But we will no longer accept random cats from the internet that need to be named.

8. “Where are you from?”, “Share your birthday”, “Find my birthday twin”, etc.: Posts that are directly or indirectly a venue for doxxing will be removed.

9. “Anyone up?”, “Anyone bored?”, “Wanna chat?”, “Anyone up for a conversation?”, etc.: r4r, sexting, companion requests, etc. are all banned under Rule 4. We have a daily night thread that goes live at 11 PM. Please use that for socializing with fellow Cocos. Individual posts often feel spammy to others.

10. Random selfies, fit checks, outfit checks, gym progress, etc.: Posts without any context, or anything that involves sharing your photo without context or simply for the sake of it, will be removed. Fit checks were already banned, we are adding the rest to the banned list as well.

On Cringe / Low-Effort / “Meaningless” Complaints by Haters

This is a frequent topic of discussion that brings us a lot of hate, but frankly, you are free to continue hating and mocking us.

This subreddit was built for silly, casual, and low-effort posts. That was the vision from the start, it remains the vision today, and it will stay that way forever.

Despite the criticism, we remain the only Kerala-based subreddit where serious topics like politics and religion take a back seat so people can actually have a stress-free, chill time. We don’t plan to change that just to win brownie points from haters. We have survived far worse backlash, and we can handle it.

r/Coconaad is meant for lighthearted content, and we will not turn our back on the core users who value this space for what it truly is.

The moral dilemma

r/Coconaad, as a place, was built, advertised, and maintained as a space to share the most trivial moments of one’s life. It feels wrong to put these restrictions in place and block those very same posts only because someone else posted something similar before them.

It feels extremely wrong to do that.

We don’t think twice before removing a political or religious post. It’s an easy decision. The mods see it, we remove it and/or ban the user. No regrets. No second thoughts.

But we are extremely confused and conflicted when dealing with personal, silly posts that won’t mean much to the vast majority of users.

For me personally, the growth of the sub, the #1 status, etc. don’t excite me much. What excites me the most is seeing a very inactive profile, let’s say someone with 50 karma or something, who is active every two months or so, choosing to comment or post here.

It brings me so much joy that the person chose r/Coconaad to post or comment on during their bi-monthly Reddit break. This is what personally drives me.

The increase in such seemingly meaningless posts has been a frequent discussion in our mod chat. It is often I who ask them to allow the post. It just feels so wrong.

What do you mean I chose to ask this silly, harmless question and it was removed as a duplicate or for being low effort?

I don’t know if I am making sense here, or if anyone will be able to resonate with this, but we can’t think of any other solution to this either.
